=READ THE GUIDE=

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For the unclear, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam.

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post images whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting images.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the site from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To fix this, save your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

== NIGHTMARE GROUPBUILD ==

Build a mecha encompassing different aspects of the horror genre. Examples include
>A mecha that incorporates general horror tropes from literature, film, and anime
>A corrupted version of an existing mecha/robot through magical, biological, or alien means (ie Symbiotes, parasites, Daemonic possession)
>Organic mecha (ie Evangelions) and monsters from /m/-related media (ie: the BETA from Muv-Luv)
>A mecha that draws inspiration from various demons or monsters from different mythologies and religions.

Submit your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com , include at least 5 finished pics and any WIP pics you took while working on your entry, as well as a brief description of your build.

START: 8/14/24

Hey everyone, I'm looking to get into airbrushing, specifically with lacquers, but I want to make sure everything is 100% safe. How much precaution should I take before investing in an airbrush setup? I have kids running around the house and definitely don't want to risk exposing them to harmful fumes. I've tried researching this, but there doesn't seem to be much reliable information on how to completely eliminate the risk of lingering fumes. I also suspect that most of the detailed documentation might be in Japanese.
>>
>>22926051
Buy an airbrush setup with proper ventilation, buy a respirator and don't work in a high traffic area of your home
>>
Is there any real difference between Mr. Color character white and the regular white? Besides the semi-gloss, that is. Would it affect mixing colors in any way?

Newfag here, this is only my second HG. Is the color supposed to look completely different from the art and the pictures in the manual? What is going here?

Damn, i feel scammed. Why didn't they just make it that color if they knew it looked better? Guess i'm learning how to paint.
>>
>>22926115
looking better is pretty subjective in this case, and the molded color is closer to the anime depiction
>>
>>22926115
At least the color is relatively close. You have kits that don't look ANYTHING like the manual/boxart because of all the minute color correction you have to do.
>>
>>22926117
also those pictures were taken under specific lighting conditions, which affects how the color looks like.

Somebody shared a chaotic wishlist. Not a good sign.

On that note, what do you guys want to see next Wednesday? I still call dibs on more Stardust Memory, particularly HGUC GP01 Revive (whatever they do, they gotta make it work, even if they split Full Burnern or not) and hopefully a GP04, even as P-Bandai. For non-Gundam, it's still Kamen Rider Geats.

Which might be a tough ask since this is probably mostly just more pics of already announced stuff like RG Shining.

new Ver Ka is likely since they also announced Narrative and Sinanju Stein at this same date last year. it's probably going to be Mk II/Super Gundam to coincide with Gundam Z's 40th anniversary.

Hopefully. Super Gundam would be awesome. Wonder if they also add an Elle figure...

The paint and respirator cartridges are an ongoing expense, so I can't really calculate that. I spent about $30 on the respirator, $100 on a cheapo spray booth, and about $20 on a shitty aliexpress portable airbrush. All CAD.

>>
>>22926051
Best guarantee is to dedicate a room to modeling and close it off to traffic while actively painting. Make sure you have a decent spray booth that can push the air out of a nearby window while spraying, and keep the booth on for a while after you finish. Always wear a respirator that is properly rated for organic volatile compounds.

If you can't properly protect your family and pets from the fumes, then honestly it's probably best not to spray lacquers in the first place. The health of your loved ones is not something to risk for the sake of a hobby.

>>22926115
Budget, mainly. HG kits only really reach "close enough" with the help of stickers. Master Grade and Real Grade do color separation better but are more expensive.
>>
>>22926237

They do field these against the BETA though, afaik they're mainly used for getting any of the smaller ones that latch onto the shield. The nips run shields in the storm vanguard loadout and it seems like every Schwarzesmarken unit has one as well, although I'm not finished the VN yet. There's also a TSFIA article with a typhoon using the same shield as East Germany does in SM so I took it from one of the Cheburashkas I just got and painted it to display with this kit alongside the sword.

Test out gloss coat on a throwaway piece and decal. Don’t use matte since that’ll flatten out the sheen

Without topcoat, the usual tools—setter when applying the decal will help adhesion, optionally softer on top after if you want to “melt” decals into plastic or adhere to curves better

American revell and AMT slop kits aren't the norm.

a simple rub with 1500 grit sanding sponge removes those imperfections.
>>
>>22926732
Lots of non-Bandai kits have loads of flaws because they haven't invested in the engineering technology. For instance, even if you buy a $300 1:350 warship model kit, you'll still have to deal with flash, panel sinks, misaligned pieces after cementing, parts that require putty filling, and so on. After doing things like sanding down imperfections, outright cutting off chunks of a part to make it fit, and so on, you're bound to end up with all sorts of chips and scratches that Surfacer 1500 couldn't hope to fill. That's where the 500 comes in.
>>
>>22926734
>even if you buy a $300 1:350 warship model kit, you'll still have to deal with flash, panel sinks, misaligned pieces after cementing, parts that require putty filling, and so on
The only boats at that scale that cost that much are newer tamiya kits and you really have to be below your average /r/gunpla user in regards to clean up skills to somehow run into fitting issues and everything else besides maybe sink marks (which is unavoidable regardless of the brand) never happens.

Here's what a 1/144 Magella looks like next to a 1/44 Zaku. Going off this, the tanks you've got there appear to be a bit undersized.
Most people who see them probably won't notice
>>
>>22927576
In fairness there's several different Magella Attack variants with a lot of size variety. IIRC some are even regular tank sized.
>>
>>22927576
Magellas are fucking huge though (look at the size of the cockpit bubble on the turret), you can't compare them to regular tanks. Even using the lowball figure from the "realistic" UC works like 08th MS Team and MS Igloo 2, it's still about 6 meters tall, which is almost twenty feet. Most regular tanks would struggle to break 10 feet.
>>
>>22926972
a 7 meter long tank would be 4.8cm long in 1:144 scale. try measuring them with a ruler to get a general sense of their scale.

Unless you paint, there's always going to be a mark. You can try one of those balancer things after sanding
>>
>>22927609
The balancer is basically high-grit sandpaper or similar to melamine scrubbers. It doesn't really remove stress marks, just surface level blemishes
>>
When spraying the plastic is there any point in going from black surfacer to gloss black to metallic or can I just skip the surfacer?
>>
>>22927609
Wait really? Then how did this guy do it?
https://youtu.be/AbJZ72WoHFw?si=PcKGmBOiseyizzGi
>>
>>22927605
Depends on your sanding tool. They generally disappear for me when going from 400-800 grit.
>>
Has anyone here ever painted a camo pattern over a metallic base coat? I'd be interested to see how it turned out because I have a build planned where I'm considering changing plans to using a metallic that substitutes pretty nicely with what I originally planned
>>
>>22927618
Nub can't disappear if it stressed and flawed the plastic. Doesn't happen all the time but occasionally. I used to literally go through 10 different grits for some nubs well beyond reasonable polishing grit.
>>
>>22927617
If you stress the plastic by mistake when you cut, no amount of polishing will remove it. I will also kneel if you're willing to polish in addition to sanding every single nubmark of a kit
>>
>>22927615
I guess you "can" skip it if you plan on never touching the model. Without surfacer your paint will scratch off really easily.
>>
>>22927634
>Surfacer
>Paint coat
>Paint coat
How does the surfacer protect the second paint coat when it's on top of the second paint coat, not the surfacer?
>>
>>22927634
I used a metallic lacquer directly on gray plastic for the inner frame on the first kit I painted, I posed it a lot and the paint never seemed to get scratched. It was an IBO FM so the frame is visible. I learned about the importance of primer later on but if you're spraying lacquers you can get away with not using it if you're lazy or trying to go fast

>>22927645
Surfacer is supposed to give paint a better surface to adhere to
>>
>>22927621
Well maybe I was hallucinating about the whole nub thing but I tried it on what stress mark that I could find on this kit and sanded it. Maybe im a retard and should go to bed already.

It's a beautiful design, and has the bonus of being UC. It got hounded to be turned into a canon animated work for the longest time, and when that got delivered it only amplified the popularity.

the old GM kits have aged a bit worse, but good thing is that the flaws in the early HGUCs are easily fixable given they're all polycap sandwiches. Same goes for Zaku III.
Zaku II F2 meanwhile is one of the best Zaku kits period and the newer Zaku kits really only reach similar level because you can't get any better.

>>22927924
>the flaws in the early HGUCs are easily fixable given they're all polycap sandwiches. Same goes for Zaku III.
What is this common mystery flaw, most of my HGUC kits are later releases
>Zaku II F2 is so good, it even stands up to current par
Really. Because I think the update for Char's is fine but do not want to pay those prices for a grunt, or for future repeats, whereas the 2003 one looks extremely super loose. Can maybe repurpose the EFGF one as Shin Matsunaga's
This is potentially some really fucking amazing news anon
>>
>>22927932
>mystery flaw
seam lines, pretty much. Just about every part is gonna have a big, fat seam over its whole length but everything simply slots into polycaps so welding them is as easy as it can get. Color accuracy is a bit of a crapshoot too and articulation tends to be mediocre, but the former is not unique to early kits and the latter not a big deal when you get down to it.
>F2
if you like F2's design, you could not ask for a better representation of it, especially for how much you get in the box for that price. For the record the High Mobility ones are very fine too, in fact the Revive is partially based on them.
>>
>>22927922
He's litteraly only """"big"""" youtuber that post here. What other default option is there?
>>
>>22927933
The seam lines do sound potentially annoying, I'd say I would find articulation crucial, but I find the Guntank and GM pleasant
>if you like F2's design, you could not ask for a better representation of it
I honestly could not tell you the difference between any of the Zaku II bodies honestly. The only thing that I noticed was the different kind of front skirt
>>
>>22927955
>The seam lines do sound potentially annoying
Personally I'd treat it as a learning experience. In theory, seam lines are easy to deal with, and by practicing on kits where they're obvious, you'll know how to fix them on kits where they're less apparent and your end result will look tighter.

That's fair, it takes a moderate degree of autism to sweat this stuff. In short F2 has much less rounded edges and thicker chest armor but broadly speaking it's pretty close. FZ is a lot more different by comparison.

And I won't want or have to take these older kits apart?
>>22927964
I mean, I can sort of tell Rick and regular Doms apart now, and it was interesting to learn that space Zakus have verniers near the ankles. Here it looks like the F2/center had its head hit, whereas the original/left has that cute dopey expression from older Zakus. A lot of these differences I chalked up to just updates having different takes. The right would be the FZ Kai I presume, another recommended budget kit. Maybe it would be good to have a mixture of all of them. Does the 2000s Zaku II suck ass in comparison? Its accessories seemed loose and its torso's a brick, but other than that it was potentially passable.

The worst thing is that it's super inconsistent. The Sigrún & Asmoday both came out in 2022 and while the stickers on the Sigrún are minimal, the stickers on the Asmoday make up the majority of the colour separation. The new HG Gundam EX has almost RG levels of part/ colour separation while only costing 490 yen more than those two IBO kits. There's no excuse for Bandai to be doing this shit but it's classic Japanese business decisions yet again.

>but also want to just learn how to install wireless LEDs so that I can pose it without being reliant on batteries or the shitty base that comes with the kit

Those that have built the PG Unicorn with the LED kit, how is it? Would I just be better served doing a wireless LED installation? The wiring kit looks intimidating as fuck.

.15mm and .2mm are pretty much the only sizes that you'll need if you're just gonna rescribe HGs and MGs. Other sizes are just for personal preference and for adding varied details to the kit.

>>

Why Kotobukiya fags are so eager to eat the slop their kits are? These fage are insufferable in their attempts to prove how wrong you are at building their shit and how it's YOUR fault, that it broke (while it sat on the shelf motionlessly, with no direct light and no paint applied).

Though, the shit they protect is so brittle, that it will crack simply by sitting on a shelf. And there was no improvement over the years.

What's the technique for painting eyes and cameras on a HG kit? Since it's not transparent plastic, what do you do to make them pop out more? I know you can just use gloss enamel and gloss top coat, and it'll stand up to basic visual inspection, but if I want to make it actually look more alive without doing shit like fluorescent paint, what are my options? Chrome followed by clear? Some sort of special stickers?
>>
>>22930300
Reverse wash it
>>
>>22930300
You could always paint the eye part black and trim the sticker that comes with the kit.
>>
>>22930306
>>22930309
He means giving the eyes more depth, an actual glowing effect, he's not talking about color separation
>>
>>22930300
Why are fluorescents off the table?
>>
>>22930324
I want the eyes to look good under regular lighting conditions, not only glow when I turn off the lights and shine a blacklight on the thing.
>>
>>22930336
You could paint a white base layer and airbrush on a very bright (even fluorescent) color to fake a glowing effect. The overspray from the airbrush will give the illusion of the eyes lighting up parts of the face.

The method in the video is a lot of tiny bits of masking tape, where you put several lengths of tape on a cutting mat and cut to various sizes, then pick and match as needed. Can eyeball what you need to mask, e.g a lot of tight spaces, so you precut more thin lines of tape instead of wide ones

There’s another option where you put a large piece of masking tape over and then cut using the edges and panel lines as a guide
>>
>>22930869
>>22930818
nta but if you do the latter method make sure you have a super sharp knife. i have an olfa art knife that i use exclusively for that purpose because my standard excel #11 blades that i get in packs of 100 aren't sharp enough and tear the tape at corners and stuff

For the most part yes. I couldn't believe how many people were taking pictures of an unpainted Aerial knocked over with no stand and an exposed portable charger because it had a Kosmos kit installed, or the Magikarp diorama on a store bought sushi tray with massive seams and orange peel that took up half the table. Anime figures category was really shit this year too, so many people shading skin with straight black with flat paint finishes, pretty certain half the entrants were all the same tranny. That contest is so poorly organized too, Ma.K gets 10+ entrants on average but still lives in General category, same for monsters/creatures which have to compete with the anime girls. Meanwhile Star Wars struggles to get more than 3 kits a year but still has its own category, only 2 people entered this year so they won by default (they were both shit). Lots of nepotism too, main announcer spends 3 minutes about how cool his best friends is and all the techniques of his winning kit then is completely silent for the rest. Dude was already announcing the next categories winner before I could even walk up to get my first place award.

Do hobby paints "expire"? Is it okay if I leave em inside a cardboard box for an indefinite amount of time or will they turn bad? I live in a high humidity area..
>>
>>22931300
i still see some hobby shops sell Humbrol paints older than your parents and they're still useable to this day.
>>
>>22931281
This is why I keep this hobby a secret. You can tell these guys never touched pussy. So fucking gross
>>
>>22931303
take solace at the fact that scale models still filters zoomers well enough.

> unpainted Aerial knocked over

it was painted, you could see the paint chips on its ass where the connector to the base slipped off in the 5 minutes after it fell over, but before the staff noticed it and propped it against the stand.
>>
>>22931302
How do you know they're old paints? Are you insinuating that there is an expiry date somewhere on the label?
>>
>>22931283
Well Unit 03 looks really good and a solid kit so I still want it. That MK II aesthetic is just getting to me.
>>
>>22931300
Would Silica gels work or are they just for short term usage? I was thinking of maybe sealing the paints in a ziplock bag and using a vacuum sealer.
>>
>>22931300
it's fine. worst that can happen if the bottles are poorly sealed is the solvent evaporating away and causing acrylics to dry out, in which case you can just add more thinner to the bottle to revive it.
>>
>>22931308
they're easy to recognize because they yellow over time. they might have dried though, but you can "revive" it by adding thinners on it

I feel like Bandai is gonna go reprint IBO kits when the MG vidar is released

I fucked up my first paint job and nearly broke the needle on my airbrush. I'm feeling completely demoralized. I got into this hobby hoping it would help me relieve stress from work and my relationship, but it seems like I'm just not good at anything creative. I spent so much time researching and watching videos, only to have my first attempt (on the RG Freedom) end in failure. I could have spent this time trying to fix my relationship or learn new skills that would have helped in my job instead.

I'm too embarassed to even post it.

Whether you like it or not, spoon practicing is a must.
>>
>>22931312
Well, then I hope you can find him soon, as well as his buddies. It'd be interesting to see them alongside the Mk IIs

1. This is why people recommend using a cheap HG kit as your first practice kit.

2. If possible, try to strip the paint and start over.

3. RG Freedom is getting regularly stocked at Hobby Lobby, so you can get a cheap replacement should you desire.

It's more about the time I lost that I'll never get back. I have a very tight schedule. Even now, I'm neglecting my managerial responsibilities to post here. And my next meeting with the firm's executive is in 10 mins. 3 hours long btw. Kill me man
>>
>>22931340
You need to practice in order to get good. As long as you continue to improve, it's not time wasted. Nobody's first paint job is perfect.
