=READ THE GUIDE=

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For the unclear, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam.

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post images whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting images.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the site from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To fix this, save your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One commonly used app that works well on Android:

== NIGHTMARE GROUPBUILD ==

Build a mecha encompassing different aspects of the horror genre. Examples include
>A mecha that incorporates general horror tropes from literature, film, and anime
>A corrupted version of an existing mecha/robot through magical, biological, or alien means (ie Symbiotes, parasites, Daemonic possession)
>Organic mecha (ie Evangelions) and monsters from /m/-related media (ie: the BETA from Muv-Luv)
>A mecha that draws inspiration from various demons or monsters from different mythologies and religions.

Submit your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com , include at least 5 finished pics and any WIP pics you took while working on your entry, as well as a brief description of your build.

Not nearly as cool as the Zaku Cannon only get it if you like the Gatling. Does decal setter go on top of under the decal? Some people are saying using it on the part means the decal still stick easier, others are saying it'll allow the decal to move more. Some people only use it on top of the decal once it's in place. What are the proper steps?
>>
>>22938191
Nice try, but I won't be building that without a hazmat suit.
>>
>>22938193
I put setter first, then decal, then wait maybe an hour or so and add setter again to seal them in because I don't topcoat. Use a cotton swab to clean excess around the decal, I don't use it on top despite what everyone says because I tend to accidentaly move the decal around and in my opinion it makes it stick less

>>22938193
Setter is basically glue. The proper way is to use it underneath the decal so it glues to the plastic, but you can also use it on top to add an extra layer of thin glue to protect the decal. Meanwhile softener, a solvent, melts decals and helps them adhere to curves better and is often done exclusively on top
>>
>>22938506
The tip is good for crisp lines and dealing with edges and corners, especially if you only use normal cotton swabs with a circular bud. For $2, it’s worth a try. You can press it against a tissue to push the ink out of the sponge for a longer lifespan

Any recommendations for a fan of the IBO/00 styles besides any Barbatos or 00 variants? (I don't mind over-engineered weeb shit desu.)

Hello, I'd like to ask some advice about the Hi Nu RG. The shoulder frame piece (04-3 on the manual, torso section) doesn't seem like it'd fit unless I use a bit of force in it (I tried aligning it so that the side with the portruding part face downward just as the manual said), can someone tell me is this is supposed to be this hard to put together? I need to ask ahead of time if I have to apply a bit more force than I need to for these RG kit since they're so delicate.

in preliminary coats, priming the whole gundam in one piece is okay, if you're just doing a quick check on the obvious imperfections. the final coats had to be done by piece though, unless you're painting a statue you can probably get away with painting it in one piece.

How important is mark setter/mark softer for decals?
>>
>>22939309
you're dealing mostly with flat surfaces when you're applying decals in gunpla, so the softener is not that important. you'd wanna use decal adhesive to make your decals stick better, especially bandai decals.
>>
>>22939320
Does mark setter also eliminate the problem where you can see the edges of the decal?
I also plan to top coat them so I wouldn't mind advice on what works best for just plastic + decals, and how long I should wait after applying the decals before I can topcoat them.
>>
>>22939330
silvering happens when you're applying decals on a matte surface. you'd wanna apply decals on a gloss surface first, then topcoat it with matte if you want to go for that finish. if you want to make it look like the marking is painted on the surface, you'd sand the edges until they disappear with a sanding sponge, then top coat it with clear of your choice.

Dunb question but how do I learn to sand straight? I've seen some people scratch build parts and sand completely even surfaces with ridiculously sharp angles but when I sand I always end up with an uneven rounded surface because either my angle is a bit off or I apply uneven pressure throughout the stroke or...
>>
>>22939414
use grey instead of brown
>>
>>22939462
Use less pressure.
>>
>>22939468
I'm barely applying any pressure at all but even just a slight difference is enough to fuck it up
>>
>>22939348
Does bare plastic count as a matte surface? I'm just a snapshitter that wants to decal and topcoat my kits. Maybe markers here and there for minor color corrections.

use a file, lay it flat on your desk, and run the piece along the file rather than running the file along the piece freehand. much easier to keep it at a straight angle. a lot of it is just practice though, you just have to be shit for a bit
>>
>>22939488
So following the reply thread, there's no risk of silvering when decals are applied to bare plastic?
>>
>>22939539
there shouldn't be. it only happens when applying on matte surfaces like flat topcoat or flat paints.

i've put decals over matte varnish multiple times and never had silvering, sounds like a skill issue or something

seriously though what are they doing wrong? is it something that happens if you don't use decal solutions? is it because they're not rolling all the air from underneath with a qtip?
>>
>>22939557
Random anon here- I think the issue is not rolling out all the water, along with not letting them fully set. I wait a day in between application and topcoat and have never had slivering either. I occasionally use mark setter, but not always. I only use softer if the decal isnt on a perfectly flat piece
>>

>>

AFAIK it's less sanding and more like polishing until the gloss coat is level with the decal. I think it's a technique that comes from car modeling?

Does anyone else kind of feel like Strike Freedom and Mighty Freedom were downgrades from the OG Freedom? OG is a really interesting take on both the nu and f91. It's like if the DX was done right. It's got that cool racecar vibes and good angles which make for cool poses. Strike Freedom and Mighty Freedom lose a lot of that unique coolness. Their whole gimmick is just being gaudy, which is a bit boring. Especially Mighty Freedom which is really plain. You wanna look at gaudy done right, look at Katoki's EW designs. He fucking cooked with that shit without having to resort to cheap gold to make stuff gaudy.
>>

Freedom is okay but it's kind of a shitty DX by itself. Strike Freedom is just worse. Mighty removes the one good thing SF had, the big silhouette of the wings.

the fucked up thing about these is that they're like 70% new molds. There's the obvious things like the legs and waist, but the entire head is newly designed to accommodate a detailed monoeye rail, while the spiked shoulder and forearms are new molds without seams.
These parts are straight upgrades from the older Origin Zaku mold, and I guarantee if we ever get another retail release in the line it won't use them.

the only gtm that even remotely looks like a coat rack is daccas and that's only if you're not familiar with japanese architecture
>>
Do you rike it
>>
>>22938306
What’s the point in these without using water slides? For some reason every big reviewer didn’t add them and their kits look like shit
>>
I'm noticing I get some "splurts" or straight up tiny holes on some runner sections I spray on with an airbrush, the paint I'm using is thinned properly, so what's the issue? it's not all the time, but I am kind of spraying all over the area. Is this one of those things that can't be helped and gets better with more experience?
>>
>>22940226
are you using acrylics? you might be getting tip dry, you pretty much have to constantly wipe the dried paint off the needle when you use acrylics
>>
>>22940228
I'm spraying lacquers, I haven't taken apart my airbrush yet, just cleaning the cup and spray out any residue with lacquer thinner from home depot
>>
>>22940229
what's your trigger technique like? you should always make sure the trigger is never pulled back without air on. press for air, pull back trigger, release trigger, unpress to turn air off. you can get sputtering if you stop/start paintflow before air
>>
>>22940237
Okay I think this is it, I'm not getting the trigger pull perfect yet, I'm pressing it and pulling it back like a tard and spraying else where to make sure paint is coming out.
>>
>>22940237
>>22940243
*update
yeah my issue is straight up resolved, pressing for air first before pulling back has made my spraying 1000% better, goddamn. I was doing it wrong the entire time

I'm interested in starting panel lining but I've seen a lot of kits where they used way too much ink and it's too thick and in my opinion it looks like shit, I just want the lines to be more noticeable, but not to the point of ruining it, any advice?

if you want the lines to be stand out less, use more muted colors rather than black.

yes, it's enamel so you can safely erase it with lighter fluid without harming any lacquer paint/topcoat/primer underneath.
>>
>>22940360

get one in grey for the bright parts

I have a 005 which is 0.2mm and it's sliiightly too thick for a hg imo, so i'd say something closer to 0.1mm for black, but go a bit thicker forany other shade
yeah they have grey and even some other colors
copic pens are also nice
below 0.1mm it's a bit too thin
>>
>>22940185
If you think they already have shit, just get them a shitload of levelling thinner because surely they paint. If they're novices, get them god hands, cheaper single bladed nippers that are more durable (dspiae), gunprimer raser origin, sanding sponge set. If they're snapshitters get them an airbrush, compressor, and some paints and thinner.

the key is to not slather the model with weathering agent, and work on each part slowly, while knowing the context of kind of weathering you want to apply to it. junkyard scraps would have tons of rust and even rotting metal, while suits in active service might just see minimal paint scratches, oil/soot streaks, dried water and some yellowing on panels.

>>
>>22940549
Have you tried making friends with people and not being a dick?
>>
>>22940343
Cut with nipper and leave a little bit of nub, use 400 grit to destroy the nub. Usually 4 strokes is enough to remove the nub and I just use higher grits to smoothen the surface.
>>

>>
>>22940582
Snipping it twice, once far away (even max edge on the thin part) and again near helps reduce the stress on the plastic. If you’re experienced white marks on nubs that won’t go away despite sanding, that’s because the cutting stressed the plastic

Where the fuck is my HG Kehaar II reprint? My HG Hazel Owsla? When are you ever going to sell the HG AoZ accessories in the US, Bandai?
>>
>>22941268
Xe isn't wrong. We already lived through Peak Gunpla which was 2018-2019 looking back. Good balance between regular/PB and everything was cheap and easily available. You can however say that was the beginning of the end when the Barbatos took 3 years to get a MG when that shit was out while the shows were still airing in the past.

The only thing we have now that we didn't back then was a sizeable amount of bootlegs. And even then the Chinese can only weasel their way into the market because Bandai keeps fucking up these days.

because FAZZ uses ZZ Enhanced parts and Bandai dies a little inside when they print p-bandai stuff as retail.

Will the deadline basically be Nov 21st at 11:59 pm? I'm trying to get as much time as possible even on the very last day, and the final day just so happens to be my day off from work. I swear to the lord almighty, the universe keeps coincidentally fucking me over, making me unable to spend time on my build, even with a generous extension, this has happened like 3 times in the past and I really am fighting reality, or maybe even actual demons that are fucking with me. I wish I could paint late night but I live in a household of assholes and my compressor is loud as fuck when the tank gets emptied and it refills.

Come on, Kotobukiya. Give us Malos's Siren too. We can't just paint ours jet-black if that would make the effect parts feel off as an expense.

On a completely different note, anyone recap on how many times the Shining Finger Sword was ever used during the entire first half of G Gundam? Because I only saw a handful of episodes to only remember the Shining Gundam turning gold once when using it, so that we can get that effect part on the P-Bandai RG Shining Gundam True Super Mode, which has to happen. We only got that effect, like, once ever in the HGFC kit.

aoz in a nutshell
>>
Which MG will we get first? One from SEED Freedom, Witch from Mercury, G-Reco, Hathaway, or Requiem for Vengeance?
>>
>>22942080
SEED Freedom. The Full Mechanics line is enough for G-Witch, and RE:100 might still be on the table for the Xi and Penelope because they are too big to be MGs. RFV and G-Reco won't get MGs, with the latter being given the G-Saviour treatment of never getting MGs at all.

Damn, it’s so crazy that we aren’t guaranteed mgs for new shows anymore. Like it used to be a given that the main gundams at least would get them.
>>
>>22942098
To be real honest, Mighty Strike Freedom could be guaranteed if they do the Star Build Strike approach (release the Strike Freedom Type-2 first, complete with parts to convert it back to the base Strike Freedom as its 2.0, followed by the Proud Defender, and hopefully selling lots of this will be a drive to make a Wings of the Skies effect parts set for the MG and MGEX). Calibarn is most likely Full Mechanics with similar gimmicks to the Aerial, starting with a set of red plates for Permet Score 5 and then adding an extremely hard to make rainbow electroplate for the Permet Score Over 8. Finally, in regards to RFV, it's just a pet project that would not make a Master Grade, but G-Reco is pretty much dead to Bandai anyway.

but both of these lines are 1/100?

I'm using displae markers to color correct a snap build but the marker eraser ran out midway through the job. Is it true that rubbing alcohol can be used to do the same job?

It will likely be the thread that lasts through that day, if past groupbuilds are any indication.

those drills and scribers are literally useless. neither are sharpened and the sizes aren't what they state (especially the thinner ones). cancel them if you can and get madworks or dspiae chisels and get some drillbits like these https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004411348630.html
>>
>>22942083
based.
i got a dspiae vise & hand drill and a border model scriber, and that same wet palette
>>22942426
>drills
it's a universal chuck though, if he needs better/sharper/smaller bits he can just buy them from his local hardware store
probably true for the scriber though
>>
>>22942260
Does it matter? It keeps duel from ruining the threads.
>>
Does the rise of third party kits mean that there is demand for more kits that Bandai is failing to capitalize on? Or are there other factors that would make more Bandai model kits not as profitable such as production capacity or economies of scale?
>>
>>22942426
They already shipped. ;_;

Should I have at least gotten the Moshi branded stuff instead of unbranded?
>>
>>22942643
I saw a review for the wet pallette on YouTube and it's apparently quite good.

>>22942426
Found bits cheaper in pick3. What size would I need for HG kits to drill rifle barrels and stuff?
