Thoughts on Tokyo 2040?
I'd rather watch the original run, but I definitely appreciate the changes and additions.
>More scenes of the characters opening up to each other
>Linna has a distinct personality instead of just dressing up like a gay car salesman
>Characters like Mason, Mackie and the Genom CEO are also better developed
>Making Priss and Leon's relationship more mostly results in corny monologues from the latter, but I like the part where he goes "I don't care if the robots ruin everything, I just want to see you come back safe and sound"
I also appreciate how it shifts from the original's swathe of revenge plots and Military-Industial Complex dealings, to a robot uprising of truly biblical proportions.

My only real complaint is that the most of the prior episodes (the first two thirds of the show) are just a moody, lethargic retread of the original series; with cheaper animation and significantly weaker battle choreography.
>Worse timing
>Less acrobatics
>More one-sided curbstomps
>Struggles to use the buck-wild enemy designs to their fullest

Any other noteworthy TV adaptations of OVAs?
Tenchi Universe definitely outshines the source material as far as space opera are concerned, even if Mihoshi bumbling her way to success is funnier than turning her into a clumsy moron.

It was one of the earliest anime I got into as anime so I do have a special fondness for it. The OVA certainly has a more bombastic style and soundtrack and animation but that's not surprising. TV has kind of a weird slow burn to it that I rather like. It definitively knew what it could and couldn't do and leaned into that even if the plot got kind of dumb near the end. I did recently rewatch it and while I'd say it's somewhat weak at the ending on the whole I still really liked it.

>the plot got kind of dumb near the end
>somewhat weak at the ending
All the morphing and assimilation got pretty absurd, but it still works as a parable about man's relationship with technology.
Bending liquid metal into a giant sword is a more satisfying ending than any Achilles' Heel.
It also has the zero-G fight with the fake Knight Sabers, one of the few fights that wasn't a letdown.

I generally agree with you there. My main gripe though is how Nene wasn't a redhead anymore.
>>
Been too long since I watched it to remember much, but I do recall that, once you get used to it being its own thing and not just a direct remake of the original, it was pretty alright.

Last one. MILF Priss is canon.

I liked it better when it was Bubblegum Crisis instead of some weird techno zombie apocalypse.

I think 2040 is better written than the OVA because it has more time and was planned out but I think the OVA looks better but is pretty weak writing wise, the perfect BGC would be mix of the two also I love dub Nene voice in 2040 and I saw 2040 before the OVA as a teenager so bit biased but also don't love the OVA as much as old fans too.

There aren't many of those but also Tenchi was light novel first so it doesn't really count.

>What about Crash?
Story is less interesting (bland mercenaries stealing advanced AI parts, Boomers getting hacked by charging stations and merging into underwhelming giants), but the Knight Sabers still have their moments.
I liked the part where Priss lashes out at her new producer for trying to rope her into a girly idol act, and the episode were she has to escort a Boomer through the slums.

People would probably be fonder of this entry if it incorporated the unmade hot springs episode of the original (never found a script or detailed description, but it probably involved aquatic boomers).
>>23021898
I'll concede that she looks better without the pink inner shirt.
>>
>>23022303
Yeah I heard it was meh but it's got a Blu Ray so I can watch it in good quality now also I like how in every series of BGC but the original the boomers look different, one thing I didn't like in OVA they all look the same.
>>
>>23022303
The one thing we do know involving that hot springs episode was that it’s plot was recycled into the fourth tenchi ova episode
>>
>>23022303

Crash was mostly just really uninspired.

The BGC OVA series was intended to have 13 episodes, but Crisis and Crash only have 11 episodes put together. The final episode of Crash shows definite signs of being three episodes combined into one: the Boomer revolution and the battle Boomers attacking ADP headquarters, the fusion Boomer assimiliating the Central Databank Building, and the final battle to stop Largo from drilling into the nuclear reactor. If the final story arc had been separated into three episodes, we could have gotten something similar to the Boomer revolution from 2040 which would have played out through all three episodes, and the Central Databank Building was obviously supposed to have been Genom Tower originally. Having a big skull face emerge from Genom Tower would have made for a better image than Galatea flying into space wearing it like a skirt in 2040.

2040 was pretty cool once you got past NOT MUH sorta like Dirty Pair Flash
I was fairly mixed on it at first, obviously it was NOT MUH but the op was good and was in my usual rotation basically since the show started. Caught the first ten or so when it was new, then got the dirt cheap dvd set and never bothered to finish it

finally went through it with the gang a year or two back, was a very solid tv show
I def liked how shit blew up at the end, was a nice rampup compared to a lot of shows going "oops, two episodes left, uhh... shit massively hits the fan so now we have two eps for it!"

but yeah OG BGC def had the better production values and music and sonoken but it also just runs out and sorta stops
>>
2040 had a somewhat better plot that felt like it had actual themes and planning going into it VS. the original's "hey guess which Western movie we watched a week before we had to produce this", but the original OVA just had way better production values and the additional writing quality in 2040 really only sent it into "acceptable" territory that I rather just prefer the original because you don't get top quality animation like that any more.
>>
>>23024145
The OVA market could often be very seat of the pants. The production of new episodes would really depend on how successful the old were so it wasn't uncommon for some to just stop in the middle. Get shortened. Or the production to just end. Not that TV series don't have somewhat similar issues but once you negotiate for X amount of episodes you can typically work within that frame.
>>
>>23022996
>The BGC OVA series was intended to have 13 episodes
There's no proof of this.

Do you think 2040's music had a more timeless quality than the OVA's? The main problem was, Priss didn't seem to have enough songs, so she kept singing the same songs over and over again.

>Do you think 2040's music had a more timeless quality than the OVA's?
No. Not by any stretch. And I say this as someone who loves 2040. It's not bad, not remotely. In fact it's quite good. But it's all very much anime music. If you get me. The OVA just rode the soundtrack harder and really committed to music being part of the series identity.
>Priss didn't seem to have enough songs, so she kept singing the same songs over and over again.
On one of the ADV commentaries I actually remember them complaining they didn't really ever record a full song. There was enough music to put out some albums but really it was mostly what you'd expect for shows.
>>
Why are there next to no lewds for the 2040 versions?

Not much is actually known about 2032 Sylia's origins. Though she and Largo communicate telepathically at one point, she's probably not a Boomer. More likely, she underwent the same fate as 2040 Sylia at the hands of her father: being a guinea pig and having Boomer tech grafted into her brain as part of his research.

What do you do if you can't legally get human test subjects for your crackpottery? You tell your daughter she's going to be a big girl and help out daddy with his research, of course. (Dr. Stingray was a despicable human being.)

>>23027631
It's not exactly like the original is swimming in art these days either. It's honestly astounding. The only major 80s franchise that seems to keep getting any love at all is Dirty Pair.
>>
>>23021631
Much better than the original IMO, because at least it has a plot worth following. The characters are also better-written.

Is there anything in 2040's music that gives it away as having been made in 1998? Could you imagine this kind of music being made 15 years from now? Mind you, 1998 was a good year for experimentalism in anime music, because it gave us "Message #9" from Gasaraki and Cowboy Bebop's jazz soundtrack.
>>
>>23033688
It's got that kind of late 90s 2000s grind edge to it. But my point was less about it being dated and more about it being largely background music made to accentuate the shows rather than the OVA which had an entire discogrophy of city pop and glam rock vocals. 2040s soundtrack is effective and memorable but it's very largely about punctuation.
