Valhawk is very similar in that regard though. The combo with Valstork takes 20 stages to unlock and is made redundant by Valguard a few stages later, and then you don't get Valzacard until near the end

W is a game from before enemy power scaling got out of hand, so that many pilots is unnecessary when you can just upgrade Mazinkaiser's armor and make it basically unable to take more than 10 damage per hit. And pilots do not help with increasing damage output beyond Valor/Soul, which practically every unit gets anyway. Sure it's powerful, and it's probably enough to solo W, but it's nowhere close to being the strongest unit in the game like I've seen it made out to be. Not without the infinite SP glitch, anyway.

Rushbird has excellent PU bonuses and hits reasonably hard with just Light Blazer when you're lugging around with that. Dimension Storm is strong enough for basically the rest of the game and you still get Mode Archeonis after that at the very end.
Besides, it follows the standard upgrade schedule in L anyway. If you want to complain about someone with bad pacing, then Nova is the one who has to rely on Dankuuken until Stage 29B and you get Max God on the next stage.
Also, for what its worth, complaining about L's budget when they touched up a lot of animations, benched most of the shared series between the previous ones and cleaned up some under the hood things is a kind of silly.

Its less enemy weapon scaling and more W is one of the last games with % based upgrades. The OG enemies can kill units if you get complacent or have bad rng due to all of the ailments they have running around. Inference even comes with Double Action, Infight/Gunfight 9 and Armor Down.

Enemies can't overpower upgraded armor. And since Kaiser can output more damage than Valzacard, it's a better unit. Same with others such as Orgun and Genesic GGG (granted Orgun isn't anything special before Grand Cross, it's the unit that got fucked by upgrade schedule the hardest). IIRC Valzacard is on the same power level as Golion and King J-der

Anyway, the point of all of this is that Valzacard is a lackluster upgrade that feels like it comes too late for how underwhelming it is, Valguard is really struggling to keep up with the absolute bullshit units like Tekkaman Hiver you have at that point, and while Valzacard helps, it feels like the kind of power Valguard itself should have had in the first place

Blade is nice but I feel it gets blasterization too late in W

Oddly Mazinkaiser (and Getter) jobbed a lot in my run, GGG units are nice in all ways possible, nice number of units, nice power, nice utility.

Valzacard (and Valguard) ARE powerful but ofc Genesic/J-ark are way better

Also Astray units are crazy good (in the final map not even the final boss could hit Powered Red/Blue Frame with more than 20% hit)

Hiver's MAP is the exact same as Great Zeorymer's except you can also target the area it hits, it can't hit allied units and it only requires 130 will instead of 140, meaning you can use it on turn 1 since you can just use Hiver's sub to cast Spirit twice and then have Hiver herself use Love
It is easily the most broken MAP attack in the entire franchise and I just wish it was in Z1 instead of W

But again, Hiver's also good because the only thing that outdamages her combo with Blade is Final Dynamic Special, it's not just the MAP. Even the other Blade II Tekkamen are bizarrely strong, with just Sommer and Vesner on their own being able to outdamage any other real in the game in addition to having two pilots to help deal with dodge decay

Multipilot units are consistently good in the series and shine even harder in NURs by virtue of those additional spirit sets due to the sheer amount of utility you can get from that kit in addition the standard combat stuff. Kaiser having higher armor is nice but Valguard also has Focus/Alert/Persist/Guard on that set spread out between several pilots while also carrying a much larger HP pool. Accel/Zeal are good spirits for aggresive play.

Size Modifiers in W actually do work, (its Ignore Size that's broken) and Valguard/Valzacard are 2L, so they consistently deal higher damage than their base power suggests. Kazuma can also slot in Soul on NG+ which is part of the reason why it only caps out at 5500 since it has Zeal on a seperate pilot. Mazinkaiser might deal more damage on a single hit but the Val series does more overall in a single turn. Especially when Kazuma also has innate support attack level 2 and mettle. IIRC the split/combine trick works with Valguard so you are wasting damage on PP by leaving them perma combined. Mazinkaiser doesnt even have a MAPW and is forced to plink things down one at a time which is just slower than Valguard/Valzacard/Hiver/Freedom/METEOR etc who can effortlessly clean through hordes of trash.
Hiver's biggest problem is Yumi's horrible will gains and the amount of EN she burns through. The latter isnt a problem when you play with upgrades but on NUR, it can get in the way.

The spirit command glitch in W also applies to Valor/Soul so if you happen to get a unit that can do both, they do stack allowing for a comical 5x damage modifier. That's how you can hit W's damage cap of 65535.

If you have to put in arbitrary conditionals to make the unit look good, reconsider what you're doing. Valzacard wasn't designed or balanced for either of those. Not even your point about Soul applies since if we're being honest the ability of Kazuma to bring his power up to the level of everyone else for one hit per stage changes very little.

I mean, am I? Proton Cannon Focus is the weakest combo in the game, literally even the TV Aestivalises outdamage it. SRW is one of those series where armor values seem to have more of an exponential effect at lower damage values (to say nothing of barriers, Prevail, etc), so Valguard's higher base damage on its finishers (plus the size modifiers in Valhawk's case) seems like it can clear certain thresholds that you can't clear while uncombined.

Step out of your NUR mindset for a moment. The game plan for units like Mazinkaiser is always just counterkill everything on EP, which is usually faster than trying to line up the perfect condition for MAP nuking. You use MAPs to earn money, not to save time.

Well, if we're getting into optimization hell like you're suggesting Kaiser is a bad choice of investment compared to the likes of GGG, Tekkaman Blade and Valzacard are all units have multiple sequences of where they're the only unit available that can have turns saved via triggering the advance stage cutscenes faster when upgraded. I'd argue it's the reverse Kaiser is only better than Valzacard in areas that DON'T matter for optimization. The Val group's shared upgrades perfect availability and importance in many stage events makes it a more important and in turn relevant unit when it comes to an optimization run of W. Mazinkaiser is for the most part just a big damage sticks a single big damage still with low movement, who's stage events are largely irrelevant or happen before you can even upgrade him, the only exception is stage 19 which has a relatively low impact from favoritism.

Every single SRW LTC/Speedrun devolves into Zeal + MAP spam because its faster than counterkilling on EP. Why click through so much fodder when say Kira/Athrun/Yumi can blitz through all of them in one go? As early as the beginning of the game, Bless demonstrates this with Mettle + MAPW against all of the crappy S/M sized enemies that get one shot.
With upgrades and BP usage why are you even worried about taking damage when the accuracy formula is so weighted in favor of evasion that you can effortlessly push enemy hit rates to neglible levels? W still uses the same accuracy formula as J and you're bound to have enough confuse charges for the entire map.
Proton Cannon Focus being weaker than Kaiser doesnt change the fact that its still an additional Valor backed attack or the other relevant support stuff you can output before recombining. Valguard doubling as a combat capable carrier is a really relevant thing to note for optimization purposes since units without accel/zeal or need their sp for other things apreciate it for movement boosting and you're likely going to have to use it for combat as well during those turns.

Megabooster + Accel on a ship allows you to effortlessly cross half a map in one turn and get your units in the action by turn 2. Waiting on the AI means that the first combat you're seeing on some maps is Turn 3-4. W's enemies also love to spawn in front of the player, so you don't have much backtracking to do. For example, the Mazinkaiser final stage in Part 1 where its literally move up and fight the next wave.

Doing A portable with the patch rn. During stage 14 where you get kyara in the ReGZ, by the last turn of the stage i used the "split" command and then the reGZ turned into master gundam. Thought it was a temporary bug but even after that it seems it will stay like that. Also can't put anyone else into it other than kayra

Yes. In OG1 you'll miss out on the Shishioh Blade, Graviton Launcher, Hero's Mark and Soul of Steel. The Hero's Mark and Soul of Steel are just nice-to-haves, the Shishioh Blade and Graviton Launcher determine what units stay useful in endgame.

Yeah most SRWs are set so that pilots have generic quotes if they're put in units they can't typically pilot to prevent it from locking like that. And in some cases where they don't have dialogue they'll just be silent
