I really didn't pay much attention to the gacha so maybe this is off-base, but the character designs I did see were pretty bad and I think it's interesting why. Using SOP2 on the left for reference, heavily clothed characters are really hard to make appealing, rainjackets in particular require an artistic sense where no common ideas will help. Knowing how the material works and bending the rules anyways, the way you arrange the wrinkles and folds and stiff parts and sheen is on the level of abstract art. I don't know what you'd call this style but it seems to have been a fad for a bit, and I feel like executives forced the style on muvluv because it was an easy marketing reference point and they thought it would print money, without understanding the style is actually a really bad idea and only got popular due to either sheer artistic skill or because it stood out, neither of which they had going for them. Look at SOP2 in any fanart or even other mediums like the anime and she looks completely different, something significant being lost.On the right the coat is barely realistic in its details. The bodysuits muvluv is known for are easy to draw and ensure artistic consistency so it doesn't look cheap, while there's no end of variations a skilled artist could add.
