Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

-=MELEE GROUPBUILD=-
Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, rocket launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale, any brand, and any type of kit is fair game here. That means anything from Gundams to girlpla to miniatures are all free to use.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Got a little more done on this jim, my first painted kit. I need to finish up the head and the accent panel on the shield, and I was thinking of brushing some gray bracing on the back of the shield too, and then I can clear/panel line it. I'm not sure if I feel like buying decals for this specifically so it might just get some extras for something else down the road. It's not perfect, but I think I learned a lot.

Extremely dumb questions but I live in a small apartment and I want to paint. I have some ideas for a small booth setup by a window but priming seems like it'd be easier/better just coming out of a rattle can. Will a cheap booth be able to deal with lacquer primer? Could I get away with spraying the primer in my bathroom with fans and a box setup? Would lacquer fumes be an issue for the central exhaust fan in the bathroom i.e. going into other apartments and getting me evicted?
>>
>>23069424
I did all my spraying in the balcony. It was only with cans though. I still made a box so wind didn't fuck up everything.
>>
>>23069427
No balcony unfortunately, and I'm in a pretty metro area so going outside to prime isn't really in the cards.

>Is there any special method to getting them to look nice and flat and smooth after sanding?
Melamine sponge or fingernail buffer

>And how do I tighten up joints?
Topcoat or glue. Something to give the joints more thickness.

Spraying seems to be out of the question for your case because of fumes. You could do painting with a brush/sponge. I've only ever painted small surfaces with a brush not full panels.

I have access to an industrial paint booth at work, but that's not really an option for most people.

Shouldn't your bathroom's exhaust fans blow the air outside where it won't circulate back into a different apartment? Pretty sure those vents should be one-way, otherwise taking a shit would somehow stink up your neighbors.

If space is an issue, you can try to make your setup portable. So long as you have a window that you can crack open and stick a hose outside, you should be fine. Airbrushing doesn't take up a lot of space except for spreading out the parts while drying and keeping dust from settling on them as they dry. You just need a chair, and a table that can hold your spray booth, compressor and cleaning pot. If a window isn't available, there are bucket setups you can use (do your research on that). You don't want to cheap out on the spray booth though, extricating the fumes out of the place that you live, play, eat and sleep in is very very important.

For priming, it is cheaper in the long run to airbrush it. For instance, Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 can be mixed with Leveling Thinner in the exact same way as paints.

Anon, this is out of box body, no panel lining yet. If you want to add shadows to skin parts, it is recommended to either use acrylic flesh-colored washes (same as miniature painters use, like GW's "fleshsade"), dilluted brown panel liner or straight up colored pencil, gently wiped with cotton tip (reccomended applying matte layer first like varnish).

This laddie (KMR Cloud Ghost Hi Nu) appeared on aliexpress but I'm seeing it go for like three times the price it was supposed to be (148 CNY). Obviously I didn't expect it to cost just that but with other bootlegs it seems to only be like 40% increase at most, typically more like 20% I think.
What gives? Is it just the first sellers going for scalping or should I throw in the towel and buy from taobao or something? I saw it there and it was much closer to the original price. Even with shipping and whatever else agents ask for, it's gonna be cheaper than that.

they're currently the "pinnacle" of Bandai's engineering, but they have issues, like C-clips on knees that wears out fast, limited articulation on Aerial's legs (ankles cant rotate longitudinally for some reason) and Grassley suits's pathetic elbow joints.
>>
>>23069620
they really waited for the price hike before releasing it eh?
>>
>>23069865
For some reason, Bandai uses really soft PS for the joints. C Clip or not, they wear out really fast. Gwitch HGs are slightly better than IBO era, but they end up as the same level of dogshitness after a month.

PS wearing out super fast is just how it is. It's not nearly as durable as the older ABS bandai used to use. C clips will always be a retarded choice for major joints no matter though.
>>
>>23069898
Because most of those "reviewers" judge a kit when they are OOB and the degradation has kicked in yet. Arguably, it happens to every plamo, but Gwitch and IBO kits have a really short lifespan. An actual good kit can last for 1 or 2 years until finally shitting the bed, Gwitch kits last about 1 month.

Gwitch is just exceptionally terrible on that part. Bandai's bigger HG kits seem to be better most of the time. My Dygenguar kit is still very solid and it's been several months since the assembly. it's not impossible to sharpen blades by hand, people have been doing that for centuries. The difficult part and why expensive nippers are expensive is aligning the two cutting edges so they line up perfectly, it's done using grinders that are precise up to +/- 5 microns.

Maybe it's feasible on single-sided nippers.

tl;dr you probably can, depending on the carbon content of the steel, but it's not worth it and they won't perform well for long.
I'm a steel and knife autist. You can get them to some level of sharp but god hands are made of a harder, more unyielding higher carbon steel so the edge does not bend and they hold and edge very well. To that end. That's why when they fail they tend to shatter or break instead of bend. It's also why they need a pin in them to keep you from closing them too hard. Most nippers are made of much softer, easier to shape steel and that's why they dull. When you create a very fine edge with steel like that it tends to bend and roll. You'd need to near constantly maintain them to keep that hypothetical edge. Generally, softer steel is a lot more forgiving to imperfect usage too.
I also do personally sharpen a set of double cuts for my first cuts so I have a lot of experience with this. They need touched up every few kits and it takes about 15 minutes to do. They can't get as sharp as my god hands either but they still get pretty sharp.

>>23070035
It's also requires more specialized tooling and it's a lot more time consuming to machine harder steel without ruining the heat treatment.

it's literally just a rebranded calligraphy dip pen that they've marked up (as hobby brands often do). you can get the same thing for a dollar.
it won't scratch paint, you just tap it in the recess and let capillary action do its thing. same as you would with your brush.
i tried one years ago, you still get overspill that needs to be wiped off (though less of it) and sometimes all the fluid would spill out at once (that one might be a personal skill issue, but it would be disastrous on bare plastic)

i'm doing my daccas in sms hyperspace and you can't stop me. i impulse bought it 2 years ago and if i don't use it now i probably never will. i haven't tested it yet but the flakes only look marginally larger than alclad and nowhere near as big as say tamiya or turbodork.
>rough finish
are you used to levelling thinner? sms doesn't have any retarder in it, it dries even faster than the primer i thinned with hardware store thinner. you have to drop the psi to like 12 (the instructions on the bottle say 12-15) and get in closer to the model to compensate for the drying speed or you end up with that rough finish. i usually just squirt a bit of mr levelling thinner into their normal colours to make it easier to work with but i'm not sure if that would negatively affect the finish of pearls/metallics or not

chinky booths only have ~180cfm fans, nowhere near enough for rattlecans. they're fine for airbrushing at <20psi with a 0.4/0.3 nozzle but they can't cope with high psi or large nozzles (rattlecans have both).
just get a fold-away booth and table if you have nowhere you can leave one permanently, a folded up booth is about toolbox-sized and a table folds up flat so you could stash it in the gap between some furniture and a wall or something.
if you want to use rattlecans go outside.
>>23069779
i've been liking sunin7 ex04 matte. 60ml bottle and thins out even more than mr gx clears (i eyeball my thinner but the bottle says 1:3-1:4, i think i do closer to 1:4). sunin's colours and ex03 gloss clear tend to pool in my experience (possibly just a skill issue but i've never had pooling issues with other lacquers) so i don't recommend them in general but their surfacers and the ex04 matte clear go on great.
i used the sunin ex04 on the beige parts of pic related.
purple and red bits have a different finish, for those i used the last of my sms matte clear which kinda sucks and needs a few coats to not look satin.

I mixed in some leveling thinner (premixed sms thinner with 10% mr retarder), tried low psi (12-15), and high psi (~20, then to 25), and I still got the same result. I also forgot to mention it would clog as well. your milage may vary, I would just try it out anyway.

"just build them like gunplas" doesn't tell us anything anon. that could mean anything from lazily snapshitting to scribing and modifications and all that stuff.
most girpla have a lot of seams that need welding, are mostly abs so you have to be more careful painting, and koto tolerances can be really tight in places so you'll want to lightly test fit joint and peg parts before snapping them all the way. a lot of the joints in girlplas are thinner than the ones in gunpla and are more prone to breaking so you'll want to sand any that are too tight, and if you intend on disassembling it to paint you'll want to make sure the snapfit connections aren't so tight that you can't get them apart (snipping the wall of the female connection point is usually enough, or you could do the 45 degree peg cut, or just sand)

if you don't paint you might want to look into making sprue goo for welding the seams, there's big seams down most of the limbs. i never had much luck with sprue goo personally and always still ended up with visible discoloration just the same as when i weld normally, but some of the people over at >>>/toy/busou manage to make the seams almost invisible on unpainted kits with it

Hi all, question for anyone with an RG Epyon.

I recently decided to get one. For some reason, I think a Gundam looks incomplete without a firearm in hand, so I figured I'd give it one of my spares.

Does its hand scale about the same as an HG or is it larger?
Could it hold a standard, triggerless HG rifle or would a Kotobukiya rifle fit better?

I'm not opposed to some potential modding, but just curious for now.
Anyone who knows, thanks in advance
>>

The epyon was explicitly designed for chivalrous melee combat.

bootlegouf main body assembly done
(manufacturer is STAR, sold as "White Tiger")

the only real issues so far:
>head is loose (joint tighten later)
>right forearm outer armor is loose, had to glue it in place
>right wrist is loose (joint tighten later)
>the pipe clamps were very fucking tight and required some sanding to fit
>the shoulder armor spikes wouldn't seat completely so i shortened the pegs a bit and glued them in place
>polycaps have some flashing here and there
>front shins pop off kinda easily but I think this might be an issue with the real kit itself

it comes with sheets of waterslides for detailing and two runners of a "flight pack" in grey and black that you're supposed to mix for color separation
>>
>>23070714
Mine flight gouf from them had some flawed molding on a few parts (jagged edges on the round part of the forearm armor, stuff like that), but on the other hand no pegs needed sanding and everything stays together pretty great.
Honestly the only real problem with bootlegs at this point is lack of quality control.

>>
>>23070877
They've been popping up at hobby lobbies for the last few months. You could grab on there during the 40% off sale, possibly. They also pop up on ebay auctions pretty often so you might get a cheaper one that way.
>>
>>23070863
how old is it (when did you buy the kit)
>>
>>23070877
It's a good kit but I don't think I'd pay 120 bucks for it. Also the beam effect parts are ass. Slapping together second hand parts from the sinanju is a poor substitute for a proper beam sword. Should have recycled the older MG's effect part if they couldn't be assed to make a new one.
>>
>>23070886
>>23070863
i ask this because i've heard similar complaints about their GM Spartan and even their Schwarzette, but I've noticed that tthose complaints were always when the bootleg is new

am i allowed to buy bootlegs if i'm white? i'm kind of curious to see how daban kits are and if the quality difference is actually significant or if it's more along the lines of bandaibabies having the same reaction as they do to kotobukiya and others.

OId daban is real shit, new daban is alright. You're better off buying new bootlegs like the XFS Spartan because they have their shit together
