-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-=MELEE GROUPBUILD=-
Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, rocket launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale, any brand, and any type of kit is fair game here. That means anything from Gundams to girlpla to miniatures are all free to use.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Yeah that makes sense. It just feels like a waste to not have the freedom in some floating pose though.
>>
>>23064491
Normal, obviously. MGEX so far has been a glorified 2.0 for kits that are at least a decade old and are popular enough to sell well at a >¥10,000 price point.

This is how I'm gonna display it. At least until the GN Cannon comes in through the mail in about two weeks. So the issues
>old style trigger finger spilt hands
This is the big one. Those hands can't hold the GN Launcher, the Bazooka and Anti Ship Sword. Everything else doesn't need to be held by the hands. Kit has infinite possibilites for poses, but you need to get some third party hands to get the most out of it.
>head connection is a little loose
Not a big issue, use any of the peg thickening methods you like.
>mask falls of easily
Glue it.
>action base connection is loose
This is the odd one. None of the other reviews I've seen online ever mentioned this. I might've done something wrong, but it's just a polycap sandwiched between the hip parts so it's unlikely I've screwed up. Might just be the victim of third party QC. Can also just thicken peg and call it a day.

Everything else has been pretty positive. Looks great and comes with a shit ton of accessories. The MG come out fairly recently (2022 which is weird because I thought it had come out in around 2017 or so), but this guy is cheaper, looks better OOB and comes with more accessories. Might as well not give John Bandai money at this point.

Mecha anime needs character and toy designers, not mechanical designers.

Ew. It should be satin, at the very least.

>>23064725
It's not real and it's also not meant for drawn out fights or facing much opposition. They're meant to hit key targets and run. Gloss color also makes it look even more alien than it already is.

I've realized the secret to not trooning out. You have to build models because you have combat vehicle autism. Not because you like anime. So long as you have a love of military specs in your heart, you'll stay a man.

motherfucker literally invented the "mechanical designer" position, it was his idea. The only reason things weren't more detailed in the anime was animation limitations. That became the standard, but Okawara and anyone else (because anyone else can also do whatever they want with the design) had plenty of opportunities for more detailed and mechanical features and took them when they could. Without mechanical designers your hobby wouldn't exist dipshit.

Go Nagai is my favorite mechanical designer
>>
>>23064848
I don't think I quite got my point across right. Sure, he included interior mechanical detail in his illustrations, but they never compromised the sleek exterior design, and he did not limit his designs by real life functionality. The classic RX-78-2 would have no actual articulation because none of its parts have the necessary clearances, but it doesn't matter, because it's an anime character, and animation can cheat. He drew robots, but he didn't pretend to be an engineer designing working machines.

I just straight up witnessed a piece of my kit disappear into thin air, there's no other reason why it fell off gently, landed beside the kit on the shelf, then as I reach for it, it disappears like it never existed in the first place.

The special replacement parts to make ChouRyuuJin, is almost the entire mecha...
You just have to take off a few parts from HyouRyuu and EnRyuu and add them to this.

Yeah, it adds a lot of depth to flat surfaces.
>>

so to achieve that texture i do:
>black base
>random white lines for texture
>the actual paintjob
in that order?
>>

It is a kitbash from MG Age 1 Full Glansa's expansion set and MKV's shield.
>>
>>23065206
That's Gundam MK V shield and somethign else
>>
>>23065222
Pretty much. The exact steps would be:
>Prime in black
>Random lines or dots in a lighter color (light tan or white)
>Numerous very thin base coat layers until the shading shows through and isn't covered up
The last step is the most important, it's really easy to put down too much of the base color. Low PSI and thinner paint is a must.

The only thing i was able to get is making him hold it for a few seconds before falling. I think i will keep it attached to the 0 Raiser until i figure this out. I presume i can put everything on it if i put the rifles on his waist, put the sword in his hand and balance it with the 0 Raiser on his back?

all these years since covid era forcing hard purchase limits and nothing has improved since. If only amiami and hobbysearch just accepted bandai's demands, then HLJ wouldn't be getting swarmed and possibly botted on popular preorders cause they're the only big seller that still lets overseas order bandai kits. I'm surprised no new big site showed up to divert the attention away from HLJ.
It's also bandai being assholes too cause they do not send HLJ enough stock to fulfill preorders. I'm a "day wunner" for the HG Bolinoak, kit released in NOVEMBER, and it's almost Feb now, and they haven't fulfilled my preorder for that kit. It's probably best to just check local stores now, and justified their markup prices by assuming you would have paid that much if you factored in shipping/taxes/customs/etc... As I'm seeing some Bolinoak kits in my area for 50+ CAD, which is around how much I would have paid in total for a 3000 yen kit + shipping.

I had to do the research and yeah, unfortunately the thing that was most important to me (besides the shitty knees) was the head transformation not putting the "mask" underneath the face. This is apparently the case for both the Ver. Ka and OVA. The shitty leg pieces on the Ver. Ka also interfere with waist rotation, I don't know if that was fixed in reprints.

Hobby Lobby has stocked both Zeta Ver. Ka and 2.0 before, sometimes simultaneously, so I'm willing to hold out to see if they'll sell the Unicorn OVA.
>>
>>23066318
After the release of the OVA unicorn they started printing the ver ka with the new, improved knee parts. You're probably not gonna find any left with the knee issues anymore.

How do I panel line black?
>>

Don't get the 1.5 if you only want the S Gundam. It might be the Ex-S 1.5, but for the S Gundam parts alone it's more like 1.25.

The upgrades are really only for the Ex-S part, plus you'd be paying big money for a kit where you won't use most of the parts.
>How much trouble
It won't feel like a modern Bandai kit. Not in the sense that parts won't fit correctly or anything like that, but articulation is very limited, it uses screws in various places, and it won't look great out of the box. The colors are not correct, and the plastic used in those older kits looks terrible without paint.

Are all the HG Macross kits big sticker fests? I liked the one I built as far as the engineering and construction goes. I know people complain about parts forming, but I didn't mind it. Battroid mode felt incredibly stable.

But holy fuck. The stickers. Some made sense, but some of it was just not wanting an extra part on a white runner here and there.

Hey. Relatively new to the hobby. I finished building the Beyond Global RX-78 and moved onto the Blue Destiny Unit 2.

I want to build the Hi-Nu RG next, but I don't feel like my skills are good enough for it yet. In particular, pic related happens sometimes. What causes this? Am I cutting too close to the plastic if I do this? I try to sand it down/polish it up, but these stress marks remain. I don't want my RG to look like this at all.
>>
>>23068391
longsnappers are modellers too
>>
>>23068393
square stress marks are caused by cutting the nub too close to the plastic using nippers that create stress marks
that gouge off to the side is
well
you gouged the plastic

i suggest getting single-bladed nippers (you can get Ruitools for pretty cheap) to eliminate stress marks and then sand down the nub marks with sandpaper of increasing grits instead of cutting them (obviously stop when you get the finish you want)
>>
>>23068393
Definitely cutting way too close to the part.
Try cutting twice and then sanding the remainder of the nub

I got a 30 dollarpair of Stedi nippers the other day, since the cheap hobby kit I got on Amazon had nippers that are bad at best. What grit sandpaper do you recommend for Gunpla? I have some 800 on me in strips.

stay away from this paint. it's like spraying sparkly glitter onto your plastic, and it gives an awful rough finish. the cherry on top is even after cleaning out my airbrush for the Nth time, there's still little sparkly bits in my airbrush.
>>
>>23068393
also: you can reduce but not eliminate stress marks by just applying pressure
rub it hard with the back of your thumbnail and some of the whiteness will disappear
>>
>>23068421
800 should be fine for now

I suggest buying a manicure "block" with multiple surfaces to fill in until you can get other grits
any bigger drug store should have them
you should also get a glass file BUT keep an eye out on what kind of glass file it is. you want a nanoglass file, not a regular frosted-glass type file. if you can't find it you can get them for like a dollar a piece on aliexpress. you can also find packs of sanding sponge of varying grit, look for DSPIAE
melamine foam is also very useful for buffing and getting matt finish
>>
>>23068393
Paint the model, that way you don't have to worry about stress marks and only have to smooth down the nub surface.
>>

It depends on what the part is. If it's a solid, unmoving assembly I prime and paint the whole thing at once. Otherwise it's piece by piece. As far as products, I use clear solvent type matte topcoat as primer since it sticks good and works great for brushed on acrylics. The paints are mostly vallejo since it levels so nicely when done by hand brushing.

If you have something nicer like SAB chisels I don't think it's necessary.

The dom is one of those designs that can only come from the early UC, but in the good way.

oh all those extra layers are just pla-plate
doing that somehow intimidates me less than the idea of scribing new panel lines
>>
>>23068986
Because it's a lot easier to fix mess-ups than scribing.
>>
I long snapped for my first paint job just to practice and now I’m ashamed of it.

Let us see it though.

Thorn and pharact are very good, no seamlines, minimal stickers for areas that have easily paintable details, solid feel. Pharact in particular is impressive OOB
I also did Ur who seems to have bad batches. Mine felt soft and marked easily, akin to a 30mm kit. Nothing too bad but inferior to the other twos

given the price you would think 30mm would at least use decent plastic
>>
>>23069054
It's decent plastic, it's just softer than the plastic they use for gundam. I think it's so that it's a bit more able to be handled. They're meant to be manipulated, taken apart and recombined.

Where were you when the RG GaoGaiGar is planned to be reissued, but as a P-Bandai exclusive from now on?
http://youtube.com/post/UgkxXjNof2QWJv25b0PATw5NU4DsNDt0mcmI?si=6Jdzh-ECypxl20Bt
Only proof for this, but it sucks. And you can't even open P-Bandai Japan links through a terrible region-lock that not even a VPN can pry open.

Red first cut with my decent double-bladed, pink second cut with single-bladed, glass file sand down the rest

Also I always try to position nippers and cut with the thinnest orientation to reduce possible stress on plastic (since the motion is more like crushing and pinching than clean cutting if you gotta force it)

For all regions?
>>

Is this the moderoid? I have a regular kit on a boat somewhere
>>
>>23069072
For any region with P-Bandai. Not even America is safe.

stop spamming random bullshit when a thread nears the image limit. spam is against the rules and everyone here hates it. fuck off with that shit already
>>
>>23069069
My local stores still got some shelfwarming, but I dont care enough nor is FOMO gonna make me buy it. Shame on bandai for doing this shitty evil practice
>>
>>23067983
It's a Robot Spirits figure. Of course there are seamlines.
>>
>>23068835
They're all solid. You can't go wrong with the MC Gundams (especially Calibarn), but I'm also a big fan of the Demi-Trainer and its derivatives. Demi-Garrison is awesome if you can find it.
>>
>>23069059
Now we wait patiently for the other one
>>
>>23069130
>>23069183
You know we have literally no more pics left to bump limit. We wait for the next thread.
>>
>>23069121
what did it G save
>>
>>23069130
Why do you only complain about the image spam when the spamming of shit like "Longsnapping" and "Post your snapgod kinos" actively does more damage to the quality of these threads?
>>
>>23069206
I complain about people who use the term longsnapping and -kino whatever too. They should all fucking kill themselves.
>>
New thread. Reminder to report spam, shitposting, and low-quality copypasta/ritual catchphrases, thanks.

they're currently the "pinnacle" of Bandai's engineering, but they have issues, like C-clips on knees that wears out fast, limited articulation on Aerial's legs (ankles cant rotate longitudinally for some reason) and Grassley suits's pathetic elbow joints.
