-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Any thoughts or advice on how I can make a kit feel more "super robot" like without just glossing it up? I want to put a cool, almost magical looking Gquux up against a matte, worn, gritty Police Zaku and make the two contrast well with eachother.

>>23570657

99% of all super robot looks is posture. Give it a wide stance with a crotch thrust and you're halfway there.

this kit is almost entirely undergated, the moulds are made so that most parts have literally no mould lines because the parts are completely raised above the mould line, the mould lines on parts that have them are less significant than on even a lot of modern bandai kits, and a few parts actually snapfit with bandai-tier tolerances. this kit not being snapfit or moulded in colour is very clearly entirely a choice.
there was an interview with one of the ourtreasure guys before the junone came out where he said something like "we told the engineers to go all out with the moulding, and were originally going to mould it in colour but then we thought wait is full colour injection really suitable for fss?"
all that said, though, there is some very minor (like koto tier) flashing on a few parts

Why would they be autistic and not mold in color, when paintchads spray a giant coat of primer anyway over the whole kit.

I am being tempted to buy the Red Frame Kai and Blue Frame L. They look so good
>>
>>23570926
i have both of those bookmarked along with igx, ty doesn't have jumpwind listed for me any more and 3d fun stores are like 5-6£ a pop. i liked igx in particular because they didn't do the "free shipping" scam and would list paints at a normal price (~£2.50 ea) and shipping wouldn't go up at a linear rate per item added, so you could add more paint pots for like 20p extra shipping cost a pop. "free shipping" listings are a complete scam because you pay pretty much the same cost as the paint pot in shipping for each item. just not worth it

BANDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAI

MG Dom's joints are SUPER TIGHT that I had to sand rape them extra hard to make them thin enough..
I already snapped an arm joint and a hip joint when I was trying to disassemble them.
Fortunately I was still able to make them work, but another hip joint that was already assembled that I didn't sand hard enough is super tight, I just know that if I tried to articulate the leg, it'd snap eventually.

Crazy that I have to treat this MG 2.0 kit like a Daban kit.

avoid the mainstream scenes, transformers, or anything disney. look at nerd shit. heavy gear, battletech, maybe some original IPs... It's an uphill battle because every mainstream American IP is owned by media megacorps and has already been milked to death or is really old and gliding by on boomer nostalgia.

Cars and historicals are both a dead market and oversaturated. It's a chicken and egg problem. Interest in these kits isn't there because the kits are the market are so fucking bad. Go into any arts and crafts store and you'll likely find some Revell shit that's been sitting on the shelf for a decade or more. Revell single-handedly killed an entire sector of the hobby.

Tabletop is dominated by a few really big players, with lots of small manufacturers fighting tooth and nail over the tiny slice of the market not consumed by Games Workshop. I am not sure it's a good place for new manufacturers to try and break into the market.

I have no idea about this. I built a model rocket ~23 years ago and it was fun but I never had any urge to try it again.

>model gasoline cars
These are popular locally because there is an outfit that races them around tracks every weekend, but I have no idea how popular it is at a national level.

They're alright, I only managed to snag the Wing set with the Tallgeese/Leos before all the sets got picked up in my area but the minis are nice. It's got your standard level of Bandai plastic feel and details, so the details aren't comparable to something like a GW mini. I haven't painted mine up yet, just primed them so far.

>>23570742
The appeal of minis are the painting and the sculpts. Just look at what you posted, Everyone's in a static standing pose like they're just standing in a hangar, the plastic is visibly gummy from the picture, and there's missing paint apps on a few of them (Like the yellow on Wing Zero's shoulders and the white details on the Justice's chest). You want some kind of action pose on a mini, even if it's something as simple like running towards the enemy with a beam rifle or heat hawk.

Even a standard "Dude holding gun" pose has more character to it than "3D rendition of Okawara lineart". You're also forgetting that Marines come in boxes of multiples, so you got stuff like
>Sergeant with a melee weapon
>Dude with a rocket launcher
>Dude with a flamer
>Several variations of dude holding a bolter
Not to mention other factions like Orks and Eldar have fairly dynamic poses too. Again not everyone needs to be in a super dynamic pose, but it definitely needs to be more than "Dude at resting neutral pose"

To the other anon doing a metal frame Unicorn, you mentioned yours was based on the Ver Ka with the less articulation. Mine seems to match my old ver OVA in the knee which I thought was one of the changed points.

pretty straightforward build, although the pins that are inserted in the chest and waist that serve to connect the arms and legs are a bit too tight for my liking so I suggest to slightly sand them

it is the size of a HG kit, and the inclusion of a full inner frame makes it basically a RG.

most parts are undergated so cleaning nubs is easy

there are some minor fit issues with the white armor parts in the chest and the legs if you don't look carefully at the instructions, as the sequence order in some pages in the manual is weird

the eyes are molded in a small clear green part, but they are so obscured by the helmet and v fin they are barely visible, not to mention you get no metallic stickers at all like you do with bandai kits, so they don't stand out

still, comes with a wide array of very expressive hands, like this one pointing at (You)

I'm applying the decals it comes with, they are a bit fragile as they can tear easily so you must be careful, but they really make the kit stand out more

I'll probably finish it in a few more days

And finished the main suit today. Took me an hour to get the left knee done as the screw just wouldn't bite. Ended up super glueing it and it seems to be holding up and both joints on it work. The extended knee armor isn't clipping to the psychoframe on either leg, not sure if Bandai or the third party frame's problem but it mostly stays in place.

RG serves both niches. They are tiny and and have a more lengthy assembly with relatively complex structure compares to HG, their designs got heavily refurbished to catch up with the modern taste and trend from mecha genre, which is something most of normies like to shill. 1/144 scale is both: hoarder scale and guerrilla scale. You can buy shitload of 1/144 kits with affordable price and the shelf will contain them all, it is much harder to do this with large 1/100 kits. And it is easy to hide 1/144 kits so your parents won't find out that their 30 years old son is a manchild with a fondness to plastic toys. This mentality is common.
>>
>>23572597
I can fully render an apple in my head, make it grey, blue yellow pink red. Are some people incapable of doing this?

>>23573075

man, I finally finished snapshidding the Yugioh Zeus kit, it's nice and big but has so much fucking issues, holy fuck. I hamhanded some parts, they snapped, had to glue them in place, trying to pose the damn thing is so damn scary cause the plastic feels fragile and there's some areas where the plastic rubs against each other hard. It's also VERY top heavy, can barely pose it doing the "Zeus attack" where the jet turbines face forward in a mega laser attack without the kit starting to lean very hard forward.

Overall it's a neat kit, but if you're not a small Japanese man, you might accidentally hamhand some parts too like me.

If they're lucky the kit's shell will have more or less the correct shape and only require minimal putty work, they will have to buy aftermarket resin and photo etch parts for the rest and redo a bunch of detail by hand

Objectively not true. Military kits are especially detail focused rather than playability, it is up to you to have enough patience to glue all of them or not. Whatever the fanfiction you have in mind that the kit doesn't provide with such is not its fault. If you buy those dogshit vacuuform kits then that's on you.

>>
>>23573764
They're still water based and spray poorly compared to the more popular options.
>>
>>23573750
Depends on the manufacturer. Tamiya often has small details slightly out of scale, and no manufacturer bothers with armor texture.

Nevertheless, probably the most soulful part of armor modeling is modeling a kit off a specific real world vehicle, replicating the battle damage, markings, modifications, and repairs from historical photographs or sometimes viewing the real vehicle in a museum.

>>23573764
NTA, but yes, Vallejo does have an acrylic Mecha Color line. I've never actually seen it in stores, so I don't know how it compares to their model color or game color lines.

>>23573767
I've never personally had a problem spraying Vallejo. If you want to experience pain and anguish, try putting Apple Barrel through your airbrush. I don't know why I did that, but it was a mistake.

Armor texture for unpainted plastic is abit redundant because they will go through alot of other things, from putty or finishing clear coats. Military kits get the real priority straight with this atleast.

It sprays pretty good if you use the actual thinner vallejo sells instead of water. It's the best water based paint you're gonna get for gunpla. Just make sure you clean your gun really well. It'll make itself a problem if you don't.
It's obviously worse than alcohol based paints like aqueous hobby color or tamiya, or lacquers, but so far as water based paints it's very good. It dries a lot harder than most acrylics and has good abrasion resistance.
>>
>>23573760
>>23573767
acrylic paint airbrushing is like stick welding.
if you can master it, you can spray any paint without issue.
lacquers are like MIG welding. easy and retard proof, but people who have only used it will be dogass at stick welding, and struggle when pushed out of their comfort zone.
anyone who struggles spraying acrylics is just generally poor at understanding pressure, thinning ratios, retarder mix and coat thickness.

Acrylics have inferior self leveling and don't dry to a hard, glossy finish, so for the purposes of Gunpla, they are simply inherently inferior.

>>
>>23573828
>they can do both of those things
Most water based acrylics are designed to dry to a matte finish because that's more desirable for miniature painting.
>>
>>23573826
VMC "flat blue" is the glossiest acrylic I've ever seen in my life, somehow glossier than Vallejo's gloss varnish. I have no clue what's in it, but it's a pretty color too.
>>
>>23573831
>Then apply varnish, dummy, that's what it was made for.
If you need 2 layers of paint to achieve what lacquers do in 1 then you're admitting that they're inferior.
>>

this is a good take to respond to not using water based acrylics.

And later they wonder why rest of scale modellers consider Gunpla kids toys.
>>
there's such a thing gloss acrylics and matte lacquers
>>
>>23573850
Matte lacquers exist and so do glossy, self leveling acrylics.
>>
>>23573847
>You should be clearcoating lacquers too.
If you spray lacquers properly, you don't need another layer of gloss clear before panel lining and doing decals. With water based acrylics, you do. So for the purposes of gunpla, lacquers are simply better.
>>23573850
>lack of understanding of paint properties
I literally just listed those same properties earlier, the properties of lacquers are simply better for Gunpla than those of water based acrylics. I don't care if you can paint your model with supermarket craft paint and get a good result.

>>23573856

Okay, as usual, I dropped by to upload some pictures of a model I just finished. Sort of, since G-Bouncer is painted in his original colors but I wanted something safe and mono-color since this was also my first time using airbrush, at least for white parts. And it went... mediocre. Barely could see shading despite going in 4 steps total (Vallejo Blue Grey Pale, Sky Grey, White Grey and finally White). Applying lines went quite bad later, caught a lot of dust too in the process. But hey, first pancakes are always burnt or something like that.

But to be honest, given all associated work with setting everything up, cleaning after, etc, etc, I honestly think that I will simply leave airbrush to perform priming, base color application and varnishing, leaving rest to my trusted brush. I simply feel that I have much better control that way and don't have to stop every minute because tank is getting re-filled again (could be some leakage, tho, I don't believe that few short bursts will empty 3L tank).

Anyway, full small gallery here:

Seeing listings on AliExpress for HG Narrative B Pack and ReZEL bootlegs.
>>
>>23573988
Shitpla would get laughed off of any shelf not in Japan. They probably wouldn't even make back the money on the shipping alone.
>>
>>23573992
Do yourself a favor and buy the MG instead. HG Narrative sucks.
>>
>>23573999
MG Narrative B costs like $150
no one should pay that much for Katokislop from a mid movie

Lego won't have issue like this. Lego listens to consumer so well and never have Stock crisis, QC problem, never have disastrous kits like shitpla, so that they never get their sale fallen by Chinese bootlegs as there no Chinese bootleg better than actual lego aside from military ones.
While Bandai used to mog lego twice by killing bionicle and hero factory, but they lost their mind and does anti consumerism shit like controlling stock by purpose, QC issue like RG wing gundam zero's part being damaged or missing, epyon's wing having craters.
Why did Bandai and Lego's state got reversed? When bandai mogged lego twice, but bandai's sale falls while lego's sale rise. Lego never does anti consumer habits like shitty QC, controlling stock to cause stock crisis, making disastrous kit like shitpla for being Westerners being superior.

Bandai don't give a flying fuck if Ver Ka MGs make them billions every year. They want to stretch themselves super thin with random new IPs that no one asked for.

Calling Unkosul slops is an insult to actual slops ( 30MM )

I don't hate the idea of 30MM but in practice they're just so butt ugly. They should've just put more focus on the builder parts line

Why did Bandai and Lego's state got reversed? When bandai mogged lego twice, but bandai's sale falls due to Chinese bootlegs being black ships, while lego's sale rise. Lego never does anti consumer habits like shitty QC, controlling stock to cause stock crisis, making disastrous kit like shitpla for being Westerners being superior. Lego won't get mogged by Chinese bootlegs as no Chinese bootleg lego is superior than actual lego, for Lego has better technology, QC and never looks consumers down so they never gets mogged by Chinese bootlegs, like final warriors. While Japanese plamodel market has been dominated by Chinese bootleg, but lego won't suffer this.

The problem is that Bandai didn't have competition for the longest time, and so they grew arrogant and anti-consumer.
Hopefully, Chang can steal more of the market and humble them.
>>
>>23574066
Lego won't make disastrous kit like unkosul DEIs. As West is superior and has superior technology. Lego never causes stock crisis.

Meanwhile, Lego which has been mogged by bandai twice in bionicle and hero factory never does anti consumer habit like QC problem, no stock crisis on lego, no disastrous kit like unko. Lego listens to consumer so well that they never gets their market taken away by Chinese bootlegs, and never gets humbled while Bandai's sale is plummeting due to Chinese bootlegs being black ships. How can this happen while Bandai used to defeat lego twice? No Chinese bootleg lego is better than actual lego unless it is military one, which lego cannot have due to their ethos.
>>
>>23574078
Did Bionicle and Hero factory's death made them arrogant? Bandai used to have soul when bionicle existed as bionicle was a competitor on gunpla.

Lego has their own shittiness as well. say what you want about John Bandai, but at least you can be rest assured that they will at least reprint their old stuff, even if it takes decades.

Lego never reprints old stuff, do you how much I miss Space Cop 1,2,3, all those old fantasy and knight and castle sets from old Lego? I just want a Solar Snooper set man.....
