-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Question for the anons that got the Osiris, what type of plastic is it made of? Am I safe with my lacquers or is it full of ABS?

Total noob at painting here: I'm wondering if it's a bad idea to use pre-diluted paint meant for airbrushing to do weathering by drybrushing.
It's the only metallic paint I have at the moment.
>>
>>23622784
What type of paint is it?
>>
>>23622785
It's acrylic (from Army Painter to be exact)
>>
Thanks to my country's shitty customs I can't import topcoat and the likes, what can I use to cope?
>>
>>23622784
it should work fine as long as you minimize paint on brush (this should always be the case for drybrushing). it just will take more time to build up highlights, which will have the benefit of giving more control
>>
>>23622298
I hate the head bump

I did work on my groupbuild, I still need to build/modify parts but the rest I already figured out got a coat of primer today and the body is already painted in the main color. If I don't fuck up the paint there is a good chance I will be done in time.
Finally snapped this Zaku II because I maybe need the waist powercables beads for the groupbuild build, I have metal ones but they are not shaped so I am not sure yet wich look better.
Also RG ZakuII is an awsome kit! It is the first RG I build and it is really a small marvel of plastic moulding tech already looking like that just snapped oob, Idk how it holds up over time but all those people screeching it is horrible just have a skill issue/need to take their retalin for that sweet hyperfocus. I Can symphatize if yo have big hands but that is something we chose to do to ourself if we engage in small things hobbies so cannot really complain there.

just keep in mind that if you are actually properly using the tiny amount of paint for drybrushing, you can undo anything by using a similar amount of the base color you are brushing on top of.

I mean my lacquer top coat broke ABS in my Shining Gundam's arm the other week. That was a Bandai premolded frame part ABS which is a bit weaker.
I'll just buy the Aqueous stuff to be safe.

>>
>>23622878

lacquers work great on ABS because they have more bite
>>
Just finished my FigureArts Kamen Rider Kiva I bought earlier this year, you anons weren't joking with the amount of stickers this has. Does Ultraman Geed Primitive from the same line also have a crazy amount of stickers? I mean I am glad I built it even if Kiva isn't my favorite (unless we mean just the Pre-Decade Heisei Riders, then he is).

Earlier I bought one of those Max Factory Bushmen from Dougram, all the other Max Factory stuff was anywhere between 60 to 120 on Amazon while this guy was only 31 bucks, I figured that would be an easy steal. Worst case scenario I got something to practice paint on.
>>
>>23622970
rattlecan? it's easy to overdo rattlecans because they blast out so much shit at once. abs is weaker to lacquer thinners than ps (especially if stressed) but it's not a problem unless you're completely drenching the part in it. i've painted a ton of abs with lacquers through an airbrush and never had a single issue. i've never used rattlecans though and i don't think i'd trust those because there's no control and they shoot out a metric fuck ton of shit with the slightest press
>>
>>23622997
No it was Mr Hobby GX Clear in an airbrush. Even did it a bit light when near the joint/positioned the arm in a way that it was mostly protected by the shoulder.
I either got unlucky with some pooling, or those stress marks that appear in the premolded parts let in the lacquer thinner.
I was just trying to avoid buying more paint before non-aqueous Mr surfacer white got back in stock. It's been OOS everywhere in the US so I'm assuming the distributor just hasn't gotten any.

>>
>>23623012
I saw both on Amazon, that version costed more money and I had no use for the bike figure so I went with the regular. Are Bushmen just hated? Is it because preddit/blue sky did a boycott? Not following.

Went to go look and... Does no one stock the Aqueous clears in jars in the US? I'm just finding the rattle cans.

This guy has some good videos on painting ABS:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2oAD5s7UzU

The main takeaway is that you have to apply very light coats ontop of each other.

>>
>>23623030
Yep, this was discussed when I posted pictures and bitched. No need to cover it again. Like I said it was presumably the stress marks behaving like nicks, or I didn't wait long enough after my first light coat (only waited like 5 minutes/ looked visually dry).

Why, most likely it's just going to be the shelf warmers they can't get rid of, and/or a bunch of clear color shit. There's zero chance it's going to be stuff that I actually want and need, there's not suddenly going to be shit that hasn't actually been reprinted in several months, or kits that haven't even been sold on the US side for years and/or haven't even appeared on the website before. Plus, whatever shit they put in those boxes, unless it's actually curated and not just random shit tossed together, means you'll have to buy the base kits to go with it if it's something like an expansion parts package (e.g. if they give you the Barbatos Expansion kit, you'd have to go out of your own way to buy the MG Barbatos if you want to actually make use of it).

Box just showed up today. Looking at the runners, I have a gripes already in that there's some plated pieces that aren't undergated, so they're going to have to be stripped before painting.
The overall presentation is pretty good, though. She even comes with a little holographic bookmark thing and a bit of packaging that folds out with a printed cityscape on it to use as the background of a diorama.
Here's the box with a Megami Device box for scale.

But yeah, the actual selection of gunpla though, kinda mid. Even for the regular shelves aka the non gundam base exclusives, there's too many damn clear colors.

You guys got any tips for a smoother painting workflow when you paint the inner frame with metallics?
The inner frame needs a gloss top coat but the armor needs flat. It's easier to apply decals and do weathering on the assembled kit, so I have to dissassemble the armor every time I want to apply a flat top coat.
>>
>>23624684
I mean, I do it all in pieces, then put it together once. No idea why you'd do it over and over again. The rare occasion I can't, it's because of a seam weld, and in that case I've modified the assembly so the seam welded parts are together but nothing else, so it would still be separate.
>>
>>23624699
I find weathering to be very awkward to do on separate pieces.
>>
>>23624709
I just lay them out flat, somewhat like they would look. I agree it can be awkward, but also the weathering process of gunpla is nowhere near as involved as armor or aircraft so it's not a big deal. Ontop of that, scale is an important factor which means unless it's big damage, you're not seeing the stories so much. Just hours on field.

sorry for the retarded question here because I'm a noob when it comes to bootleg kits. how are the quality of some of the stuff from aliexpress? I was looking for a few kits like the Solomon and the MG red astray(big sword). and the pricing is really good for bootleg shit. It mainly depends on the specific bootlegging group, some of them will churn out stuff that's about 80-90% of the way there but for about 50% of the price, and you have to be okay with doing your own work to polish the kit off. For the most part, if it's an "original" kit then it's probably going to be okay, but do your due diligence and Google to see if there are any problems with that particular kit, there was a scare last year or so where a bootleg 1/144 scale "RG" Nightingale was giving modelers skin rashes because they used some kind of caustic chemical as mold release and didn't bother cleaning it off before shipping.

With regards to the GP02 bootleg, people buy it because the only alternative is an old-ass 1998 MG kit that has aged horribly. Everything I've heard about it is positive, so you probably won't go wrong there. If you're buying something from Daban, their 6000-series kits tend to be lackluster but still worth it for the money you spend. This particularly applies if they're the only options for kits that haven't been reprinted in ages or are hard to get on P-Bandai. Again, be ready to do your own finishing and fixing because bootlegs tend to be full of imperfections that you just don't see on Bandai kits.
>>
>>23625077
Solomon isn't bootleg, but plagiarism.
Bootleg is like JMS, GaoGao and Daban who copied Bandai's runners 1-1. it's not worth it if you have money to buy Bandai since bootleg will have issues, especially fitment issues that you need to fix with sanding, trimming or even gluing.

Depends on the brand and specific kit. Some JMS models are indistinguishable from bandai aside from some very small fitting differences, for example. Some are kinda bad (looking at you, daban). I wouldnt buy bootleg MGs and definitely not RGs, though.
Then there's original chink kits. They can be awesome, but it depends on your price range. Often in the same price range as a MGEX or a PG

I'm going to be real man, out of the last 5 HGs I've built, I've had more trouble with Bandai than the bootlegs. And these arent old bandai kits either, most are from 2015-2018 (the bandai one from 2006 is the better of the bunch, ironically).

then there's cases like Theo, Gray Zeta, and Super Gundam where Daban went lengths to improve the original Bandai kit's issues by improving the frame design and/or add greebles on the armor. also the 88XX series where they're Metal Builds/ converted into model kits. they're on a grey area between counterfeits and a plagiarized model kit.

To be fair, the clear Woundwort is the cloudy, translucent clear that doesn't use the same shitty and brittle plastic as regular clears and AoZ stuff have historically been popular P Bandai items, but the Woundwort itself is what makes the choice odd. They've reprinted it a bunch, bring out stuff like Haze'n-thleys that get printed rarely or things we've never seen outside of Japan like the HG Hrududu units.

>>23625460
What part broke? I'm slowly working on this kit and if it's something I can reinforce, I'll tackle it now.
>>
>>23625509
The firdt few passes should be EXTREMELY light, do at least 3 or 4 with basically no pressure and it will make it easier. Ignore the chinaman youtubers that do it freehand, they have some strange genetic mutation that lets them scribe freehand. Also try your best to lightly press against the guide tape, thats why its there
>>
>>23625603
Not gonna like, I think that actually looks pretty good. Other than the head, I still prefer the real Qubeley's smooth head. That chink version looked as though its head is cracked.
>>
>>23625615
>Not gonna like
*lie
>>
>>23625509
Don't try to make the line in a single pass. Putting too much pressure on the chisel will make it tend to jump around more. Also don't try to force the chisel into the tape as you'll actually carve out the side of the tape making the line crooked, as much as possible pull in the intended direction. Several low pressure pulls will leave a cleaner line. I would recommend finding something to practice on, it takes time to scribe cleanly, I'm still trying to do it better myself.
>>
>>23625416

I've continually put off on mine because I want to change some of the proportions and also make a diorama of the last CG from total eclipse. not really a huge fan of the 1/144 muv-luv kits in general though. the non-scales have a lot more extras from the vn/integral works

Yeah, I think they are built off the frame arms platform which is more of a customizable thing.
>Also had an idea to fill in the words on the swords in some brushed Mr Color aqueous I had sitting around and just cleaning the extra off with some iso. Not as bright as I was hoping for (it was Ariel blue)
Needs more white pigment to make it pop. Aqueous in general covers worse than the solvent stuff, so it tends to be crushed if you paint it over a dark color.

Need to add more water prior the 3rd coat? Didn't stir it properly?

I'll try sanding off those bits later and see if it can be fixed. Thank goodness I had enough sense to just paint a few parts to see how things work out.

>Hand paint with brush.
hmmm that's weird considering how smooth your paint job looks, it could be dust or the paint was in the process of coagulating when you did that part. I recommend using a self leveling thinner, if you are using acrylics try the orange cap tamiya thinner.
>>
>>23626738
>The grey is the paint.
You wouldnt happen to be using vallejo, would you?

I'll look into that, thanks.

The suit is almost done. The fingers need another layer of paint but I will apply that tomorrow. That and panel lining the arms are all that's left.

this is probably my un-kolling.
>>
>>23626557
Ahh interesting. I still have to read Alternative, as it wasn't out when I read unlimited/extra and then when I finally went to read it there was that weird publisher switch on Steam and it took them a year to give me my new steam key.
>>
>>23626835
I mean why wouldn't they? It is a Bandai Hobby release.

>>
>>23626840
not every toy gets imported here. we never got Hyper Yoyo Accel toys even though they're way better than shitpla.
>>
>>23626847
Why would a hobby store import toys? Shitpla are in the same category as Gunpla, FRS and 30MM.
>>
>>23626835
They don't sell them at my local stores in Jakarta/ Indonesia. At the very least, I've not seen them in the stores I've visited near my area. Even right now during the pop up thing, they've got other stuff like 30mm series, pokemon, yugioh and other assorted plamo franchise, but no poopla.
>>
>>23626850
I fully expect to see them. I also fully expect 90% of them to shelfrot and as soon as stores refuse to buy them Bandai will fuck off and sell them to India and develop some new shitpla idea to prevent having to reprint good kits or make new kits.

not this shit again
let's cut the crap
every time these childrens' toys are mentioned the thread really goes into the toilet
you can't just say bandai is taking a shit on their fans
if they flood the markets with master grades then prices will have to take a dump
and shareholders will be left with turds
>>
>>23626954
exactly why the enshittification is happening. instead of giving what fans want, they're trying to put artificial FOMO by not reprinting enough or locking it behind p-bandai exclusivity because they know that generates more profit
