Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

went to the local anime con today and there's someone selling a MG Victory Gundam, its a bit in the reasonable scalper price, just 15 usd above the original MSRP.

hesitated to buy it because its the base Victory and not the V-Dash. I dunno if I should wait for a reprint of V-Dash or just buy the kit

The squad theme seemed interesting, but a predetermined color scheme doesn't sound all that fun. It'd only mean that the final entrants would all look the same.

200% msrp is my limit when it comes to scalped kits. 300% if I really really want it, but anything past that is too insulting even if it technically only costs a small amount of grown up money.
I think even if I became a billionaire, I would still limit myself to those price ranges.

>AC kits are meant to be painted
Absolutely, their Gen 5 kits don't even have any part separation. It actually resembles scale models more than children's toys.
I guess its a blessing that we don't actually need to boil any of the parts to get them to fit.
>>
>>23658841
Even with part separation, you won't be able to get that dirty rusty artstyle anyway. Gen 5 part separation is ok, but not as many as their Gen 3 kits. I guess there were alot of complains about the difficult assembly, especially the Aaliyah.
>>
>>23658845
I'm actually more worried about the plastic. The sheen looks like weimei tier and I fear that it might not even react well to plastic cement.
I wonder if you need to go all in and use epoxy putty with these things.
>>
>>23658848
No you don't have to go that far. The only thing that are objectively bad about these kits are the dogshit polycaps.
>>
I know you guys hate beginners but kinda struggling to up my kit game.
I've been just creating plastic kits straight (sometimes even skipping stickers) but I want to start getting into painting/marking/whatever to make my kits look way nicer. (I also need better sanding technique. I can't seem to get the real stubborn nubs out of the way). Anyone got any guides or places to start? A place where I get my gunpla stuff is having a sale so I want to pick up some actual "detailing" stuff but not sure what to get.
>>
>>23658746
MG Dash is due for a reprint next year
>>
>>23658890
Glass files are a good way to get rid of nubs with minimal effort and risk. If you want to get into painting, that's a whole other can of worms since the entry cost to that is a full airbrushing setup and a shitload of paint, as well as top coating.
>>
>>23658900
What path would you try next after just kit building? Markers? I really want to try upping my game but I have no idea where to start.
>>
>>23658890
Hobby knife and a glass file should be enough to deal with all nubs.
With painting it's a matter of how much you're willing to commit. You can grab a bunch of markers with primary colors and few metallic ones and it would be enough as a beginner for color correction on minor details.
Try grabbing few decal sheets and some topcoat, that would also improve the looks without much effort
>>
>>23658904
Try rescribing panel lines and using panel liner. You can try out waterslide decals along with this as well. Tamiya panel liner is what most people use but be aware that it is an enamel wash and enamel can very quickly eat through plastic and make it brittle to the point where it will crumble or snap. It should be applied to kits before assembly or after a gloss coat. You can use a water based panel liner instead which is completely safe for plastic. For colour correction on small details, you can hand brush enamel/acrylic paints. You could use gundam markers but I never found them to be great.

This is an older set of videos but the ideas still apply: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4QfY11-9-EOcxKrs8C-5b01BAihiZoN6
>>
>>23658705
Wait, this is actually in scale?
>>
>>23658904
Clean nub removal, panel lining, waterslide application and top coating are all part of the basics.

For nub removal, it mainly comes down to how good you are with a hobby knife and sandpaper (multiple grits may be needed). Good nub removal starts with how you remove it from the runner, a good set of nippers helps but there's no need to invest in the $100 stuff. Again, a glass file helps with that a lot.

Panel lining with markers is super easy, you can literally clean up the overflow with your own spit (though obviously an actual cleaning agent like a q-tip dipped in alcohol works far better and is a lot more sanitary). Panel wash is a lot easier and involves about as much cleanup but should never be done on bare plastic since it can pool and crack it, that's something you should wait until after doing proper paint jobs to learn.

Waterslides should become second nature if you really want to make your kits look good. If you have experience doing it on plane/ship model kits then it's basically the same stuff, but you'll also have to learn how to use decal setter and decal softener. Overall it's not that difficult, especially if you use good third-party waterslides that don't tear with the slightest amount of force, but it's still something you want to get practice at.

Top coats are the finishing touch, usually done on top of the paint and waterslide job to lock it all in and protect the paint. Some people put gloss coat on before waterslides since that makes them easier to work with. It's also sometimes necessary to put down a coat before panel washes, depending on the types of paint you're using.
>>
>>23658890
Godhand nipper, chinese potmetal hobby knives, sanding boards and sanding sponges.
Ideally, you get as much done with your knife as possible.
From there you use cement to weld plastic pieces together and putty to fix mistakes during the cutting phase.
Light spray of primer to see mistakes. Superglue to fill in sinkhole in the plastic, then sand it back to level with a sanding board if its a flat piece, or a sanding sponge if its a curved piece. Prime again, see if there are more imperfections. Then repeat until the kit is as good (or bad) as you can manage.
Only when that is done can you even think about using paint.

Not everybody is an bitter /gpg dweller my dude. For the average modeller or non authist it is way more easy and cheap to pick up a Bandai kit, put on some panel lines and topcoat and have a cool robot than it is to do the same with a Volks or GSC kit, all kits ofcourse look better the more effort you put in. If you don't like Bandai designs that is a matter of taste and I respect that.
>>
>>23659315
Just use a scribe to sharpen the important details and let paint do the hard work.
>>
>>23659322
Truth
Bandai kits may not always be visually stunning but in terms of general quality and ease of assembly you're not getting better, especially not at the $20-30 price point of the average HG. You won't be dealing with horrible mold issues or mandatory screws/glue or anything like that and for modern kits the manuals are usually even bilingual
You can tell because most of the bitching about Bandai kits is about either aesthetic choices (proportions/lineart issues) or availability, not assembly

With 20 to 30 bucks, you can go for the Changs and get a both cheap and visually stunning kit with the increasingly improved assembly experience in the recent years. But obviously, you are gonna insult this shit because your argument was never about the quality.

Aye, thank you for the heads up! I am not some Bandai only fanboy, I always joke Bandai makes money despite and not because of itself, but I know what else is out there so I still say that for the General public they are the best. Even og design Changpla prolly has a big fight against the stigma of being cheap crap and a lot of people still don't trust AliExpress. But some local online retailers are starting to stock some og sculpts, reactions for the Axis Kshatriya were mostly positive and the upcoming 1/60 king crab z'gok look impressive af so they seem to be working hard to get more recognized and serious about it. A bit of competition for those dinosaurus over at Bandai hq is a good thing.

https://gundam.fandom.com/wiki/Gundam_Side-F

At Side-F you can get the RG Nu-FF, MG Re-GZ 1.5, and the 1/144 balloons for CCA and 0080. Don't think I've ever seen the balloons sold at P-Bandai, and buying the kits in person is significantly cheaper than buying online. My mom bought me the RG Nu-FF for the equivalent of $31 USD when she went to Fukuoka on vacation last year, if you bought that on US P-Bandai you'd pay probably triple that.

https://gundam.fandom.com/wiki/The_Gundam_Base_Tokyo

Gundam Base Tokyo has a lot more selection, but unfortunately it's mostly clear color and special coating kits. Their specialty looks to be the Unicorn Perfectibility, which again you can probably get for a fraction of what they charge outside of Japan.

I post that, then immediately remember the boxing gloves ( the skulls), and the beam effects you can put on the I-Field generators (which I think are supposed to be reflected beam energy).
>>
>>23659807
the beam effects are for the brand markers, the big ones are for beam shields and the smaller cross shaped beams are for punching with when they flip over the hands
the I-Fields are the shoulder skulls that can become boxing gloves
>>
>>23659802
Really? I swore they could go wider left/right, but I might be remembering wrong. Would have been cool to have anyway to help with balancing. Might need to make this guy's feet heavier somehow as he is barely standing without the Full Cloth or his large weapons.

>>23659806
Should post the face opening as that is the true Psychoframe activation.

Also the Crossbone really makes the V and V2 look under armed, even if both would smoke it with maneuverability and their VSBRs being smaller/faster shooting. I'm actually surprised those didn't have I-Fields given the X-3 had 2.
>>
>>23659813
The only things they really do are be the X-shape, come together, and come together and point down parallel to the body so the cloak mounts over them
>>
>>23659813
V2A has I-Fields. They lack as much built in armament, but in exchange they separate and transform into multiple components and utilize hardpoints again for equipment expansion.

What characterizes mortar headds is organic armor shapes over detailed frames, that Sazabi with all its random jagged edges and panel lines steals some MH design elements (the shoulders from Bang Doll, the pincer shield from LED Mirage, the leg hatches from Engage SR1...) but totally misses what makes those designs look good

Yeah, it's a weird enough suit, but I thought the whole point was that Amuro's good with any dinky suit you give him, rather than that anything he pilots has to be a Gundam. Does the Re-Gz count as a Gundam? I hope not, just let it be its own thing.
>>23657931
I mean, testbeds are fine, the Hyakushiki was a testbed for transformation but we don't count that as a Gundam, right? (Right??)
>it's always permanent
What am I thinking of then? I know it wears off/melts off after a few hits, but I swear I read that some versions wear off after a few minutes.

>and allies cheer when seeing me).
I will STILL do this for the Hyakushiki though, this is a very cute way of putting it.
>It's a little silly now because there's a ton of machines all in the era using Anti Beam Coating which have no gold tint
Maybe it was an experimental kind of beam coating!
>the vernier and wings are for agility, not speed.
I thought about it over dinner, I actually don't know how verniers work. A bunch of the tiny holes I see are probably verniers, micro-thrusters that are good for turning and repositioning, but also thrusters are a thing and so are auto-balancers? I don't know how center of mass works but I assume you need a few verniers going pffpffpftt for you to do a 180 in place. I've also rarely noticed them for 0079 kits apart from the Ball, Rick Dom or anything with outright 400 thrusters like the Zeong, and certainly not the Gundam, although the Alex seemed to have quite a few verniers.

How would I achieve this without LEDs? Just bright white paint for the camera? Maybe yellow to contrast with the red visor?

Purple Power from the automotive section of Walmart. I've left parts sitting in that shit overnight, and it cleans everything off while leaving the plastic untouched.

Other options include Simple Green and cleaning alcohol as the other anon mentioned.
>>
>>23660502
You can sand after painting using a very high grit to get the next layer to adhere better and to clean up any possible defects during the painting process.
>>
>>23660506
I see, I'll try that next time.
>>
>>23660506

From experience, I don't recommend. They leave strands and shit behind. If you're gonna use a paper towel use one of those ones that aren't made of cotton. No dust or strands left behind. Maybe some sort of spray degreaser too.

There is absolutely no excuse for GW being allowed to charge as much as they do for their tiny plastic board pieces. Doesn't matter how "well detailed" they are, there is no situation where a commercial piece of plastic should cost more than its weight in gold. Small wonder that so many people have turned to 3D printing their armies instead (which GW will literally issue lifetime bans from their stores for), not to mention how they're actively searching out and trying to shut down "piracy" sites and Telegram channels.

I think that part of it is the UK's terrible economy. Even Japan's contracting economy hasn't led to terrible utility prices that make manufacturing unviable.
I can't excuse how shit their kit quality is though. One Imperial Knight is 3-4 times the price of an MG with zero color separation and close to non-existent articulation. Shit westoid design too as they can't get good artists. It's amazing how bad the manufacturing from a country that started the industrial revolution is these days.

This toolkit is dogshit. Buy them separately from ali and you will get better quality for cheaper.

Instead of regular files, buy manicure glass nanofiles (NOT THE FROSTED GLASS ONES) for nub removal. Buy a regular nail buffing multi-surface block from any drug store for surface balancing (the glass file will leave a very shiny spot, you use the block to buff it to match the rest of the surface).

Those nippers are dogshit, buy Ruitool 1.0 purple handles.

Buy any cheap chinese potmetal hobby knife, the one with long blades is extremely sharp. Same for any random cutting mat and tweezers. You will overpay if you buy a kit. Just order it all through aliexpress, at worst you will get the same stuff for a better price.

>I think that part of it is the UK's terrible economy.
Lmao, what the fuck are you talking about. Warhammer minis used to be made out of diecast metal, then they switched to plastic as a cost saving measure. After they switched, the prices started going up year on year. Warhammer costs as much as it does because the fanbase are cucked and will continue to pay. My friends stopped playing warhammer 10 years ago and switched to infinity out of principal due to the constant cost increases and GW have continued to do even more price increases. The only economical point that might apply here is that more and more of the consumer market is being made up by the top 30% of earners. So for every 10 people that drop off due to cost increases, a single person will out spend them and then some. Companies are making more money than ever from an increasingly smaller amount of consumers.

One of the most popular nipper brand in Japan is Godhand. The Chinese made the bootleg Godhand nippers and have been selling them for a very cheap price.
>>
>>23660913
Fascinating, thanks. I didn’t realize they made bootlegs of tools too lol. How can I get one? Just search godhands on AliExpress?
>>
>>23660815
Here's a general list of stuff you actually do need:

>mandatory
Cutting mat
Hobby knife
Glass file
Generic nippers (doesn't have to be super fancy)

>very recommended but ultimately optional
Sandpaper, multiple grits
Set of guitar picks, thinnest option available
Circular/round file
Tweezers
Sanding sticks/sponges
Pin vise

Generally, I wouldn't recommend buying a starter kit since it'll probably contain loads of duplicate shit that you already have or stuff you don't actually need, and ultimately not save you that much money. It's smarter to curate what you actually need and shop for the best options.

I feel like I shouldn't struggle as much with seam welding as I do
The parts will weld together properly but the seam is still visible half the time, I almost never get the "squelch" of material that's the ideal, even if I sand or cut down the interior connections to let them fit more snugly. I've tried Mr Cement, Tamiya, and Tamiya Extra-Thin and the issue persists with all of them on every kit and I hate not being able to get a smooth surface
How do I remove seams in pieces that have already been welded together?
>>
>>23661098
You could build up a bit of material with super glue and then file it flush

milliput, just mix up the two parts, roll it into a snake, and fill the parts. DO NOT use green stuff as it is gummy and will not sand down. or like >>23661099 said you can get some thin styrene sheets and cut them to length, glue them on the parting line, and sand it flush. also if you use extra thick tamiya to glue the two halves together and clamp them in place for a few hours, the plastic will melt into a solid part and it can be sanded down.

Finished assembling the Kshatriya's frame. Something is off with the shoulders, there's a sliding part that is supposed to slide down into the shoulder pin that locks these massive binders upright, but I can't seem to get them to lock. Unless they're decently balanced, they tend to flip forward which would make the kit do a flip off my shelves that would look cool but would probably break a lot of parts. This is easily the heaviest kit I've built including PGs and the Perfect Zeong so a trip to the floor isn't ideal. I'll take the shoulders back apart and try to sort it out. Everything has to come apart anyways to attach the armor.

I had the same issue. First, make sure the silver rings are on the right direction (they can be partially on when flipped upside down) and pushed in the whole direction. They should be flush against the next piece in with no gap.
If that is true, check if the lock goes into the notch on the peg. If it does, it might just be sliding off as the arms hold in the shoulders depth.
>>
>>23661674
I like it. imo the new shoulders, chest and skirt armor parts give the design some much-needed bulk without subtracting from the engineering that made it such a beautiful kit to begin with. Also,it comes with everything you need to make the stock Nu so you're free the mix and match the design how you see fit
