-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Wing Zero Custom
Full Armor ZZ
Zeta
Sinanju Stein Narrative

The ones you don't want are:
RX-78-2 (old as all hell and has nowhere near the motion range of the 2.0 or 3.0)
Unicorn (still has the shitty waist and no head vulcans that are fixed in the OVA version kit)
Sinanju (waist peg is made of weak material that snaps super easy, was fixed in the OVA version along with giving you the free bazooka)
Crossbone X1 (Full Cloth has a shitload more accessories for essentially the same body)
Wing (the newer EW is exactly the same thing but printed in better colors and comes with an Action Base adapter)
Banshee (is basically the Banshee OVA kit but gets rid of the cool extra weapons in exchange for waterslides)

>>

The 78-2 ver Ka is pretty slick looking regardless of being dated. More annoying than articulation is a number of ugly seam lines. The old 2 part head molds suck. As long as you don't mind putting in a little work and don't want to pose it doing a handstand it's a nice sculpt.

Levels of Gunpla Builders

Level 0 - Non-Builder: Bandai's cashcow (metal build) and 2nd hand market's exit liquidity (action figure fans)
Level 1 - Snapper: straight build without any real effort (MechaQueerkotsu & the average consumer)
Level 2 - Effort Snapper: panel lining, decaling, top coating (ZackAreola & most people who participate in online communities)
Level 3 - Painter: they paint (most relevant Japanese gunplatubers)
Level 4 - Customizer: scribing and modifying parts (RAYSTUDIO)
Level 5 - Resin Builder: possesses the skills from all the previous levels and want to go further beyond (JL Gunpla UK. Japanese builders will NEVER reach this level because resin kits are illegal 海賊版, which is a kryptonite for the Japanese)
Level 6 - Creator: isn't satisfied with kits that are provided by the market, proceed to create their own (the Creatives behind Chinese 3rd Party Brands)

Which one are you?

level 0 here. I barely even build the kit I bought because I'm afraid I'll botched it. So I waited until I could buy HG that I don't like first to experiment but even before that I need the tools for it, like sandpaper and such which I still haven't bought because I don't know where to buy it cheap. And even before I start all of those, I'm buying another kit that I like that I'm afraid to botched it if I build it and the cycle continues.
>>
>>23696627

>>
>>23696627
5, almost 6 but I don't have time for that yet.
>>
>>23696627
I'm probably around Level 3.5. I paint and have done minor kitbashing in halfhearted attempts to join groupbuilds, but I also have the tools for scribing and am currently learning to make molds for resin casting.

it is cheap and I say you get a good deal for its price due to the huge size, the included LED and the gigantic base

there is even an option part for the plate at the top of the head in case you don't want the side antenna, not to mention they cockpit can open and they even included a little figure pilot sitting inside the torso

I just built my first model and had so much fun I want to buy more and I'm waiting for my fucking paycheck to clear because I've been nervously staring at "Only 4 left in stock" for two days now. Anyway, buddy at work is all gunpla'd out and just brought me some panel liner and markers. I need to go grab a sheet of decals. I thought the model came with some. So we will see how much I butcher my current model during my trial version. If it's not bad, I'll be hanging out in 2 for a long time. If not, I'll buy a bunch of models, level 1 them, and drop them in the garbage once complete because all I want to do is build them.

I hate the Katoki went crazy with all the panel lines and hatches on the Ver Ka Sazabi, when he really didnt do that with the Zeta, ZZ, Hi-Nu and V2.

In theory, if you ignored nubs, original 30MM models could be built in less than 30 minutes due to their simplified structure. It's just that they kept introducing more and more models to the line.

But since that included 30 Minutes Sisters, I don't mind. I love Sisters.

I don't need it because those aren't really small dimensions. The Bawoo neck is measured in cm and requires maybe mm scale of precision to do anything there. This is literally just a random part I'm cleaning up from a spare to be used as tubing for a Kshatriya, probably for its neck but maybe for its arms. It's 1cm long. I'm cleaning up and rescribing the lines without magnification, then I'll do the same to the other so they're the same. Is this impossible?

What the fuck. I came in asking for magnifying equipment recommendations. I was instantly insulted by you and at least 3 other people about being old and blind for simply asking a question about equipment that is a staple of the hobby. I shitpost back out of spite. I then posted examples AT YOUR REQUEST for things I used magnification for and was flippantly told I don't need it and made to feel like I'm lesser for having used it. So now you're the victim? I use GX Clear as a lacquer, but I recently picked up the Kaleido Colorworks and the Matte has worked as good as the GX clear while being acrylic. It also comes prethinned for .3mm airbrushes so it's very convenient. A bit less durable, but decently durable after dried (I had to sand off some that pooled gravity wise at the bottom of a part after a very thick coat and I gave up and used iso to weaken it).
Here they are next to each other. The V2 has the Kaleido on it. Ignore the shitty gold, that was me messing with Gundam markers and was like that before the coat.

Pretty much all of these are the same thing is slightly different forms. Your best bet is to look into something wearable that flips out of the way when you don't need them. I'm farsighted so when I build, I tend to look over the top of my glasses which isn't ideal as I'm basically looking cross-eyed at what I'm working on. I'm looking at a few options right now with swappable lenses that can be mixed and matched and can have individual sides flipped up to use one eye at a time. If you type "magnifying glasses" into Amazon there are a few examples that show up on the first page. I can't attest to how well they work yet.

Could be worse, they could have done a Nintendo and called it New GX Clear.
At least it seems like both colors and clear coats are going to be using the same naming system now. Also I believe it is using symmetrical Retarder thinner and Rapid Thinner vs leveling thinner.
I'm actually pretty excited to try it after seeing some videos of how well the white covers pigment wise. But USA Gundam Store is out of most of it and I haven't found it listed elsewhere. GSI has been really bad about stock the latter half of 2025.

No Hobby Lobbys or Michael's in New Mexico?
>>
>>23698705
We do have a hobby lobby but they are in the process of moving. Been forever since I've been there. They might have a couple models. Worth a shot but with the move in progress who knows. And we did just get a Michael's but someone implied they don't have shit for models. I need to take another lap in there.
>>
>>23698711
Neither of them are gonna impress you with offerings but I guess it's better than nothing if you really wanna go see kits on shelves.

My Michael's has had the same MG V ver ka in its model section for over a year, and no other gundams. Doesn't help you can get that kit cheaper absolutely anywhere else. My Hobby lobby has been fantastic the past few months, they finally started getting regular restocks of good kits.

Yeah, I'd take a picture for you, but I doubt I'll go back there till next september for halloween shit. They also actually put them on their website unlike Hobby Lobby.

>>
>>23698733
Interesting.

The Michaels closest to me doesn't have any models in stock, but it looks like the one the next town over has a decent selection. But 36 burgers for the HGAC Deathscythe seems a bit steep.

Speaking of Wingslop and US store availability, I managed to find all four of the exclusive HGAC midseason upgrade kits at my local Le Targét. Only checked the price of the Altron, but it came to about $24 a pop. You guys might want to check your locations in the coming weeks.
>>
>>23698741
My Michaels by my house wanted 37$ for a HG Revive red Zaku, their kit selections great but overpriced for hgs. Their MG Nu Ver.Ka was msrp at least, I just don't know if its worth buying off them vs Hobby Lobby
>>
>>23698743
Hobby Lobby is only worth it on their 40% off, which happens every month at least. Even with their price raises that still works out to being better than most US retailers.
>>
>>23698748
It's every other week. A lot of the time you can find stuff for significantly under MSRP during those sales. I just got a 12 dollar gquuuuuux and got a sazabi ver.ka for 65 dollars.
>>
>>23698748
It's actually like every other week (It is this week btw)

>>23698737
Mech9 says it's C71 + C42. At a 2:1 ratio which is pretty easy to eyeball.
>>
The best part about hobby lobby is ordering online from them, it's like a gundam gacha.
>>
Being on Mech9 had me notice some Wave VF kits that look neat. Where is Wave on the manufacturer tier list in annoyances. I have built chink kits.

>>
>>23699112
For me it'd be the Berga Dalas more than any other, but I'd love any of them
More reprints for the old F91 and V kits would be good too at least. I picked up a Javelin but I wouldn't mind getting all the Zanscare weirdos at this point.
I'm cool with mixed scale displays but it's still frustrating V was 1/144 when F91 was 1/100. If we could just get GM III, Jamesgun and Javelin in 1/100 we could have a whole samescale Jim lineup.

>>23699124
F91 has amazing designs, most of them only really get a few animation sequences though.

i don't understand storefags. this is something the reddit soys who want to experience the hustle and bustle of the city with exposed brick walls would say. you're just looking at a shelf full of overpriced boxes. you can get the same thing just by looking online.

>>23699138
I'm a few hours out of Albuquerque, so yeah. Albuquerque is a shithole and I really try to avoid going there if I can. Had a nice board game Cafe though if that's your thing. Empire Games, I think.

>>23699159
I don't have a problem browsing online or anything, it's just not my preferred way to shop. I'm not saying a brick and mortar store is better or anything. Plus, if it's a small business then I don't mind coughing up the extra couple bucks and try to support them. I just find browsing a store with a little more limited stock nice sometimes and I like board games and building because it's a tactical experience. I just like rolling the box around in my hands or moving pieces around a board or whatever. The only two reasons that I might say brick and mortar stores are better are incredibly minor. Limited stock is just easier to shop around and you get it right then and there without waiting for it to show up in the mail. Bonus points if it's a small business but sometimes that stock is just too limited. Doubly so on my little podunk town.

I watched a lot of cool japanese gunpla videos and now I want to start learning how to paint, but I have no time or energy to do it as a corporate slave.
I plan to retire early in 5 years, maybe if I still like gunpla by then...
>>
>>23699383
Just do it.
I've started painting recently as well. Experimenting with rattle cans and brush by hand, still trying to get a sense of how to control the spray and trying to get the right level of thickness/ thinness for the paint when brush painting. I try to set aside about 30 ish min a day so progress is slow but things are happening and I'm learning.
>>
>>23699259
The question wasn't "what Gunpla do you like?" it was "what Gunpla sells the best because it looks cool?"
>>
>>23699383
If you have the time and energy to build, you have the time and energy to paint, you just need to build less kits to have more time making the ones you have nice.
Besides, you'll find that most of the painting process is just waiting around, you can apply a single colour before bed every night and you'd still be going at a decent pace. The paint needs time to cure between colours anyways.
>>
>>23699427
personally this just isn't true for me
I love building, but I hate painting. I love gluing plastic, sanding, drilling, making joints and modifications, but I have no love or energy at all for painting. it's just not in any way interesting to me and is a complete chore standing between me and a final product. what I wouldn't give to never need to paint again.
>>
HG looks absolutely awful without touch up.
They're boring to assemble and boring to look at since they're so simple and plain.
There's no point in buying HG if you don't paint.
