-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Bandai could do this but will never.
Only got as far as the heads yesterday. The orange and white runners tested fine for Tamiya panel liner so I hit them all with it, but then got a massive headache. Not sure if it was the liner fumes, the plastic off gassing, or just something else. Also had a weird thing where some of the plastic started getting paint before I even got within a few mm of it and I didn't see hairs... Probably should have cleaned them.
The heads went together pretty nicely with only 1 set of parts that needed force so far.
The metallic stickers are awful though. Standard Bandai HG stickers are higher quality and I've been spoiled by the plastic surfaced ones on the PGU RX-78 and the G-Self having them all covered by clear plastic parts. The stickers are super thin, which makes them too flexible, they barely stick to anything including the sheet they came on, and they scratch super easily.

I agree (mostly), but that doesn't mean they can't be worse than Bandai's. I did complain when I posted about the G-Self.
The (mostly) is from the plastic coated stickers that I used on both the PGU and the MGEX Kshatriya. Both look pretty close to just parts on the suits due to both the clear plastic layer, and the designers slightly nesting them into spots in the parts they are put on.

Me neither but you don't actually need a lot of space. If you spray waterbased acrylics, you don't need to worry about fumes and P3 mask will take care of paint particles, which stays in the air only for couple of minutes anyway. Cardboard box will take care of overspray, too. Easy.

Anon, I can guarantee you that unless you pull the trigger all the way back with some 3+ bar pressure like some sort of retard, cardboard behind (or cardboard + wet baby wipes, since that's what some people use as makeshift particles trap) will be enough to catch whatever does not hit the model. Even that mask is overkill at that setup. H&S themselves advice to just keep window or door open and only use mask otherwise. Seriously, you are overthinking this. Good to care for your lungs but get real.
>>
>>23782626
I'm a different person telling you the dust is real and annoying. Get a cheap air filter machine and it'll work fine though. You just need to change the filter more often than you would if you weren't painting. The dust clogs the things up pretty fast.

The POM parts are all labeled on the runner as such, the rest of the runners don't say anything, but took enamel thinner fine. I'm assuming that means there are no ABS parts? Some of the plastics feel different though so I could be wrong.
The battery replacements are going to be kinda annoying, as the circuit boards kinda clip into place, a but spoiled by the Osiris's setup for easy changes (and also larger batteries, these are CR927s).

Both should have fixed the issue with the shitty knees, but retain the problems with the shitty torso twist and lack of sculpted head vulcans that were addressed in the Unicorn OVA kit.

Unicorn ver Ka bases on the novel design, it didn't have those forehead vulcans until the anime version becomes the standard looks several years later.

Honestly the joints of Kenbu kits are not very strong and some parts are quite half assed. Brady Hound/Aaron Rhino are better, but they could have had better designs.

Yeah I don't really know why people bitch about them. I posted that HG Harute picture yesterday and the wings, legs, and arms ate all polycaps attached but haven't drooped over the many years I've had the kit built.
Yeah they are worse with giant weapons, but that is an issue with a specific kits engineering and PS on PS joints don't always solve that.

Same, people talk about physical space but for me it's the whole ordeal about venting the fumes. I don't have a room where I can open a window that isn't also wallpapered, and it's only inevitable that overspray would eventually get on it and then it's a huge cost to fix when I move.
Not to mention that in an apartment even if you vent it outside there's going to be people above you that complain about the fumes reaching them even if they actually don't.

Recently snapped the BB Senshi GP03. The gimmick for slotting Stamen inside Orchis is very cool but the engineering is kinda bad because opening and closing the Orchis puts a lot of strain on like two super thin pegs holding the rotating parts together. It fucking broke after like 10-15 times of opening and closing it and now I glued it back with the Stamen stuck in there forever. A shame.

Seed designs are flashy, colorful, and cool-looking, which makes them very easy attractors. It pays Bandai's bills, which is why they keep making it. Similar for Aerial, it's easily the sexiest main Gundam since Exia and Unicorn so people buy it despite how absolutely trash the show was.

HG Barbatos Lupus Rex. Some painting done. Yellow parts done in 'metallic yellow', which is explicitly not gold, apparently. Energy pipes in red, pistons in silver. Flaming Snow decals.

What a floppy bastard he is, even if he turned out decent. Wary of even touching it with how loose the 'frame' is, much less posing. Good thing he's getting top coated soon, if only to firm up the joints, but I'm torn between matte and semi-gloss.

I've never seen SEED. I feel like I have already seen 0079 so what is the point. I really don't like any AUs I tried except for G, and I wish I did.

I started my Titans Mk II. I lost the left sticker so I had to make one out of extra sticker and an exacto knife. It looks like shit, but at least it isn't blank. I would go buy some paint, but buying some metallic green paint just for these little parts seems wasteful.

I might actually do this, and I would never object to spending money on a Qubeley lol.

Funnily enough I have one of these lying around and I thought this would be a good first time painting kit.

I am at the stage where I am not sure how seriously I want to take this hobby. I need something to preoccupy my time, but I don't have the budget for anything crazy like an airbrush kit and just want to experiment with acrylics, paint thinner, and drybrushing for now.

In bulk? Delpi Decal's website. Otherwise, Ali Express.

>in america
Yes, the answer is still the same. You're not going to find a brick and mortar store that stocks waterslides for anything but RC cars and planes, so your only choice is to order online. The US-based webstores will charge you markup plus shipping plus taxes, which is why you order from those two places instead. Bulk ordering from Delpi gives you free shipping, and Ali also has options for free shipping if you order from "Choice" vendors.
>>
>>23784355
Choice is a scam. They just bake the shipping cost into the price of the products to fool people into thinking they're getting a deal.

2 cuts from a nipper and a hobby knife is all you need. If you're not painting it, you can skip sanding the kit.
>>
>>23784483
I only sand normal gates as it's too easy to nick the plastic. Which looks bad if you are just clear coating, and involves needing to add putty if you are painting. Much simpler to just glass file (except on curves).
>>
>>23784481
>I forgot there are people who paint the whole inner frames of kits here.
Just to be clear, you mean sand, prime, airbrush paint, and then drybrush weathering the inner frame? Right? I would never just 'paint' the inner frame.

Why can't we have a RX-78-2 kit that looks this good?
RD gets all the good stuff
>>
>>23784669

>>
>>23784672
The MG 2.0 is very overrated and far from “perfect”
>>
>>23784674
what's wrong with it then?
>>
>>23784678
Not enough curvature, it looks too blocky and Katoki-like and doesn't capture the hand drawn quality of the original design like the RD does
Some questionable proportions
Legs and feet look terrible, the curves of the shins and feet and the ankle guard should form near unbroken lines for example and the MG completely fails there
Very obvious skirt armor gaps while the RD manages to have mostly solid diaper style skirts
Very obvious dark colored joints while the original design had basically no visible joints, a faithful RX-78-2 kit should disguise its joints as much as possible like the white joints on the RD or the best mecha collection revival kit
I could go on

It flows better and can be easy removed with their thinner. Same reson why so many people in miniatures/scale models tend to use oil based washes or make their own with oil paints and white spirit.
>>
>>23784709
The water based coat will protect the plastic and it's easy to clean up since the enamels solvent won't damage the acrylic base coat. It's about solvent incompatibility. If you use water based panel liner too you can damage the paint when you clean it up. Lighter fluid won't damage acrylic paint and the acrylic paint will make a barrier between the plastic and the enamel thinner which would damage it. They just play really nice together.

Okay, maybe someone here will have any idea because I'm completely out of them at this point. It's about problem of paint drying inside the airbrush - not at the tip, but inside the nozzle. Bizarre, I know. Tested various setups - Vallejo and AK waterbased acrylics, Tamiya alcohol acrylics (these basically cannot jam the airbrush - similar shit to lacquers, their thinner doubles as dissolver and this melt the paint, self cleaning itself and leaving leftovers to be blasted outside, even better with lacquer thinner that can be used instead), 1:1 and 1:2 ratios of dedicated thinner to paint, added flow improver, added retarder, tested pressure in range between 1.2 to 2.2 bar (roughly 17 to 32 PSI so typical range - wouldn't really get over that since at 2.2 it was blasting paint so fucking fast that it would drown everything even with slight trigger movement and overspray was clearly visible). Still the same - even after flushing with cleaner or IPA and water few times, there would be visible layer of paint formed around the needle exactly where nozzle is, which itself has dried paint inside as well.

First people I consulted the problem with blamed my Chinese (Polish/Chinese actually, FA-190X model) airbrush for that, okay, I started to believe this might really be the case - after all, air goes around the nozzle, it shouldn't go inside unless something is broken, misaligned, needle is not perfectly polished, etc, etc. Got huge tax return so why not I said and got H&S Evolution model. But problem was still present, for reasons now completely unknown to me. I'm out of ideas, honestly. If anyone can have slightest clue at what could be the reason behind that, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
>>
>>23785249
What's your cleaning routine?
>>
>>23785250
First empty the cup with water (in case of Tamiya acrylics test it was thinner instead), using that squeeze bottle and holding airbrush over some cup, until only pure water flows out. Then I would pour cleaner (or IPA) and flush into cleaning cup (you know, these with rubber hole and filter to prevent particles from flowing everywhere during cleaning), moving trigger back and forth. Then I would check if there is still paint visible inside airbrush cup - if so, add cleaner again, repeat, do bubble back cleaning with cleaner (blocking air from the front, pushing the trigger), then add water and flush at full force, repeat. Only then I would, at the end of session/test, take needle out (from the front), clean it and nozzle with IPA, put together again, flush with water, finish.

>1:1 and 1:2 ratios of dedicated thinner to paint
You should be reversing that. More thinner than paint, unless you misspoke there.
>>
>>23785283
Thats how I would clean it after taking apart, I know that some people use dedicated needles for that but Im afraid I would easily damage it that way so I prefer brush instead.

>>23785290
Yeah, sorry, 1:2 of paint to thinner. Or thinner + flow improver solution (80% thinner, 20% flow improver since on bottle there is a warning not to add more than 2 drops per 10 of paint).
>>
>>23785294
It also helps to spray some pure IPA through it to clean the nozzle itself.

They're both borderline unfuckupable unless you're using that tamiya flowing panel liner on bare plastic parts that are already assembled. You can erase your mistakes, and you can keep messing with a waterslide decal for as long as it's wet.

You'll never get good unless you practice. Fucking up is inevitable and comes with the territory, you just have to live with it and learn from your mistakes.

I can't into ratio and mixing so I just dump all the paint in its original container into a separate plastic container and then fill the old container with thinner twice to make it around 1:2 ratio.
the plastic container looks really bad though after being left alone for a while since the thinner and paint got separated again and I have to reshake shake shake shake again. How long can it last without ruining the paint anyway?

The pour-type markers (that will get between parts and leave cracks permanently stained in ink if you panel-line without re-taking it apart, do NOT be lazy and just panel-line a fully-assembled thing) fill holes comfily, you can just wipe the excess with alcohol. Take the head crest for example, you just smudge the marker over the middle bit and then wipe the surface with a rubbing alcohol-soaked thumb or a q-tip, then all that remains is the ink that snugly went inside the hole. Same thing with the mouth and etc.
t. only panel-lines with marker and that's about it

Also went and built the stand. It has a cool ratchet mechanism for controlling the length that is a fun gimmick. I think it is reused from their last kit as it had two unused parts.
Also the stand runners were labeled with ABS, which I think means all the unlabeled runners are PS/plated PS.

Going back and diagnosing my first ever RG that I fucked up. I used too much tamiya linger and cracked small circular joints in the wing petals of an RG Wing TV. I've let it sit around for close to a year because it bummed me out.
If I joined the joints back together with Mr. Cement S, would it create a strong enough new plastic bond where even small, thin joints would survive movement? Or do I just need to try and source replacement parts?
>>
>>23785754
if you disassemble everything and cement it back together it should be as strong or stronger than new, you'll probably need to sand stuff down to get it to fit perfectly again if the actual pegs and holes are what cracked, though.
>>
>>23785681
It has one peg hole for the Striker Packs, so you need an adapter or mods if you want to use double peg backpacks.

These are the pieces that had damage. It was the top loops on the red parts, and the outer top loops on the white parts. I fully broke off the loops that had damage, brushed the broken ends with Mr. Cement S, and then squeezed them back on until a little bit of plastic seeped out the sides. I'll let it cure for a day or so and reassemble, hoping the bond is strong enough for movement. But those are REALLY thin loops.
I definitely don't want to just cement all the 'feathers' together. The selling point of this RG is how the wing binders spread open in a cool, admittedly non-canon way.

>>
>>23785767
uhh do you mean you still have the broken off loops of plastic? Because the way plastic cement works, it'll be just as strong if not stronger than it was out of the box, but it will probably be pretty hard to get it all back lined up perfectly. If you're just going to plastic cement stuff and then stick it together then there won't be any movement, it's not glue, it's a solvent that's melting the plastic and fusing it together.
>>

I circled the areas that were broke. The picture I posted was post cementing. Essentially, the loops were cracked and barely hanging on, so I fully removed the broken loops, brushed the ends with Cement S, and smushed them back in place.
Hopefully, I did it well enough that the bond is strong enough to hold during movement.
>>
>>23785781
Oh you already did it and they're supposed to be like that. I'm not familiar with the RG wing, I thought all the broken loops might have had raised pieces like the inner ones on the white wing parts. The strength of the bond should be fine and not what you need to worry about, it's the fit that might not be right. Stuff might need to be sanded down, or it could be too loose and need to be beefed up. I always use an old bottle of my sister's nail polish when joints are loose.

I remember you messed up the camera sticker (which isn't visually evident, I only remember you posted about it), and I also really do love the Mk-II, so you got lucky. I want to see you and the Mk-II do well, even though I now like the AEUG version a lot more.
I personally use my fingers to wipe, for better control, but you'll end up with really dirty looking fingers. Also, panel-liner really really loves getting into nub marks, so consider wiping far away from nub marks, or just doing all of it before you cut the nubs off. Glass files are apparently magic at sanding away nubs (whereas I just use the nipper to cut one last time, then use my fingernails to sand) but I don't know if that would fix the problem. On the other hand, nub marks on black plastic can just be filled up with black panel-liner and get rid of the dark grey bits.
>>23785534
I see, that's so cool!
>>
>>23785503
>>23786082
Also I never bothered, but there's different colours that work better for panel-lining different colours, something about either popping out more or blending in more? I just use black...
>grey being fine for lighter colours
>black for darker
>brown on red for reasons I can't remember
A bit of a moot point as the Mk-II is pretty dark anyway. Also, panel-liner melts or can melt ABS plastic, the manual and/or runner should tell you if it's ABS plastic or not. I did so anyway and very carefully on the HGUC Balls and bootleg kits (made entirely out of ABS plastic) and it might just be a "needs space and time to evaporate" issue, but others said that it straight-up turns ABS brittle.
