Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

Dusty bin is easily my favorite. I will make sure she gets all the garbage to throw away.

Anyway, I've been all over the place in terms of desire to draw mares / putting in the effort. Mare Fair PCD hit me good. Biggest point of complication for me is currently the face. Eyes seem so simple to draw, but I still find myself either taking forever on them or just making them look plain bad, if not both. I want to improve on this, but I'm still prioritizing working on general anatomy for now. For funsies and also to learn how to draw clothes and -eyeshadow- of all things, I decided to give Octane Red a mom. I hope she is a M (Y) would L to F, and that the drawings are acceptable. any criticism is appreciated.

I think a great exercise in OC design and drawing in general would be to continue this family of Stellantis mares, one for every car on the LX platform. That would mean a modern Charger, and a magnum, but If we count the individual facelifts, that balloons to like, 5 mares. I dunno. We'll see.

yea pretty much, everyone gets a unique secret santa name for the event. I just made a post that said I'd draw a pony for their name. Some people responded with a design in mind, others just had me freestyle it
>>41603564
brooo that mare is so cute. Love the one with her laying on top of the car. Great outfit too I really like the hoop earing. If you're looking for critique I'll give my opinion. When it comes to the eyes, I feel like you could make the iris/pupil smaller or more rounded. Looking at the left drawing specifically, if her face was see through and you could see her whole pupil, I feel like they would be nearly touching if you followed the curve you currently have. I think they should ideally always have some space between them and be mostly contained within the whites of the eye. Hope that makes sense. Other than that the only thing that sticks out to me with the sitting one is that her body should fan out a bit more as you get closer to her bottom. It's mostly hidden by her legs but the way it is now it looks like here body actually gets thinner as it gets closer to her back legs, I think it should be the opposite. Curious what program you are using to draw. I think you could really benefit from some adjustments to your line size as well, making the lines get thinner as they end in certain spots. Kinda like the way you did her eyelashes but with her legs, chin, etc.
>>41603901

Don't know how well proficiency with the basic pencil tool in Paint would qualify me as a pixel artist, but here's my two cents:
For me, it was working within my limitations. When I started doing digital art, I didn't have a tablet or a proper drawing program, so I did everything on my laptop's touchpad while using Paint. There's a lot of overlap between pixel and regular art in terms of achieving a certain look, there are just different methods you have to learn for the respective mediums.

If you've already been drawing, I'd recommend trying to limit your tools while applying what drawing knowledge you have so that you can experiment with different methodology. Like this anon, >>41604719, I'll shill Paint because it's the easiest program for me to get the pixel look without worrying about a lot of the frills of a proper drawing program. That said, I know several of them offer particular brushes that achieve the same effect.

Thirded for Paint. like idk about win10+ version but the one on win7 isn't that bad however since >>41604786
mentioned, yes it gets the job done right for that job, personally I can't really do anything pixel using photoshop, you can but it's going to be a pain disabling all possible antialias and it's like using a howitzer to kill a fly.
yes it's good to incorporate 2D elements like I did on >>41604786

for that job you first need a base, to get all items and characters more or less on the same proportions. here, have a grid. save it. it is hard to find a decent base for isometric since adobe crap and co does not have any that is actually designed for that.

>>41604786
nah i'm not the op, but hey if i can help on this i'd be glad to.

(really, get a mouse, I know you have one, even an old one, if you need a good program like Photoshop I can get you that too, and a clean one, not the malware crap )
ok i should also repack my version of mspaint.exe with all the stuff with several undo levels.

>>41604044
if you want, here, i started a thing, of course you can make plain 2d pixel stuff but myself i should make more isometric art cause it's fun. here's a 5 minute demo with ponka who will be our victim in a pseudo-3d universe, and some shapes just to make a demo on how to imagine the shadow projection being like, assuming it's from the very top.
then you can also set your image definition by doubling the grid, i usually make things huge, so i can add plenty of details.

Photoshop however will be useful if you want gradients done right - you can select an area, and convert the "sprite" you want down to 8 or 16 colors with more or less dithering which you can enjoy arranging your characters/gradients/items/sprites how you want, zooming in at 6 or 8x.
>>
>>41605595
sure! i'm going to make some demos here but i think i will rather scale her to like 50%

oh also one interesting thing i'd recommand : think of a neutral place in the image you will compose that's on a neutral, unused background color, think of it like a green screen like every hollywood slop loves to use. it works the same, want something bg, paint it 100% green and then you can paste your pon anywhere.

yes sprites in vidya just works like this for the past half century.

ah one important thing but i know there are complete noobs out there. never save pixel art as jpeg. it is impure.
>>
>>41605605
Oh, it's no worry, I've had a tablet and a drawing program for a few years by now. The funny thing is though that I started going back to touchpad Paint drawing a lot like two years ago and I've gotten fairly adept at it. I almost prefer it over tablet drawing (and I've tried mouse drawing and it doesn't feel as natural to me as touchpad). I've likened it to digital finger painting in a way, if obviously lacking in a fair amount of ways. But for a good way to blow off steam and draw without a lot of worry, it's my go-to method. I do appreciate the offer though.

ah ok, well i respect people like you.

myself i like to draw using the mouse, mostly for vectors and pixels, used to have a vx nano, mx master and rn i'm going with the PerfomanceMX and i agree it works better on some design/stuff/style, to each tool its.. oh well.
going to finish the ponka.
>>41605605
cause yeah the proportions are not here, head should be bigger and after a cleanup of the construction lines ( to evaluate space ) i should have planned that otherwise. blah
i will try making her look more like this random donkey mare

ok guess it's finished. last step was blending. find pixels, make a tone darker and darker as you get closer to the line art's pixels, that will make it smoother, and we want our ponkas with a smooth plot, right?

libresprite is the same but free since the base of aseprite was planned to be free open source stuff. i mean yes it's for having fun, but please gentlemen, it's not about money, it reminds me of the guys saying AI is cheap when they pay a monthly fee on ai generators or a grand on a gpu to generate 1024x1024 crap they can't legally exploit.

giving learning to draw ponies another chance is really fun. i used to get do autisticly mad at myself for not being able to draw anything especially ponies no matter how much i tried but I've started drawing the lines and joints and studying up with various bale resources and mares.horse and am now using my plushies and stuff as reference as well as am recreating pictures of cats in various poses as ponies to help sharpen my sense of pony anatomy. Im slowly but definitely improving. I'll retreat back into the blogfag cave i crawled out from now but thanks

I've uploaded art to derpi twice now and they site mods don't approve unless I ask them to in their site feedback forum. First time I waited three hours, last one was yesterday after 40 minutes. Yesterday's art immediately got downvoted by 23 people (I'm assuming by the staff) and had two negative comments. Anyone else having problems with derpi staff?
>>
>>41617623
What could you have possibly uploaded to warrant 20 something downvotes? I could maybe see it if it was something political in nature because they're pretty anal about anything with a politics tag attached to it even if its an innocent meme, but besides that and abuse I can't think of anything that'd get that immediate reaction. You didn't take Twiggles out back and give her the Ol' Yeller treatment, right Anon?
As for the approval thing. From my own experience I think that's just how it is until you're considered an 'alright' uploader. Your art will sit in quarantine until someone decides to glance at it, make sure it's not breaking da rulez, and then throw it haphazardly to the masses. Some days were quicker than others but it usually to an annoying amount of time. Once you've uploaded enough though, it seems like you wind up only having to wait a couple minutes at best since then you're just entering what I assume is a queue.
>>
>>41617695
just that catbox image
>>41616286
But again, I'm pretty sure it was the staff being petty for me asking them to approve it for upload.
>>
it actually has 32 downvotes in less than a day bro
https://derpibooru.org/images/3480056
>>
>>41617757
Ah, well that narrowed down the search a bit.
I'm not going to sit here and defend >derpi staff of all people, but I doubt it's a pettiness problem on their part and moreso just the people who are browsing around for new lewds not taking kindly to what they'd consider 'low effort/quality' fap material. You'll see that a lot with anything that looks like its made in mspaint or by a new artist. Doesn't even need to be explicit for it to happen, either.
>>
>>41617814
If you upload as someone without account the mods takes you as a potential spasmer (thanks focking cbat spamer) that's why they are agresive with the uploads from unregister anonymous.
I've see downvotes in twibooru too, sometimes it is cruel to expose your art at the discretion of others.
>>
>>41617860
I'm just confused what's so uniquely offensive about my quick shading practice for art? I've uploaded actual ragebait with less activity in a day.

If you want the real answer here it's that you're making a lot of technical mistakes in this picture in particular and those are particularly frowned upon when people are browsing for porn, like >>41617818 said.

If you're looking for some more specific critique, though, these are some of the problems with that picture in particular:
>anatomy and perspective are obviously off at a glance
>mane, face, and neck all form a bad tangent on the left side
>shading is done in pure black with an airbrush (common beginner's trap that makes the colors look muddy)
>shading lacks contrast and clear sense of a light source
>expression comes across as less sexy and more creepy than you most likely intended
>>
>>41617814
I have the feeling that bad art gets some down votes and gets ignored but explicit bad art gets a worse reception by the general consensus.

Yeah, I agree with all those points, especially the black shading. I really wanted to get this out before the terri
thread died. but I was too late, probably should have drew more than while waiting in tarkov queues. plus I thought the pose was pretty cool and wanted to get it down while it was fresh on my mind. I'm new to drawing ponies digitally and sexually as well, I'm (was, rip) more experienced with drawing traditionally in just monochrome. All of that to say, I do be trying.
>>41621286
idk, all I really see that gets the down votes I got is fluffy abuse. So I just think my art was bombed by staff because this is the second time I've asked them to approve my art after waiting for 40 minutes, when I'm trying to get feedback while I have the freetime at the moment.

I recommend you experiment with editing your photo (from your phone or on a pc) you would be surprised how well it improves by adjusting the brightness and sharpness. It's also a good idea to have a space with light so that you won't be surprised by a shadow or light of a different shade.

imo anatomy her body is really thick compared to her head. show inspired bodies are typically thinner than the head but i don't know what you are aiming for in terms of proportions. your value selections are pretty good imo and i really like the composition of this pic too. the shading is a bit light btw there should be a bit more contrast between her coat and the obscured parts. did you use charcoal for this? as far as i can see based on the texture it seems like you did, i appreciate that. charcoal is hard to do on trad work because it loves to smear and dulls fast.
>>
>>41626086
You could probably add a few stars with chalk or paint, but I would maybe test it on some scrap paper first to see how the mediums mix.
>>
>>41626111
yes it was charcoal; it's one of my favorite medium because I'm a lazy fuck, and charcoal is so quick to draw with.
Her being a fat fuck because she's a hayburger addict and also because I like chubby mares. I shaded her face a little more, but I'm not really sure which obscure part you're referring to.

Yes and no. Thing is I've gotten into the habit of drawing everyday and usually it's for several hours per day so I get very little time for things like games and such. Hey, anon's draw friend, here I need input on a project. I’m trying to turn all my friends into ponies, as I’m the resident pony enthusiast of our group. I’ve already collected all their preferred colors, but I ran into an issue in the show. I see that ponies outlines are usually a darker shade of their coat color, so I tried doing that, but one of my friends wanted a crimson red for the coat, so I tried doing an even darker red outline, and it looked bad, hurt my eyes, and I didn’t like it. I see most anons outline things in black, so I wanted to know if that's typically cool to do even though it’s not show accurate. What’s the consensus?

Holy cow that's cute as hell anon. It's a weird coincidence too because I was just about to upload my own video but mine is much crappier. I wasn't planning to ever show it in a super short and rough draft, but it's been like two months since I've touched it and like a month since I've even remembered it. The problem is that I'm intimidated by the higher complexity of following scenes, but I think I'll try to pick it back up someday when I feel ready.

Thing is the coloured outlines work because of the environment the characters palettes are in. I use black outlines because with colored you need a very pastel looking backdrop so the outlines are visually distinct.

All that is to say that you can use black outlines if you want but using the show-accurate outline try and see if you can't make a background where it meshes good.

Posting here as well, there is currently a "Day of Princess Celestia" art pack going on at NHNB if anyone is interested in participating. It will be a free art pack, done just for fun. Both drawings and stories are accepted. Previous art packs even had some video submissions. Even if you just have some ideas for content, feel free to post them in the thread for potential inspiration to others.

If you want to check it out, you can find the thread below:

you did your best, I'm assuming you didn't use a reference? you got the head down quite well, I would suggest at the minimum finding screenshots from the show preferable early to mid show ear screenshots and breaking them down into basic shapes to get a better feel for anatomy. you can do it like how i did it in this bread down where you use circles for the head barrel/torso and the but and for the legs lines that roughly follow where the bones would roughly lay. Ideally studying both the show and actual horse anatomy would be best, but you can get by with studying show screens if you want to just draw show like ponies. generally speaking the hooves tend to be about half the thickness of the barrel/torso and for the front legs they tend to be close together. i would also recommend playing with varying line thickness and pressure to get a more refined look. take notice how in mine the lines taper and use different thicknesses in different areas. hope i helped somewhat but do keep going brother!

Your answer is not in the program you use, but rather in your painting skills.

Well I use clip studio paint and I find that program nice to navigate in, but that's because I stuck with it long enough to learn it and same goes with digital art in general. Tons of good art has been made in every program so the weight is more on "Do I like this program to draw in?"

(You) just gotta pick one and work on your technical skills same as any medium really.
>>
>>41652220
photoshop CS versions are the best, but Krita's still the GOAT.

CSP would be better if it could be cracked without ads. don't encourage this and pirate if you can.
>>
>>41652220
If you're asking the question then you are not skilled enough to actually need it. That said, Krita is in fact deficient in two regards: first, it cannot parse clipping layers, and second, its text tool is horrible.

put the most emo music on and draw for three hours straight. start drawing shapes until an idea comes to mind on what the shape can be molded into as a greater piece if art. Keep drawing random shapes, starting over and over, until that frustration fuses with your thoughts on what to make of the shapes, which in essence results in what is called inspiration.

i would suggest analyzing artworks that you like and try to pinpoint the brush style so you can replicate it. for example, i really love artists that use soft and texturized brushes, so ive been trying it out for myself and i really enjoy it

For sketching I'd recommend something based on a pencil or charcoal texture whereas for linework I'd just recommend something based on an ink pen if you want anything more than just a default circle brush

Is there a good way to pose ponies more naturally without referencing others? I want to make their poses and expressions less stiff and more fluid/natural looking
>>
>>41659718
looks fine to me but good god that's a fucking feel. some of my most well received art is usually art I think came out like shit, where as the shit I really like doesn't hit at all. It's all mental and there will always be pieces you will like more than others bet it from the content or technical execution of the image. it also has to do a bit with your growing abilities concerning analyzing your own work as well. when ever i go back to my older works i notice flaws that i literally didn't see at the time of creation. keep that in mind and don't let it slow you down at all, you will always manage to find flaws regardless but as you grow you will get better at spotting them and correcting them before finalizing your image.
>>41659719
not bad for a first time, how the legs bend depends on if you are aiming for realistic horse range of motion or if you are going for more show like cartoony anatomy. for the latter study show screens to get a feel for the anatomy, for the former study irl horse anatomy.
>>41659771
there really isn't much of a reason to not reference other artists work especially since you can just break down a piece you like into basic construction and shapes and go from there. but maybe gesture drawing could be a useful tool for you if you are really dedicated to not using references and getting more natural expressions and faces.

>without referencing
No. You learn to draw BY referencing, as close to the origin in case of ponies that's real-life horses and cats as possible. Anyone saying that you shoudn't reference is trying to sabotage you so you don't compete, or are as miserable as them.
That said, you learn making stuff less stiff by doing gesture drawing of dynamic poses, i.e. limiting yourself to 30 or 60 seconds per sketch so that you're forced to grasp the very essence of the pose. Also, read up on the line of action, and general textbooks/guides for old-school cartoon and especially comic drawing.

What do you mean parsing clipping layers? If its about clipping masks, in Krita they're called transparency masks, there's also layer transparency locking and alpha inheritance (inherits transparency of the layer below it). I do agree about the text tool (even if it doesn't bother me as much, as it get the job done), luckily the upcoming version 5.3 replaces it with an in-canvas text editor, you can try it out in the krita next nightly builds.

"parse clipping layers" can mean different things here:

> do "clipping masks" at all
Krita has had this for a long time but they designed the feature differently for cleaner handling of complexity. For example, clipping to multiple sources (see pic).

> do clipping masks the way I'm used to in Photoshop, because i'm used to it
It's important to note that Krita isn't trying to be Photoshop. Developers understand the benefits of following certain conventions, but they're not blindly going to copy a feature from Photoshop (especially not if they think Photoshop's way of doing it is flawed).

> import clipping masks correctly from .psd files
This is something that has come up many times, and it poses certain challenges. Krita doesn't do clipping the same way Photoshop does so they either have to start manipulating the layer stack in the .psd file to suit Krita (bad idea) or they have to add an extra way of doing clipping to cater to users that would rather use Photoshop (also a bad idea).

On top of that developer time is a scarce resource and they have bigger priorities than catering to people that would rather use Photoshop. That being said, volunteers have attempted adding support for Photoshop clipping masks and there's a slim chance you might see this added in some version of 5.3 but don't get your hopes up. If you like Photoshop, use Photoshop. If you wanna use Krita, get used to doing things slightly differently and to work with .kra files instead of .psd.

>If you like Photoshop, use Photoshop.
It's not about "rather using Photoshop".
It's about compatibility with a FILE FORMAT (that Adobe created, but still) that all other graphics programs are compatible with. In other words, ability to use more than one art program if one is lacking features or configuration, or collaborate between artists who use different programs.
Refusal to handle clipping layers the way they're saved in psd means Krita cannot correctly save psds made in any program that DOES handle clipping layers (Photoshop, Paint Tool SAI, Clip Studio Paint, FireAlpaca, others), it loses data.
>If you wanna use Krita, get used to doing things slightly differently and to work with .kra files instead of .psd.
Trying to tool-lock people into using just one program, with a custom file format, for everything, isn't a good - or nice - idea.

So basically, Krita developers are sabotaging themselves with FOSS-ego, and anyone who wants to draw seriously is better off pirating or buying CSP. Which incidentally can do clipping groups too.

.psd is a proprietary project file format by Adobe for Photoshop that open-source softwares more or less have to reverse-engineer. It's not meant to be a universal exchange format. But because software like Krita and CSP popped up after Photoshop became the go-to they've had to attempt and support it to try and win new users. But .psd doesn't support all the features of non-Photoshop apps so if people stay dependent on it they're going to run into issues eventually anyway.

Attempts have been made to design a universal file format, like Open Raster Archive (.ora which Krita's .kra project file format is based on), but again, it's not easy when different software have different offerings (like unique layer types or how to store animation frames).

If you wanna complain about software-ego and tool-locking, how about you ask Adobe to support .kra and .csp and see what kind of response you get? Or how about opening up the PSD format to let developer help try and shape it into a true exchange format? My best guest is that you'll receive a canned answer out of a customer support binder about how your feedback has been forwarded to the developers.

There are so many clean art projects but i really like chicken scratch, dirty unsmooth lines, traditional art and bale art. it is not only visually unique looking and less computerized looking but adds a feeling of soul. call me fucking autistic but i love to admire these art pieces and traditional art and sketches. it feels like each line and part had intent. but i come to understand these are considered amateur and not good?

You like chickenscratch for two reasons:
>it lets the viewer's brain interpret the image more favorably
>it creates visually interesting texture
Smooth, clean lines are professional specifically because with them, the ARTIST has to put in the effort to make it look good (i.e. they're harder), rather than rely on mind-tricks.

Used to draw ponies as a kid, I was 7 when I started, and by the point I was 12, some of my pieces were, hm, I'd say impressive for my age. Sketches are in my hometown, I'll try to take pics of some and post it here some time.
Anyhow, things went south and now I only occasionally draw on a drawing tablet that I received back in 2015 when I gave up on drawing in the first place. Drawing ponies is still in my blood. All of my shitty sketches and other stuff is based around G4 artstyle, it had immense impact on me.

Anyhow, never give up anons, I did and all I'm left with are bitter-sweet memories.

Keep the good work up! Loving all of your sketches and arts!

With Black Friday coming up, I'm reminded once more of my lack of a proper drawing tablet. All I have is a screenless Huion with busted pressure sensitivity, and considering a replacement pen costs almost as much as the entire package, I think it might be time for an upgrade.
After my experience with this borderline ewaste, I'm wary of dropping a bunch of cash on a Chinese brand. Is the Wacom tax still worth paying, or are there other worthy manufacturers these days?

I looked at Wacom's offerings, but the Intuos Pro doesn't have any amazing features to justify the price, and the standard Intuos models still use Micro-USB for some goddamn reason.

biggest offense is the chicken scratching you need to get more comfortable drawing longer straights, curves and circles with single strokes of the pencil. exercises for confident lines/strokes would be useful here. it's also useful to make sure that you're not drawing too small.

You're gonna fuck it up at first, and that's okay. Nobody starts as a master, mistakes are how we learn, fail faster, etc. etc. There are countless of wisdoms about how you shouldn't be afraid of failure.

Remember that no one is forcing you to show off your practice pieces. Draw with a mindset that the art is going to be burned once you're done (or even just erase them, they're only practice pieces (side note: peers will eventually have to see some of your art to give you helpful feedback).
Second, unless you draw some offensive fetishy or political shit, the worst that'll happen if you post bad art is that it will be ignored.
Finally, bad art is better than boring art. Think of someone like Weaver. From a technical perspective they're pretty sloppy, but because their stuff is creative, funny, and they tell enjoyable stories, the art is still beloved by horsefuckers.

cant say for certain what will work for you but for me I did best with jumping in learning as I went while copying the show. best advice I can give is fuck around and find out, it helps a lot if you know how you learn best. By that I mean knowing how much of a visual, hands on, and verbal learner you are, you might find you do best with verbal and written instruction vs visual and hands on or vice versa. It also depends a lot on your goals too, if you're aiming to draw like a specific artist then studying their work and copying them is gonna get you those results.

for creating a habit it depends entirely on your motivations for drawing in the first place and whether or not you already know what best works for you. for me I had a ton of ideas and motivation when starting out but I also knew if I wasn't consistent I would loose said motivation so I did daily draws for the entirety of my first year. this is going to be something you will have to experiment with to find what best suits you.

For time management it's down to what ever amount of time you have and are also willing to put into it, mold it to your desires and schedule. drawing isn't much different from any other skill based hobby in that what you get in gains is directly proportional to the time you put into it.
>>Always forget how long I'm supposed to make something lel
It's dependent on the outcome you're aiming for and how much time you're willing to put into a draw, it's not a zero sum game of "I put more hours into draw therefore is good" vs " I put less hours into draw therefore bad". skill and work flow also plays a role in that it reduces the time it takes to get said result naturally.

DrawaBox gets memed on a lot but they're the only resource I've found that has a guideline for how much time you should spend studying. I suppose they have something resembling empirical evidence to support it too.

They call it "the 50/50 rule" and it's exactly what you think it is. For every given amount of time spent studying you should spend an equal amount drawing as play.

Studying includes (but isn't limited to) reading/watching tutorials, doing exercises, photo/master studies, etc. Anything that's purely for the sake of learning.

"Play" refers to drawing for the hell of it; freestyle with minimal reference, experiment and make mistakes, fuck around and find out, just have fun drawing what you feel like drawing and express yourself. Take comfort in knowing that no one is forcing you to display your art if you don't want to.
