Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

I like to think of the top of the snoot as having the same slightly recessed bowl shape as the bottom of a mug albeit more ovular, and the outer contour of the snoot as forming a larger circle with the mane around the circle of the head
I'm not sure if that's technically correct or even makes sense but it helps me visualize the basic silhouette of snoot as it relates to mare

After years of posting on social media, I never developed a following. This is why I stopped lurking here and started posting.
>>
>>42767358

Well that's how I'd normally draw it, except the pixels look kind of big compared to the mouth and I was thinking 1 or 2 pixels might be better. I can't NOT think of it as pixels, that literally my medium between me and my vision, it's just a part of the process. That's like telling a painter don't think about the water on the brush or the amount of paint. It is possible to get into a zen state where that doesn't matter but I don't think it's going to work for me right now when I'm rusty.
>>
>>42768105
developing a following is mostly just luck anyway, the average person is a retard who stumbles on your lowest quality work, celebrates it, and moves on while the stuff you actually care about is dismissed. in essence, searching for a following is futile, just draw.
>>
>>42768105
Well, at least make an artist tag on a booru so I can stalk it for more wigglypaint. I love wigglypaint. I love seeing what people do with the limited tools and palette of 5 colors + white

I know a trick some pony artists shared. You have to consistently pump out your art in the same recognizable artstyle. It just can be premade, but you have to post a lot in a short time, so people will always have your art in their mind.

Oh man, I feel like I have the opposite problem. I'm a white void artist kek. Good thing to remember is that mares are made up of circles (usually one for the head, chest, and butt). Also, don't be afraid to make those legs and hooves wider. I actually don't really draw ponies from this angle so I struggled a bit with this example but maybe it'll help
>>
File: file.png (120 KB, 1509x545)

>>42772100
General advice for adding figures to landscape is to consider the camera height relative to the figure height for story purposes. Pic related are some simple examples of how "tall" the cameraman is and what that can do. We reckon our POV relative to other visible viable POV's (like the mares)

Assume all the pink pegs are the same IRL size and that the landscape is always the same composition.

I wasn’t going to even post this but your post made me think about it. I looked back to early attempts to even draw a hoof and compared it to this. I hadn’t felt like I have improved much and in truth I haven’t, but I can say with certainty that it was better than my first attempt. You are never going to get there if you don’t pick up the pencil. I promise it can be no worse than the little mutants I made when I started. Half the time they still look like my little fuck ups

looking really good! I don't think you're as far off as you might feel
for practice with anatomy (specifically proportions), I'd highly recommend the exercise in pic related, it really helped me feel confident in drawing ponies
>and then used him as an opportunity to practice some shading too, and complete something in my goddamn life for once.
that's good! keep on doing that, sometimes it's easy for us to get fixated on the first few steps and we hardly touch the last few. Even though you might not be 100% satisfied with something you're working on, it can be really good and helpful practice to just keep pushing onward and getting something to "finished"
and who knows, you might discover that it's not as bad in the end as you feared it would be

too real, most of it is keeping your shapes in line and choosing a good value range in your colour palette which can be tricky. But when you get going it's pretty fast. Did picrel in just under 30-40 mins some time ago.

Thanks for the support anons, looking back at it after a nights sleep and a full work day makes me not hate it anymore, I actually kinda like it, probably the best hair I've ever done. I got really second-guess-y after staring at it for 3-4 hours and I wasn't having a good day in the first place.

Still can't help feeling like my pones look a little stiff and lifeless though, which brings us to this >>42786614 anon's advice. I feel like a more "gestural" approach is kinda what I need to incorporate into my drawing. I do tend to autism too quickly on the details in the sketch phase, zoom the fuck in, and ultimately forget about the bigger picture. So I did some timed exercises, it was actually kinda fun, as terrifying as it felt going in. Never did one of them before but I'll certainly do it more.

NTA but I think you have to have shoulders there if the leg is moved just due to the movement of the joint creating a fold between the neck and leg, and the muscles contracting to pull the leg up.
you can ditch the shoulder but then if you want to see the form of the joint you have to invent the ridge elsewhere

I think I'm just gonna learn how to draw in general before drawing ponies or anything. drawing ponies (high quality) is like expecting a noobie to play something like fantaisie impromptu on the piano i guess

>>42792929
its a confluence of factors with head size being one of the problems. you have some idea about what you should be doing but you need some guidance and pointers for sure. the problem is your heads are too small, your butt circle is too big in relation to the head circle, and the chest is the same size as the butt circle. your necks are also too short, the legs are too long to usually the legs will roughly be about the length of the head. Your biggest circle should always be the head, the second biggest the butt circle, then the smallest the chest. that order will always naturally give you proper body proportions and will give the body the bean shape characteristic of the G4 style, stuff like neck or leg length is fairly flexible and open to your discretion mostly. Ideally if you could stack the circles you use to make you body on top of each other largest to smallest it should look something like the circles on the right. my neck is a bit on the thin and long in this but this is a rough purely functional draw for the purpose of demonstration rather than a hard and fast gospel piece.

NTA but honestly in my opinion the thing that throws you ponies off the most is the eyes, everything else is fine. I edited your shit with different eye shapes, I did my best to blend them in the best i could, and it made a pretty drastic difference. made some other minor edits, the colt ear was very much too small. remember that eyes are the gate way to the soul and are one of the first things people look at besides the face.

>>42797119
only major thing I changed was shape and size of the eye. I completely redrew the colts eye closest to the viewer so if the pupil is off that's why lol, the others no. the og shape was more like a lemon shape mine are more circular, red lines on the left were traced directly off your eyes. having a bit of space being open at the bottom is a more show accurate look, and it also looks less amateurish. you can make the lashes as thick or thin as you want that's more or less personal preference and up to your discretion.

I really love the scrappy feel of animation made by outsider artists on YouTube, it feels like a new genaration of animated content. I want to create a series that continues from the first season of FiM, but told from an outsider’s perspective. In it, Princess Luna chooses Derpy as her new apprentice to compete with the Mane Six, and each episode ends with Derpy delivering her own twisted moral. She would essentially be a childlike, innocent version of Xavier: Renegade Angel.
>>
>>42799333
I really really like this idea and I think your style is weird and unique enough to stand out but not hard to look at at the same time
are you drawing all the squigly lines yourself or did you find a way to automate it? I'd imagine having to redraw every static frame a couple of times becoming a pain in the ass in the future

I draw everything by hand. I use Clip Studio Paint for the animation, and for dialogue I draw three mouth-position cels: two closed mouths and one open mouth, animated on fours (8 fps). It’s an enjoyable process, but it’s time-consuming. I need to automate the boiling-line effect if I want to get closer to Tamer’s production speed. The problem is that the only software I know that can do that is Blender, which I find very difficult to use since I’ve only worked with 2d raster graphics.

I want to improve but I don't know what I should be studying to improve my skills/art overall. I know I should practice and study the fundamentals but doing so alone is what I've tried before, are there any courses or groups any of you can recommend to improve? feels like I can't get better in a vacuum and I'd benefit way more from a curriculum or just some kind of structure over doing it all solo

Things are taking a sinister turn in Puzzle Thread and I'm not qualified to be their drawfag but heck I'm certainly trying.
Admittedly I'd rather make something cute but here we are. Also I find it a little intimidating going from concept to finished piece... feels like trying to punch above where I'm really at currently but I know I can probably do it if I try just a bit harder.
>>
>>42799734
I'm jealous of the ambition some of you anons still have. Ive been forcing myself to draw and animate a few years past when I enjoyed going it for hours a day. Now, I can only tolerant one hour at a time, and dont like exploring ideas or practicing poses. I miss my drive.

Anon I... wasted years of my life not practicing my skills. I was a small time hobbyist pony artist back in 2012. I kind of know how you feel. When I stopped making and posting art, I became a shade and slowly and painfully faded out of existence. That's how it was for a long time. Yet here I am, doing a few things now and then. However painful it gets, life will go on, new opportunities and adventures will arise. There were times I lamented giving up perhaps too easily. I applaud you for your strength, even if it's hard on you, and hope you can keep going and find some joy in what you create. Art can be a beautiful thing when you reach it with the right frame of mind.

I went to sleep after reading your post thinking, “Man, this is going to suck so hard. I really don’t want to learn an entirely new animation software.”
Then I woke up at 2:00 a.m., convinced there had to be a way to make this work in Clip Studio Paint. I started digging through forum posts, looking for anything about using effects to simulate the boiling-line technique without having to redraw and recolor every single cel.
I turned on my PC with my newly acquired knowledge, made this, and then went right back to sleep.
Turns out, there is a way to do it in CSP: you just need to lower the canvas resolution to 854×480 and use a combination of the Liquify tool and the Zigzag distortion effect.
Now it’s time to start working on my next pony animation.
>>
>>42801655
I've always wondered if you can pull it off with a liquify brush or warp transform. Just duplicate the original drawing and push and pull the lines in spots to make it jiggle. The brush (or transform tool) must have a "nearest neighbor" mode, otherwise you will get aliasing and lose the pixelated nature of your brushes. I wonder if any raster program can do that.
I've tried it in Krita and it smudges and aliases the brush strokes, not a good result.
Also an idea is to do it in a vector program, where you can actually push and pull the paths themselves to do it, but again getting pixelated look in one is not something I know how to do. Just some ideas.

For future reference when I draw accurate or semi-accurate show style pony eyes it should be a circle or oval with the lower part of the eye lids erased like pic related?

>>42807005
generally speaking yeah, colt/filly's eyes tend to be very round while stallion eyes are ovular like the typical mare eyes of course without lashes. rounder shapes are quite appealing in general though so round eyes are usually a safe bet for general appeal.

If you need more context as to why this edgy thing exists, it's cover art for an AI generated, but written lovingly by Anon song posted in Puzzle Thread. Basically the puzzle ponies are menaced by this anti-chad faggot who shows up to the puzzle late and steals the last piece while parading his own ego, very heavily dramatised.

hers how you draw clothes on cartoon characters imo: practice by drawing the clothing you want very realistically. Then, simplify it down when you go to draw the cartoon version. you need to learn how to draw real clothing before you can understand what it would look as abstracted to cartoon form. picrel is something I myself made a while ago.

Sound advice Anon, I remember when my sister taught me to draw she put great emphasis on doing visual studies. Like if I draw a dozen dudes in suits from references I'll at least have some idea what I'm doing. Guh, I haven't done proper studies in over a decade though, when I was actually serious about being an artist. It's a fluke that I'm pushing myself at all again I mean until recently pic related was the extent of my artistic ambition. I agree with the other anon, don't erase the "bad" ones since they can be used to see the differences in your version and the reff. Also using shapes in the beginning is good as >>42808693 said. I will add that you should try and see past all the details the design has and just think of the proportions and positioning of all the elements in very basic shapes which you then build upon. Is there a specific part that is blocking the rest of the piece from forming?

>>42809285
I think its the problem of making an artstyle translate to another, not knowing where to start (do i draw the arms first? The cup? The head?) Like, what is the reference point from which to base the rest of the drawing on?
How do you artists choose where to begin? Does it change based on what it is youre drawing?

Also fug, you guys are doing so much better at making this seem possible, i seem to be at a mental block for the above reasons when it comes to strange poses (those arms, their thickness based on trying to look as close to on model as possible) and expressions (eye placement, lip shape, how the nose relates to the placement and shape of the lips)

>>42809867
I would be happy to do this, and not to make excuses but ive got all these other Card assignments and santees I gotta draw for as well! Time crunch is real, though its mostly self imposed for anyone besides my main Santee and Card Assignments (which this drawing is not one of them)

I love it, I tried hipaint (feels amateur, especially in the brush departament) and krita (hard to navigate on a touchscreen and cramped) before and cps wins easily
the default brushes are great but you can always get more from their website and it has a nice simple mode freeing up a lot of the screen
It crashed twice on me but I have the samsung tab s6 lite 2024 and use a shitload of layers so kind of my fault, apart from that I had no problems

I feel like a speedrunner chasing the elusive record to make a 20 min ep in one bastard week. I'm currently focusing on making the ponies look cuter. To make the Hasbro show's flash rig designs easier to translate into hand-drawn characters. I'm using "banned from daily equestria" characters as a reference for the updated style. To achieve a productivity level comparable to Tamers, my calculations indicate a requirement of approximately 50 drawings daily. I don't think this is a reasonable goal to aim for ,but I'm having a lot of fun trying to achieve it.

Hell yeah based thanks brother. Denmark and Sweden are shit talking eachother as God and nature intended for sure. I know for a fact Sweden called her a Danish bastard and most certainly made a potato in the mouth joke. I'm not 100% on the details though as my Swedish is minimalistic at best, I should learn to read it better atleast. I think Iceland is sad about not having a drink purely off a guess. Norway and Finland are just vibing in the back doing shots of koskenkorva viina.

Norway and Finland are just enjoying the nordics favorite pastime, drinking high-proof spirits and cheering. Denmark and Sweden are bickering as usual.

Iceland thinks they both drank too much.

Glad that you liked it! Your mares were a treat to draw and I hope to do more in the future.
>>
>>42819291
It's fantastic, anon!
Tamers level output is frightening to me, but I'm glad you are enjoying the challenge and tasks of optimizing! That optimizing can really be seen in the animation, where you gradually eased into what frames to do "boiling" transformations to, and which ones might not need it, as well as which specific areas and even different kinds of multi-frame animation to use!
I'm also liking the vibe a lot!
It's got weird, out-there, almost dreamlike events and humor that are a lot of fun, and all the "correct" voices that I personally enjoy as well, but without as much of the mean and abusive streak that comes with Tamers' worlds, which leaves me much more happy!
>>

After the first few didn't make want to kill myself over the result, decided to do keep going with some others I might need for the cards and gift. That surprisingly ended up being enjoyable enough, for me to go and complete the rest of the Mane 6 as well. I wont make any promises how active I'll be here, but this probably won't turn into never drawing ponies again until I have to do so for a future event.

Also from some drawings since then and for the cards. It seems like I end being happier with the overall proportions the less I try to actively stay close to the exact FiM proportions. Will definitely try to reduce my dependence on reference pictures going forward.

Hope you don't mind the critique, but You should animate only the extremes of the mouth, not all the phonemes, anon
>>
>>42825649
not at all, anon, feedback is one of the principles of learning after all, but i'm not too sure what you mean. I did these after watching one of Richard Williams' videos on the subject, so i tried not drawing how every word sounds and just draw two or three extremes, but maybe i made a mistake inbetweening or something.
>>
>>42825695
Ah, then it's not your fault anon, I know the demonstration you're talking about. On the 'bang' example, he doesn't even demonstrate that the last part should end on a closed teeth shape, not the partially open mouth shape as demonstrated. you need the 'nn' shape mouth to finalize the 'bang' (technically 'ban'). It's easier just to point you to the show for examples of how the animators do stuff and extrapolate it from there

example of 'hello', Twilight, a little zoomed out, though:
https://youtu.be/B2SOHEzRk_k?t=431

example of 'hello', fluttershy, obscured for a frame or two, but is a little clearer
https://youtu.be/cHeGH3UygaM?t=534

example of 'bang', pinkie pie, not a 'happy' mouth shape:
https://youtu.be/fmjadMyW-zg?t=1043

example of 'bang', Applejack, though, it's a blink and you miss it kind of deal
https://youtu.be/zstxk_7PrDk?t=189

Plus, there's more examples in the book where he breaks it down into more the more simple mouth shape process on page 313 and onwards, though I assume you've probably already read it at this point: https://theswissbay.ch/pdf/Gentoomen%20Library/Animation/The%20_Animator%27s_Survival_Kit.pdf

You're doing great work, though!

These are very impressive!
It's a very cool style, line-less and blocking things out with colors and light values. I kind of imagine the black BG helps facilitate making the colors the main players, without needing contour lines to define shapes and borders.
I'm really digging the lighting; the different distinct levels of light and levels of shadow, like the shadows cast from her big hair fringe, and how well they define and bring out all the shapes.

Now I'm not very good at anatomy either, but I'll give you rambling pointers anyway.
I think the "baby-ness" comes from the way his back, rump and belly gives him a very large and round lower torso.
The appearance of him having very little neck also adds to the foal look; his high front legs suggest the neck/body transition is just below his head, yet the first torso bulge is way lower, adding to the "paunch" look.

It is a pretty "human inspired" pose, which is very common in the show too, but I think that's what's made things a bit tricky. The high "shoulder" line and short neck matches a humans layout, but not pone.
And I suspect that "human pose" focus is what tricked your brain into giving the lad two sets of thighs as well.
Unguligrade creatures walk on their tippy-toes, so their legs are quite different from human ones, particularly in the directions they hinge. MLP ponies' cartoony nature means you can bend and flex their limbs a lot more than nature would allow, and their models have very short and kinda hidden "shins" that one might misinterpret/forget are there at all, but one has to keep the basic anatomy in mind.
>>
>Tfw you recently started a big project that has you feeling the most inspired and engaged you have in a long while but then you have to fly to cocksucking Utah for five days before you can work on it any more. I fucking hate that place and all the yapping normies I have to pretend to care about.
