Playing major seventh chords from outside the key can be very evil/dissonant sounding. For example Emaj7 inserted into a Bm/Dmaj progression can sound very "evil". Where if the chord is played by itself with no context it sounds like a beautiful smooth major7th. E major7 by the nut is a great chugging chord to throw in during evil pal muting sludge riffs.

A dominant 7 shares three notes with c#dim. With it's fourth notes being A... C#, E, G make a c#dim. Where A, C#, E, G make A dom7. G being the flat fifth of the diminished chord. A progression of Gmaj7, C#dim, and A7 creates a flow that allows the tonality of the G to flow into the C#diminished chord where it highlights the change to the flat 5, and than olowing you to chromatically move up to the a from the flat fifth to make the dom7... Those chords also highlight the key very strongly. Playing the d major scale over that progression would be a good vamp.
