Anons, could someone please take a look at the list below and recommend anything I might like? i know a lot of bands and albums, but this is the kind of stuff that works for me the best. I grew up listening to some metal thanks to my father (RIP) who liked all sorts of music, but definitely had a big love for metal specifically. Regardless, I'm quite green when it comes to the genre and most of the time, I feel like I just don't know what I'm doing/looking for:

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (not into the epic/theatrical shit, but this was a tasteful take on it)
Grave - Into the Grave / You'll Never See
Cryptopsy - None So Vile (Once Was Not was pretty ok, definitely interesting)

Other than that, I think Sepultura does some things very well for me. I also don't shy away from the more adventurous (debatable, I know) types like old Fear Factory or the SYL's 'City' album. The biggest thing that clicks for me I think is that when the band doesn't shy away from low end in their mix and acoustic drums, plus, I like when they allow for some groove. Things I'm not too big into are melodic metal, which to me, is rather a very fine line to walk on - I don't oppose it in principle though.

There is literally an entire martial rhythmic motif shared across the entire album, not that you would know since likely you could barely piece together a riff from the album, nor do songs "end abruptly", the title track works itself to its climax and finishes closing its idea where Famished for Breath steps in.

The true reality is that Popcletus is made for you, its a watered down easy to understand pop version of DsO just as Hasjarl intended it to be.

>Interviewer: Why Paracletus is, seemingly, more focused and straightforward perhaps?
>Hasjarl: This is because we consciously decided to give the songs structures that were somewhat closer to traditional rock structures.

Just accept your place as a midwit and continue blasting pop music, you can't into art music.

Correct. Metal isn't good yet, in the future it will be finally be made into a serious art.

We need a synthesis of Ehnahre, DsO, Ad Nauseam, Elend, Ban's Mort album, First Fragment, Gnaw Their Tongues, and Jute Gyte with a much tighter focus on through composition and higher asperations.

you could dig through the various subgenres of doom. try disEMBOWELMENT for funeral doom. I also like Yob for the stoner doom genre but they're not real popular around here. I'd also be curious to see if you like death doom, try Incantation "Onward To Golgotha".

The Cryptopsy and Dying Fetus, you might like Necrophagist and Nile. They're all on the line between technical death and brutal death metal fwiw.

Not sure what to suggest for the groove metal bands.

In general, you might go to RYM and dig through the metal genres and just try shit out. Black metal might be a bumpy ride at first because the sound is supposed to be harsh as opposed to heavy. Metal archives is also a good resource for discovering what genres things are and then what bands sound somewhat similar.

"OK, I finally get around to listening to this record after 20+ years. "Obscura" was one of those albums that everyone praised when it came out. I bought a lot of records in 1998 so I am not sure why I passed on this one. Perhaps it was because I had "The Erosion of Sanity" already and didn't like it. Maybe it was because I was bored of death metal and getting more interested in the hardcore scene. My favourite style of hardcore at the time was dissonant, metallic and angular (influenced by pioneers like Rorschach, Coalesce, Neurosis and Acme). "Obscura" owes a lot to bands like these and my 20 year old self would have loved it.

My 40 year old self is less impressed. "Obscura" just sounds grating and unpleasant to these ears. The song structures are disjointed and complex with lots of unexpected changes, weird timings, chords and tones. This itself is not the problem. The problem is that the songs lack any momentum or direction. Even the most jarring avant-prog bands (e.g., Art Bears, Aksak Maboul, U-Totem) propel their songs forward with purpose. Most of "Obscura" meanders around into musical dead-ends. These songs go nowhere, and they also lack the aggression and anger that makes extreme metal fun to listen to."

What did you think of this album?
>>
>>122774419
I can Already tell it's mid at best from the cover
>>
>>122774451
It's surprisingly extremely symphonic. Almost dimmu borgir tier. But not in a cheesy way.
>>
>>122774419
Actually the only one that matters are composer and drummer, in which case it is just Arcturus with different lineup.
7/10 at least since Arcturus are pretty good, and obviously since it's Norwegian.

Did you know the Hulkster was offered to take Cliff Burton's place, but the he politely declined because he was already set to replace Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones?
Unfortunately neither gig worked out because the Hulkster had prior obligations to go over King Kong Bundy that year on April 7th at the Memorial Sports Arena during the main event of WrestleMania 2, brother
