>>122861041Probably Procul Harum with In Held 'Twas In I, or The Nice's Ars Longa Vita Brevis. A lesser known but early example was The Collectors with What Love (Suite). And then most of the major prog bands developed their own 20ish minute songs that generally became fan favorites, e.g.,ELP - TarkusPink Floyd - EchoesGenesis - Supper's ReadyKing Crimson - LizardYes - Close To The EdgeVan Der Graaf Generator - A Plague Of Lighthouse KeepersCaravan - Nine Feet UndergroundRush - 2112Not to forget Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick and Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells which were instead ~40 minutes long each (but with album flips, had 2 20 minute parts each).20 minutes of course being the typical length of an album side.

>>122869399We had a TFC-themed thread a few weeks ago, actually! It's not the most proggy Pink Floyd album but it's proggy enough by extension, I guess.
>>122868438Depends on how we define "drone". There aren't a lot of prog bands that would spend 10+ minutes making droney sounds. But if you count ambient sections built around a drone note, a lot of bands have done that. Yes - Close To The Edge (I Get Up, I Get Down), Pink Floyd, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Rush - Xanadu, etc. They incorporate it like they do other genres - just short little sections that change to something else before it gets too boring.
>>122868949Keys To Ascension (and yes, I mean the studio stuff), Magnification and Fly From Here all have their moments.I will agree that The Ladder is overrated garbage... People fall for its trap because the first song is "proggy", but the stuff in the middle is pretty bad.

He wrote "Sleep No More."Univers Zero's "1313," "Heresie," and "Crawling Wind" are masterpieces. Michel Berckmans is a bad-ass bassoon and oboe player. If you want to hear the exact source of Univers Zero's music, listen to "Chamber Music" by Albert Huybrechts (1899-1938), a KochSchwann Musica Mundi cd, made in Austria 1988.I like Henry Cow, Slapp Happy, and Art Bears because of Lindsay Cooper’s bassoon playing.Do you like the music from the French label "Les Disques du Crépuscule"?RIO music led me heavily into classical music by the time I was 30.

since this is the KC general i'll post this herei just found out something that was bothering my autism for a long time.whenever i hear Starless (the central park '74 version) theres something that bothers me deeply and it's the fact that when the violin solo comes you dont hear a fucking violin at all and that kind of ruins a bit the monster the band was building up.for a time i thought that something stupid happened with the violin sound on that particular song or that maybe since the only recording available comes from a cassette bootleg the recorder couldnt capture the violin at all during that part of the song... but it turns out it was something delivered. I found out about it hearing the piece of shit version of Starless the band made available on the first disc of "the great deceiver" and when the violin solo is about to come... nothing. Only a small solo on the keyboard that kinda feels like the other members of the band wanted to ridicule Cross by making him play a solo on an instrument he doest master.the point is what the fuck we're they thinking, the violin solo (when everything else before was played right) is the point where you feel the song is crushing your bones from the intensity being presented and they fucking butchered it, on their final performance, on propuse.

While it's becoming popular to consider Red overrated compared to Larks and SABB, I firmly believe it's the only KC album that comes close to recapturing the majesty of ITCOTCK and serving as another cohesive and fully realized song cycle on that level.

>>122905757If you put Rush in the same category as Asia again I will kill you. That's more insulting than the claims that they're not prog.
Now this... this is good.
What is the best prog album of the 2020's so far?
Even when gooning I blast prog
>>122908840
>>122908840I need to hear more
I have been on a massive Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree binge these days, Arriving Somewhere But Not Here in particular has been on replay for almost a week now. I don't know what y'all have against the man honestly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eww9IaHumLgsad they never performed this live
>>122908840what a disappointing trilogy. 3 good songs max
i like THRAK
>>122912060It's okay
>>122912051Everyone says King Gizzard ripped off Oh Sees which may be true but Oh Sees getting heavier was DEFINITELY a response to Gizzard getting heavier.
>>122907542never listened to neo-prog never will
>>122912060VROOM VROOM
>Prog epic split across multiple albums
>>122911852XBOX
Legend has it that if you mention Steve Wilson in any capacity, you will soon hear "XBOX"
>>122912774>prog epic split across entire discography
>>122912608Listen to Marillion with Fish at least
>>122914794What did the ending mean?
>>122883838Fates Warning and Queensryche did it before them
>>122912608always listened to neo-prog always will
>>122912608Don't give a fuck faggot. Kill yourself... RETARD.
>>122865104Rudimentary Peni - Cacophony

>>122914837everybody copied Dream Theater so no, they did the sound everyone loves first.
Does Queensryche have any other good albums besides Mindcrime?
What does /prog/ think of If?
>>122914830>LARRY LARRY LARRY LARRYDude i bet Larry also cheated on his wife or some shit
>>122914803What band?
>>122916081kinda iffy
>>122899867>recapturing the majesty of ITCOTCKITCOTKC is a great album, but only people whose sole exposure to KC is ITCOTKC consider it their best album. Larks and Red are superior in almost every way.The only overrated KC album is Discipline and ITCOTKC. Discipline is a very good album, but people choose to ignore half the songs when rating it. ITCOTKC is overrated for the reasons stated above. It's baby's first prog.
>>122917386>only people whose sole exposure to KC is ITCOTKC consider it their best album>but people choose to ignore half the songs when rating Disciplineyou're just pulling words out of your ass
>>122917409no? even normalfags know ITCOTKC and think it's somehow the greatest which prog has to offer, and Thela Hun Ginjeet alone disqualifies Discipline from being their best 80s album.
>>122917452court is just one of prog's best. Just because you like red or larks better doesn't mean court is not one of the keystones of this genre. KC is my favorite band and I personally think the tourists/normies happen to be correct that it's their best album, but even if you disagree it's just disingenuous to say that ONLY normies think it's the best. I also used to think that court was kinda overrated and it was much more wise to prefer the other albums, but i grew out of it because it's delusional. Fripp was never able to make an album this grand.>thelastill making shit up i see
>>122917553I obviously consider it to be a great album, which I said.>it's just disingenuous to say that ONLY normies think it's the bestLooks like you haven't figured out what a hyperbole is yet.
>>122917296probably magma excluding 2 or so albums
>>122917767The band that Bill Bruford played for: Genesis.
>>122917778Good answer but I forgot /mu/ doesn’t allow spoilers for whatever reason.

>>122915025I was very drunk and having had a little nap I'd like to mend my obnoxious comment a bititchycock is fine but I'm just a bit tired of itI shall listen to Scott Walker to nurse this hangover... what a life
>>122918339>Scott WalkerDangerously based. Which songs/albums?
>>122918373Scott 3 at the momentnot quite in the headspace for his avant garde stuff, perhaps I'll listen later..his early albums have always been comfy, I like the arrangements
>>122918426Excellent choice, Scott 3 is one of my favorites. I love both eras but Tilt and The Drift tend to be what I go back to the most, Scott 3 being my fave of the baroque era

All this time has passed me byIt doesn't seem to matter now...
>>122917296Lesser known answer but there's Sound Horizon, some weird japanese neo-classical prog rock opera bandAll of their albums are concept albums with elaborate stories based on "fantastical" fairy-tale interpretations of ancient to medieval europe and they're all apparently set in the same continuity even if centuries separate them.also their live shows are over the tophttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ft0BqZ2sBzA

>>122920231for me it's birdman, but that version of i talk to the wind is really god damn close. for being a low-quality demo tape recorded inside a house, brondesbury tapes has an impressive production to it. the layering is rather impressive even though the quality itself is crispy
>>122920231>the best thing they did is a song from their first album come on now
>>122920804What's wrong with that?True debut album of a good handful of artists are their best albums or include their most famous songs.
