Yooo bro, have you ever heard about "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd? That's a deep cut right there, once you're done with it I also recommend you listen to "In The Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson because it's also a super obscure little-known album.

One of America's finest Prog offerings IMO. The album can be a bit long for some, but I personally do not mind that. But I've always wondered how some random motherfuckers from Gainesville, FL managed to create this, it seems like the least Proggy place, but hey, there ya go.

>>
>>122861501
listen to MDK, if you like that listen to Wurdah Itah, Kohntarkosz, K.A, and Emehntehtt-Re, and it has kind of mixed opinions i guess, but Zess is one of my favorites by them, don't forget their Debut (Kobaia), it's pretty different from their other stuff but it's still great, and their live albums like Live/Hhai(probably their best release) and Retrospektïẁ Parts 1 and 2, also Udu Wudu and Attahk are both underrated, skip Merci.
>>
>>122861041
i guess the nice

>>
>>122861041

Probably Procul Harum with In Held 'Twas In I, or The Nice's Ars Longa Vita Brevis. A lesser known but early example was The Collectors with What Love (Suite).

And then most of the major prog bands developed their own 20ish minute songs that generally became fan favorites, e.g.,
ELP - Tarkus
Pink Floyd - Echoes
Genesis - Supper's Ready
King Crimson - Lizard
Yes - Close To The Edge
Van Der Graaf Generator - A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers
Caravan - Nine Feet Underground
Rush - 2112

Not to forget Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick and Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells which were instead ~40 minutes long each (but with album flips, had 2 20 minute parts each).

20 minutes of course being the typical length of an album side.

We had a TFC-themed thread a few weeks ago, actually! It's not the most proggy Pink Floyd album but it's proggy enough by extension, I guess.
>>
>>122868438
Depends on how we define "drone". There aren't a lot of prog bands that would spend 10+ minutes making droney sounds. But if you count ambient sections built around a drone note, a lot of bands have done that. Yes - Close To The Edge (I Get Up, I Get Down), Pink Floyd, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Rush - Xanadu, etc. They incorporate it like they do other genres - just short little sections that change to something else before it gets too boring.
>>
>>122868949
Keys To Ascension (and yes, I mean the studio stuff), Magnification and Fly From Here all have their moments.

I will agree that The Ladder is overrated garbage... People fall for its trap because the first song is "proggy", but the stuff in the middle is pretty bad.

>Eddie Jobson had recently been in Frank Zappa’s band, and he brought the great man down to the studio for the playback party at the completion of the UK album. You turn the music up loud (it's going to be the first and last time you'll hear the entire album on such a great audio system), fill the room with friends and record execs, and crack open a bottle of something sparkly. A great night. Frank made nice noises, as I remember, and was the perfect gentleman.

I'm the anon who asked you about "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell." My favorite short Art Zoyd songs are Marees, Beffroi, and Sleep No More, found on the "Nosferatu" cd.

I think that Thierry Zaboitzeff's "Miniaturen Zoydian Suite In 3 Movements" by Zaboitzeff & Crew is a great work of music. He was the cellist in Art Zoyd. He wrote "Sleep No More."

Univers Zero's "1313," "Heresie," and "Crawling Wind" are masterpieces. Michel Berckmans is a bad-ass bassoon and oboe player. If you want to hear the exact source of Univers Zero's music, listen to "Chamber Music" by Albert Huybrechts (1899-1938), a KochSchwann Musica Mundi cd, made in Austria 1988.

I like Henry Cow, Slapp Happy, and Art Bears because of Lindsay Cooper’s bassoon playing.

Do you like the music from the French label "Les Disques du Crépuscule"?

RIO music led me heavily into classical music by the time I was 30.

since this is the KC general i'll post this here
i just found out something that was bothering my autism for a long time.

whenever i hear Starless (the central park '74 version) theres something that bothers me deeply and it's the fact that when the violin solo comes you dont hear a fucking violin at all and that kind of ruins a bit the monster the band was building up.

for a time i thought that something stupid happened with the violin sound on that particular song or that maybe since the only recording available comes from a cassette bootleg the recorder couldnt capture the violin at all during that part of the song... but it turns out it was something delivered. I found out about it hearing the piece of shit version of Starless the band made available on the first disc of "the great deceiver" and when the violin solo is about to come... nothing. Only a small solo on the keyboard that kinda feels like the other members of the band wanted to ridicule Cross by making him play a solo on an instrument he doest master.

the point is what the fuck we're they thinking, the violin solo (when everything else before was played right) is the point where you feel the song is crushing your bones from the intensity being presented and they fucking butchered it, on their final performance, on propuse.

While it's becoming popular to consider Red overrated compared to Larks and SABB, I firmly believe it's the only KC album that comes close to recapturing the majesty of ITCOTCK and serving as another cohesive and fully realized song cycle on that level.
>>

it just doesn't work as well for me, don't get me wrong it's a great album, but for the Wetton era i'd rather listen to Larks and SaBB, Starless and Fallen Angel are some of their best songs though.
>>
>>122899913
I’m not saying it’s necessarily better than the other albums, but that it really feels like a true successor to ITCOTCK in its tone and structure. It feels like a perfect marriage of the very composed and conceptual style of Crimson Mark 1 with the loser, wilder improvisational style of the Larks era.

ITCOTKC is a great album, but only people whose sole exposure to KC is ITCOTKC consider it their best album. Larks and Red are superior in almost every way.
The only overrated KC album is Discipline and ITCOTKC. Discipline is a very good album, but people choose to ignore half the songs when rating it. ITCOTKC is overrated for the reasons stated above. It's baby's first prog.

court is just one of prog's best. Just because you like red or larks better doesn't mean court is not one of the keystones of this genre. KC is my favorite band and I personally think the tourists/normies happen to be correct that it's their best album, but even if you disagree it's just disingenuous to say that ONLY normies think it's the best. I also used to think that court was kinda overrated and it was much more wise to prefer the other albums, but i grew out of it because it's delusional. Fripp was never able to make an album this grand.

Lesser known answer but there's Sound Horizon, some weird japanese neo-classical prog rock opera band

All of their albums are concept albums with elaborate stories based on "fantastical" fairy-tale interpretations of ancient to medieval europe and they're all apparently set in the same continuity even if centuries separate them.
