Prog rock's not really that pretentious at all and a lot of the negative stereotypes people give the music and its fans actually emerged from prog metal and were retroactively applied to prog rock for whatever reason

>The lyrics are Finnish, not Kobaïan
That doesn't stop some bands, Eskaton's a zeuhl classic but their lyrics are entirely in French.
Defining zeuhl's a bit harder than "funny incoherent lyrics" because there's a few bands that sing in their mother tongues and instrumental bands with no singing at all.

What you posted is still definitely zeuhl or zeuhl-adjacent
>>
>>123126594
>Jethro Tull? Technical
not really though
and what about VDGG?
>>
>>123130115
>>123130137
how do give so much importance to labels, they're just for convenience
>>
>>123130137
Yes, I suppose that's true. Zeuhl has always been an anomaly to me because it's so difficult to define. Is Zeuhl RIO? Is RIO Zeuhl? Is it both? I think on the latter point, it's easily interchangeable if not mutually adjacent. Eskaton is great, by the way.
>>
>>123130162
autistim is prog
>>
>>123130162
I think the labels are important if you want to find similar music in the vein of something like Univers Zero and Magma. Sure, they fall under the progressive banner, but they leagues separated stylistically from traditional prog rock like Yes or Genesis, etc.
>>
>>123130182
>Eskaton is great, by the way.
Eskaton might just be the peak example of a so-uncool-it's-cool-again band.
too late for prog, too early for (?), just nicely weird and funky
>>
>>123130182
Zeuhl emerged from avant-prog but what really distinguished it is that avant-prog is more "nebulous" and less defined while zeuhl is more disciplined and has more rules. Zeuhl's just loosely defined around bands that take most of their influence and sound from Magma, but even then Magma's not really a consistent sound since Attahk sounds nothing like Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh yet both are agreed to be zeuhl and there's bands that only take influence from one album but not the other and vice versa that people still agree are zeuhl.

Zeuhl's mainly split into three camps though there's zeuhl bands that are outliers
>influenced by early Magma (Kobaia and 1001 Centrigrades)
A more canterbury sound.
>influenced by Theuz Hamtaahk trilogy and Kohntarkosz trilogy
The epic operatic oppressive military marches with relentless vocal chanting
>influenced by mid-late 70s Magma (1975 Live, Udu Wudu, etc)
Much more jazz fusion-y, technical, very throbbing repetitive bassline focus, funky, surreal and keyboards and stuff.

You have zeuhl bands that don't really fall into any of these camps but are still distinctly zeuhl though.

RIO is just a movement within avant-prog that got mistaken as a genre as the decades went on. RIO was just a statement from a handful avant-prog bands against mainstream rock trends that grew into a """subgenre""" though there's not really much of a difference between RIO and avant-prog musically.
>>
>>123130393

>>
>>123128456
lol nice one
>>
>>123130686
Another thing to note is that Zeuhl often feels highly conceptual and cohesive while most avant-prog generally doesn't, avant-prog's more likely to just jump into dissonant and disjointed passages or jump to brand new ideas at a whim and songs tend to feel aimless (not necessarily a bad thing)

Zeuhl's still very strange but it's very structured music.

I reverse image searched the picture and just got a previous thread I posted it in lol. It’s obscure as fuck so let me break it down: that is a composite shot I edited of cult actress-singer Jessica Harper from experimental film Rameau’s Nephew. It’s from a scene that jump cuts a few times so everyone is briefly standing/sitting in different areas. I named it that not only because there are three Jessicas in the shot but also because she stars in Suspiria, part of what is collectively known as the Three Mothers trilogy.

Kobaia (the song, not the full album) is sung in English too. People just don't notice it because they don't expect it and it's heavily accented.

There's a man inside a valley
On top a mountain gloom in a glow
That has servedascradle for Kobaïa
Butthat was so, so long ago

Youhave come to find Kobaïa
We have come to find thesun
Wecanmake it easyfor you
Still, welaugh and still we run

Over swamps and slaughter houses
Nomad swans who jump and die
Stand before the speechless statues
Till cobalt flowers catch your eyes

Oh, In the wind's inscribed a message
"The fire and the roses are one"
May you have a peaceful passage
Kobaïa is everyone

Everyone thinks the polar opposite of prog is punk, but when you think about it actually it's power pop.
>>
>>123135203
I wouldn't say so. Power pop can have some really fascinating harmonic structures and great solos. Think of Todd Rundgren, he's power pop while still being proggy as hell.
I'd say the polar opposite is hardcore punk and any subsequent subgenres.
>>
>>123135203
The idea that punk and prog are polar opposites/had beef with eachother was bullshit pushed by music journalists.

Yes, that is also typical of most avant-garde/free jazz improv music as well.

>>123136354
I'm into the stuff they did up until about Octavarium. Images & Words was their peak, and Scenes is very overrated.
>>
>>123136354
I made instrumental edits of some, and have been pleasantly surprised relistening. But the cheesy end of solos often make me laugh/cringe a bit

>>
>>123136407
Scenes was a great listen on one lengthy car ride, but a lot of the songs just aren't very interesting on their own. It's still home to my favorite DT song, Fatal Tragedy. The absolute flurry of piano right before the guitar solo and the way it seamlessly transitions into a synth solo. Always gets me. Another standout is Strange Deja Vu, the bridge with the funky riff are just awesome.

funny how this is their most accessible album, but it's still very weird and far out for the music at the time
even in prog rock, VDGG is a very hard band to classify. I can't think of anything that sounds quite like them
terrific sax riffs, screaming organs, drums that went everywhere all at once, free form soloing, and vocals that were yelling and softly singing, sometimes both at once

Rush matured with the sci-fi concept 2112 (1976): the side-long title-track is a complex and magniloquent suite that weds Yes and Led Zeppelin, while emphasizing the virtuoso performances of Pearl's pyrotechnic drumming (which owes a debt to the Who's Keith Moon), Lee's petulant, castrato shrill and Lifeson's epic riffs.

Synthesizers increased the level of sophistication on A Farewell to Kings (1977), which contains the simple Closer To The Heart and the ambitious Cygnus X-1, and Hemispheres (1978), which contains the catchy The Trees and the elegant La Villa Strangiato, a lengthy sequel to Cygnus X-1, with a celebrated guitar solo. Their glacial and cybernetic "metal muzak" had reached a terminal point.

Rush then made an abrupt aboutface. Permanent waves (1980) turned them into stars via shorter and catchier numbers such as Spirit Of The Radio, Jacob's Ladder and Free Will. However, they remained faithful to the ethos (if not to the sound) of progressive-rock by focusing on albums rather than on singles. Moving Pictures (1981) sold even more copies, despite the fact that the material was weaker (Limelight, with Alex Lifeson's best solo, Red Barchetta, Tom Sawyer, the instrumental YYZ).

do you fags download/rip your albums in Flac or MP3 (or something else)? do you hear a difference? is it worth the extra space to get albums in flac vs 320kbps?
>>
>>123138837
Test for Echo sits on that Rush territory where you only listen it so you can call yourself a Rush completionist, no one discusses that album except when bringing up the sheer fall from grace Rush was experiencing on that 90s decade.
If you want to taste prime Rush, listen to their 70s album right to Moving Pictures, if you want to crave for more, try their 80s post-Moving Pictures album right until Presto where they were using synth a lot more extensively. and then you can finally listen to the rest where Rush abandoned their prog and synth sound, to go back making straightforward hard rock songs but sadly got overwhelmed by the sound of much younger other hard rock bands.
>>
>>123142445
I'm not even a Rush fan and I like at least three songs from TtE
>>
>>123142475

>>

first of all dont be rude
and second of all yes, theres a difference, its worth it if the album is really well produced, has a good remaster (if its an old album) and is well mixed so it can benefit properly from being in FLAC and if you mostly hear music on your computer
if you are a phone listener then i would say you should only have in FLAC the albums/songs you enjoy the most, the rest will be ok in 320kbps

Theoretically possible to tell the difference with some "killer samples", in practice not possible (assuming a good encode). Try for yourself:

eh, It’s a good A-tier album but Trevor Horn’s voice isn’t suited for Yes
Check out the Drama tour they did, first time they got boos from the audience because Horn can’t hit the same notes as Anderson, so they had like four songs they could actually play live, even Machine Messiah splices Anderson’s vocal in with Horn’s so you can’t really tell who’s singing
>>
>>123147636
You're not wrong about his voice but IIRC he was only booed by British fans, the American part of the tour was pretty successful

Yeah he is still there, but you can tell when he’s singing. If you listen closely you can hear Anderson’s voice in some parts, which were taken partöy from the ’79 Paris sessions

He started by saying it was the first time he sat down onstage, a position he maintains to this day. “I’ve always been a seated guitar player, and to work in a rock group you couldn’t sit down?” he said with surprise. “‘No one sits down to play guitar!’ But I felt, I think it was about after 12 performances … it was impossible for me to stand and play. So I said, ‘Look, I’ve got to sit down,’ and Greg Lake said, ‘You can’t sit down – you’ll look like a mushroom!’ My considered opinion was that the mushroom is a fertility symbol in many cultures!”

Because of the vocals. I would have listened to a lot more Black MIDI if they were an instrumental band.

And they took the name of a genre unrelated to their own music, that’s another thing

i met Robert Fripp in a restaurant yesterday, and what a pretentious asshole, so i went up to him politely demanding an autograph and a photo, and he said "no, thanks i'm having a private dinner with my wife" what a rude asshole, i politely told him he's not that great of a musician, and his only good album is Beat, then i called him asshole, and what does he do? says "hey, that's rude, please leave us alone" what an pretentious asshole thing to say, then i started screaming and crying, then Robert sicks his security men on me (they said they worked for the restaurant, but they are probably full of shit) and they tackle me to the ground, then i go for his balls with the most violent force i've ever felt, but they beat the shit out of me and i get Tasered so they can arrest me, fuck him, and fuck all that band's fans, what a bunch of douchebags, Robert is an asshole and he had his security men assault me for practically no reason, i should also mention that i tried to throw a beer bottle at his head and he dodged it, and it hit a bystander on the head, and it's mostly his fault for dodging it.

No, I will. If Black Midi's the worst thing you've ever listened to, then you must also dislike King Crimson since Black Midi (especially Hellfire) is derivative of King Crimson.

thanks mate
I'm thinking of doing one where Lake pushes Fripp out of his limo
if you have any more KC stories, just tell me, and I'll try to give it a go

Hey prog, listen to this.
I won’t spoil what it is, but a very well know song by a very known group was obviously very much… inspiration

I like this one but it probably wouldn't work as a comic
>Recorded in September and October 1970 it featured a guest performance from Yes vocalist Jon Anderson. He had been approached by Greg Lake earlier in the year who had relayed Fripp’s interest in having the singer record with Crimson. “I said OK and gave him my number and then about three months later Bob rang me up and said I’m going to record next month,” Anderson remembers. He had no idea what he was going to sing until he turned up at Wessex, and then couldn’t help but smile when he saw the title. “Prince Rupert was the name of a train that would go past our school every Wednesday and I thought it’s so bizarre that he wrote this song which I sang and it had that kind of connection. Afterward, I told Bob that story, and you know Bob Fripp, he just said ‘Oh. Thank you, Jon. Bye.’” laughs Anderson.

Not quite a king crimson story, but I enjoy the one where steve hackett ate robert fripp's cheese

the Thela Hun Ginjeet story if you haven't made that one already haha. I like imagining that Fripp set off the gang on Belew to get a good story and to scare the fuKcing shit out of him as a bonus

The Power And The Glory is one of their best, not a huge fan of anything after it though, Free Hand is okay.
