I don't write mean shit in /prod/ because I am a mean asshole for no reason. you people just feel like it's mean because it shatters your delusions which in turn will actually make you better. And I am not going to lie to you, if you want to make listenable music there are too many points for you to think about for me to write in a comment. There is so much you could do to make this song more listenable that it would be like trying to write out "how to make music" to someone who doesn't know anything at all, then expecting them to actually make something of the information you provided them

Other response wasn't me I don't know the reference either. You've got your vocal fx carrying you a lot and you should look into some vocal coaching. You don't even need lessons just look online there's lots of great information. Also your drums aren't right for that track. You need a clear direction of what you're trying to do. The sound selection and chord progressions to me sounds to me like it wants to move into some big stadium type emotional pop rock sort of thing which would say you should use better drum libraries and learn to mix that kind of drum. But I don't really think that's what you want or are going for based on your vocal. I'd say either lean more into clean studio commercial type productions or the opposite way into a more lofi direction. And pirate melodyne so you can actually see how far off key you are

thank you for the in-depth feedback, I want to go more clean studio commercial definitely, I will do some vocal couching, do you have any resources to look up for this kinda clean shiny studio sound? do you think it will take long to get my skills up to that level? thanks again

they make splice loops for indie too dude
>>
>>123228182

there's like 2 splice loops in that track the rest is sound design. this track has no loops and it def goes hard

I really enjoy lofi electronic music but I know so little about mixing, synths etc. it just feels like such a huge effort to git gud. I can actually play an instrument and know basic music theory at least but yeah but have no idea where to start with this kind of thing. It's so annoying listening to my own crap made with basic Ableton instruments and then comparing it to stuff I like

How do I get good at this? Just keep making shit?
>>
>>123228149
There is a wealth of mixing information out there in particular for pop and also pop songwriting. It really depends on what aspect you're trying to improve it's best to find more specifically what you need on your own.

You should do critical listening and use reference tracks. Find something which is what you're going for and then break it down. No need to do recreations or any of that shit but if the band you like uses real drums you're not gonna get that out of an unprocessed sample pack or a drum machine. You also do not need to actually get a drum kit. Just learn how to emulate what they're doing. It can all be done in your computer at this point. High quality multisample libraries are going to be your friend but that means nothing if you don't have the knowledge to program an emulation of a real drummer.

also this hinges on your current level of understanding and ability about mixing in general therefore obviously I can't really recommend what you personally need. but basically having a defined goal, learning to compose, learning to perform, then learning to mix. Its all a long way of saying learn music. As long as you are measurably taking steps forward you're doing better than most people.

>>123228341
don't overthink it with lofi. Just get up and do it. Start out by fucking around with sampling, resampling and programming drum patterns. What does electronic music mean to you? Making house is very different to making jungle
>>
>>123228341
You can sample synths and drums and try it that way if you don’t want to/can’t buy hardware. It just take practice. Just like when you were learning your instrument. Every song I make I try to learn something on it to bring to the next track. It sucks ass but the difference of quality from when I started in March to now has made a noticeable improvement. Posting your stuff here and asking questions can be really helpful

for synths (as noob) i have tried alot, never got far. then installed tal noisemaker, did basic stuff with it, now i like synth1 and soon my body is ready for the virus ti. (OsTIrus with github firmware)

Last week I set up my desktop computer and installed Live 12 Lite, but I haven't touched it since. I just alternate between practicing classical pieces on piano, practicing drum rudiments on my pad, and listening to music.

subconscious procrastination etc
identify your mental triggers and avoidance-copes (you just did (I also just made this term up) and seek to rectify them; e.g i need to uninstall steam because morning gaming = "just one more game and then..."

e.g it took me fucking hours today to get out of bed and open ableton today (slightly a depression thing but ignoring that...)

Establishing a routine and mental triggers that will get you in front of your DAW, as well as removing all barriers of things you have to do before... uh...

Small lists of goals also help too:
Establish medium-long term goals to work toward, and come up with a small to do list every day so you don't have an excuse to just not do it.

E.g today for my unstructured time I already picked out a synth that i'm going to focus, and then i listed out a couple things from my current WIP's that i'm going to work on before that or starting a new song today.
Easy. Manageable.

>and then hopefully
That's not the mindset.
Your obstacle is getting started so you just have to open it, fuck around for 5 minutes, then close it. That's it.
There's ABSOLUTELY NO WAY you can't force yourself to suffer dicking around for 5 fucking minutes, so just do that once a day until you get used to open your daw like it's nothing.
If one of these times you feel like continuing a bit more, sure, you're allowed to, but the goal you have to start with is to just do 5 minutes.
After that it will be easier to put some actually meaningful time in, but for now you need to work on fixing your foot before you can worry about how many miles you run every day.

You said you've never used a daw before, so maybe spend those 5 minutes following along a little bit of a beginner tutorial or something. If that's too intimidating, wait until a future session.

Is music production supposed to be hard and tedious?
I have my main profession which is hard and tedious. I used music prod to do something different in my spare time, to vent creatively and explore art and such. Thing is, i kinda wanted to see if i could make music my main thing. But now that i have summer off i made production my no 1 thing and i had inspiration for a month or so. Made like 10 tracks. Now its gone and im wondering do i have to sit through it and make music even tho its hard and tedious and im forcing it? Can i even make good music that way? At this rate i wont make anything note worthy so i was wondering should i try really hard or just wait for the inspiration? I love making tracks when im inspired, i finish them in like half an hour and they always end up being one of my best work. When im tryharding i dilligently make a track for hours upon hours and im not even sure the end result is any good
>>
>>123234686
>Now its gone and im wondering do i have to sit through it and make music even tho its hard and tedious and im forcing it?

I'll answer with personal experience and by paraphrasing:
When asked by an interviewer "what's the difference between making music and putting out a record" fuckin Aphex Twin answers 'making music is just that, putting out records requires actually listening back and working etc' (or something like that).

I make music (or *work on it*) literally every day, mental health and schedule permitting.

Writing songs, messing around, experimenting etc takes no effort and is just fun to me; improvement is slow that way, but that's not really the goal of "just making music," and I don't even have to think about it.

*Working* on music, mixing, analyzing, planning, all things that *set expectations,* requires actual effort, and improving happens much faster that way.
It's usually not fun, but I do it because I want to improve and I find it fulfilling in spite of knowing it will ultimately lead nowhere.

I.e you need to compartmentalize these different expectations and thoughts you have on what making music entails and adjust accordingly.
Ultimately if it's really "just for fun" you need to become process oriented rather than result oriented- the writing is fun, and if it turns out to be good, it was just lucky. Doesn't matter because you're going to write a new one tomorrow anyway.

Yes, i also 'make music' but like i said right now even making music is tedious to me and not fun. imo through fun and experimenting good music happens.
I believe if my music inspired, helped or comforted just 1 person then the goal has been achieved. Because i know how much other peoples music meant to me.
I kinda want it to be more than just a hobby also.

I mean if making music isn't fun to you then...?

you can help other people in plenty of other ways, creative or not

But thats what i want to do, make music. I love music.
I just said that its not fun to me at the moment, because i have no inspiration, all i asked was should i force it through or wait for better mood

If you're actually trying to improve you don't wait for "inspiration."

Motivation/inspiration are false gods. Dedication is the only thing that will move you forward. Also, I’m gay.
