What does /prog/ think of progressive bluegrass?
I'm typically not a fan of country and adjacent genres, but I recently discovered Billy Strings and some of his stuff is actually really solid.

Pretty much all the studio albums from Freak Out to Lather, I didn’t bother with the 80s.
Just basic editing, chopping off the fat and filler and various crap. Oh you interrupt the song to insert obnoxiously loud pig noises? Fuck that, edited out, never have to suffer it again. Simple as.
>>
>>123966180

are you the same one that edited vocals out of Camel tracks
>>
>>123966239
Yup. I still do instrumentalisation sometimes, but it’s rare that it really works well without any vocals. And it needs decent enough material to be worth it, otherwise meh.
Lately I’m more into making my own redux version of albums, to get the “idealized” perfect version of albums I don’t like from beginning to end. It’s just for fun, doesn’t replace the original.

Just saw the David Cross band perform the entirety of Larks Tongues in Aspic. It was pretty great. Check it out if they are coming to a town near you. The only downside is they did not play Trio. I have no idea how the fuck David Cross playing King Crimson music doesn’t play Trio aka the most iconic violin piece they ever made.

I’ve bought every Dream Theater album that has come out in the past decade (since I have become financially secure enough to spend money on stuff I could just as easily pirate). I have also been to every North American tour they’ve done in that time period. I’ve finally given up on them. They’ve clearly been phoning it in for a while; this is no different. The only time I might see them live again is on a farewell tour and I won’t buy another album of theirs. I still love their old stuff.

This is probably not prog related but watching Christian Vander do John Coltrane covers is pretty based. It's probably too jazzy for most people here but if you're into Offering then I'd recommend it, you can definitely hear the similarities between that band and this, as opposed to Magma.

lol the whole reason this band exists is because Clive Nolan wanted to play with the guy from Marillion which is kinda odd since why would you want to have a guy who was kicked from Marillion for being too crappy when it wasn't a first-rate band in the first place, and a guy who haven't been in business since for 10 years to boot
Weirdly enough Pendragon on the other hand went through like 5 drummers but otherwise has been stable since Clive joined

see, that's what I'm talking about
when there's metallic riffage or a guitar solo I'm like, fuck yeah, that's the stuff

what I'm getting from this is that I gotta look into John Mitchell's other stuff, he's my favorite guy in the band

Sylvian isn't prog but if you're okay with other genres, he's consistently decent
he started with a band called Japan that started with a more raw punk sound but immediately developed its unique sound that incorporated more synth, Karn's fretless bass riffing, and basically out-of-the-box arrangement that peaked with Tin Drum.
his solo stuff though, is a pretty acquired taste because he preferred to have this somber, slow, atmospheric and ambient kind of sound, I think 'Pulling Punches' is his only solo song that resembled his Japan days.
then it got even weirder as we moved into his modern days (2000s) where he decided to go full minimalist, completely destroyed the usual popular song structure in a way that he'd sing these poems he wrote over random noises he made in the background.
Honestly i'd just recommend his compilation 'A Victim of Stars 1982-2012' because it's such a good compilation that picked his better songs along with his music transformation with each passing decade.
Forbidden Colours might be a bit overplayed but it is still one of his more accessible songs.

Hidden gem of 90’s Yes. Looking at the rest (Union, Talk, Open Your Eyes), you’d expect it to be equally as bad, but somehow they got their groove back
I like Homeworld’s starting riff, and even though it’s really different, Lightning Strikes is a really fun song

I believe Yes is the greatest prog band that ever was, top 3 rock bands ever atleast
No other band has had such synergy and mindboggling beauty in so many of their songs. They knew what they we’re doing and their only downfall was breaking away from their old way of writing songs in and around 1978

>>
>>124003889
The issue is that that prog metalfags notoriously suck at prog since prog metal is almost exclusively influenced by prog rock and other prog metal bands, while prog rock pulled from a wide variety of jazz, classical and folk influences.
So instead of getting their influences from the source (jazz, classical, psych rock, folk rock, etc), prog metal got these influences secondhand from prog rock bands.

when prog metal musicians try and mellow out and play regular prog rock it's always inferior to actual prog rock, and when prog metal bands don't mellow out and stick to prog metal, it's almost universally shit because they're trying to combine styles without understanding where these styles even came from and end up making shitty metal that's also shitty prog.

The only good prog metal comes from bands that understand that progressive metal isn't and shouldn't be extreme prog rock or "prog rock with distortion and growls" and plays to metal's strengths. It's why Voivod and similar bands in that prog thrash (and later some variants prog death sphere) kick ass.

Not related to prog metal but the frontman of the Flying Luttenbachers who coined brutal prog said it himself that he likes prog rock but flutes and ballads and the like doesn't really mesh with extreme music at all and it sounds forced when you try and take 60s/70s prog rock formulas and apply them to heavier and more extreme genres of music.
>>
>>124004044
Is this the same Voivod fag always shitting on Opeth and similar bands?

>prog metal got these influences secondhand from prog rock bands
Akerfeldt's favorite band is Judas Priest
>>
>>124003930
Just because you don't like them doesn't mean they are "edgy". Harsh vocals are there to match the instrumental brutality or as in Opeth's case, many of their songs are from the point of view of a demon or lost soul. You can't tell me Black Rose Immortal doesn't belong on the list of greatest prog epics just because you don't understand what they were conveying vocally and emotionally
