what do you guys chuck parallel compression onto?
is there any benefit to getting into trackers these days? I tried renoise years ago and didn't really like it. tried buzz and felt the same. just tried sunvox and it was just so irritating to use, the amount of steps you have to go through to set up a single sequence and yeah I'm very new to sunvox but this has been my experience with all trackers. do they provide a different enough workflow that it would be worth pushing through it and learning to use them or are they overhyped?
>>124056908parallel compression is one of the strongest sounding effects imo so i wonder why you couldn't hear it, but yes parallel saturation is also cool. what about envelope shaping? can it be run in parallel?
>>124057040I only used sunvox all of those years ago because it was the first time I learned how to use synths and a general gateway into DAWs, vsts, and engineering. I probably wouldn't use it today because of how tedious it is but I made many many hours of material on it. I think it requires a beginner's patience to use it
>>124057112it definitely feels like you're right. shame, it looks very cool and I'm sure a different way of doing things would have interesting results but my god it feels like you're trying to program the concept of music itself into reality with how much you have to define just to say "play a scale please" which sounds incredibly cool but to me is very much not.
>>124057070the last time i bothered including it in my autistic a/b/c's with close compression settings was years ago and it didn't occur to me that i haven't reevaluated since then, which is why i deleted because obviously that's dumb>envelope shapingwhat like shaperbox? transient shaping?i only recall doing it like once and the latency made it unusable, but there were probably other factors.the whole point of parallel compression is supposed to be that the release curve or whatever changes, so it has a measurably different sound than equivalent gain reduction against regular compression.... i don't think that's the case for envelope shaping like on shaperbox for example since you're triggering something pre-set

>>124060955I'm kinda treating that last way of doing it as a "valid but experimental" way of doing things so in all likelihood you probably just want to use shorter kicks or fade them out before the next transient.

I like ripping patches apart and taking out people's dumb logos and shit and putting better controls in. you should use Ableton. or whatever but max devices are a big plus. >>124063908ultimately yes but I think the original eq meme is about mixing, he specifically memes about highpassing at 20hz which is something you mostly do for mixing purposes. I pointed out that not having to use a weird eq means you provide haven't experimented much. I know ive often had to use bizarre eqs because of the unconventional sources I have so the fact that someone either doesn't use eq or finds complex eq to be, idk, cringe or whatever, to me, suggests a lack of curiosity.
>>124064359>Ableton lets you use max devicesAbleton lets you install max4live, which allows for max4live devices to be used within Ableton Live. Max4live only comes bundled with Live Suite, but it can be purchased separately.
>>124063897Use all of them
>>124064359i have live suite and learned to use m4l a fair amount but imo it's not worth the headache of building your sounds around instruments in it or seeking out other people's. breaking changes between versions are annoying and it's a pain in the ass to debug things. the average producer is not really ever going to do anything useful or practical with it
>>124064531steal it on the internet
>>124064635I mostly use them to fill very specific niches. I have one that takes video input and converts it to a modulation signal which is fun. I made one that just hold notes so I can set up loops and drones really fast, that sort of thing. I agree that its best to use other people's stuff. I don't have much issues with version changes, I just stick with one version. you could make amazing shit on like Ableton 8 or FL studio 11 these days so I'm fine with Ableton 11, it's good enough.

>>124063515I'm not using a daw that doesn't come with a parametric eq, I am just asking why some eqs aren't simply parametric as a standard
>>124064359>weird eqit's because somewhere in the mix, you fucked up with conflicting bands and now you are applying a dirty bandage to an infected mix. significant high and low cut filters in the mastering stage shouldn't need to be done.
>>124065390yes and the solution to having frequencies you don't want is to eq them out. what, should we synthesize everything additively so we have perfect control over every frequency? hey if you make a UI that can do that in a way that won't make me want to die I will pay you for it. >significant high and low cut filters in the mastering stage shouldn't need to be done.mastering stage I agree, mixing stage it's fine and sound design it's even finerer.
>>124065390I am genuinely curious, say your sound source is literally anything. you have no standards, they range from low quality phone recordings to wavs of synths. frequencies just everywhere. what do you actually DO to fix random frequencies being too loud? or to remove low end from high pitched stuff that doesn't need it? I'm interested in your idea but what is your preferred alternative to eq?

I'm looking for a field recorder to record found sound percussion samples from the industrial sites around me but I'm too poor to buy a handful of different models to experiment and see how their differing mic capsules colour the sound, and I can't figure a way to try-before-I-buy. I hear sounds that would be suitable for what I have in mind when I'm out and need to capture the audio as close to how it sounds to the ear as possible. Long term I should save for a binaural mic but that's years off so what should I get in the meantime do you think? Budget £150-200. I don't care about fancy extra features or anything, just how it sounds and lossless format.

reading through this thread and some of you fundamentally do not understand mastering. flat frequency response on your master will not make all of your bass sound the same volume as high frequencies because there is a natural curve to human hearing (A-weighting and C-weighting, look it up) where we are more sensitive to higher or lower frequencies than others. So, even though the graph looks flat, your perception of it is different. Also people referring to "dynamics" when we're talking about frequency domain baka

i still can't decide if i need to be running effects chains while recording such as reverbs and compressors at a minimum or just recording completely dry and applying the effects chains later. the reverb seems to help the performance somewhat if im recording guitar over drums and bass, but i always felt a compressor buss really helped tie things together and give it its own character in the mix during the recording process. thoughts?

>>124077229Are your vocals as good as hers? I'm talking about the quality. Ariana Grande has a recording process developed over years, a very specific vocal chain that is perfect for her vocals. After years of trying I still fail to reach this quality, but what helped me over the years>manual adjustments before any plugins (huge improvement of the end result in my case)>cutting, crossfades, volume adjustments, manual de-essing>first the surgical process with plugins, the musical processing comes at the end>get your signal you are going to work with as clean as possible>natural atuo tune? try to use a auto tune in series, spread the heavy lifting on several plugins>for that glossy / airy sound boost shelf at 20k or 40k kHz (there is a free plugin called Luftikus) combined with a subtle shimmer reverb>vocals should be in your face and pretty dry, so focus on your mono signal (reducing reverbs, adding a pre-delay, compressing the reverb)>your side signals can get a pretty aggressive de-essing and EQ (this keeps the overall harshness in check)>use parallel processing as much as possible, if you had done your job right at the start you can easily blend them all together with your clean signal with just the faders>try out more compressing than you usually would do (here you can mess around with compressors in series too, with different settings)With all this said, you are still lacking the talent of Ariana Grande at the mic. She is the main factor why her vocals sound so good.

>begin a project>have a vague idea in mind>start jamming to the idea>as im jamming the idea takes an entirely different trajectory>begin to mix and arrange at the same timedoes anyone else do this? i dont think it's very effective. I need to actually write these songs instead writing as im mixing, but the mixing gives me ideas for the songs as im going so i find it hard to stop.
>>124082425As long as it is basic mixing and you are in some kind of flow state I don't see any issues with that.If you are working with other people this could become a problem. This is where a template helps so can stay creative while the template takes care of 80% basic mixing issues.Proper mixing should be done with fresh ears and is a whole new process.
>>124082488yeah it's nothing fancy, im only using cubase elements and dont have third party plugins or the very little i do have i use sparingly and opt for the stock cubase plugins instead.i have a couple of templates; developed one today for the project i got to a semi-decent polished state which i was happy with, so im gonna stick to that for a little while for the noisy stuff im working on.what exactly do you mean by proper mixing? something that's going to be an official release and becoming commercially available?
>>124077829damn that's really hot.>>124082425this is how everything happens for me, I've accepted that I just can't write music, I can play it and produce it but I can't write it. its only a problem if that bothers you.
>>124082608wait does that mean i can't write music? damn i suck
>>124082519>what exactly do you mean by proper mixing? something that's going to be an official release and becoming commercially available?Yes. Getting your mix to a level ready for mastering (if you are an amateur like me mastering means simply getting the song ready for uploading to streaming sites).Your production should be basically finished so no major changes are happening while mixing, for example major changes in arrangement or switching out sounds. I even seperate these processes with different templates. I have a sound design / sample making template, I have a production template and I have a mixing template. This forces me to commit, if I bounce my production into stems and load up into my mixing template I'm more focused on mixing, instead of messing around again with sound design, adjusting reverbs, trying out new kicks and so on.
>>124082761makes sense. thanks for the insight anon. always nice to get a different perspective on things here. this is my problem, after i have begun mixing, i also start to investigate different sounds and this clearly inteferes with the mix and thus the song idea changes, the arrangement changes. it's a messy process and ive gotta find a way to commit like you have.
>>124082618I imagine that, like me, if you really try and stop yourself from going off on tangents, you could write music. it seems like that's not how your brain wants to interact with music so it's not what comes naturally. you can definitely develop that into writing if you want to. you just have to not do all the cool things your brain is suggesting to you. for me that makes the whole process such a pain that I don't want to do it so I don't bother.
>>124082820tb h for the past for few years my brother and i never really "wrote" things, we would usually just record 40 minute psychedelic/post rock jams and call it a day, but nothing ever set in stone. i think i got very used to this workflow, letting the music inform in real time rather than having a goal.>you just have to not do all the cool things your brain is suggesting to youyeah pretty much this. a studio provides a lot of possibilities and opportunities that can be somewhat counter-productive if not managed correctly.
>>124081001>Haha that gave me a chuckle, cheers. What in particular is giving off the deepest 'royalty free' vibes anon?I think the main synth patch, as well as the way it's structured, just makes me think of background music to a tutorial. How do i get better at bass production? I like working with 808s mainly. I just get a nice sounding one shot, plop down a melody in piano roll al call it a day. All my tracks have shitty bass, so whats the trick? I tried layering, no desirable results. Id like the bassline to really pop out, but boosting the volume just distorts it. I was wondering, maybe i should completely free up the mid freq just so the bass can take it up? And use the high freq for all other elements? Idk im out of ideas really.
>>1240858353rd harmonic strong wave as the base of your sound.Nothing else clogging up that spot. (kick higher and not subheavy if you want the bass to "pop" and carry)You can distort or add slight noise to it but that's just icing on the cake, same goes for layering.

whats the point of having multiple plugin interfaces? just standardise it. manufacturing cross-compatibility issues is such a fucking capitalist meme. it's like having multiple usb connectors and having to buy adapters just for one cable. such horseshit practices based on the idea of a "competitive free market". it's just gatekeep people out of certain interests and activities so the elites can control the media landscape indefinitely; make education a tedious and frustrating experience and no one will want to learn. you get a nullified working class who lack the awareness of their social stratification, and the oppressive institutions which put them there and the elite continue to reap all the benefits.
