>Do you browse classicstoday for recordings, btw?

I very often reference their reviews, yeah, and when new to a work I would often search it on the site and look through and listen to their highest rated and reference recordings. It's not the only resource I use -- of course I ask here, look through Amazon reviews and ratings, other review sites/surveys -- but I do use it quite often. For example, regarding Mahler 3, they love both recordings mentioned here >>124258907. Granted, I listened to the Kubelik because of recommendations here, but the Litton I wouldn't have if not for getting a 10/10 on classicstoday, at least not for a long time.

Also, random, but you greatly remind me of myself when I first started browsing this general at the start of this year. Similar writing style, asking many of the same questions I did, using YouTube Music (which I, of course, still do), discovering the same music I did, and so on. All that's left is for you to become obsessed with Mahler, and to a lesser extent Bruckner and Brahms.

it’s crazy to think that we used to live in a world where the franck d minor was a popular, regularly programmed symphony; now no one remembers it exists at all. same with his piano quintet, symphonic variations, and string quartet; really, his violin sonata in his only work that has survived relatively unscathed.

>to become obsessed with Mahler
I like 2nd especially the andante, 6th drags a bit too much and I still have to get into the rest properly, but I don't think I'll ever be as obsessed lol. I like Brahms 4th as much as you do.

Hey, it didn't for me at first either, but once it did... man completed the symphony. Or maybe not, I just really like sharing the joy of his music with others.

>>124259147
NTA but enjoy!

>>124259114
It gets kind of old after a few listens, imo. Maybe I'll give it a listen myself today. That violin sonata though, one of the all-time greatest, listening to it is like witnessing a miracle.
>>
>>124259128
that’s because there’s no fooling necessary, it’s simple facts that you know more about reddit than i do, schizophrenic garbagejeet.
>>124259165
i don’t think anything about it gets “old” compared to any other major symphony, and the other chamber works are too rarely played to ever get old.
>>
>>124259190
Hey, I said in my opinion. All I know is I really loved it at first but on subsequent listens I began to like it less and less until I no longer really cared for it. Maybe I overplayed it or just wasn't in the mood for it, so I'm revisiting it now (Muti). It's still a work I would wholeheartedly recommend to others, I'm just saying I get why it fell out of popularity.
>>
>>124259190
>>124259223
But you're right, I was probably being too negative, so I take back what I said.

Not to sound like a fanboy or whatever, but they've actually helped me a ton in my time here, from an abundance of recommendations on just about every work you can think of to illuminating the technical and emotional nuances of said music to explaining basic to more advanced concepts regarding music theory and the artform in general.

he actually did write quite a bit of music, but his early works are typically neglected in favor of his later ones which are also at this point neglected. aside from the chamber and orchestral works i mentioned, i neglected to name the 2 big piano pieces of his late era: the prelude, chorale and fugue, and the prelude, aria and finale.

Kubelik's Mahler will always be near and dear to my heart, but the sound quality on almost the entire cycle (the 1st, 8th, and 9th excluded) for both Audite and DG, each for their own reasons, sadly takes it out of the selected recordings for active listening for me when there are so many other great recordings of each work nowadays. I suppose if you really need his quick tempo approach with taut, warm playing.

no it is bad, the tempo is something only a beginner would play it at and it ruins the rhythmic character of the piece by obscuring it with such dogshit pacing and shoddy finger work. he simply does not accentuate the repeated notes enough and his dynamics are lacking. it requires verve. it is a virtuoso piece, not something to be played by those with lesser skills like Wim

Here it is. The moment. The peak. The finale. The epitome. Your chariot has arrived at the point of no return, you are now forever scarred, you are cursed with this theophany. Your body no longer responds to your command, for Wagner has taken control. Only "He" decides what is right and wrong, he is the judge, jury, adjudicator and executioner. No amount of pussies you fuck, no amount of drugs you indulge yourself in, will make you forget this Dionysian delirium. You have been castrated, both physically and spiritually. How do "we" the victims of a brutish rape comfort ourselves? How do we release ourselves from these chains? Wagner has squeezed himself inside you. You have no name or identity, you had abandoned these trivialities once your ears graced those french horns and imploding sound waves. Wagner. That is all. That is everything.

>>
>>124262718
I'd like to live in a universe where naming classical works, at least symphonies and anything else of a grand scale, is common practice within the tradition.
>>
>>124262785
i’d like to live in a universe where retarded nicknames aren’t arbitrarily handed out willy nilly with no regard for the composer’s intentions.
>>
>>124262866
I mean that's what a nickname is, a name applied by others, and it's the kind of thing that just happens. Very rarely as well. In my aforementioned universe, that kind of thing would never happen because with an official title, there'd be no room for nicknames.
>>
>>124262949
>I mean that's what a nickname is, a name applied by others
untrue. nicknames were applied by the composer (beethoven’s eroica and pastoral, bruckner’s romantic), everything else is, at best, ad hoc slang.
>In my aforementioned universe, that kind of thing would never happen because with an official title, there'd be no room for nicknames.
or maybe consider the idea that composers were deliberate and thoughtful with the works that they decided to give nicknames.
>>
>>124262993
That isn't crossing into official title territory?
>>
>>124263034
Yes absolutely. Nicknames are given by other people otherwise it's a title the composer chose for their own work
>>
>>124263034
to me, any programmatic title for a piece of absolute music given by the composer is a nickname. everything else is just an illegitimate farce.
>>
>>124263120
Well, in any case I get your beef, an unofficial nickname can create undesirable, misguided preconceptions of a work and its emotional tone and dramatic content.
>>
>>124263120
That isn't a nickname, that's a name chosen by the composer. Nickname's are unofficial names applied by others like "Tragic" for Mahler's 6th Symphony.

>Previous releases from the New York-based Escher Quartet include an acclaimed set of Mendelsohn's six string quartets as well as an album with works by Dvorák, Tchaikovsky and Borodin. For their latest offering the members have looked closer to home, however, choosing to combine the quartets by Samuel Barber and Charles Ives. The disc opens with Barber's String Quartet in B minor, containing the music for which the composer remains best-known: the second movement which he two years later expanded into Adagio for Strings. Recognizing it's potential already while composing it, Barber described the piece as 'a knock-out' - which made it all the more difficult to come up with a third movement worthy to follow it. In the end he decided to make the quartet a two-movement work, but the Eschers have here included the lively third movement that the composer discarded, offering the opportunity to hear the work as it was once planned. Barber is followed by the two full-scale quartets by Charles Ives, as well as a brief Scherzo. Like many other compositions by Ives, his First Quartet makes extensive use of revival and gospel hymns, quoting them in all four movements in a highly accessible tonal idiom. Far more challenging, the Second Quartet is a portrayal of 'four men / who converse, discuss, argue... fight, shake hands, shut up / then walk up the mountainside to view the firmament' - a programme which invites a liberal use of dissonance, but also - towards the end - a particularly fulfilling resolution.

Gonna have to check out their Mendelssohn.

I'm not up on this, is the argument that most play Beethoven too slow?
>>
>>124266698
Too fast, actually. The whole theory of double beat is that Czerny and Beethoven thought the left right movement of the pendulum on the metronome marked the beat, not the ticks. Basically meaning that two ticks make a beat. And nobody ever corrected Beethoven on it, and everyone in that era fully agreed and went along with this practice but magically stopped once recording technology came into place.

the fundamental problem with that is that fugues already have their own built in device for tonic-dominant opposition (subject and answer), whereas sonata form is built on this opposition being between the two (or more) themes of the movement. in other words, combining the two would be a contrivance.

>what work are you referring to? brahms almost never wrote fugues outside of the german requiem, he basically exclusively preferred canon.
I will admit that I took the answer from ChatGPT lmao
Here is what it says:

Yes, Brahms does incorporate fugue-like passages in his Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34, though he doesn’t use strict fugues in the traditional sense. The work is filled with counterpoint, and you’ll find several sections that employ fugal techniques, particularly in the last movement.

In the fourth movement (Finale), Brahms introduces a theme that undergoes fugal treatment, with different voices entering sequentially and imitating the theme in a fugato style. This movement builds in complexity as the voices overlap and interact in a way that recalls the fugue structure, though it doesn’t follow a rigid fugue form all the way through.

Brahms often used fugal writing to heighten intensity and bring a sense of rigor to his compositions. This use of counterpoint is one reason the Piano Quintet feels so intense and intricate, balancing classical structure with Romantic expression.
>>
Any good Beethoven recordings on a fortepiano? I like the more homely sound it has but I dislike the usual HIPster style of performance that it has.

Otherwise, upright piano recordings are fine too. I just like to hear Beethoven's sonatas in the context that they'd actually be played in. Not on a fancy modern grand only really usable in a concert scenario and requires a entire room if you have it in your house.

Brahms – Piano Quintet in F Minor, Op. 34 (finale): Brahms combines fugue and sonata forms throughout his works. The final movement of the Piano Quintet features fugal passages within a sonata structure, merging thematic development with counterpoint.

surprisingly, yes: ronald brautigam did a full cycle of both the sonatas and the variations/bagatelles/minor works. he plays in a totally traditional style on a fortepiano and his results are compelling enough to challenge the classics. it’s pretty fucking impressive.

it’s so funny thinking about that guy from a few days ago bragging about how AI could write brahms’ 5th symphony if it was “trained on the same dataset as him”, meanwhile it’s unable to differentiate between fugues as a form and fugal writing as a contrapuntal style; not to mention the original question was literally asking the inverse: for sonata structure applied to a fugue, rather than fugal writing within a sonata structure (of which there is plenty dating back to haydn and mozart)
