>>127627462
The drums sound like complete ass in the mix, it sounds like something an AI would generate. I would use midi drums as a placeholder if you can't record real drums properly, whatever you're using right now isn't working out.

>>127627820

i find the mix is too muddy if i dont apply a slight high boost to the overall mix
>>
After spending a long time on ableton then getting logic on iPad, I’m enjoying it so far playing round but haven’t made anything. Logic holds your hand more, gives you better sounds by far, ableton is more blank page
>>
>>127627887
it's not *wrong* to eq your final mix, but if that's something that consistently happens and or you're just working on the track, aware of the mud, you're 100% just being lazy.
that laziness is very likely to be bleeding onto the rest of your output.
>>
>>127627942
if its not wrong then how am i being lazy? aren't i solving the problem?
>>
On a side note, have you guys seen the interview with David Gilmour? 2 hours long but super interesting as they only talk about the craft of making music and engineering etc. and not the usual talks about the breakup drama etc.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OT_KFCidz_s
>>
>>127627960
it is not *theoretically* wrong

you are accustomed to boosting the highs of *everything* rather than learning how to mix in such a way that you're getting enough highs from the start, or otherwise contemplating why this is happening in the first place. that is lazy.
>>
>>127627991

>>
>>127627942
Meh. You're trying too hard to be that guy. EQ on the master is lazy, sure, but if you don't suck at mixing it'll work just fine. It's often necessary because if you start by lasering in on details, youll often end up with something that's well balanced but doesn't quite have the right overall profile.
>>
>>127631893
> Meh. You're trying too hard to be that guy
i was restraining myself from calling him deaf and dumb actually.
how hard is it to work backwards in this situation:
>”fuck that anon! i’m going to EQ the master!”
>*adds 6db shelf at 4k*
>* self doubt* “what is… changing here..?”
>”was it my kick drum that needed that boost or was it my piano? is something in particular easier to hear now..?”
>”what if i tried instead to eq..”
>”haha just kidding! idc!” *exports and repeat*
come on

> but if you don't suck at mixing it'll work just fine
see that’s really part of a larger problem. that guy sucks at mixing.
“that’s not technically wrong ;)” advice really only helps people who already know what they’re doing.
telling people who don’t know what they’re doing to do things the “right” way is like a guard rail to guide them into actually learning what they’re doing so they can circle back and get good enough to bend those rules.
>>
>>127630983
Just weak melody and drums imo. Nothing satisfying or tension building about the first track. Keep at it though man
>>
>>127631880
just got my hand on ozone, so take this as a rough guide:
Ozone mastering chain: subtle low and high shelf EQ -> light expansion on lows and highs -> stereo imaging(mono on bass, stereo on high mids and highs) -> clarity(resonance control) -> stabilizer(tonal balance/frequency correction) -> subtle dynamic EQ on mids and highs -> maximizer with transient emphasis.
Very subtle high air -> glue compression at -1.2db -> limiter.
>>
>>127629070
Cool stuff but I would say a bit too much processing on the vocals. Sounds like you are stacking OTTs or something. I like how wide it sounds though.
>>
>>127632541
thanks anon. yeah, i'm using soundtoys' microshift on some of the vocals. i'll definitely tone it down a bit. appreciate the listen. i also have to tone down that bell sound IMO, it's part of the sample and i'm trying to lessen it's resonance. will probably change a few of the synth leads, move stuff around etc.

I wanted to see how banjo works in a "hyperpop" context. It works and the whistle tone (sine wave) works to wrap the mix up with a wide reverb. I like it and I'll work to get this shit up to portfolio standards.

Omnisphere is so nuts man, people who think it's just a rompler are dumb. It has Virtual Analog oscillators for a lot of the best sounding synths out there which were made in collab with the people in charge like Dave Smith. still, max/msp and ppooll are incredibly hard to get into, let alone to do anything listenable with them. there are barely any user friendly resources online on them, and those programs are 100 times more complex than, say, ableton
>>
>>127637104
actually not that hard, they have a dedicated discord and also uploaded some tutorials last year for ppooll specifically. some guy on the discord walked me through getting used to ppooll via screen share. they're all very helpful over there.
>>
i looked up everywhere but i still dont understand it how the fuck do i get midi out of any sample. they make it look so easy on ableton. is it a brainlet problem for fl. whenever i pitch sample and send midi to something its nowhere like that.

also ppoll isn't any more complex than ableton, like 50% of the interface is fluff and it just kinda looks impenetrable cause the ui is 2000s tier

Even the most budget tier monitor speakers will improve your mixes, you dont need big, 2000 dollars elac monitors to produce professional mixes.

>Ezdrummer, I return my old friend

for mixing/mastering practice.
https://vocaroo.com/11xx5QbMONsU
What are the best practices when using the master?

Nothing on master and compressing the other channels more so touching the master is unneeded? for balance is best practice right?
Leave master level at 0 db and mix up/down what you have so it's balanced for the most part?

Ever put something on the master or just balancing lanes is better?

Let's say that the master track has a limiter on it to keep everything from clipping. But if the limiter was not there, the track would clip in spots.

Is this a problem? or is this really not a problem because the limiter is doing it's job?
>>
Macbook air m4 13" is currently on sale for 899

good idea to pick it up?
it should run ableton no problem right
>>
>>127643567
>it should run ableton no problem right
Shouldnt have any problem, 16 gig ram is a bit on the small side depending on how large your projects are and if you're using alot of kontakt libraries, (think movie/tv scoring or studio session tracking). But if it's just making beats and songs and stuff it should be enough.
>>
>>127643699
My biggest project has 40ish tracks
Aight
>>
>>127643567
The Air can't really get too hot for obvious reasons so if you tend to max out your CPU for extended periods of time you'll have it throttle more than you might be anticipating, and you'll have to freeze/bounce your tracks.
The M4 is pretty good, so this might actually never happen, depending on what you do, but it's something to keep in mind.

>256gb
Depending on your usage, you might need to keep an SSD connected to it at all times.

If you're ok with these two issues, it should be perfectly fine for music production.
>>
>>127643703
It depends on what's on the tracks.
Hundreds of light ones (like just samples being read from the drive, or small synths) can take less RAM than just a couple of heavy ones (like giant multisampled libraries).
>>
>>127643567
>it should run ableton no problem right

why shouldnt you clip your drums all the time, say in a drum group?
>>
>>127645101
Sometimes the decay is the same level as the attack so you’re flattening a lot of the drum, is a guess, but you may as well try it every time
>>
>>127645097
very cool

>>127645101
because some are already clipped or sound worse with it.
doing so may alter how more compression/distortion etc down the line interacts

it's a balancing act across how much you add on individual drums, then your busses...
shit's like cooking. little by little as you go, can't do it all in one stage etc

Yes it’s great for cinematic music. You could have no arms and still make a great soundtrack with it, also it has a great sampler if you can be bothered, but no one can be including myself
>>
>>127647468

WAT indeed. First, Reaper thinks you're using ASIO, but that NeuralDSP control panel says that ASIO isn't active.

Second, why are you showing us a DirectX control panel if you're trying to use ASIO? ASIO skips DirectX subsystem

I think some more manual-reading might be in order for you, your glitches could be some sort of ASIO fuckery and you might need to trace this from start to end to find where the misconfig is
>>
>>127647468
>>127648157

Also, your buffer size in the NeuralDSP control panel is 16 samples, depending on your computer hardware that might be too small, try increasing it to test, it will add more latency but that's the balancing act we play
>>
>>127645101
Because transient dynamics are important for certain sounds. Everyone has been clipping drums and the mix for years in search of loudness and it makes music sound worse on the whole. Then you want to make your mix more dynamic and you try to restore them with expanders.

There are a bunch of "loudness war" examples on old youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEFyNdB13vg

You shouldn't always clip or not clip your drums but do what helps the mix. Sometimes those transients are needed to make a song feel alive and in some genres they're fine to clip

Thanks m8 now it just werks. Changed to the usb 3.2 port from the 2.0, disabled power saving on the usb ports on device manager, changed buffer size to 128. Ring mod glitch gone, and surprisingly the latency wasn't that bad at 128; the latency was really annoying me before hence I set it at 16. Probably changing the USB port was the one that helped a lot.

i made 70 songs in the past year
How do I turn those 70 songs into 10-15 good songs so that I can make a decent album?
Like, how do I make the selections for those that have potential? Lets say 20. Then out of those 20 i work on them more, enchancing them, figuring out the weaknesses and what they lack, maybe reworking stuff. Then out of those i select the final 10-15 songs. Is that a good plan? Or is there something else im missing?

>Like, how do I make the selections for those that have potential?

anon???

no really: if you're starting out already not having an idea of some sort of through-line, a concept, or *something* to work with, then it's just going to be a random collection of songs.
*for me* patterns just become apparent. for others, they write groups of songs to that point.
if your songs aren't that formed yet, maybe you should come up with a concept and develop them all more to fit it.
>>
>>127658609
well i obviously want my albumnt to be a coherent group of songs but when i made those songs i didn't have an idea in mind, i just go with the flow and figure something out on the way. that's why there are many genres in those 70 songs and a lot of them sound different than each other. I will try to figure out what's the recurring theme and then see what songs fit them.
Also, I have trouble thinking in concepts, especially for electronic music. Like, what concept could there even be? They are abstract music mostly, most of it doesnt even have vocals or lyrics. You mean the concept like some message or situation the album is describing? Like the story behind it? I could work with that and figure something out
But how do I make the songs i finished months ago better? Usually when i feel like they are finished i dont touch them anymore thats why i have no idea what to do
>>
>>127653095
that's really cool thanks for breaking it down
did a little test: https://vocaroo.com/1JvmeWFZunpa
>>
>>127658664
concept isn't inherently about narrative; i use that word specifically to speak to artistic presentation. style/aesthetic is the big one, of course, but it can also be as specific as "these are all drums with autistic focus on the drums" "me studying this style of harmony..." etc (a.g cook style), or as vague as "sad songs."
if your music is "abstract" the common thing may just be the sound palette that you use.
i would throw out OPN as an example where the songs can all be pretty whacked out but there's an obviously audible style, and there are small consistent details imparted onto pre-existing compositions (e.g all the vocals are processed one way, it's consistently produced to be "lo-fi and dreamy" a lot of analog, a lot of in your face retro-digital sounds etc).

if the songs are finished then maybe you need to un-bake and re-produce them to fit together more cohesively. or not. i haven't heard them. idk.

BPM is a bit low for Trance, but it does have a trance-y feel to it. Doesn't really sound Deep House though. It's probably closer to Melodic House. The issue though is that feels a bit too disjointed, like there's too much going on, too many different sounds, and they aren't fitting together that well, especially the first half. It's not that they couldn't work together... they just aren't right now. I like from ~1:50 to the end though, but that weird noise is kind of harsh to listen to.

I'll make two different tracks recycling the same drums, one similar to your ref track(I wanna try some brass), and a second for what I was going for at first(sidechained/gated chords): https://youtu.be/qKsVoTOSbuE?si=f5wfK8aNMJ99qjX9&t=61

>>127670237
better than that: put the track you wanna cover into the ableton project and analyze the different parts. then use those relationships as a guideline. fuck it, use the same chords if you wanna.

i found that to be a more fulfilling, experimental, and educational way to play with ableton. and that way, there's no way for your anything you do to be "wrong" because it's still mostly original

All the various sub-genres are a pain in the ass, ESPECIALLY for House... but in my mind, generally at least, Melodic and Progressive House are basically Trance, but at a slower BPM (120-130) with less filler and much more subtle build/release structures.

>>127672289
To add, if you want that effect yourself, just record your guitar.
Copy it into two tracks.
Take on guitar, run it through an amp sim plugin.
Take the other track, pitch it up an octave, run it through an amp sim plugin.
For that extra chorusy sound, take one of them and put it 20ms behind the other.
>>

no it's not. it's just every amp's standard octave up stock effect. hsd that on my line 6, on my vox... always sounds weird like this. definitely nothing as fancy as two separate guitar recordings
>>

It was recorded in the 1980s. Amps didnt have that function back then, most likely just guitar into a splitter, one into one amp, another into a octave pedal into another amp.

No you're right. There's some short slapback reverb/delay on both and they're slightly out of time with each other (probably to create as wide of an effect as possible) so it sounds kinda chorusy.

i don't know what you''re doing but amp sims are widely available too and you don't need a clone to get a similar sound, though you will need a lot more to get an exact sound.

was winger that good?
>>
>>127673325
well, i can't name a single song by then. i just meant that their songwriting and sound is clearly influenced by their contemporaries and trend chasing (i'd assume) (like the aforementioned van halen).
with the trappings of that, one can assume a lot about how they were produced- even if they're not well documented themselves, you'll get similar, if not better information looking up any of their contemporaries.

>buzzing sound on the left ear cup of headphones when there's subbass
any fix or is it owari da

Their most famous song is probably 17:

I also like motley crue more.
I haven't listened to much winger, but i think this is their best song: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=CDUxmRBWncE

Intro is still
Too long get rid of 2 - 4 bars (I think I counted 10 in the beginning)

The drumbeats feel
A little ahead of the beat, which clashes with the laidback keys

Just keep producing stuff. You can put stuff up in Bandcamp and Spotify if you want to use it as a portfolio.

Like ten years ago I bought a couple stacks of lightscribe CDs thinking I would make a mini album or something and print them myself... never did anything (._. )
If I purchase your album, will the money find its way to you? lol
Perhaps this holiday season...
Just talking to myself. hitorigoto.desu.

>>
>>127675859
Shoot, I was thinking it would be worth it for all your vocaroos that I have saved. Someday you're gonna make it. I just know it.
>>
>>127676016
lol thanks, but genuinely you should bet on a mental breakdown before "makes it."
>>
i use the exact same harmor sample in every song
>>
why do none of the stock Ableton synth presets sound good
>>
>>127676136
I hope not. When I think of making it, I think of making it spiritually. Continuing to have your music out there resonating with people. It's all part of the keikaku.
>>
>>127676510
yeah same. that's a pretty reasonable goal
>>
goodnight bros we will make more bangers tomorrow

>it's trending
yours sure as fuck isn't, and if it does it's not gonna be on your lazy done-to-death visuals, it will be from anon's WIP that you stole from these threads. maybe take another 3 year break until you think of some original ideas.

Good on you, I hate stacking. I know what it's supposed to do, but every time I've ever had it done for me or tried doing it, I never like it, without exception. I think the only time it makes sense is for shit like Nirvana when it's a production choice and not an engineering trick. And if I'm not performing the take closely enough, what does that mean? That you can hear it? So the point is to *not* hear it? So then how about just not doing it?! What am I missing
