I am not a Les Paul guy but if I were to get one it’d be a tough choice between white or a gold top. Not too into the bursts or the black and I think the fancy veneers and the colorful colors like reds and blues and greens are just too gaudy looking. White (especially aged white) and gold tops both just look so good.

>>
>>128099044
People just like to delude themselves that junk planks are "just as good" and the other end pretends that $2k or more for what is ultimately cheap wood and metal isn’t an utter waste. Mid ranged guitar + a great amp is king.
>>
>>128098876
>>128098813
yeah i'm hoping so: machines threads and custom cnc stainless to fretboard radius and neck carve. normally i don't care about finish wear but i don't want the neck to feel bumpy around the 2nd fret. i had a guitar with a dent there once and it drove me insane
also nice game lol. never played that one but i liked the gba era
>>
>>128099099
The real key to sounding great is being a great guitar player. That's what no one wants to address. Eddie Van Halen's original guitar was pieced together from spare parts, a parts caster. The pickup was an original PAF and his amp was a good Marshall but he built the guitar himself. Slash recorded his best work on fake Gibson Les Paul that were built by Chris Derrig. Very few legendary guitar players made their best music with expensive gear.
>>
>>128099044
i saw this exact thing with p bass pickups like stock vs custom. dude was playing on a $1200 aguilar head with a lot of drive and compression. of course it's going to sound great
>>
>>128099141
Anything will sound great through pro level amplification and then mixed afterwards. YouTube has become too centered on providing a career to people and that's why it's not inspiring anymore unless you find someone who isn't trying to hawk products and be a whore for brands.
>>
Does bass even need a top end amp for recording? Darkglass or whatever mid hardware is probably good enough to lay down strong tracks.
>>
>>128099150
so true
>mixed afterwards
this shit is really unfortunately when listening to solo acoustic guitar stuff. it's like damn why doesn't my guitar sound that good? oh yeah it's post-processed
>>
>>128099161
no not for recording. a p bass with flats plugged direct is about as good as it gets for tone.

You're definitely allowed to, but maybe examine the why behind your purchases. I know of a guy with a very nice LP Custom he bought almost 9 years ago, and to my knowledge that's been his only guitar outside of two that were gifted to him. I'm not saying only buy one guitar ever, but that contentedness is a real virtue.

Here's a little low gain tone demo of the guitar with a neural mkIIc+ plugin. It's a JB/59 set so it sounds like any other set, but the 1500 floyd is very nice, a lot smoother and quieter than a 1000. I was doing some van halen earlier and it played awesome. The neck and fretboard are so slick it's like effortless to play compared to anything else I've owned and I've had 2 other charvels.

I’ll let you know. I haven’t even plugged the cab in yet and probably won’t until the stadium arrives. I live in a townhouse and the neighbors are elderly. >>128103285
Also forgot to mention that the dude at guitar center who sold the guitar to me plugged it into a 5150 III so that’ll be a good reference point for in the room toan. Maybe I’ll take the whole rig down there and see if they want to a/b it.

My current signal chain is
GE-7 -> BD-2 -> bass combo amp (an old 1x10" Carlsbro one)
and for recording I do
GE-7 -> BD-2 -> audio interface -> bass amp/cab sim in Helix Native -> reverb plugins (my favorite so far is Arturia Rev PLATE-140)

I wanted to keep everything as basic and analog as possible/reasonable, but at this point it's 100% clear that a reverb is absolutely essential for the stuff I'm currently working on.
Plate/hall reverb pedals are inherently digital. I also want a universal solution in a compact box for playing into amps, direct to PA and recording. I was thinking about SansAmps and the like, but so far I haven't seen an analog preamp that fits my use cases well enough to not additionally need another utility box or two.

So...
RV-6 + IR-2 (~$370 + $150-200 for an isolated power supply because daisy chaining will become too noisy)?
Or should simply completely surrender to digital and get a GX-10 (also ~$370)?

Kinda fucking dumb question with no easy answers but anyway - I've started playing guitar at 31 years old. Been playing a few months alone and will start lessons soonish. Playing 30-120 mins a day. I don't think I'm completely hopeless, so what might I be looking after a year of playing, skillwise? Like should I reach something where some simple rock is quite easy, and its not just a complete struggle session erry time?

You could get really good in a year with enough practice. Maybe not shred level but definitely able to play most famous rock songs.

Most "simple rock" is piss easy, you'll be playing them in no time with regular practice

Babymetal I have an opinion, I'm less knowledgeable on Band-Maid, I suppose they're the same thing more or less.
They're typically Japanese things. They're groups for the girls themselves and less for the novelty of them. For instance, I mean the girls that went to become idols wanted to be famous and shit. So they got into the business and did that and it worked for them, so okay. What's cool is as a human experience I guess it's good for them, it exposes them to cultures, it makes them travel, it earns them a living, the music is alright if people enjoy it. I don't give a shit that Babymetal don't listen to metal.
Same thing when I meet a swiftie, like yeah good for you I don't mind Taylor Swift, the girl is like "same, I guess heavy metal is okay". And we chat and it's a nice experience. For the idol groups it's likely the same nice experience meeting people and vibing, and in the end it's raw culture not superficial dick-measuring contests and shit. Mostly from the fact it's a typical Japanese thing, it wouldn't work here.
>>
>>128104621
Yeah, "enough pratice" ofc doing a lot of heavy lifting. I'm having fun so far, but I'm not exactly teenager hyper focused on playing favourite bands random solos for hours a day. But I figure that consnistency and haivng some experience in "how to learn things" migh do some work.

>>

Well what level do you wanna reach then? Either way, a year of consistent practice would get you pretty far.
>>
>>128104686
Classic rock music is one of the hardest genres to play. Try to play back in black all the way through, or anything in the zeppelin catalog. Even the simple songs like you ain’t seen nothing yet or Steve miller stuff is pretty complex when you get into all the rhythms, techniques and time signatures involved. Metal is far easier to grasp because it’s usually simpler chord progressions and power chords over complex voicings and barre chords. Enter sandman for instance is a very simple song in comparison to heartbreaker or even Rolling Stones stuff.
>>
>>128104995
wrong
>>
>>128105013
Not wrong. You can’t play back in black from start to finish with the solo. But I bet you can play a Metallica song start to finish.

Play something like ZZ top, some easier Judas priest stuff. Maybe some Santana, stuff like that. Able to improvise, without sounding like I'm some old wanker playing 3 blues licks over and over. Maybe one day learn to shred a bit but its not really important, but just so I can say I can.0kk02

>>128105022
I was learning Santana by ear with my teacher on my first or second year I think. Was fun. You'll definitely be able to play those with practice. Improvising too I think. Just gotta learn your scales and learn enough solos to get a bunch of different licks under your belt.

ZZ Top is one of the most difficult bands to cover. Like you want him to learn advanced finger picking, hybrid picking, muting, bends and vibrato, slide, and artificial harmonics in the first year? Just because it sounds easy to you doesn’t make it easy. Santana is chicken shit compared to gibbons.

I thought the same thing at one point but have seen substantial results in just 3 months. The thing about guitar is that there are a lot of crutches you can use to overcome physical limitations to your playing. Can’t hold the pick? Play finger style. Barre chords? Play in open tuning.
>>
>>128106585
>>play it right one time, fuck it up in different ways each time after that
Don't think about the mistakes, take a breath, reset and try it again and slow down the tempo to make it easier(you better be using a metronome) not until you can play it perfectly but until you forget how to play it wrong.

>>128105432
Lol if I saw this earlier I actually would have. Too late to play now. But please, enlighten me what's so difficult about it. The main riff is easy as fuck, chorus as well. Solo is pretty easy too, basically just pentatonic noodling. The hardest part is the break runs after the chorus right after the solo and even that's easy once you get the hang of it. So please, what is so hard about that song?

>>128105441
It seems like that at first but it's truly the only way. You gotta get your fingers acquainted with what they need to play and you can only do that playing slow. Once you're familiar with what notes to play, then you can start speeding up. And I'll agree with you on that, sometimes I'm struggling to play something then the next day I can play it great. It's weird.

>>128105552
It's just pentatonic wankery, it's really not that hard. It sounds great don't get me wrong but it's nothing difficult.

I am having a real hard time improving my hybrid picking. I can play with a pick just fine and have played with just my fingers for longer than I’ve played with a pick, but combining the two together is just something I have a hard time doing. Picking downward with a pick between my thumb and index while also picking with my middle and ring just feels weird, it doesn’t feel anywhere near as comfortable as just playing with my thumb and fingers together without any pick

Why don’t you just try a thumb pick
>>
>>128108191
I just bought a couple last week but forgot them in my cup holder in my car, thanks for reminding me. I need give them a shot. I have terrible pick holding technique in that I don’t really hold the pick perfectly sideways in the center of my thumb with just one finger like you’re supposed to, my picks are always more toward the front of the pad of my thumb and are more of a 45° angle instead of a straight 90° in my thumb and I use both my index and middle on the pick (probably a big part of why hybrid picking with my middle off of the pick feels so weird). Thumb picks orient the pick the way they’re supposed to be oriented which isn’t how I hold them so it’ll take getting used to. Terrible technique but that’s how I’ve played with picks for 10+ years, before that I just used my fingers. It’s hard to break the habit of bad technique when it’s deeply engrained
>>
>>128108269
I totally understand because I had the same problem. You’ll get used to them in a few days though, the only problem with them is they fall off on upstrokes if they aren’t supported with the index finger but I don’t think there’s a lot of thumb upstrokes in fingerstyle. Godspeed anon

Not really the best modern guitarist per se but probably as the last popular culture guitar hero. Like the proper monoculture of the old before people were atomized by the internet. The machine has changed since then - look at how the industry has pivoted towards the internet for bulk of their sales/streaming/marketing as a gauge of success for pop stars. Someone with 10 million streams and popular to a specific age group may be a total unknown to someone in a slightly different age group but same geographic location because a lot of the internetz music is consumed in isolation. Whereas before if there was a hit, it'd be everywhere and you can't help but hear it because most media came topstream via tv and radio with little choice from the consumer.

>>128108178
Sans getting a proper teacher, observe the right hand mechanics of scary hybrid pickers. I don't know much but maybe they're the country players. Though personally I'm leaning into Anton Oparin's principle that there must be a universal proper right hand technique (that of course he sells courses for) with a clip of an olympic swim race looking like synchronized swimmers (who are even built similarly, see sprinters for a different case) due to scientific optimization; probably someone as large as Greg Koch (6'7") might find a more efficient hybrid picking approach that works for him compared to people a foot shorter.

What I do get from observation is that he's more of a wrist player with minimal thumb + index movement; keeps motions identical for efficiency and it's less taxing for the brain. He also supports his index with his middle finger when holding the pick for extra stability.

You can still relearn proper habits, I removed my anchoring pinky some years back. Rethinking my picking recently with Oparin's approach in mind.
Personally I use the ring finger when doing hybrid as well, but T I M R sans pick.

Thanks for reading my blog.

The rosewood one still gets played and isn’t going anywhere but the CS one just feels like my guitar if that makes sense, playing it is effortless. The rosewood one is more of a “I’ve dreamt about this since I was 15 and could never afford it until now and now that I can I’m not going to let it slip away” guitar

Custom? $4k seems fair
Standard? ~$2k
Studio? Nah, only if it has dot inlays; then ~$1k

$0 unless it was a Special then $2k max

I’m willing to pay $5000 for a guitar I really like. I don’t really like Les Paul’s though so like $600 maybe

none of my guitars has been more than $400 so I guess about that
