Bros I'm confused about chord inversions.

So a drop 2 is not dropping the 2nd interval, but dropping the 5th??

Definitely been playing my SG quite a bit more. I really like how much more chim it has and it's really fun for caveman riffs in drop D. A lot closer to what I'm used to with offsets. LP is still great though and I've been playing it more than my Jag and JM's lately.

>Drop voicings mean you are ordering the notes from high to low and dropping the voices
>So you arent dropping the interval, you are dropping from highest to lowest

This is why people give up learning holy shit I hate this
>>
>>129081775
>drop
I think learning the proper nomenclature would help clear up the confusion. the basic triad or chord is stacked thirds, so taking a triad and making the original root note the lowest note (pitch) in the chord is normal. making the first third (major/minor third) up the lowest is called a first inversion. the second third (perfect/diminished/augmented fifth) the lowest would be called a second inversion. third inversion would be the dominant/major 7th

It's from piano. You start from the right and drop that finger's note down an octave

Don't get caught up memorizing a bunch of them, most of them are already common chords you'd play or in a band setting you really shouldn't be playing more than the melody line and one or two other notes most of the time unless you're comping. And even for comping hitting the 3rd and 7th are most important

That's why it's important to really learn the fundamentals and where the notes are on the neck. It takes time so focus on learning the major and minor triads thoroughly then slowly incorporate the other qualities.

This cheat sheet has some useful voicings and some I never use. Some I use all 4 or more notes and some only 2-3. The various dom7 are imo the most useful and are linked with dim7. Some maj7/m7 inversions don't sound like a major/minor and are only useful in special occasions so play through them all.
>>
>>129081969
I suggest learning to read sheet music if you want to understand voice leading instead of taking random, dissonant stabs in the dark from someone on YouTube

watch this video but identify the takeaway is how the chords lead into eachother. most of the time it is just chromatic movements between intervals meaning classical composers often just did whatever made fundamental logical sense. it’s really easy to see the connection when you see the notes on the staff. meaning they probably weren’t thinking about the circle of fifths or anything but instead looking at the linear layout of a piano keyboard

I recommend avoiding guitar channels for the most part, very few teach theory well.

The best to learn theory from is Walk that Bass, eventually Open Studio Jazz for other topics

Check out saxophone channels for soloing concepts and ideas, they're often much more clear than equivalent guitar videos

Going through my finances for 2025, I spent a few hundred dollars shy of ten grand on gear last year. That’s ten times more than 2024 and prior to 2024 I was on a years long music hiatus. My play time has increased commensurately with my spending, I can’t say the same for guitar chops though they have improved. I’ve never been about flashy playing though, it’s a means to an end and that end is songwriting. 2025 was the year I got my grove back in that regard, plenty of new songs as well as refurbishing songs I wrote as far back as my first successful band back in the day. For 2026 I need to start actually recording the songs and I also want to get deeper into guitar/pedal maintenance and modification. I want to be able to swap pickups and upgrade pots and get deeper into the electrical side of things. Once I get that down I’ll never need to pay someone to work on my guitars again, I can already handle every other aspect of setup and maintenance. If I can into that, maybe I’ll try to build a project guitar towards the end of the year.
>>
>>129082167
Terribly large board too much wasted space.
>>
>>129082052
np I’ve been in the same boat studying melody over harmony and also turned to classical music. I’ve noticed 80% of it is really simple things, take in the hall of the mountain king. it’s just a minor scale run but when you get to the fifth there is a chromatic sequence of descending thirds or minor 6ths depending on how you look at it. I don’t think Grieg was thinking about anything more that chromatics and simple scale fragments but it’s really cool and expands a simple minor scale. not a great example but lots of ostinato as sequences in classical music but they just sound more complex than they really are
>>
>>129082199
For you maybe. That big board is for my basement, the great thing about pedal boards is they’re modular and you can have multiple.

What’s the deal with soloing on different parts of the neck? There are 4 and 3/4 octaves on a guitar, and a single position covers 3 1/3 octaves! All you need is another half position and you’ve covered all the notes on the fretboard! Is there an organized crime family collecting protection money from the other parts of the neck?
>>
>>129081707
>I would recommend hot rodding an already built guitar so you can learn to do fret dressing, rolling the fretboard edges, and practice fret jobs on a cheap neck.
Don't buy a cheap neck to learn to work on the neck, buy a whole guitar to learn to work on the neck!

>For tools, you probably will spend more than that because that sounds like the cheapest things you could find on alibaba
$15 for a fret rocker
$20 for a notched straight edge
$25 for a fret crowning file
Maybe I could spend more on the crowning file, but honestly i see diminishing returns. They're simple tools with simple jobs. We live in a world of CNC.

>I've read about necks with broken or no truss rod, on top of necks being twisted or just shit.
Thats a defective product. You return defective products. The biggest point of concern is likely the wood hasn't been left to dry long enough, with a roasted maple neck thats far less of a concern. The rest is minor aesthetic imperfections and maybe tolerances that would be easily fixable. I'd take a minor cosmetic imperfection over shelling out over 5x as much.

>If you're willing to cut so many corners for "cheapness"
It's not cutting corners. It's spending money where it actually matters. I’m saving on parts that don’t retain value and spending on components that do (pickups, tuners, trem, bridge etc). If a budget neck or body is bad, I’m out 60-100 which is far less than the depreciation on most production guitars.

Also I just want to put something together, why are you anti fun?

>>
>>129082397
>left to dry
you’re not getting air-dried wood neck for less than $300. everything short of American or custom shop instruments are using kiln-dried lumber. roasting lowers the risk of improper drying but it doesn’t completely get rid of it and it’s still possible to get a piece of case-hardened lumber. I’ll never use kiln-dried lumber if I can avoid it. might not be such a problem if cheap necks had graphite reinforcement rods but they don’t

What I know is: unless it's jazz or blues, play mostly the root. Usually on 1, but sometimes anticipating the 1. Sometimes also play the fifth or the third if it sounds good and genre-appropriate. Sometimes also play the root an octave above for extra shiny stuff. Also, when changing the chords, usually walk from the root to the root using either the chord tones or an appropriate scale, mostly judging by what sounds nice and genre-appropriate. Sometimes however any walking at all at sounds genre-inappropriate, and then I'll just just jump to the new root. Also, in the end of a cycle of chords it's nice to insert some complicated line. As for the rhythm - just do what feels right. Make it groove. Use rests (muting the notes) as well to make it groove. Yeah, that's about it.

Also, yesterday I have figured out that when playing with a pick, I can keep the side of my palm over all the strings very near the bridge and that way I can be really precise at muting them or like kinda-muting them to have a fast decay. This is very cool. I've been mostly playing one-finger-plucking fingerstyle so far but now I want to try picking some more.
>>
>>129082660
ok yeah I think you’ll get something out of the course then. it’s very broad but not super deep. I was hoping he would answer some questions I had about anacrusis and its effect on harmony but he didn’t. still a great course
>>
I can barely keep a bass and 2-3 guitars in a satisfying state at a time. How are people keeping 9 guitars and sometimes multiple of the same guitar in any decent condition?

I don't understand why you'd want 9+ guitars unless if you never play them and only post pictures of them online.

That’s just laziness on your part, and also lack of disposable income. Maintaining my large stable of guitars is part of the fun and has allowed me to develop that skill more than if I just owned two or three. I enjoy playing guitar, so finding time to play each one has never been an issue, and I don’t buy guitars that aren’t worth setting up and keeping. Caring about how many guitars somebody else owns is pretty silly, and telling lol..

everything electric bass leads back to james jamerson. he may not be your favorite bass player but he’s your favorite bass players favorite bass player. you can take any popular electric bassline ever recorded and he probably did it originally and/or better. he started recording in 1957 and has played on 300-400 tracks. it would be wise to study his playing as you can learn literally everything about constructing basslines just from him alone.

Tone fagging is the most dangerous addiction in guitar.

Tone fags will spend weeks researching the best pickups, supposed tonewoods, years guitars were made, pedals, amps, plugins, etc. They will spend 10s of thousands to get the same set up one of their heroes used on a song.

Then they never develop as musicians or write music.

Its a vortex that takes away from the time they should be practicing.

Tone fags end up like Music is Win Every. Single. Time.

I have heard him in the context of people mentioning that he used to pluck with only the index finger. That gives me hope that maybe I don't have to learn the alternating fingers technique.

Also, I guess my favorite bass player is Victor Wooten. In fact, he is the only bass player whose name I know and to whose music I have listened to a lot. Well, there is also Adam Neely with great youtube videos but I don't like his band's music. And there is Charles Berthound who makes nice flashy youtube videos.

>Don't buy a cheap neck to learn to work on the neck, buy a whole guitar to learn to work on the neck!
You connect the neck to a bridge and presumably a body. A good neck in isolation still needs to be properly set up with the rest of a guitar including learning how to level the frets are you go up the neck.

There are a bunch of little tools that make life easier, you don't have to spring for expensive right away but some are worth buying depending on the work you do
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dr3bmPji3js

>Thats a defective product. You return defective products
You're talking about Chinese ebay parts, not everything has returns

I'm not against "fun," I'm against claiming that partscasters are cheap. You're getting ripped off at every step of the way by people making a profit on parts. I don't see the point in dropping a bunch of money on hardware only to fit into $200 of Chinese pressboard. You might be getting the custom guitar you want that's better than something off the shelf, but it's not going to be cheaper.

The point was modifying a cheap guitar to begin with to practice and learn skills on like fret ends or rolling the fretboard. Budget guitars all have fret or neck flaws can be improved upon, and you end up with something playable and better than you got it. That guitar can then be a test mule or storage for whatever crap is bought after. Worst case, you swap it back to stock and can still recoup some of the cost.

Hence why I spoke about doing that. It isn't rocket science, the concepts aren't anything new.

>You're talking about Chinese eBay parts, not everything has returns
You might want to check that yourself. I wouldn't buy something without returns, and even if it wasn't accepted if something is described one way and is another, regardless of if they accept returns, eBay will refund. The sellers love to point out how they are flawless AAAA. That sets high expectations and eBay notoriously sides with buyers.

>You're getting ripped off at every step of the way by people making a profit on parts. I don't see the point in dropping a bunch of money on hardware only to fit into $200 of Chinese pressboard
I think you might just be totally blind to what is actually available. Look up some Chinese necks on eBay, look at reviews on YouTube and forums from the last 5 years. It's far from pressboard and the quality is shockingly good. Its certainly comparable to what you can get at 5x the price elsewhere.

I have a Squire Affinity, I could use that as a base don't see the point. I don't like the look of the neck, I'm not a big fan of the body either. Tonally, yes I could make it sound the way I want at less of the cost of buying a new neck and body in the first place, but thats not the only factor.

You're actually stupid.
I especially don't trust online reviews within the past 5-10 years with how much shilling there's been for low quality Chinese crap. They buy good reviews by sending people free things to write positive reviews and people are more than happy to advertise anything nowadays if they get something worth a few bucks in return. Yes the CHNL (Chinese Guitar Neck Lobby) are hard at work sending free guitar necks, baskets of fruit and a few bucks to forum users so they can make posts that a few hundred people will see. All Chinese neck manufacturers pay into this lobby for the advertising.

Thats much more likely than a CNC machine in China being the same as a CNC machine in America or Mexico.

The Chinese necks you can find for under 200 dollars on eBay or Reverb are pretty good, you can order one and see for yourself it wont set you back much. Body is whatever, really, you can find chinese bodies or USA bodies for under 200, I got a warmoth tele Koa body for 200 a few months back, and thinline tele body with strat tremolo route for 200 a few weeks back -- this also great ROI you can get things that are customshop or limited run for cheap. Think thinline strat body, those are 2k if you buy from fender, they dont have squier equivalents -- I saw a thinline strat body on eBay for 120, you can muck about and test something for 120 without dropping 2k to see if you like a thinline strat. Simple get a neck and a loaded pickguard, some tuners and a t remelo and you're off the to the reaces.

The stuff that matters for partscasters is the hardware. You want good tuners and good bridge/tremelo -- t his is where you smoke OEM stuff. You can get Gotoh S91 tuners for less that 50 bucks on ebay, when compared to squier these are so much better. You can get a babicz bridge for under 200 -- dont even compare the fender stuff to this, this thing blows it out of the water.

If you are cork sniffing the electronics you can splurge on but I found using generic alnico PUPs or second-hand pickups will get you higher ROI here. As for the harness you can build it yourself, its worth doing at least once it can save you huge money -- skip the bumble bee stuff and other cargo cult parts those are very low ROI and the results are negligible.

I like having dedicated guitars for EAEAC#E and DADF#AD and I like those dedicated guitars to be models I enjoy, so a Strat and a Tele
>Even my es-355 has different pickups than my 335
They’re both still humbuckers though, right? By that logic both of my Strats and both of my Tees also have different pickups with different outputs and different sounds so how’s it any different than your two Electric Siestas?

What’s the deal with guitar collectors?
They don’t play guitars they curate them.
You ask, “How does it sound?”
They say, “Oh, I don’t know… I haven’t plugged it in.”
Then what is it doing here?!
It’s a musical instrument, not a rare stamp!
Every guitar has a story.
“This one’s from ’62.”
Oh yeah?
What was it doing in ’62?
Because right now it’s hanging on a wall, living a very quiet life.
And they always say,
“I’m afraid to put wear on it.”
Wear?!
It’s already sixty years old!
It’s not getting any younger
it’s not suddenly gonna bounce back!
Meanwhile, the cheapest guitar in the room gets played every day.
That one’s got dents, scratches, sweat
you know… music.
At this point, these guitars aren’t instruments.
They’re retirement plans with strings!

Then post all the gear you have around you with a timestamp.

Thanks, saw it before but only bothered trying it now. Definitely does help getting out better volume without causing clipping upon render.

Yes

It was in jest on my end lol. Hard to really tell apart sincerity, stupidity and shitposting sometimes but such is the nature of text based anonymous communication but that is part of its charm.

its the jazzmaster. listen to the harmonics and overtones here just playing an esus chord

jazzmasters are really cool because they do shit like that. shit sounds like someones whispering. do that with your guitar convincingly

It all just sounds like guitar and electronic noise.
Even more so in a full mix. Even more more so through my mic.
>>
>>129089229
well i tell you it wouldnt be the same on any other guitar.
the jazz master creates ambience and textures no other guitar can

thats because it vibrates like crazy and the trem system and the bridge they all create overtones.

The pickups amplify the string sound not the trem system lmao. pluck the springs in the back and mute your strings and listen report back how much actually resonates through
>>
https://vocaroo.com/1L6YNkwq9i01

you can't match my superior tone music man
>>
>>129089250
i guarantee you the way the bridge is setup creates overtones
>>
>>129089212
It's fucking tempting! For that price, if I get a guitar with a good neck, frets it would be amazing. Everything else I could mod if needed. My luck with gear just sucks ass though. That looks cool though. I was thinking a black pickguard would look great on it, then I'd put a white JB on top. Add a killswitch too because why not.

No not all 10 as often. I play the white Tele and the LP every day and I could easily make do with one Tele, the LP, the Jag, and the Tele Deluxe but I don’t need to make do with only those. I like the guitars that I have. Both Strats were gifts so they’re not going anywhere. One Tele and one Strat are set up for alternate tunings which I like to have on hand for when I want them, the Mustang’s out of phase sound is a sound that I love but is also situational and it gets use when recording with friends for when I want that specific sound, the Super Sonic is cool but I like my new Tele Deluxe more in every way so it’s on the chopping block, and the Fano is really the only redundant one that I love but also am always on the fence about selling.
The pearl Strat was my go to guitar for a dozen years or so and has played shows across four or five states with me and during those years it was one of only two electrics I would hang on to, and now that I’m a homebody family man and have my own house instead of an apartment I have the space and money to pick up guitars that I want. I am in my 30s and have been playing since I was 13, this is two decades worth of “I want this guitar but can’t afford it now/don’t have space for it now”

I'll seriously consider it. I don't wanna burn too much cash at the moment so this really might be the best option, gives me literally all I need with tons of potential in the future. Thanks for the info, if I get it I hope I'll have no problems with it either.
