>>129195833You should look into the Hal Leonard Guitar TAB method. It's 3 books in series. There are also 2 song books. The song books aren't really needed but they will show you how to play full songs. The 3 instructional books are fun and will have you playing riffs and chunks of songs the very first time you pick up the guitar...in like the first hour, first day...it will hook you and give you the dopamine fix you desire. You can find these books online but they're inexpensive enough to actually buy that I'd strongly suggest that for a newbie. It's structured so by the end of book 3 you're kicking some ass...It starts off like you're a toddler so expect things to progress in that fashion. But you're first lick will be the Jaws theme song. But then you'll be into Tom Petty Free Falling pretty soon after. So you won't be learning stupid child songs...but bits to songs you actually hear on the radio. It's fun.If you're going to spend some cash on anything, this is a quick way to get up and running. If you can actually finish book 1 and then book 2, you won't suck anymore at all...By the end of book 3, you can play in a band and teach yourself or others...

>>129195994They also come with audio codes to download audio to follow along with and try to replicate. What they don't teach you really is how to hold the guitar. Where to put your fingers behind the frets. How hard to press or lightly...how to do inflections like play loudly or softly...that comes by feel. So keep that stuff in mind when you're playing or learning anything. You're trying to speak a language here...music is a language of sound. You can't scream all the time to get your message across. You have to modulate your tone, choose your words, convey meaning. Books don't teach you that. Listening to good music and practicing does.

Back in 2003 my job had me stuck in a hotel in Jackson Hole WY, I was up late watching television one night (that's what we used to do back in 2003) and an infomercial came on the TV that absolutely amazed me. It assured me even I could learn to play. By the time it went over I had the room phone in hand and was ordering my dream guitar. I sprang for the deluxe package with the genuine wood guitar, velvet lined hard case, extra strings, "How to play the guitar" VHS tapes, "Best of CD", and even a tuner gizmo. That is how I ended up with the sweet sweet Esteban acoustic guitar that my 16 yo daughter now takes to school twice a week to her guitar class. I told her to take good care of it as it's so valuable and to make sure the teacher locks it up before and after class. That is my guitar story.

Excuse me sweety? Its called rubato look it up.
Experimental noise rock composition featuring a heavily distorted electric guitar performing a series of dissonant, microtonal slide riffs. The track is characterized by a raw, lo-fi production aesthetic with significant clipping and fuzz. The guitar melody utilizes wide vibrato and erratic pitch shifts, creating a chaotic and abrasive sonic texture. There is no rhythmic accompaniment or percussion, focusing entirely on the feedback-laden, monophonic guitar lead. The tempo is rubato and free-form, lacking a consistent time signature. The frequency spectrum is dominated by harsh mid-range and high-end frequencies, typical of direct-input distortion or overdriven analog circuitry.

Most overrated pedal of all time? I say tumnus or any other klon clone
>>129200136and most use it as a clean boost anyway
>>129200058800w is ok amount for bass
>>129200136Horrible take. The correct answer is the tube screamer. Yeah, it gives you a mid hump, but it dulls the shit out of your low and top end and has a rather smooth, boring sounding breakup. For a mid-boost gain pedal used to boost a slightly broken up amp, the Klon actually sounds amazing because it has more of a harder clip and retains the top end sparkle, and is realistically one of the most practical gain pedals of all time
>>129200154It’s a guitar amp. To give you a relative idea of how monstrously loud this is, a Marshall plexi is 100 watts pushed through 4 12” speakers. Most people cite that as being deafeningly loud and completely retarded for 99% of bands. This thing is 880-watts pushed through a total of 16 speakers, and apparently it will very likely push the breaker in your house to its absolutely maximum limits
>>129200158>tightens up bassThat's why people use it>dulls high endTry turning the tone knob to the right, retard
>>129200237EQ isn’t additive, though. Raising mods automatically lowers bass and treble by perception; adding them back just lowers the mids. I get that the overall curve has slightly changed but it’s just chasing tails.
>>129200237The tube screamer is known for dulling out the tone. You can turn the tone pot to the right, but it still won’t fix the fundamental voice of the pedal. A klon is known for having a more angular, interesting sounding breakup, with the addition of keeping more transparency of your natural amp’s tone. If you actually tried arguing that the Klon is extremely overrated to any guitarist worth their salt, they would all call you a moron
>>129200313sounds like a fuzz pedal
>>129200136Tumnus is nowhere near overrated, I only noticed Klone popularity really taking off in the past few years which was odd to me. Never heard of them for the first 10-15 years of my guitar career. It's better than all the TS glazing.Tubescreamer for me, any Strymon pedal (Iridium, El Capistan, Flint, Deco, the list goes on), Chase Bliss, the plain Big Muff (variants and modded ones are worth the hype), Chroma Console, Microcosm/anything granular, King of Tone (I love BB overdrives but it's Klon tier in levels of overhype, I can't believe so many people like a certain sound that isn't extraordinarily different than most other distortion sounds)
>>129200333The majority of overdrive pedals will start to sound like a fuzz when you crank the gain. It seems as though you don’t actually know how the Klon was intended to be used. Bill Finnegan designed it to boost an amp on the edge of breakup, whether that be through the amp actually cranked up to get natural tube breakup, or through the use of transparent overdrive pedals to give the edge of breakup tone at reasonable volumes. He advises setting the gain to a low/medium level, and just barely turning the volume past noon. If you actually use the Klon how it was intended to be used, you’d realize why it’s one of the most influential pedals of all time
>>129200313>the tubescreamer dulls tone>which is why it's the best selling OD circuit of all time and used on countless professional players' boardsLMAO
>>129200372I’m not that guy also I was just saying fuzz are generally more transparent than overdrive pedals. I also don’t care about your gay pedal so no need to go on an autistic tirade where you repeat yourself
Can someone help me understand chord progression numbers? I.E. I-II-III-IVPeople will say things like "these songs sound similar because they have the same chord progression" but they're in a different key/using different chords so I don't really get it.
>>129200387>TS used exclusively by outdated boomer blues players>Klon used not only by boomer blues players, but also guitarists of literally any conceivable rock subgenre
>>129200387>it's popular!!!so? the tube screamer clipping does round off higher frequencies for a duller tone, even if that tone is musically pleasing.
>>129200117>that picture is very cute, anyways did you know people want to fuck thathuh
>>129200420https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_keyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_numeral_analysis
>>129200420those roman numerals are intervals of what note/chords you play from any scale, they're just a cheat code.
>>129200431The TS is mostly used by blues players because it is more practical for noodling. It sounds really dull and uninteresting when you try to strum/chug full chords. It’s because the TS mostly occupies the lower mid to fundamental mid frequencies. The Klon in comparison succeeds in both lead guitar playing as well as heavier strumming with dynamic breakup tone. The frequency response of the Klon has a prominent upper mid range which gives it that aggressive sound. It’s the same frequency range that the Vintage 30 speakers occupy which are regarded as one of the best heavy rock speakers of all time
Where do anons usually keep their treble at on their amps? I usually keep it around 2-3 because the piercing tones bother me but it seems like I shouldn't because then I don't cut through the mix as much.
>>129200480all amps and guitars are different. a great amp and guitar should be set mostly neutral
>>129200480It depends on a million different things. How loud are you playing? What guitar is being used? What type of amp? Generally I’ve found that if I crank a deluxe reverb, the bass and mids exponentially increases, so I compensate at those volumes by turning the treble up and maybe even turn the bass down to get a balanced tone
>>1292004805
Top 3 red flags that tell you a guitarist isn't worth listening to>Rock or metal>Guitar designed after 1960>High gain master volume tube amp
>>129200538no one gives a shit about guitar music anymore. no need to further split hairs
>>129200513>>129200516I figured as much but just wanted to get an idea of what others do. It's probably just my guitar (70s les paul) and the fact that I'm used to leaving the tone knobs at 10. I'm usually playing through reverb deluxe or similar style amps.
>>129200538Agree except for guitars made after 1960. Some of the most timeless iconic guitars were made in 1963-64 such as the block-inlay es-335 or ‘64 SG with the maestro vibrola
>>129200551go buy a less pointy pick and play farther away from the bridge
>hear a good song>"wait, I need to check if it was played on a guitar designed after 1960!"so glad i dont live in your world
>>129200551If you are playing a Les Paul, youd probably want to slightly lower the bass since those guitars have such a naturally heavy bass frequency due to the mahogany body. Keep in mind that if you crank both the treble and bass on the amp, you’re scooping the mids which will make it harder for you to cut through in a full band mix. I usually keep my treble on fender voiced amps around 6 and my bass around 4-5 depending on how loud I’m playing
>>129200584they are bass heavy because of the scale length, pickup design and location. has nothing to do with the tone wood lol
>>129200574>Honest, guys, it's been used for some good songs!
>>129200570I'll try it out>>129200584>If you are playing a Les Paul, youd probably want to slightly lower the bass since those guitars have such a naturally heavy bass frequencyNoted. Maybe that's why I always left the tone knobs at 10. I'm familiar with scooped mids but it's usually not for me and the style of music I play. I think I just prefer more bass/mid heavy tones too. Never been a fan of the honky tonk trebly stuff.
>>129200622>SG and LP both have ABR style bridges and mahogany bodies>LP has maple top >LP clearly has more top end sparkle relative to the SG which has more of a focused mid rangeDifferent woods will 100% have a noticeable difference in tone. If they didn’t, why would early guitar developers go through all the trouble of putting maple tops on different guitar types? If none of it made any tonal difference whatsoever, why wouldn’t Gibson just use nothing but mahogany for all their guitars and just completely opt out for adding any maple tops to the LP and ES models?
>>129200645you can probably just turn your current pick to the side and use the rounded part. it’s not as dramatic on acoustic but using a thicker and more rounded pick will give you less treble from the strings and moving away from the bridge lowers the mids
>>129200655cause maple looks cool. why else use a transparent finish
>>129200656Interesting thanks
>>129200655>different pickups >different position on the bodybut no its totally the wood
>>129200662Yeah it looks cool, and it’s also not even disputed by literally every single guitar builder that it adds top end sparkle to a guitar’s natural tone. Go to any guitar shop and play both an SG and LP. Note how much more top end the LP has, and how much more narrow the SG’s tone is focused within the mid range. They both have the same body wood, bridge, and humbuckers with the two main differences being that the SG’s bridge pickup is closer to the actual bridge saddles and that the LP has the maple top. If the bridge position relative to the pickups made a much stronger difference than the tone wood, wouldn’t the SG have more top end than the LP?
>>129200655Jim Lill proved toan doesn't come from the wood, grandpa. Stop spreading lieshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n02tImce3AE
>>129200696>not even disputed by literally every single guitar builder that it adds top end sparkle to a guitar’s natural tonebuilders aren't scientists and have not formally tested these things, just repeating what they were told
>>129200720>trusts the “expert scientists” over the actual guitarists and guitar builders with decades of tangible, real world experience You need to directly address my point. Most of the specs (bridge, humbuckers, body wood) on the LP and SG are the same with the two differences being bridge position and maple top. Why is the SG still focused on the mid range frequencies despite the les Paul’s bridge humbuckers being placed further from the bridge saddles?
>>129200696Some builders and acoustic tards think guitars need a vibrator to "activate" the toneThere's nothing scientific about being a builder, it's mostly superstitionhttps://www.stewmac.com/strings-and-accessories/instrument-accessories/tonerite/tonerite-for-guitar/
>>129200696bridge adds low mids not high mids, and by adding low mids it would naturally make the bass and treble less present proportionally that’s just how EQ works. if you want to hear the difference between guitars you need swap the exact same pickups, ensure the tuning is exactly the same, the strings have the exact same tension, you pluck them the exact same way, and you need to record direct. it’s practically impossible to do an AB comparison between guitars and that’s to speak nothing of the fact that no one could pick an sg from a les paul in a double blind test with any consistency
I like how this guy says:"bye-bye"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPLGFZPSYgc[Embed]
>>129200748>despitethat’s backwards. moving a pickup closer to the bridge factually increases low mids. high mids are shit like string noise. you can really see this on stuff like a jazz bass because it’s just the same pickup in a different location. the output difference is less than 5%
>>129200755>provides both a red herring and ad hominem fallacy in one statement >>129200760Yeah I don’t even disagree with you. Even if we agree on all the points being made, the top end and low end disparity between the SG and LP is very noticeable to any guitarist with years of experience. Bringing the bridge pickup not even an inch closer to the saddles will certainly not produce that gaping difference in tone between the two guitar types. The low end and top end of the LP comes from the larger amount of mahogny and maple, respectively. The differences in pickup position and string tension are so ridiculously negligible between those two guitars. There’s a fundamentally different design between the guitars which is completely dependent on different amount and types of wood used.
What's the fastest you've ever returned a piece of gear?I bought one of those mini Tubescreamers a few years ago when there was a markdown, thought it was on enough boards how bad could it be.... Completely annihilated the tone through my tube amp, could not stand the nasalness. Dropped it off that night to be shipped back for a return. My Boss bass equalizer pedal is a better TS than the TS
>>129200748>the actual guitarists and guitar builders with decades of tangible, real world experience...in guitar building and playing, not science. i'm not saying they dont know how to build a guitar.>Why is the SG still focused on the mid range frequencies despite the les Paul’s bridge humbuckers being placed further from the bridge saddles?two different types of humbuckers can produce wildly different results even at the same placement along the string, much more so at different placements.
>>129200849Same dayI purchased a tweed deluxe but they sent me a bassman
>>129200831I agree that even on electric guitars that density and resonance of the neck and body can rob energy from the strings and therefore change the tone but I believe the results are inconsistent, unquantifiable, and negligible. the property of wood cut from the same log can vary wildly depending on the grain direction
>>129200856The SG ahd LP were built using the same exact PAFs in the early 60s and still had very distinct sound differences. Ultimately, the discussion between why these two guitars sound different is realistically focused on the effect of pickup position placement and tonewood. Clearly, pickup position has an effect on tone, but the difference in tone between the two guitars is so different to me that I do not at all believe it’s completely dependent on pickup position alone
>>129200870That's obviously not the same thingYou also made the wrong choice

>>129201001some guy posted a study here about like 4 months ago, I can’t find it but they concluded that there was no discernible difference in the timbre of the instrument regarding use of tonewood on electric pickups. here is another study that suggests it may make a difference but there are two huge red flags with this study. one, there is no conclusion or analysis of the timbre of the instrument, only the measured decibel value of the fundamental harmonics of the note and 2) the results of the listeners were gathered remotely and they each used their own headphones…. I’ll look for the other one for a few more minutes but I don’t want around all day waiting to get into arguments with people https://www.researchgate.net/publication/394170283_On_the_Audibility_of_Electric_Guitar_Tonewood

Anyone ever play a Novo? Recently got to play one at a local shop. Was blown away, probably the best guitar I’ve ever played. Played tons of custom shops and other boutique guitars, but the novo I played undoubtedly had the nicest feeling neck and fretwork, as well as most resonant body I’ve ever experienced. Probably my new dream guitar
