/n/ can I get your opinion on my daily route home. I've ridden this every day for over 5 years. Sometimes people who also live at the top have told me they can't believe I ride up this every day. It's 4.5 miles total from the subway station. It takes me around 27-28 minutes to ride it, maybe closer to 25 if it's a good day, google maps says 40 minutes. I can't really get above the low 6s mph on the steep parts. Going down in the morning I hit between 35-40 mph coasting down this same steep part.

I dunno, just wondering how you think my performance here is.
>>

I've been unlucky lately.
Took a short ride yesterday, crashed from braking on asphalt that was wet on a section. Bruised my elbow up good and skinned my leg.
Punctured a tube on the past 2 MTB rides before that, pretty sure due to a fucked up rim or something.
>>
>rode new route today
>route was a paved cycling trail
>trail had underpasses under the road
> a few of them had thick patches of sand
>rode through them without issue but it scared the fuck out of me
>took them slow coming back

I don't care what anyone says, sand and gravel patches scare the fuck out of me. I don't care if "you maintain 20mph and hit them straight on you won't have issues" it's that one time you slide and crash and it's all fucking over. Maybe I'm over reacting?
>>
>>2002058
Nah you good bro.
I had my worst crash on strewn sand over a concrete turn. Whacked my hip into a bridge at 5-15mph. Don't even remember the impact, just my mom pouring hydrogen peroxide over a big gash on my knee.

I would recommend you slow down, get in an easy gear, and spin through the sand. Carrying momentum is safe, until your front wheel gets a little off track.

One great thing about riding in summer is seeing all the sweaty women in cycling and fitness gear. A good number of them even have their armpits exposed for anyone to see.

Used little ring(38t) once on an 18% hill, otherwise did most of this in 52x11-34, wide range cassettes are the future.
I’ve been riding casually for a while but does /n/ think I could get competitive if I’ve been doing rides like this 3-4 times a week? I need to get my workouts a little more dialed so I can actually be fast over these distances but I think this is a good baseline for fondo racing this fall.

It took a few brain cells to figure out how to get this to the post office without needing to drive
Rear rack and bungee cords, think this will do
I’ll just have to make more trips Monday

Total today was 12 miles of errands around town, mostly raiding the local hardware store for tools and electrical stuff, nothing crazy
Tomorrow I embark with that box and many more, items I sold on eBay to afford to build a high end single speed
But I also kinda just want to put stupidly high end parts on the melon bike
>>
>>2002441
Like imagine that meme machine but with
>phil woods bottom bracket
>thomson seatpost

I put platform pedals on my mountain bike because I have something coming up where I'll need to do a bunch of walking off bike. Its hard to fight the muscle memory of having used SPDs exclusively for about 12 years. My feet keep sliding off the pedals and heel hitting the crank arms. I'll try swapping out the plastic pedals for a pair of pedals with pins so at least my feet won't slip.

>high end single speed
Like a track bike? Unless actually riding track I think that’s kind of lame, brakeless with an insane gear ratio for street riding can’t be fun. If you’re talking about a single speed CX bike, I’m all for it, that’ll make you a better rider in every way possible, and you can actually race it and have a cool life and not be an autist doing autistic things for his own autistic amusement.
>>
>>2002441
protip, cross the two bungees together instead of just going over each other for ultra stable packing.
>>2002459
>brakeless with an insane gear ratio for street riding can’t be fun
while this is true, track bike with brakes and a tall non-leglet ratio (greater than 3:1) is insanely fun on the street but the handling is so spicy it can highside on command. I feel my track bike has more dangerous handling than some motorcycles I've owned, so yeah, that's what makes it fun on the street
>>
>>2002459
Less track bike, more commuter.
Idea was 44/16, freewheel, linear pull brakes
But 700x32 tires for mixed terrain
A commuter, but I wanted to use really high end components.
And I’m leaning away from the idea now thinking about having too many bikes, I already have 2 that barely if ever get ridden, and 3 I do ride regularly.
>>2002469
The two red ones go across eachother, the green one is actually just one long one, it’s solid, I test fit it today and ripped it around to see if it would go anywhere and it did not

45 miles today.
Bonked again, but this time at 23 miles in and it felt like shit again...... At least I was flying pretty good before that, bringing some food next time. I am such a retard.
Man the bike trail we have is smooth.
>>2002429
You can be competitve. DESU I used to race junior xc mtb and I was cat 3/4 while carrying 20lbs of fat extra and not that good.
Really depends on how competitive your location is, your goals, and type of race, but if you are doing 50miles 3-4 times a week, you are already training 9-12 hours, which is a lot for your average joe shmo.

If you do plan on racing do some research on "peaking" and of course training. Doing that right and not coming in rekt for a race is huge.
>>
>>2002441
If I was building a super melon bike it would be
>campagnolo record hubs laced to nice 32 or 36 spoke rims
>carbon seatpost
>conti 2.2 tires, or rene herse. Something fast
>super cool brake levers, don't know enough.
Also, just looking on ebay for weird esoteric fancy 90's stuff.

Oh, but a high end single speed is awesome. I ride one a ton
>>2002470
I run a 46/18 freewheel, ancient caliper brakes, 700x28s, campagnolo front hub with mavic g40 rim, suzue rear hub with mavic reflex rim all 36 spoke

It's fun, but if you have plenty of bikes I wouldn't bother. Ride more and then decide later.
My favorite part is how quiet it is, how it makes you ride differently(standing lots+building momentum for hills), and how efficient it is.

isn't that supposed to be a triple crankset?
Squeeze your front brake hard, does the cable stop flex? I bet it does. You're losing braking there.
You should file the keys off your headset washers (useless form of neanderthal adjustment that is prone to strip steerer tubes when the washer and nut sieze together and then the keyed washer gets threaded off the fork)
You can then delete some of your headset and fit a chunkier brake cable stop in there.

also clamp bottle cages on your fork and put storage containers in them
and clamp 2-3 inside the frame triangle for water

That is a gorgeous bike btw.

I would also look for a different seatpost, flutes inside your frame is not good
>>
>>2002660
he's got his hoods setup on the edge of being able to brake in the drops, which is a fair limit of how you can do it, then, point the bars at the rear brake, also a fair limit.

It's cruisey but i would find it awkward having my wrist at that angle for braking in the drops, even with one finger braking. Because he has bar end shifters and a high bar, the drop position should be comfier imo. I like to put a flat edge against the lowest flat bit of the bars and butt the brake levers against that.

Think he may prefer a different shaped bar or a shorter stem, maybe not, iunno, if it works it works. It's also annoying to experiment with.

Just went to a great little bike park, it's on the site of an old golf course, has several tracks each one very different, with easy non technical to black run highly technical runs.

I was the only one there on a rigid mtb, most were full suspension, a couple front suspension only, was so much fun. It's great that we have this in our town, where the roads are narrow and full of traffic.

No pics but lots of fun moments, there's one short fast track that is basically 3 jumps and a high speed berm that propelled you into a climb back to the start, doing that on a rigid bike was pretty scary, but I never came off.

>>2005044
It took me countless hours of headache and ruined rides to even get the rails to stop slipping, and I had to torque them down to a point where I was afraid it was going to break something, I'm not greasing them you troll
>>
>>2005047
Grease on bicycles helps things clamp tighter (unless it has ptfe in it).
Lubricating the threads of a bolt allows it to torque more, easier and safer.
Grease on mating surfaces acts like a washer (which will deform). Mating surfaces do not perfectly align and grease basically fills the gaps/imperfections and allows you to clamp over the entire surface.

It's funny that you struggled so much over something basic and yet are hostile to the idea that you might have been doing it wrong, or have anything to learn.
>>
I'll just say again though, a -very thin- film of grease, onto a clean surface. Not loads of it.

Practically every mating surface and bolt thread on a bicycle should be greased.
>>
for example you should also be greasing where your handlebar clamps.
Threadless stems should have the steerer greased.
Quill stems should have a shitload of grease around the wedge and on the shaft.

Weak frame and tyres not meant for speed
>>
>>2005923
Lots of bikes are like that especially ones with really steep angles.

Can be a lot of different things.
Potentially your frame or fork are bent. If it's a steel bike you may want to check the alignment as it can be repaired.
Headset bearing and wheel hubs can cause this.
Cabling can also cause it.
many other things.

The first thing to do is overhaul your headset, and experiment with having it slightly tighter than normal. Then service your hubs.
>>
>>2006176
Good lad. You're learning.
Care with the triflow though. The PTFE in that will make things slippy, also spraying gratuitous shit in places will build up dirt/gunk.

This slows you down a lot. When you see pro riders stand on a climb it's because they're forcing a large gear in preparation for a massive acceleration. It doesn't make any sense to stand if you're already going as fast up the hill as you can manage.

Bit of a crazy night. Went out late to sneak to the top of an under construction concrete silo. Had rained and bike got packed up with wet clay on gravel road so I had to abandon it and walk further. Dodged a security guard and made it to the external scaffolding stairs. Made it up the 18 flights without being noticed. To get on top of the silo I would have had to climb a ladder above the top of the scaffolding which I noped on. So I didn't get a chance to climb the platform on top of the silo which was another 6 flights. I made my way back down and slipped off into the dark without being noticed. Once I got back to my bike I had to pick up the back end and roll it on the front wheel back to the paved road. Then spend 5-10 minutes pulling off clay so I could ride it.

ah i don't have a gravel or mountain bike. i try to bike early at 5-6am but recently i haven't been able to sleep well and I keep cycling at 8-11am. not as busy but still enough fucking indian immigrant shitty women drivers to piss me off.

maybe i should invest in a mountain bike since we have a lot of good trails here but i honestly prefer road cycling when the roads are empty and i can just empty my mind
>>
>>2007344
Yeah I try to ride at 5:30 and be home around 9-10. The heat in my area forces people off the bike trails around then anyways.
Can always walk the trail and imagine it on a bike, then make your decision later. MTBing is fine but calmer double track or gravel roads would be better for "emptying your mind".

Melon Marin went out for proper mountain biking
around 21 miles total? I don’t use a smartphone anymore so I don’t have strava to really keep check, I just guesstimate with google earths ruler tool at home later
It’s funny how much the littlest obstacles feel so extreme on this thing
Hit like a 2 foot gap, effectively a little ramped step up at speed and it felt like hitting some fuckhuge thing on A-line or something

I was checking out my used truing stand that I'm planning to sell. The specs on Park's website said it should handle hubs up to 150 mm, but the stand only opened to 140. Turns out the person who owned it before me didn't install the rebuild kit properly. Also they used a teflon grease on the threads that became stiff as plastic over time causing it to bind up. Works much more smoothly now and opens to 155 mm.

>Are gloves a must or do you get used to it?
Really depends on what the root cause of the discomfort is - if you're keeping a death grip on your bars/brakes, or you have very poor core strength, then discomfort will go away as your technique and fitness improve. If it's a posture/ergonomic issue then you'll continue to have discomfort until that's addressed. Gloves can help if your hands are sliding on the bars, and do protect your skin from abrasion, but won't do anything to help solve the former issues.

Get a pair of $13 nomex flight gloves and fold the cuffs up when you don't need them. The contact patch is all leather but the top isn't so you don't sweat to death.

>Hand palms were hurting quite a bit after the ride because of the bumps/breaking. Are gloves a must or do you get used to it?

gloves are mostly there so that you don't fuck up your hands in a crash, they won't prevent hand pain from overuse or road chatter.

i bought a moped years ago but it broke down, my cbt ran out, it needs an mot, tax, and new petrol, plus i need to renew my cbt. should i just sell it buy a bike and a new gpu? i could prob get 1k for it. whats a cheap comfy bike to zip to the shop on and for 1 to 2 hour bike rides? i prefer cross country to road bikes but do love the feel of a triple clamp off roader even on the road.

by Odin I wish my shitty Xperia XA2 had such quality. I can't really explain, evreything is greyish, even if you're in the middle of a green forest in plain day, your eyes see a myriad of different greens, from dark to light, very contrasted, with black trunks, and on your picture, there only is a grey-green jam of leafs like some AI generated shit, the one where you can't discern a single item. Even when you take some very detailed photo, everything is blurry and the graphic sound is crazy.

Felt really stronk today with the coolest morning air we have had in a month or so. However I messed up and I need to slow down more when I encounter 10+runners on the bike trail, because of course they were 3+ wide, walkers coming from the other direction, and a cyclist as well.

Was neat to pass a dude, fill up my bottle, and pass him again.
Also encountered the young short dude standing up hills on his mtb going pretty fast. Huge calves. About 43 miles or so. Finally tightened my DT friction shifter enough it doesn't shift when i stand.

Do you keep that drivetrain really clean or is just a high contrast shooting scenario with the flash at nighttime? Nice. Maybe I'll go for it one of these days, Ive been using the Mariposa sunflower drip wax which was really well rated on ZFC but unlike immersive paraffin it does get messy looking with very little use.

Not sure if its because I've been lubing and cleaning rather reliably with my current equipment or its the wax but the chain longevity is best I've experienced so far (even though 11 speed has less wear tolerance than my previous lower end components).
>>
>>2011367
i picked up the cheapest parafin wax from amazon, obv dont fall for the meme marketing and get some kinda whole expensive kit. just boil the bag of wax in a pot of water till it melts and shove the chain in the bag (after cleaning/stripping it)
wax tards make it sound like a lifestyle rather than something that takes 15min to do

do i need a power meter/hr monitor? i really just want to know speed, distance, cadence and route, mostly.

>>
>>2013090
/bqg/ is the thread to ask, you can also usually fool the jannies into letting you post a stand-alone thread by calling it (your question) + general, so in this case, "bike computers general"
>>
>>2013090

imo cadence data is a (nearly) completely useless holdover from the beforetimes, when nobody knew anything and the commonly available training advice involved sketchy truisms about cadence.

rather than a bike computer I would suggest a garmin watch - whatever you can budget or wrangle out of your job benefits. this + strava on your phone gets you all of the useful metrics and real-time workout performance charts like heartrate, estimated power, etc

What do you guys recommend as a cycling camera for cagie incidents? I've had a lot recently, including someone chasing me down the road threatening to kill me with their car.

I ordered a DJI Osmo 4 for the front because I can also use it for other things. Then on the rear I'm split between a cheaper 150 pound action camera, pretty much just a cheap go pro or a cycling rear camera and light unit.

The rear camera lasts 4hr on one charge but the footage is just going to be standard 720 whereas an action camera can be used for other things but also gives good quality pictures. Battery is around 2hr 10 minutes on the cheaper action cam, so I will have to replace them for some rides which is fine. I've got good lights already like the Bontrager Flare which is small and does a good job on the rear already.

Any thoughts or considerations I'm missing? It plan to make some videos in the future so I get a good front, but the back camera would be 150 for the action cam or 200 for the light and rear cam.

I'm UK and these people get prosecuted. I get no money, unless it's damage to property. Your mindset is backward, though if you're american it's different. If more cyclists had cameras and held drivers accountable for their dangerous driving, it will instill fear of prosecution and increased insurance costs therefore they'll find other ways to take out their anger.

In the UK we have cycling mikey who is a popular channel and almost daily gets drivers reported. It does change mindsets and reminds people there are consequences for their actions. You want to drive head on at me and then chase me down a road saying you'll run me over? Probably getting banned for 6 months and he'll never do that again, his family and friends will know about it and they will adjust their behaviour.

I'm an extremely conservative cyclist and I still get into a considerable amount of trouble with vehicles because as the post says, people are just psychotic and want to inflict pain on others. If we all had cameras cagies will be less likely to behave like that, and this is a fact that's proven in the UK at least.

Any decent free online route planners specifically for cyclists? Something like komoot?

Did my first (metric) century ride. My butt hurts.

strava is better of course, but they paywalled their route planner. strava heatmaps is still useful for identifying the best roads/paths though.

The fact that themed, non-general threads are now 50% unrelated "I don't know where to put this" questions is a sign that the overbearing control freak push to make everything a general has been a failure. Just let people make their own damm threads. Not everything has to be a general.
>>
>>2014419
I don't mind people making threads about anything but they should actually contribute to their thread. Lets say it's a thread about buying a bike, I want to see some pics of the bike after they buy it and some thoughts on it.
Lets say it's about fixing a mechanical issue, post pics about doing it, post updates if it worked or not. Contribute to the sum of board knowledge and show other posters how shit is done.

If people want to start a thread they should actually have some idea about making a good thread.
Whereas most of the time people start junk threads and get seethed at, they're just asking a really basic question, or pretending to ask advice about buying something they've already decided on, and then they don't contribute anything else.
>>
>>2014435
People are going to do it anyway, some of those "shit threads" turn out great, other high effort threads die, that's the nature of this website, you can't control everything, trying to control it just makes it suck more

I managed to find an XT hub on ebay that has the same flange specs as my current Deore hub so I'll be able to reuse my spokes. My current hub has had water get in it several times during spring riding and makes awful noises now despite a clean / lube.

The XT hub has been out of production for a while so they are getting harder to find. LBS couldn't order one. As far as I can tell that was the last 135mm 6 bolt rotor xt hub. The hub I destroyed seems to be the legacy hub they are keeping around and I didn't want to go through the hassle of a wheel build to put one of those back in.

Went back to this place today, met some cool people. Had fun jumping. honestly I wasn't feeling as fluid as I was last time and I was really over jumping a lot which was starting to worry me... I was sort of realizing that the place isnt really setup well in some sections.
Watched some assholes on gravel bikes go down the green section where little kids on bikes with training wheels go down. One crashed, broke something like ribs, collar bone, neck and maybe punctured a lung? all at like 5 mph.

Fast yields to slow. If you're sharing a path with peds and you're on a bike, you're always at fault. I'm not saying it's not annoying that they do that shit, but you're on their turf, you should assume they're going to do something stupid.
>>
>>2016525
totally my fault, was distracted as I was sperging out about the stem being out of center by like 3 degrees and so was focused looking down at the front wheel. the guy didn't even noticed but i stopped just in time, i was going slow but i could have catched his leg or shoe with the front wheel as I was approaching from behind

35-38 degrees celsius still where I live, too hot to ride. I went for a quick lap around town in the evening and it was maybe the most fun I've had on my bike in a while, it was cool and almost chilly, no wind, little traffic. Just a quick ride in regular clothes.

Took it from my basement and changed everything besides frame and wheels (tires are new). It was a cheap "mountain bike" my parents bought something like 25 years ago. Did already around 40 km on it and it was fine. Thinking about doing 100 on it (normal roads, gravels and setts, some forest roads). What do I need to focus on to make it work?

New tire replacing my winter wtb senderos, rolls with less perceived resistance, and so far seems to grip good enough though the real test will be in muddy rain.
Seated the bead, added the milk and realized the decals were not aligned, had to start again.
Both are 47c though the wtb's seem a bit girthier.
Rode my home loop and the contis are enjoyable, two tires for the price of one sendero.
