My FIL has an old 2 stroke Aermacchi Harley dualsport, I think it's a 125. Been sitting in his shed for 30+ years since he had kids. The chromed parts are a little rusty and it's covered in dust, but everything looks relatively intact. I'm trying to get him to restore it with me since we don't really have much in common. Obviously I'm gonna get a battery, new plug, get a carb off the shelf, then figure out the rest once I get it to turn over. I don't know anything about restorations though, do I need to know anything else? Is there some kind of guide to rebooting old shitbikes? Should I take apart the engine? What's the likelihood there's rust in the internals?

Quick question to some of the more experienced dual sport riders out there. How do I deal with sand and soft sand? I went out to the pine barrens today and quickly learned how slippery the dirt can be. How can I improve? Bike liked to fishtail a bit, and it was sometimes hard to stay out of a rut with our sliding down the sides of the trail. Deeper sand was even more miserable. How can I improve? I was taking it at around 10-15 in first gear.Additionally. I'm worried about sand in my chain. Won't that mess up the chain or the sprockets? Last question. How do I get better at starting from a standstill, I either bog down and stall, or start off too fast for my liking. I'm struggling to find a balance without pushing off a little.
