Viffer bros
an old boomer in my neighborhood has been trying to sell me his old '99 VFR
he keeps telling me about the "damn crank case timing is all fucky"
he's offering to sell it to me, but I don't know what the hell he means by crank case timing
does he mean the valves? Or is something terribly wrong that we're not fully aware of?
>>
>>28017391

Honestly that sounds like it's going to need serious mechanical and/or electrical work, but that's still worth it if you can talk him down low enough and then pay a stealership probably more than you paid him to fix it. If it was most other kinds of bikes I'd tell him to fuck off but you literally can't buy a new V4 anymore without paying 25,000 pastabux for some Ducati or Aprilia.

V4 engines are beautiful. Even in a relatively low revving one like my Crosstourer (redline is about 8'500rpm), they just seem to keep power coming.
There was an issue with some VFRs that got dubbed as chocolate cams - might want to check if that bike is of that generation
>>
>>28017523

>but I don't know what the hell he means by crank case timing
It's nonsense. Get a video of it trying to start and idle then compare the sounds to a video of a good one. The good news is it's probably not mechanical as 5th gens are nigh impossible to kill, the bad news is it could be literally anything
>>
>theft recovery
>no title
Why do people try to get away with insurance fraud on fb marketplace
Who the fuck is buying a bike with no title? I can just steal one for free
>>
>>28017532
You're thinking of the VF. 99s are the 5th gen VFR and have fuel injection and gear driven cams with no vtec which is the best combo for reliability.

>>28017473
VFR engines are cheap, if it's truly a mechanical issue then 1k would be a good deal.
>>
>>28017547
There are a lot of sketchy retards out there trying to pull one over, but It's easy to dodge those by looking up the vin on NICB. There are some deals to be had on no title bikes.

To follow up with the dust issue that I asked about over a week ago I went with 2 full coats of Turtle Wax Hybrid Ceramic spray with 24 hours in between each coat since someone recommended ceramic sprays. The dust and road debris sticking to the bike cut down to less than half of what it used to and now I can actually just blow the bike down with a cheap corded air duster from amazon and it looks 100% clean again. All the remaining dust and light mud spots flies right off without wiping.

You do understand insurance companies purchase data on their customers, right? How is Moshe and Goldberg going to react when they find out your commute often involves speeds 15mph or faster than the speed limit, filtering in a state where it's not legal, or general accelerometer records? Doesn't even have to be leaked, as you agree to the terms and conditions that can be updated at any time. Here's one massive app that got caught selling almost exclusively to insurance orgs. Collecting speed and accelerometer data too.
https://www.kbb.com/car-news/spying-on-your-driving-weather-apps-gas-price-apps-more/
>>
>>28018047

My data has already been breached by plenty of other shit. So has that of every American. Social security numbers, names, and emails are literally all public information at this point. I still didn't get my identity stolen and never will because I'm not a retard. Use a password manager to auto-generate passwords, use 2FA with a yubikey, and freeze your credit at all times other than when to plan to open a new account or take out a loan. There, I just made you impervious to identity theft.

I wasn't exaggerating when I said LITERALLY every American's data has been breached. ALL social security numbers, names, and emails are public data.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/social-security-number-leak-npd-breach-what-to-know/
There are thousands of data breaches per year, and you can't avoid giving out your data. If you have ever had a job, own a bank account or credit card, have a driver's license, rent an apartment or own a house, then you have given out your data, and it's been breached. You need to stop relying on the hope of your data not being breached as your main line of defense against identity theft, because it's a false hope, and you might actually be one of the most vulnerable people because you have no clue what's going on.

Instead, you should operate under the assumption that all of your data is public and take steps to protect yourself accordingly. Following the 3 steps I mentioned in my previous post will make you impervious to identity theft. Think of it as finding yourself in India, and just putting on gloves rather than trying to avoid touching shit which is an impossible task that will drive you insane. Then you can rest easy at night and stop being a schizo. And as a bonus, you can use services like Instagram and Google Maps without fear, which are pretty useful for your life.

>Implying implications.
Though I do think the stock tkc 70's on the 390adv do outlive the engine for one reason or another.
>>
>>28018230
It's true that this is technically possible, but it's easy to avoid with only a modicum of brain cells. Apps have permissions which you set in the settings of the phone itself for each app, and they physically can't collect data from your device which you don't permit in the settings menu since they don't have root level access to the device. If you don't let an app collect location or accelerometer data when you're not using the app, then this isn't happening, full stop.

Even besides that, it's highly unlikely that Instagram would attempt to sell telemetry data to my insurance company.
For one thing, it's a massive app that's under a lot of scrutiny about privacy and data usage. Zuck has been to congress and badgered about privacy. If they started doing this, people would find out immediately and it would be massive news and a huge reputational hit. Also, they make a lot of money by other means and wouldn't need to resort to a controversial and possiblity illegal practice after other shittier apps have already gotten sued about it. It just doesn't make any sense.

If anything, you're making an argument not to use any apps EXCEPT the biggest ones like Meta and Google products, since those are under the most public scrutiny and have the biggest reputational risk to avoid by leaking or selling your data in a way that would piss people off.

Camshafts as a wear item should be expected on a high strung, high performance bike like KTMs. If you want some boring commuter with no character and the lack of a rider/bike relationship built through maintenance then just get a jap bike, poorfag.

Went riding with my mate, awesome day but it was getting a bit hot.
I need to rip the power commander out and get a woolich flash tune, because the throttle is very snatchy when transitioning from braking to throttle in the corners. It felt shitty and upset the bike when I was leaning a lot, especially because it was a very tight road so I was spending a lot of time in 1st at low RPM.
The 690 is slower than I remember but still tons of fun to ride, power wheelies everywhere

You can always do small things like installing frame sliders or cleaning and greasing things. Polishing the plastics, touching up little things. My zx6 was ROUGH when I brought it home. Have you cleaned and greased your throttle tube and cables/clutch cable? One of the largest improvements you can do on an old bike. I need to make a a video on cleaning old cables actually, it helps so much. My zx6 was difficult to find cables for and cleaning them was a god send.
>Sick zx6r

That's the thing, this guy literally spent nearly a thousand prepping it for sale. It's got new tires, freshly lubed cables, even greased the shifter. It literally rides like brand new. Has the receipts too
Has all the nice aftermarket mods too like frame sliders and a slip on. I've been cleaning the chain every week and hitting the tank/fairings with instant detail after every ride just to feel like I'm doing something for it ;_;

You do not want to open up a fucked v4 engine. If it has timing issues that's due to damage or idiots getting inside it. The owner reeks of moron but sometimes they can sell shit cheap and it better be cheap if it doesn't run or runs badly.

If you MUST have it do a cold compression test on all four cylinders. If they pass it's probably electrical or fuel. Cam timing etc causes bad compression readings due to lobes not being where they should. Don't pay much at all since broken bikes ain't shit.

Pay so little you can part it out for profit if it's not worth fixing. Never go shopping hungry and never marrry what you can pimp.

t.ancient mechanic
>>
>>28017414
>he says it "takes 2 years to start"

That's usually fuel-system related. For example a leaking internal EFI hose or a weak pump. Don't fix it or troubleshoot it, just ensure the compression test is good.
>>

Oh damn, that's awesome, usually don't find bikes that well cared for, good find.
The gixxer is a 750, the zx6r is a 599 (not the 636). I love both of them for different reasons. The zx6r is better for putting you in the pocket and hitting Twisties, the 750 is an amazing squid missile lol. I probably could send it through 6th if I wanted, just depends where I'm at and what mood I'm in. I actually don't ride super fast usually. Most rides I don't break 135 mph.

The bike was pretty clearly dropped as there's crack on the plastics n all that as well as pitting on the forks and some seriously oxidized hardware here and there from the guy leaving parked at the beach. Still looking to set aside some time off from work to take off the forks and sand down the triple tree + repaint. Might also see if I can get a hardware kit to replace all the rusty bolts too.
>The zx6r is better for putting you in the pocket

Clean the forks with triple zero steel wool (clean the shaving dust off after). You can fiberglass the back side of the fairing crack to hold it together, then touch it up with color and clear. New hardware will brighten it up for sure if the bolts are rusty.

Race position basically.
I'm not going to lay the 750 over, I just meant that it's better for street. I'll be doing my track and lot practice with the zx6. Probably will get sliders for the 750 though. Don't get me wrong, the 750 is a great track bike, the zx6 just is better for me personally on track.

I gave it to my best friend provided he pays for the valve job (~$300) He got his license this year but wants to get a drz400 for offroad shit. We figured the R3 would be a good sunday rider for him to get his general riding/wrenching skills practiced while he gets his other financials sorted out. Fartnig did a review on it. They are awful to work on and slow... but as a commuter it's probably about perfect.

No problem, I don't know everything but I'll help with what I can. Tin foil actually will work, but steel wool is better for fine oxidation/rust.
>Track
That is correct, the more you do track the more likely you are to layerdown but I'm not putting the 750 on track.
I was trying to drag knee in the parking lot on my zx6 that day, and I'm my defense I did drag knee, I just had the bike on top of me.
Lending the R3 to your buddy was probably the correct move there.

why is there such a culture around motorcycles...

It's just that any glove without palm sliders are retarded in 2024.

These are hardly even a motorcycle glove other than being able to punch mirrors with your carbon knuckle protector, who the fuck would buy gloves that have like as much mesh as leather.

Ive started waving at any motorized two wheel vehicles
Why not? They are taking the added risk of not being in a car so I think they deserve it. Also scooter riders are often cute ladies. I can tell it makes them feel good to be waved at by a big bike.
I dont wave at ebikes though

>No problem, I don't know everything but I'll help with what I can.
Oh I wanted to ask as a follow up, will the steel wool not leave a huge circular scratch path from where I was using it? Would metal polish still be advised?
>I was trying to drag knee in the parking lot on my zx6 that day, and I'm my defense I did drag knee, I just had the bike on top of me
Did you drag wrist and mirror too?
>Lending the R3 to your buddy was probably the correct move there.
Not really lending it to him, the title is fully in his name and he has his own insurance on it. If he were to try and part it out for money I wouldn't stop him, but he's really close to me like a brother so he tends to have my best interest in mind.
Which as of right now would be to keep the R3 alive as long as possible to spite its history, we both wanna see how long it can go for because the engine is in really good quality for what it's been put through
