If it is getting chewed then there must be something down there, look for which fish are out there and use hooks that might fit in their mouths

>>2785867
Has anyone here ever used one if these? It looks like you can use it to map out the bottom of ponds and lakes as well as an active fish finder wherever you cast it. Is it as useful as it looks? Or is it a waste of money?
>>
>>2785948
The 2 people I know who bought these sold them within a year. They kind of work but the real thing is that there really isn't usually anything worth seeing /deep enough to be worth using a sonar for within casting distance of the bank, and it's not useable as a live sonar to find fish and then cast to them. Its a solution looking for a problem.

i just use this, it's maybe a little simpler to get rigged up
i also don't use 3 way swivels otherwise but i use barrel swivels for lure fishing too because i can't be assed learning fg nots or whatever
this way you can also set the drag really light, or leave the bail open so the fish have less of a chance of feeling the weight/line when they grab the bait and spitting it out, so you can fish a couple rods at once if you want
downside is you almost always get hooks in their guts, so i only do this when i'm keeping fish, then quit when i hit limit
>>
>>2786163
>downside is you almost always get hooks in their guts
You had me until that.
>>
>>2786163
>this way you can also set the drag really light, or leave the bail open
I'm a big fan of baitfeeder / bite and run reels. You flip a switch, and you're using a lighter drag system. I also recommend circle hooks, since they're probably hooked by the time they can feel it, so there's no way they're spitting it.
>>
Caught this lovely bass this morning on my memecaster using 12lb fluro with a Texas rigged Berkley power bait pumpkin seed 7" curlt tail worm with a 1/4 oz bullet weight and a 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu hook. Temps cooling ever so slightly here in FL and I have been having great luck with the Berkley power worm. Also caught a smaller one with my Zebbco Roam telescoping rod with a rapala shad rap 05. The zebbco was my entry rod and I keep it in my truck. I get shit from a lot of people but I love it and have caught a ton of fish with it. You can get it off amazon for 40$ and I'd recommend it for any newbies or anyone that wants a portable banger rod.
>>
>>2786166
you can try small circle hooks like already suggested
if you instead hold the rod with the drag tighter and feel for a bite and immediately set the hook, you're much more likely to get them hooked in the mouth, but it's not guaranteed
some fish will grab the bait and run with it, some swallow it without moving and you don't feel anything until they swim off
if you take the slack out of the line so the egg sinker is snugged up against the bead/swivel so you feel any bite as soon as possible, it's basically the same as using a 3 way swivel
>>
>>2786161
Having no clue what it's actually used for, it looks like something you would drop straight down from a boat and lift up and let it flutter like a dying fish. That's how I imagine it acts at least, I don't know why the hook is on the mouth otherwise.

out of bait and don't want to go to the tackle shop. what's your go to grocery / convenience store solution? I'm fishing saltwater but I'll take all suggestions
>>
>>2786238
I suppose you could vertical jig it from a boat or pier or whatever. That sort of bait is supposed to simulate a small baitfish feeding on the bottom. To cast and retrieve like an iron, just yeet it as far as possible and rip it back as fast as you can, you are trying to elicit a reaction strike with the flash and motion.
>>
>>2786245
Shrimp or squid. Or chicken neck/chicken wing and use that to catch a live crab to use as bait.

Irons are made for the beaches. If you can find predator fish moving a school of bait, and rip this lure through the bait, something will smash it.

What kind of gloves do you wear when fishing in really cold weather?
I guess some gloves with detachable finger tips for casting. But what do you do when you actually catch a fish and have to touch it or even submerge it in the water to release it?
>>
>>2786348
You get used to it.
>>

>>
>>2786348
>>2786350
I haven't gotten used to it, and my boss, a dedicated wintertime fly fisherman has gotten some significant nerve damage from frostbite. I've got health problems and get cold fairly easily, but I fish all winter long. I bought some TruLite or something lite fingerless merino gloves. They are really comfy and keep warm when wet, as is said about wool, but they started to come apart on my first day. This is because I was holding the line in hand while stripping. FishMonkey has fingerless wool gloves with a leather palm that I'd like to try, but I'm pretty sure that the fingers don't articulate. Simms has fingerless wool gloves that look promising due to the palm. I bought a pair of Scheels neoprene gloves, and based on my research, they are by far the best waterproof gloves there are. Other waterproof ones like Clam's, which look similar to KastKing's, are ultra thick and totally stiff. I had trouble feeling anything yesterday when I tested the Scheels gloves, but I think they will be the best option when fishing a trout stream in freezing weather. Last year, I wore cotton glove liners. They didn't reduce sensitivity and kept me warm generally.
>>
>>2786369
P.S. I was fishing a spinner on a trout stream a few days ago, so I had a net. The lure got stuck in the net and took a long time to remove. I think nets and single hooks are the way to go in the winter so as to minimize handling.
>>
>>2786348
I don't do anything when temps are above freezing, I have good circulation so I'm only concerned about actual frostbite, but I wear a set of nitrile gloves to keep the wind and water off my hands, and if that's not enough to keep my fingers warm, I'll have a pair of choppers to keep my hands in until I need fine motor control.
>>
>>2786348
one of the most important things is to have something to dry your hands off when they get wet
if you are stripping fly line and your hands are constantly somewhat wet, then you need good gloves, i got some inexpensive fingerless rag wool military surplus gloves, they're somewhat durable
if it's so cold you are risking frostbite in your fingertips then you have to force yourself to take breaks to warm your hands up and/or avoid methods like fly fishing where you are stripping wet line through your hands constantly
bring pocket handwarmers, those disposable chemical ones or a reusable battery or fuel one

>>
>>2786360
Maybe it's an ego thing...But I never try to exaggerate the size of the fish I catch. If I catch a dink, I take a picture of a dink, if I catch a lunker I take a picture of the lunker. The measurements in my landing net will tell the tale either way. I also don't take selfies with the fish I catch, just the fish. So yeah...I'm pretty sure it's an ego thing.

Either way, I saw your picture and it made me think of the meme I'd seen the day before on a hunting forum and it made me chuckle. So I thought I'd share.

Adding onto this, there are plenty of reviews on youtube, a lot of them bullshit, but still they can give you an insight to the kayaks function on the water. For a first, either get it used like anon here is suggesting or just wait for a sale at Dicks or Academy.

Just got the kayak I was planning on upgrading to today since it was on sale, just a shame that nature said "fuck you" and decided to hit us with a hurricane. I sat on it on the ground though, and damn is it proving as an improvement comfort wise.

I just calculated the number of spots I have fished in this calendar year: 79 spots. 0 times I've been asked for my license (I was reminded to have one once by the caretaker of a pond, but he is just a volunteer.). Some spots are on the same body of water, such as a creek, reservoir, or river. But some spots, such as a series of ponds near each other, are counted as a single spot. I was kind of a NEET for much of the year.

There are fish and game walking the parks and cruising up and down the river in boats and personal watercraft all summer long. I actually got checked less this year than I have in some previous years.

gulp shrimp 2inch works really good on a 5-7 gram jighead just bump it along the bottom, for hard lures 60-90mm minnows, walk the dog lures or small 50-70mm poppers. you don’t need heavy lures for them in the med a 15 gram-20gram is more than enough even for a 5 kilo seabass

Awesome amberjack & King Mackerel bait
>>
>>2786903
King mackerel is one of the main targets of people using trolley rigs to the extent that they're referred to as king rigs in north Carolina:3
>>
>>2786892
Functionally, the advantages of a baitcaster are that it’s easier to cast a heavy rig without developing a finger callous holding the line while you load up your cast, they can also reduce spool friction, which will let you cast further if spool friction was your limiting factor, and it’s easier to feather the spool with your thumb to make a cast fall short of its ballistic trajectory exactly where you want it. They also are double shear instead of single shear, so they are stronger for their weight and size.

In trade, they are significantly easier to create line tangles with and they have greater system inertia, which can reduce how far you can cast if that’s the limiting factor for your casting distance.
>>
>>2786908
so in short
Spinning reel= easier to use and longer is able to cast longer distances?
Baitcaster= more precise casting and can hold more weight despite their small sizes?
>>
>>2786919
Yes
Though if you're trying to bomb long surf casts then a conventional reel is the way to go

>>
I caught two trout today. Here is one of them.
>>
>>2786940
typically hard baits from tsurinyoa are good, often times they are sold as OEM house brands in some places.
softbaits work good, sinkers for me are not economically viable to buy from ali, metals work good considering they are just usually a shaped piece of lead. worth considering that hooks and splits that come from ali are total garbage
>>
>>2786940
owner mosquito light hooks and gulp minnows
size 6 hook and 2.5inch minnows for small fish. size 1/0 hook and 4inch minnows for big fish. dropshot rig with 3/16oz-1/4oz sinker. this is fishing on easy mode for freshwater year-round. for hardbaits get rebel pop-r and a heddon zara puppy or super spook boyo. those are tried and true topwaters. crankbaits are more skill/specific use that people like to think.
>>2786892
baitcasters are better for pinpoint accurate casts with heavier baits(like 1/2oz and up) because you can slow it down before it goes too far and hits the bank/target. the only way to stop a spinning reel when you cast too hard for your intended target is to grab the line mid air and jerk it to a halt, which can end badly with heavier baits due to line stress. palming a baitcaster for too long does make my hand cramp up near the pinky, and I know two boomers who exclusively used baitcasters for 40+ years and they both have arthritis that literally looks like they are palming a baitcaster. it cannot be coincidence..once you learn baitcaster you will see the places it shines, but I still prefer spinning and use it most of the time for comfort sake. I should probably adjust my grip to be more like the old spincaster setups but then it just feels unbalanced like it wants to roll over.

Went trout fishing in the stock pond this afternoon. I wasn't in the best spot, but I got zero bites. I was fly fishing and had some uncured week old eggs under a bobber. I've never fished eggs, but they seemed to be in great shape. I got interrupted by a scam call by my web host, so I went home. Then, a meeting got twice delayed, so that was all the fishing I did today. Next week, I plan on taking a fly fishing trip. Should be good fun.

How do you guys know when youre doing something wrong vs. when the fish just arent biting? I've only ever been fishing solo since I started this year and I consistently fail to catch anything. Feels like theres so many autistic parameters that go into how to fish that I'm just consistently fucking something up.
>>
>>2787075
Hard to say without knowing a bit more. What are your water conditions like? clear, cloudy, completely muddy? Still water(lake, pond) moving water(river, stream) or ocean? Are you using lures or bait? Can you see fish that you're not catching? What time are you going and how long are you staying? Are you trying multiple spots or just one? Are you fishing conventional or flies?

If you can see fish and you're not catching them, you're doing something wrong. wrong lure/bait, wrong time of day or year, wrong presentation of the lure, not letting your bait sit long enough. If you can't see fish, it could be all of the above or they just aren't there. Just about any body of water that remains all year will more likely than not end up with fish in it. What type or how many, if it's not managed, is anyone's guess. But if you're fishing in managed waters, they're most likely stocked along with whichever natural species live there. In those cases, you know the fish are in there, it's just a matter of finding what they like to eat and when, where they like to hang out and when. Check local bait shops for fishing reports on your local waters. They'll usually tell you what's biting on what, if not where exactly. Watch some videos on how to read the type of water you're fishing to give yourself a better chance of fishing where the fish are more likely to be.
>>
>>2787075
you can do everything right and still not catch anything. sometimes theyre not hungry or they dont give af. fish have lazy days too.
>>
it really depends on what kind of fish you're targeting, but for most fish. being in the right place at the right time is like 75% of the "skill." unless you're doing something very wrong, multiple techniques should be effective so you don't really have to overcomplicate it like some people do. sure, fish can be harder to catch at certain times, but you're not gonna "not get bit" because it's the wrong "moon phase" and shit like that. the biggest tip is to know where the targeted species are MOST likely to be during certain seasons, although not all fish follow that trend. aside from that it's just gonna take experience to learn different patterns, and most importantly what style of baits you just tend to have better luck with. the times where I get skunked are usually when I'm being hardheaded and refuse to change up my tackle and try new things, but that's because I have preferred methods even though they might not be the best for a given day. people really like to overcomplicate things when teaching on YouTube videos for example, the only real 100% important thing to learn is what fish do in the extreme hot and extreme cold, and maybe spawning behavior. that eliminates the majority of your bad luck.

Realized all the trout I'd been catching in this "stocked pond" recently have all been wild and not stocked, which makes sense why I only find groups of very small numbers. I feel kind of bad now.

Anyways, any of you guys catch a brown trout from the bank before? There's at least one where I've been fishing rainbows that I want to catch but doesn't seem interested in anything I'm throwing. It chased a size 2 vibrax spinner for a little but wouldn't take the bait.

Is a 9wt fly rod for Bass overkill? I have a 9wt for saltwater and I think it would be fine to toss heavier deer hair poppers or dumbell eye streamers, or should I look for a 7-8wt?
>>
>>2786256
Constantly moving. Unlike bait, fish don't naturally gravitate towards lures since they are purely a motion-based imitation, so cover as much water with them as possible
>>
>>2786256
Depends on the lure. I recently started using spinners and they're working well for me. I caught four perch on the same blue spinner doing the same retrieve over about 30 minutes.

I would definitely fish with the 9 WT before buying something else, but yeah, it's a little overkill from everything I've seen.

How does one even fish one of these? Do you tie to the side with the hooks or the other side? Is it basically a spoon but with 2 in-line hooks rather than a treble?

you vertical jig it from a boat
>>
>>2787411
nta but what if you are on the shore?
>>
>>2787414
not really ideal unless you're fishing from a jetty or something I guess. it's essentially a spoon but a type that you drop and lift instead of one you retrieve. they are meant more to draw attention when they flutter while falling. a spoon you retrieve is much better for shore fishing.
>>
>>2787411
>>2787426
Whoops lol. I got a bunch of spoons off Temu and decided to try this out to see how it goes. I'll use it for ice fishing or something like that since I am exclusively from shore

I don't see why you couldn't put a snap swivel on it and fish it like a normal spoon, it may behave erratically I guess.

It’s good for fast pelagic fish, jacks, Spanish mackerel, Tuna species, Bonito You can add a treble on the small ones < 60 grams to avoid losing to toothy predators.

mono mainline? could be the problem for sure if so. mono stretches so it could literally be bouncing back on itself within a cast and tangling

>>2787521
do you mean getting tangled in the hooks? if so just remove the front hook and try. and don't use a swivel because that adds weight to the front which makes it want to cast nose first or spin mid-air instead of like it's supposed to. a lot of rapalas come with hooks that are way too big and it causes all sorts of tangles. both hooks frequently getting hung together, front hook getting hung on the lip, etc. pic rel came with hooks that were noticeably larger and they would get all fucked up damn near every other cast. I dunno what they were thinking. rapala makes good lures but a lot of them need tweaking. as long as it doesn't cause undesired changes to the action, I almost always remove the front hook from small hardbaits. helps to get snagged on shit underwater less and lose your lure also.
>>

GO VOLS
>>
>>2787548
Front hook gets caught on the lip occasionally but the back hook wraps around the line. Shit is annoying, it looks like it swims nice when it actually wants to work.

That one in image is about the same size by the looks of it, different lip though. I might try removing the front hook next time I go out and see how that does.
>>
>>2787555
it will help keep the rear heavier, so it should fly better when casting.
>>
>>2787557
The cast doesn't seem to be the issue honestly, I can toss it out a few feet in front of me and it will swim fine, but I toss it out the same few feet and let it sink for a few seconds and it just twists on itself immediately, like the nose is just too heavy in general. So yeah maybe taking the hooks off the front will help that.
>>
>>2787560
that's weird, but maybe it will solve the issue. I don't see why that would happen though. if anything, the mono should make it sink more nose up.
>>
>>2787563
> if anything, the mono should make it sink more nose up
That was also my thought, I've tried this same lure about a dozen times now to the same exact results everywhere though, I've ruled out user error at this point I guess.

I finally caught my first fish on my Echo Lift!! And it was on an elk hair caddis I tied! This was my first time bringing my actual fly rod up to my little mountain creek. I had been just using my tenkara rod. But my brother in law stepped on and broke it on accident the last time I was up there. So I brought my real fly rod up there today. Wow! What a difference!! I could easily reach all the spots I could barely reach with the tenkara rod. And I could reach spots my tenkara rod couldn't dream of hitting. And it cast SO much better!! And since both rods are 9ft I already knew my casting limits. To top it all, I caught a king of the creek! 13in! I usually pull out 6-8in trout out of there. My biggest before this one was 10in and I thought surely that was the upper limit of this little creek. But there are apparently bigger ones in there!

Every fish you catch on a weeb stick you can catch on a regular fly rod. Not every fish caught on a regular fly rod can be caught on a weeb stick, however.
Congrats on the stud trout, doubly so for getting it on a dry you tied.

Very nice. If you're relatively new to fly fishing and casting this is a really good playlist to check out in terms of casting techniques. I really suggest the backhand cast and the double haul videos specifically, the latter especially so if you think you might migrate to larger bodies of water or saltwater.

>Every fish you catch on a weeb stick you can catch on a regular fly rod
I know, you're the one that talked me into the Echo Lift several months ago. But I already had the tenkara rod. It's just a cheap $15 amazon one, not an expensive japanese one. And If I hadn't caught that first little creek trout on it, I probably would have never actually considered an actual fly rod. So that's what I had been using up there. It's only 12in collapsed and as thick as my thumb. So it was easy to carry with me up there in the mountains. The lift wasn't that much more difficult though, I'd just never brought it up there before. Practicing on both has also led to casting improvements and a better understanding of the fundamental physics involved on both. But now that the tenkara rod is broken, I don't think I'll replace it. I was just super impressed at how much better the actual fly rod functioned. And like I said in the first post, having learned my casting limits with the tenkara rod it was simple to transition to the traditional rod. Roll casting was a dream and with the fly line and leader It was just a complete game changer. Thanks for talking me into it!!

>>2787779
Thanks! I've watched them. I am still relatively new, less than 6 months. I've got the basic cast and roll cast pretty much down. At least, I'm not wanting to break the rod and throw it in the trash anymore....lol. And I can get my fly in the general area I'm aiming for, though I won't be winning any competitions any time soon :P I have not practiced hauling and feeding line is still a mess. I need to do some more exploring to find some better spots that I can get to the Sacramento in my car. Most of the ones I know are an hour drive. The rest have heavy bank cover. So anything but a roll cast is not very usable.
>>
>>2787808
How do you like the Presso? I'm looking a pack rod and they have a few 4-piece Presso models
>>
>>2787815
it's alright
i say that because i think i misjudged it's intended purpose, i fish larger stocked trout ponds/lakes rather than smaller creeks/streams, and it just doesn't have the backbone to cast heavier things further
i also can't speak for the 4 piece models, i got a two piece just for ease of setup because i don't need to pack it anywhere
that said i did get into some 1-2lb trout on it, and landed some, but it was quite challenging because again, the rod lacks the stiffness to ensure a good hookset on larger fish
that was the rod i was using when i had something i hooked immediately do a run that stripped ~30-40 feet of line then throw the hook with some intense head shakes
i like to imagine it was one of those mythical 5+ lb. holdovers, but i'll never know
maybe it's better for panfish and small trout
>>
>>2787782
I got a trout and some bites. They weren't wanting anything I was throwing but I probably would have had success with a fly, they were snatching bugs on the surface but ignoring me.
>>
>>2787815
I also have a two piece ultra light presso. Similar experience to anon >>2787817
would say the rod lacks backbone and is therefore highly hook specific. I find success with it as an inline spinner rod for the river throwing number 2 mepps. But I did land some stupid large fish on it at times. Big river smallmouth and a carp once so once the hook is in there it can do its job but you don't really feel particularly in control lol. I bought mine when a local fishing store was liquidating merch and it was on a deep discount paid less than 40 dollars Canadian with taxes included for a 2 piece 6'6" ultralight presso spinning rod.
>>
>>2787813
You're asking about me? I steal about 1:1 value of lures every time I buy lures.

Buying a couple strike king spinners for some bass? That whopper plopper is going in my pocket.

Personally, I fish a lot of heavily weeded areas with a lot of trees, those trees have eaten many lures, so I mostly just bottom fish lately. The weeds are annoying but at least you don't lose shit every few casts to a wind gust pulling your line over a tree and your lure has double trebles so you're fucked.

I have pulled so many lures out of the trees, I use them too, so that's another way I go about it.

Load the rod with as much lead as you can cast and go do distance casting with it. If it got bruised in transit it's better that it explode during proof testing while the warranty is still good than while you're fishing.

On the cheap, no money? You can literally use these. And eat whatever you have left on the way home. They work for largemouth bass, catfish, not shitting you. Al you loose is hooks and sinkers.

I'm thinking about making some of my own, except flavored with fish sauce or something, instead of sugar. Easy to make, and you can buy the molds for like 5 bucks. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether they'll turn out right with some salty, oily ingredient substituted for sugar. I kind of get the feeling it probably won't.

this happens sometimes when you order from lots of different places, even places that you've gotten a rod tube from before. The only place I'm pretty sure doesn't do this is tacklewarehouse and probably tackledirect. Amazon is notorious for it, that's why you see so many bad reviews for rods on Amazon and why I never buy rods from there. A LOT of rod manufactureres, even high end ones ship directly from themselves to the retailers in triangular boxes, and I think sometimes they just reuse those boxes. if there is ever a place I'm buying from and they have "additional comment" when ordering, I tell them to ship it in a tube. also, rod/reel combos ship in boxes from my experience, but I've never bought a combo from tacklewarehouse or tackledirect so maybe they take the reel off and ship it separately so the rod will fit in a tube, who knows. but yeah... bad business practice to ship in anything other than a tube. doesn't make sense and it just puts a hassle on the seller, don't understand why they would want that drama. companies should start offering a little money back for returned rod tubes or something, so many go in the trash.
>>2787815
not those anons that have it but I've seen many people claim that the 4 piece model is noticeably stiffer than the 2 piece. the 2 piece is a legitimate ultralight, I think that's why people are suprised when they find out how floppy it is(not sure why)

At work, waiting for water to become steam, I am thinking about fingerless gloves for fly fishing. I need gloves. My fingers get cold at room temperature sometimes. I bought a pair of First Lite Merino fingerless gloves, and they are awesome. The problem is that they get wet and breakdown easily. I don't like Simms' 60% nylon 40% wool fingerless gloves. They're not warm and don't feel the best, but they are more durable. I just found a synthetic Simms convertible fingerless glove that might work. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

It's an erie tributary Lake run rainbow, somewhere around 2 feet long. Caught swinging a barbless fly on a glass rod with a click and Paul reel. I think I traumatized a wealthy old dude when I came in with my ""purist"" bullshit and then brained the fish. I also apologized to corpse for misgendering it and that didn't seem to make him any more comfortable with the situation.

>>
>>2788138
Wow!! That's a huge rainbow! Congrats! I saw one jump this evening that looked to be at least 18in long. It jumped several times, full body out of the water. Not sure what it was eating, I didn't see anything flying or on the surface. I threw a couple different hoppers and an elk hair caddis at it until I couldn't see my fly anymore. I only had about half an hour there before the sun set, so it was a very short fishing trip. It never tried for any of the flies I threw at it. I'm not even sure it was still there, it was too dark to see in the water that far away. It was my first time at that spot, I'd heard about it, but hadn't ever been. I went tonight just to take a walk and check it out. But as soon as I saw that trout jump, I high tailed it back to the car to grab my rod....lol

Colloquially called Steelhead because of their simulated life cycle In the great lakes.
It's a stocked non-native trout in all honesty, but they taste good.
Pic related, she ate the pink one
>>
>>2788168
Ah, yes, the trout I saw would also have been a steelhead. This was in the lower Sacramento, the original home of the steelhead. Though, the McCloud no longer runs to it because of Shasta reservoir. And they're reintroduced rainbows from stocks that were sent around the country(and world) after all the fish here were poisoned because of industrial waste, primarily from gold mining, in the late 1800s. We now have stocked and naturalized steelhead that run the Sacramento. We can only keep the stockers with clipped adipose fin. All wild born are required to be returned unharmed, preferably never removed from the water.
>>
>>2788170
Also, I've never actually caught a "steelhead" all of the rainbows I've caught have been under 14in. And according to fish and game they're not steelhead until they're over 14in, an in anadromous waters. The lake bound rainbows in Shasta aren't called steelhead regardless of size.

I was fly fishing the other day. No luck, but the day before that was nice. Anyway, my fly, a nymph, was dangling, and it got stuck the knee of my waders. I submerged myself in water and didn't feel wet. I tried the light lest from the inside and didn't notice anything glaring other than the far left hole looks worse than the others. I know the hook didn't go past the barb but definitely penetrated. What should I do? Regardless, should I buy some of that aqua whatever to have on-hand?

Wherever that is, see if you can find a depth chart for it. Look for steep drop offs, shallow water very close to deep, abrupt rises and dips in the bottom. Also any clues you might have to bottom conditions, like is it rocky or sandy. Look for anything different than the rest of the lake. That's where the fist tend to be.

Good luck.

Your "steelhead" rainbows are closer to proper Steelhead than my 'Steelhead" yours are restocked natives or close enough to it swimming in a river they're supposed to be in, mine are non-native stockie fucks infesting a river they technically shouldn't even be in, put there by the state as an artificial population for sport fishing and harvest.
I'd feel bad killing your trout. I don't feel bad killing these trout. Your trout are cooler.

Fly fishing 'purists ' are the annoying pretentious types who will complain about anything but dry flies, it's kinda hard to explain.
Basically I lightly chatted him up in the parking lot, we were both swinging flies, we complained about bobber fishermen, then he didn't seem to like that I killed that fish cause that's contrary to the "keep em wet" catch and release purist things. It's like if a necromancer decided to dress like a cleric, complain about warlocks and orcs, then raise the grave yard behind the church.
>>
>>2788226
>didn't seem to like that I killed that fish cause that's contrary to the "keep em wet" catch and release purist
I think this is one of the main issues that gatekeeps fly fishing from being more accessible to people. It's seen as an uppity sport like horse polo, or how lacrosse used to be considered a private school sport. Most people just want to go out and have fun catching fish and maybe even eating them and see fly fishing as a "gentlemans past time" and if we got rid of that mindset more people might be interested. I love fly fishing and I'm the furthest thing from a "proper posh young lad." Besides the price point of gear compared to conventional fishing methods, thats the biggest obstacle, and maybe learning to cast, initially.
>>
>>2788206
creaturebaits like a brushhog or brush baby usually get me good results.

I'm so happy I bought a house in a neighborhood full of ponds. Just landed a decent bass on a black/blue mini spinner. My kid is in the picture otherwise I'd post it.
>>
>>2788227
Honestly I like a certain amount of gate keeping, it keeps the mongoloids out. Every time I encounter another fly guy it seems to be an overall pleasant exchange. I actually can't recall any negative shoreline interactions with fly guys. I can, however, think of more negative shoreline interactions with spin guys than I can think of positive interactions. The fly guys stop and chat, share about how they got their fish, and give setup advice with a mutual "I'm not here to step on anyone's toes" mentality. The spin fags come in like they own the river, set up 50 feet from you, get passed off that you're fishing too close to them, and cause a scene because they're scared you're gonna catch "their" fish. It's like motorcycle riders hating cagers, cagers are the lowest common denominator.
>>
>>2788226
>artificial population for sport fishing and harvest.
Originally, they (along with salmon) were introduced to control ale wife. Now, they can't stop because they do a good job and are immensely popular. I wonder what the effect on PNW tourism would be if Great Lakes steelhead and salmon were discontinued.
>>
>>2788227
>Most people just want to go out and have fun catching fish and maybe even eating them and see fly fishing as a "gentlemans past time" and if we got rid of that mindset more people might be interested.
I agree that demystifying fly fishing could lead to broader appeal and greater numbers, but there are a lot of people who want to fly fishing without ever having fished. The pretentious factor appeals to them. I think companies like Echo are making fly fishing more accessible and expanding the sport beyond trout. I'm very happy about that.
>>2788252
>The spin fags come in like they own the river, set up 50 feet from you, get passed off that you're fishing too close to them,
50 feet? I had one set up just outside my 6 foot social distance bubble. He was from the subcontinent and had 3 rods. This was a trout pond, and there was tons of room.

Top one looks like a jerkbait, the packaging should say more. Some are suspending, meaning they hang out a few feet below the surface, some are topwater. Either way, its up to you to jerk them around to attract fishe
Bottom is a jig, Ive used similar ones to slayyyyy flounder just bouncing it off the bottom slowly.
>>
>>2788661
Top one is a sinking, how do I avoid snagging?
>Bottom is a jig
Can I use this on a breakwater, do I cast it out far away?
>>
>>2788664
>how do I avoid snagging
Don’t run it into things. Easy to say, more complicated in practice, there are really no tricks to this other than “don’t cast into snags” and “don’t let sinking lures run into the bottom hard”. It’s mainly tricky because fish like the bottom and snags, so you will be at your most productive when you are just barely avoiding snagging.
>Can I use this on a breakwater, do I cast it out far away?
The kind of jigging >>2788661 mentioned is best done over smooth soft bottom slowly, the breakwater may or may not be near bottom like this where you live. One of the main benefits of jigs is weight. Weight lets you cast further, get down to the fish faster, fight current better, etc etc. I would try yeeting it off the breakwater, sure, but be cautious about the bottom until you know the bottom’s character. It may cost you a few jigs to learn the bottom’s character if you can’t find a mentor/buddy that knows the area.
>>
>>2788669

>>2788312

>>2788307
Oh it was for alewife? They must have done a good job, I don't hear about alewife I lake Erie, everyone always talks about how they get fat on shad and emerald shiners
>>
some fish have read meat, some have white meat, others have yellow or orange
What's the difference between all of them?
>>
Give me your trout recipes. I might keep one this year and want to try a new recipe.
>>
>>2788692
A lot of it is texture difference, but mostly it's diet. Salmon have more fat than most white meat fish, but you also have fish like carp which are dark red and gamey tasting instead of tasting like a delicious red tuna.
>>
>>2788697
Does the color has to do with how much fat they have?
This comes down to how some people like white fish meat instead of red trash fish, I myself don't understand the difference, both taste nice for me (I think Salmon tastes the best)
>>
>>2788706
It depends on the fish.
>>
>>2788707
Then why some people avoid trash fish? what makes them "trash" to begin with?
>>
>>2788708
A trash fish can be any number of things to different people.

>It might be invasive
>It might be a bottom feeder
>It might taste bad
>Might have too many bones
>Maybe it's prone to parasites
Some people refuse to eat catfish, and some people love fried catfish. Who fucking knows man.
>>
>>2788710
>>It might be a bottom feeder
Ah I know this one, they eat trash after all and live in contaminated rivers
>>
>>2788712
Maybe if the people who complained about "bottom feeders eating trash" would stop throwing their trash into the water then they wouldn't be trash eaters.
>>
>>2788715
The fish I'm talking about are Mullets, locally they are considered a trash fish because they eat anything in the local river, some fisherman say that they prefer to fish them from the sea instead.
The local river hugs my city which is very turistic, so it gets a lot of trash, there are so many mullets here that you can see school's of them from above https://youtu.be/beFpg4It5Gg?feature=shared
I think people in Florida like them?
>>
>>2788712
>>2788718
Carp are like that too but people eat carp. Poles and Jews buy or catch them live, toss them in a huge tank, kiddie pool or bathtub and then feed them corn for like 3-4 days to flush out all the bad shit. Carp is actually pretty good, I've had gefilte fish because the deli closest to me is Jewish and that shits really not bad at all.

I'm responding late but when I use jigs for flounder on a relatively smooth bottomed area, not sure what the seafloor is like near your breakwater. I cast pretty far and jig it back slowly. Fish usually hit it on the fall. I drew a picture because I'm drinking early and dont know if I'd be able to explain properly.
>>
>>2788738
thanks for the reply
I use soft plastics with jigheads like this and I get snags, not saying it doesn't work, is just that I want to avoid it in the future

Skid, I have access to a deep discount for a prestigious fly rod company. I can get an even deeper discount on a euro rod if I order quickly. Do I spend almost $300 on it? I can get a 3 WT or 4 WT. I'm thinking 4 WT, but is that wrong? I don't know if I will like euro nymphing, and I was planning on getting a 6 WT as my next rod. Should I let this one pass by?
>>
>>2788790
That's a tough call.
What do you already have and what do you target?
>>
>>2788798
4 WT Echo Lift and 8 WT Echo 84-B. I started fishing in local warmwater creeks and ponds. Lately, I've been doing more trout fishing. The 8 WT is for warmwater species. I was thinking about a 6 WT for a mix of warmwater and the few big coldwater streams. I love fishing streamers because of how active and unfinicky they are, no indicator or floatant. I hear euro nymphing can bring in a ton of fish, especially in winter, so that might be fun. Given the nature of the situation, I'll be purchasing this deeply discounted rod sight unseen, but do let me know what weight you'd recommend, should I end up buying a nymphing rod.
>>
>>2788840
Euro nymphing is effective, I'd get a 4 weight euro rod personally.

>tons of bass, snakeheads, catfish, invasive shit, wild snapping turtle that let me feed and handle it, even otters on occasion
>had fished whole life but didn’t really have reference for what was considered a big fish of each species just either threw T rigged senkos or used chicken hearts as bait
>looking back the bass were all around 3-5lbs (not huge but these days finding a 5lber in a residential canal is uncommon for me due to over fishing and migrants
>snakeheads were massive, weighed one that was 7lbs and it was about average to the others I’d catch
>would often see the same breeding pairs, recognize them from scars or even catch some that broke me off and get my hooks back
>there was a mating pair of snakeheads I’d see and never caught because they’d break me off each time but these things were easily 5+ feet long
>heads were damn near 8 inches wide
>once threw a mango at one and it seemed to swallow it, or at least attacked it no clue if it spit it out after swimming off
I cringe looking back. I could have held a record. I’m not just remembering them larger than they actually were either, the fucker was able to put a whole mango in its mouth. No idea if that’s genetics or just a really old pair. I actually caught a baby from their fry ball once and raised it for a few months before letting it go again. I’m sure the giants were easily over 10lbs. I just didnt know better back then. I thought that was normal. Now that I try to fish I’m lucky to catch one over 6lbs. I’ll have to go back to that neighborhood. Sucks that I can’t really access that canal without going behind peoples homes though

Go to the YMCA and take a class. Seriously. Even if all you can do is doggy paddle and breast stroke, you'll have a chance to keep yourself above water long enough to make it to shore/close enough for someone to help you or for a fellow boater to arrive. If you don't know how you're going to panic and thats when you flail around and try to climb on top of people trying to rescue you, which means you'll both drown. When I was a lifeguard they taught us to bite anyone who does this and dive to the bottom.
Also ALWAYS wear a life vest. I don't care if they look faggy they'll help you especially if you're on a larger body of water because you have more energy to paddle towards help and can relax while the vest keeps you afloat.
Also remember that actual drownings do not look like they do in the movies. There arent splashes or screams, you slip under and disappear with very little fanfare. Being able to at least keep yourself afloat allows you to call out for help.

And this is a followup for anyone, does it really matter what type of jigs I get for bass? They all have different head shapes and I know some are made to "punch" through grass to the bottom but if I get a few of those and a few round headed ones in like black/purple, pumpkinseed, chart, white/red etc I should be fine right?

I'm at the newly constructed, not quite finished family cabin at the moment. I have had heat and electricity, and just got running water but not hot water. Next week should be high speed internet. I'm 5 minutes away from the nearest trout stream. I was too lazy and tired to get up here yesterday, and today, I made a very, very late start in the newly frigid weather. There's significant drought in this region, but there was supposedly 1.25 inches of rain in 24 hours a couple days ago and who knows how much when I wasn't checking. The water has been very clear and is known to be resistant to getting muddy. On my way up here, I saw some muddiness, which should be a good sign for my chances tomorrow.
