Does anyone use GIMP for photo editing and manipulation? Has it become a "photographer's program" yet, or is it still clunky and freetarded?

>>
I like GIMP it doesn't shit up your computer with sidecar files or updaters running in the background.
I find because it's "destructive" it actually runs faster; as I scroll around a high-res image it's not falling over itself trying to render 50 layers of edits in the resolution I've just zoomed to; essentially a bitmap of the whole image is sitting in your ram ready to go (or at least that's what I assume, i'm not a /g/tard).
Make a duplicate layer of the base image, everything can be masked or blended or screened as much as you like.
8-bit doesn't bother me as I'm only editing already converted raws that are mostly fine for exposure and wb.
If you're a slider-babby you'll struggle, but if you understand what the sliders are actually doing you can just make them yourself.
If you just want to slap a pre-set on a catalogue of images and export them for an event or whatever, use something made for that, but for single image editing it's goated.
>>
Photographers don't really edit their photos anymore, they just fuck with sliders and AI. It's not even photoshop that GIMP has to compete with, it's shit like lightroom and topaz.

Now that's a name I have not heard in a long time. Is that still around?

What is this? Somekind of edge detection algo run on a high entropy image? ig a splash of water or just the surface of turbulent water, i am probably wrong.
>>
>>4487887
Nta. Looks like one of the inbuilt G'MIC effects you can apply in GIMP (and other GNOOO software). They're mostly memes but you can get some neat effects.
>>
At this point Lightroom/PS combo is the only thing stopping me from ditching Windows. I'd love to see an actually good alternative that does everything those two apps do, but there isn't one.

I shoot black and whit 'art' photos.
I print a lot. So i spend a lot of time looking at the details of each photo. especially if they're hanging on my wall.
that being said, i have a conundrum which, surprisingly, isn't well covered on the internet:

>would you say a leica monochrom, or a medium format (with more bits and more sensor real estate) would produce better black and white images?

What is the future of photography /p
If you were starting today what would you buy?
Will stand alone cameras start needing more technological integrated features?
Will cameras push harder for realism and imbedded certificates to show its a real photo or will cameras start integrating inbuilt editing features to add in skies on blown photos etc?
Will standalone cameras start adding features to make short form video?
I’m just worried buying today the world of photography is about to go through its most drastic change in its entire existence and this will occur over the next 10 years
Thoughts?

Most of the damage to photography has already been done. No one respects photographers' time, governments of all kinds are becoming more hostile to photographers be it local ordinances or in war, pay is little, jobs are becoming even more scarce, deals on vintage or used gear are dead, and new gear has gone up significantly in price in the last few years. What the hell is AI going to do besides beat a dead horse?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates there will only be an additional 2,800 professional photographers making a median wage of $20/hr in the next DECADE. That's 280 new job a year for a country of 342 million people. 20 bucks an hour won't even buy you a cardboard box in most cities, and that's the median wage so expect even less than that to start.
>>
>>4487192
Practice with phone you already have (or a cheap new phone). When you want something better and more ergonomic get a 2nd hand canonikon kit, tripod and flash to practice photography.
Perhaps AI can soon be trained to generate a flawless beautifully composed high resolution image based on pointing a tiny phone lens and sensor to general direction of a subject. But I'd suggest trying doing it by yourself if you are interested of photography.
>>
>>4487840

Fucking lol if ai can do that, no matter how shit your photo it just converts it to look like it was taken on a $10k camera.

If I were starting from 0, I'd get the Nikon z5ii/zf or z8. Sheeit, even the ZR shoots great photos considering it uses the same sensor as the z6iii. And the Z mount is the biggest of all the mirrorless brands, so you could adapt Sony/Leica/L glass to it and some adapters even make MF-only glass be able to use AF which is still unbelievable to me.

Film isn't a meme. Filmfags are meme.
Film is an interesting and unique approach to photography that you can't get with digital, and treating it as such can be a nice experience.
Being a delusional faggot about "muh film is three billion megapickles" and failing to see the massive convenience of digital is the meme.

Then photography is perfect for you. You can look forward to spending all your time and money researching and flipping gear, and end up taking pictures of buildings, trees, backs of peoples heads, and rant nonstop to yourself about how all the degenerate commie jews have outsmarted you to the success you’re entitled to as a glorious capitalist of a superior race. Welcome.

System is too corrupt, inept and broken for any major reforms. This is peak 3rd world lmao. In a way its cool tho, at least a decent chunk of people can communicate in english, makes working and learning easier.

this was the absolute peak of digital photography and its all been downhill after here. seriously look at the shots on flickr with this tag and how good they look. mirrorless is super sterile and fake looking, and older than the mkii just were shit to use and had too much noise.

seriously dont sleep on these, 5d mkii and some EF L glass has u covered and then u can spend the rest of the money on travel and taking kino shots.

Yeah these shots are way better, the subject is in focus and the exposure is closer to what it should be. And regarding the background, some lenses have poor rendition of out-of-focus areas(nervous bokeh). Increasing the aperture even more might work but the dof looks quite tight already. Good job in any case.

Nothing at all, I haven't changed the settings on my d3400 and import the photos direct into my computer. I'll keep an eye out for bokeh since I also have an issue with pictures being blurry from hand shakes

Just push B&W if you're going to a Christmas market. Cinestill 800T isn't even meant to be rated at 800, it's just to astroturf zoomers who don't compensate metering for high contrast scenes e.g. gas stations at night

Three sciences about light that'll help you understand: The science of photons, electromagnetic radiation, and bosons

Two technical concepts that'll help you understand how your camera works: How computers work, how chemistry works, and how the mechanics work in a camera. (Anon here like what the fuck computers? Yes anon your digital camera is a damn computer like a smartphone is a damn computer. Hell even in some cases a calculator can be a computer. And the next what the fuck statement is about film photography which is indeed chemistry.)

Last thing is knowing how all the programming and placement of the camera functionality is in your camera. Such as knowing what the hell C4k is in a Panasonic GH5 for example.

You do all this you would know your camera like a mechanic knows a car. Congratulations you are a step ahead in being a photographer or cinematographer.

The most important part about all of this is the hardest part which is does it make sense to you like any other art form?

No. I'll tell you what this is like. When the video game Crash Bandicot came out, the developer knew the PS1 so much he put a hack on the game to allow the game to use more data than it should. From doing that, Crash Bandicot had higher resolution graphics than a lot of games on the PS1. The same thing can happen with a camera. Say you know what am EF mount is. You being the common consumer would (I hate doing this NeoNazi speak but I have to to sell my point on this site) have to go to Jew BHPhoto on this site and Jew Amazon to buy new lenses. So now instead of buying from Jews you can buy a cheap lens from a Japanese guy on eBay (Jannies I tried speaking his language). Now imagine the same with lights. You don't want to buy all this expensive equipment when you know from how light works a few cheap high output lights will do. You know from reading the light meter on your phone at daylight there is enough light under a shade for a photo.
