/fgt/ daily reminder (courtesy by anon): one stop per decade is (generally) bullshit
>negative film ages better than positive
>black and white better than color
>slow films better than fast
>storage conditions (dry/cool) matter more than years
>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops overexposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited
>slide/positive film is shot at box speed or overexposed and pulled.
>if you home develop you can also use benzotriazole as a restrainer for the the first developer in E6 process

i posted about it in the leica troll thread but perhaps better to ask here, is acros II a thicker or sturdier stock than other films? I went to load it the way i load all my other film and it jammed up my paterson reel nasty like. Wound it back up and tried again and jammed again in a different part. and it felt like it was struggling to load the full roll. never encountered that before, first time i use acros II. Thankfully it didn't ruin any shots that i can tell, but i'm not sure if i see any reason to pay more vs using kentmerre lol. Also 35mm not wide enough to properly shoot train cars i found out, them are some long fellas.

Fairly nice conpositions, I would have tried to just capture the paddleboarders or the boats on the second (the overlap reads poorly and takes away from the nice framing you found) and balanced the three subjects better on the first. But I like these, there's something to them. Would love to see more whenever you get some.

finally finished my test roll for my Leica CL, only to have both my local supposedly in-house labs tell me that negative processing is approximately 6 business days. i suppose this is what i get for finally trying to shoot a colour roll. fuck me. how does "in house" take so long lol

Buy a $40 sous vide and a $20 unicolor C41 kit. Takes me 20 minutes to dev 2 rolls at home and it’s like $1 a roll when you do the math.
>>
>>4334181
>20 minutes to dev 2 rolls
with the opportunity cost calculated from assuming i could spend 20 extra minutes at work for OT pay, it would actually be $6.80 per roll :^)

that's hilarious, the one with a shutter that needed to be rebuilt or trashed *was* a leica, an m5 i bought at a garage sale for $50. i sold it on ebay for $700. the meter was also junk.

one look at leica forums shows leica owners end up having their cameras serviced every 50 rolls or so. a high price to pay for having to use goggles for most focal lengths that aren't "for" streetslop.

>>4334181
I’ll Have to see if anyone local has that kit. I don’t really shoot colour but since I got a Leica (even if it’s the poorfag one Lel) I wanted to use colour to see if the lens is all it’s cracked up to be. Supposedly the CL specific summicron-c is every bit as good as other Leica lenses. I still don’t think the economics of colour scale well for my uses but something to investigate more I guess.
>>
>>4334214
I have a decent number of electronic cameras from the 80s and into the late 70s. They work fine. /fgt/ hates them because despite all the excuses and cope, most of these fags are just here to retrolarp, and you can’t do that with a plasticy auto box.
>>
>>4334221
>Supposedly the CL specific summicron-c is every bit as good as other Leica lenses.

It has some glow and isn't amazingly sharp, but I love that lens so much it's all I use now.

Cool some water in the fridge, mix it to get slightly under the target temperature. Stop worrying and start developing. B&W has enormous latitude, it'll turn out fine.

I bought a Contax G1 with the 45mm f/2, supposedly one of the sharpest 35mm film camera lenses of all time, but the quality of the photos is complete dogshit?
The electronics on the camera works fine, it nails focus probably 90% of the time, but when I compare shots of Portra 400 on this camera compared to photos taken on my Canon A-1 with a 50mm f/1.8, the photos on the A-1 are FAR sharper, have a much smoother fall off with the depth of field, and just overall look so much nicer.
So what the fuck exactly is the appeal of this Zeiss lens? Because frankly it's kind of shit.
>>
>>4334557
are you shooting wide open? I haven’t seen experienced that with the 90mm, 90mm results blew me away. try shooting f8-f11
>>
>>4334562
Not often. I stay above f/4 when outdoors. Typically between f/5.6 and f/8
>>
>>4334562
Also could you post some example photos you've taken with this camera if possible? And what film stock do you shoot on it?
>>
>>4334563
example pic?
>>
>>4334557
Post pictures retard. Are they all slightly out of focus or is there something actually fucky going on? Could be your beam splitter is out of calibration which would make it miss focus all the time. Zeiss lenses are known for fairly contrasty bokeh, basically the opposite of fd line of butter balls.

interesting, you mean the blue around the edge of the shirt? is it easy enough to calibrate yourself?
>>
>>4334572
You take the top off the camera, find something easy to focus on precisely 10m away, set the lens marking to 10m then use the set screw to reposition the splitter optics so it's overlapping exactly in the viewfinder, check it at 1m and infinity to confirm. 1m is like your fine adjustment so don't over do it or infinity will be wrong. Do not try to calibrate it at infinity only like you can with SLRs, it doesn't work because yours is a binocular system not a focusing screen.

yeah I agree with the second photo, I was framing and they unexpectedly came into the shot so I went for it. I'll post few other frames from this roll, although the are not very interesting
also I had a dumb problem, visible on picrel, I was using a 49mm filter with 55mm adapter for my 35mm-70mm lens which resulted in this fucked vignette when shooting in on 35mm focal length, I used it with a lens that goes down to 28mm before and the vignette was slight so I thought it would be fine for 35mm
yet I think this shot looks kinda cool

I owned a G1. As a point and shoot left in autofocus it was alright. The viewfinder is abysmal and trying to use manual focus with it wack due to the shitty nature of controlling the focus via buttons. Also no focus aid in the viewfinder other than a distance readout. Ya, most of my m mount lenses look like ass on an a7 too. They show no issues in my Z mount though. Lens reviews adapting lenses to old a7s are useless
>>
>>4335023

I owned a Contax G2 system from new, switched to it from my Leica M in the late '90s, and had the 28, 45, 90 mm lenses. It didn't work the way I liked ... I used it for a year and a half, trying to do what I did so easily with my M and take advantage of its autofocus. Didn't work and the quality wasn't great either. I sold the whole kit and replaced it with another M, brought me back to normal. The Contax's Zeiss lenses were fine, but they didn't do anything particularly special to my eye that was worth the cost of converting them to M-mount (a one-way trip). I've stayed with Leica ever since. And unlike Contax, Leica have always held their value well, and not just shot up in price due to a social media "fad".

There's only a set number of core lens designs and I'll let you guess who pioneered them. Modern glass is the same recipe.

I'm one of the ones from earlier criticizing the G system for its flaws that said there's a reason people adapt the Zeiss G lenses to Leica M. The 45mm f/2 is legendary for a reason. Zeiss is a standard for a reason.

You are on crack bro. Seriously. You think the Chinese give a fuck about Zeiss lens designs? They will reverse engineer and copy anything. The design isn't special because it is OLD. This is 1947 or whenever Zeiss actually stopped making glass and it became a licensed whore. The fact you even compare the brand to Leica is hilarious.

This entire thread has gone to shit and its hilarious cause it's know-nothings with no photos arguing. My point from the beginning is that Zeiss is a benchmark that everyone copies, and there's only a set a mount of lens designs everyone uses and they're rehashes of basically Zeiss, Rodenstock, Cooke, etc. etc.

Nope. Cosina made most of the "premium" models. Ricoh did quite a few OEMs for Kyocera for the cheaper point and shoots as well in both Contax and Yashica brands that they licensed.
>>
has anyone ever used a Domke xray bag for traveling through airport security or have an opinion on them one way or another?

Can't believe how much delusional asspain is ITT from Contax dupes. Leica guys are at least self-aware they are using a technically inferior luxury product, and are happy with what they have. What kind of sad cope is it when the Contax dweebs think that ancient designs slapped together in a le minimal aesthetic like some faggy Apple product is going to compete with a proper 35mm SLR made after the late 80s? I mean so what if a old Nikon F501 with a kit lens can blow your IQ away? Just go out and shoot and enjoy your gear instead of crying about it over and over. I will say that I didn't realize just how overrated the cameras were or that they were made by Cosina. Makes sense though.

The camera system is literally just accessories that you put together depending on your use case. It's a monorail view camera where every piece is interchangeable, even between different camera models. Look. Even the dang box the camera comes in is a multi purpose tool.

I fell for the sunny 16 meme and it was in focus in the TTL viewfinder, so I took that picture.

The rest is shit
No subject, shitty framings, pictures of nothing
But these two are nice
Fucking old people
I hate them but sometimes they look so good in photos
p.s.: I don't personally hate your father or grandpa or anything, I just hate the whole lot of old people
>nothin personnel...kid...
>>
>>4335562
>>4335563
Ok I truly hate old people and your grandpa personally
We can't have more than 2 photos of them without them snorting their fucking nose or some shit
Truly amazing

Here comes the cope.

You should make a new one. I bet it would be a beautiful thread! :)
>>
>>4335594
>positive passive-agressiveness
I wish I could be this cool for real fr

Someone make a redscale themed new thread pls
I'm too lazy to do it
>>
>>4335598
I was being serious! You're always asking for new threads, so I thought maybe you just needed a little encouragement. :D
>>
>>4335585
Nigga did you read what I wrote or did you just imagine I said that so you could pick that apart instead of what I actually said.

Dumbass can't even fucking read >>4335219 properly. I guess I should have spoonfed you exact list of models instead of being vague. No one but Kyocera made their high end models. Point and shoots are not high end, especially first gen. Who made the T2 and T3 bozo?
>>
>>4335585
>your camera sucks because it was made by ____
>okay maybe they didn’t make your camera but they made this other one so your camera sucks

I’m sorry that my Contax G1 upsets you. Just accept that it’s fucking cool. And buy one. It’s like $400.
>>
Speaking of Contax tho, does anyone have experience using the Planar 50 1.4 T* on a camera other than Contax/Yashica? Is it worth getting an Aria to use the Planar 50 or would it be easier to just adapt it to a Nikon F100 or something
>>
>>4335603
I know you were being serious, and I'm not even kidding I find it cool
Keep doing this, you're a nice person and probably generally good to have around
I'm not the guy who asked for a new thread, I'm actually another person
>who has also made like 4 threads in a row in the last few months – 1 or 2 of them just to piss off one anon lmao
>>
>>4335571
I personally hate my father. He has behavioral problems and always refuses treatment. He is now looking for more expensive apartments to fuck off to instead of behavioral treatment that would be fully paid for by all his old person insurance. I only photographed him to test the camera I just got.

Cope replies. Sorry, but no one thinks your lame Cosina shit you overpaid for because of YouTube reviews is cool. Take some good photos with it maybe? If you can.

Kyocer- sorry Cosina made heaps of Contax branded SLRs like the RTS which are worthless. Why not just get the body to match the lens? Or better yet, get a Minolta AF mount and use the exact same designs with even better coatings and build quality and you get autofocus.
>>
>>4335622
Yeah your father is shit and I'm with you on hating him, and hating old people in general (as god intended)
Well your camera is working just fine
Don't even pick up the negatives
All photos are shit and the only 2 ones that aren't are of someone who doesn't deserve all that work
Godspeed, anon

3-5 feet is more than 325mm tho
>>
omfggggg someone just make a new thread i never want to read about contax shit again
>>
>>4335643
A 450mm lens would take roughly 3 feet of bellows to get to a 1:1 magnification. Not very far off from 325mm when considering portraits lenses.

760mm is 200mm equivalent. If you wanted to use that for a portrait around .5:1 magnification you would need over 1m of bellows extension.

As an aside lots of longer LF lenses are designed to require less bellows extension than their focal length. I don't really know the terminology for it. They would be considered tele lenses, right?

ALSO on the other side of that is using shorter lenses for portraiture like a 150mm means your camera is like 2 feet away from your subject with a very short bellows extension!
>>
>>4335630
>well your camera is working just fine even though most pictures are out of focus despite getting them all in focus in the TTL viewfinder while obeying the line-&-circle light meter and the sunny 16 rule outside

Nice one anon. In an alternative reality, I took a photo of that same car, right here. :)

I have a II. I used Ikelite silicone grease, but really any dielectric silicone grease will work. Do the main ring and all the rings on the lenses. They have a separate seal on the back of the lens where it mounts on the body. Also doesn't hurt to put a very thin layer on the seat of the lens mount where that seal goes.

Fresh and salt doesn't matter but after salt water use you will want to clean it in fresh water or let it sit in fresh water for a day to get the salt off of all the seal surfaces where it interfaces with metal.
>>
>>4335974
should I get it serviced, if the rings look good and not flattened?
>>
>>4336713

It's probably fine but remove them and put some silicone grease on your fingers and run it across the seal and its surfaces.
>>
>>4336794
I'm talking about the non-user serviceable seals in the camera, like spindle, advance lever and film counter
