Saul Leiter was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1923 and initially pursued a career as a painter before turning to photography. He moved to New York City in 1946, where he became part of the burgeoning art scene. Although he worked as a fashion photographer for much of his career, Leiter’s true passion lay in street photography. His work, largely unrecognized during his lifetime, has since earned him a reputation as a pioneer in color photography.

Leiter’s photography is marked by a soft, painterly style, which reflects his background in painting. He had a unique ability to find beauty in the mundane, capturing quiet, often unnoticed moments in city life. Leiter’s work focused on composition, color, and texture rather than dramatic moments or stark realities. His keen eye for abstraction and subtlety made his work stand out from more traditional street photographers of his time.

Leiter is best known for his early use of color photography, a medium he embraced in the 1940s and 1950s, long before it was popular in fine art circles. He was a master of light and reflection, often shooting through windows or using rain, snow, and fog to blur and soften his images. His photographs are often defined by layered compositions and muted tones, capturing fleeting, almost dreamlike moments in the streets of New York.

While Leiter’s street photography is now highly regarded, he made his living as a fashion photographer for publications like Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. His fashion work reflected his artistic sensibilities, using unconventional angles and framing that echoed his street photography. The blend of commercial and personal work allowed Leiter to experiment with both form and content, and his fashion images remain influential for their innovative approach.

For much of his life, Saul Leiter’s work was underappreciated, overshadowed by more prominent photographers of his era. However, his work was rediscovered in the early 2000s, leading to a major retrospective at the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York and renewed critical acclaim. Leiter is now considered a pioneer of color photography and a master of capturing the quiet poetry of everyday life. His influence can be seen in contemporary photography, particularly in the use of color and abstraction.

Saul wanted to become a rabbi. Guess the talmud and photography are forever linked
>>
>>4374122
>>Saul wanted to become a rabbi
lying bastard. he told his rabbi dad that he don't want to be a professional jew
>>
Why does jewish photography have the same nonartistic, mentally ill vibes as 4channer photography? Like a schizophrenic was trying to photograph their hallucinations and just shot well composed nothing or random pedestrians when they saw demons?
>no one hates jews as much as jews
what if…
>>
>>4374064
please don't stop anon that's pretty cool (even tho I don't like this guy "style"). I'm not really into street and portrait I think that's gay so he's extra gay. War and Landscapes that's what a real man needs, the horrors and the beauty
>>
>>4374206
the hallmarks of schizophrenia are common among this talmud and ganja ridden profession
>is that a guy with a hat
>im seeing patterns
>i need to document this
>i need to document the connections
vivian maier was a schizoid too

As it should have been, everything you've posted is bad. Why don't you cover a "famous" photographer who took photos that are actually good?
>>
>>4374210
which photographers do you consider good? don't puss out and answer the question otherwise kill yourself
>>
>>4374211
None. I've never seen a famous photographer who actually has good photos. They are all nepo hacks.

This is what you sound like.

As an unbiased party who studied painting and was therefore never told which photographers to like, saul leiter's hobby snapshits fucking suck and it's clear he's a failed painter. The Edward Hopper that couldn't hack it. Every photo is garbage.

His portraiture was mildly entertaining at times, less stodgy than most, but a great deal of it was "safe"

if he were not jewish there's a slim chance he would have achieved posthumous commendations. It's like annie leibovitz. Objectively, mediocre. The social side of art sullies it. Shits on it. Maybe in 200 years the rain will finish washing all that shit away.
>>
>>4374225
congratulation on being monkey subhuman ho doesn't understands photography and also doesn't understands painting. a pussy faggot who can't name a single photographer. kill yourself asap to save yourself from further embarrassment.
>>
>>4374227

Good post
I agree on all points
>>

This crap looks like shots straight out of /rpt/.
>>
>>4374228
Nothing else explains the amount of seethe being generated by people not liking this hack.

Saul Leiter is one of the most frequently copied photographers by leica-fuji-snoy slinging, mist filter, manual lens, "photowalk to nowhere about nothing" gearfags who think they're the englightened ones because they're not supersharp teleprime nikon boomers.

these threads are like shining a light into a deep dark sewer pit and watching all the vermin writhe and shriek. very satisfying
>>4374214
>None
oh i get it, so you want OP to simply not cover anything. /p/ - anti-photography, everybody.
>>
>>4374278
>Someone doesn't like a shitty photographer who only received posthumous accolades, almost like someone was trying to profit off him after he was too dead to sue
>VERMIN! SEWER!
Saul Leiter fucking sucks. This man does not deserve a spot in the history books unless the subject is the destruction profiteering and money laundering brings to art.
>>
>>4374279
At least he actually tried to make art, despite not being very good at it (literal failed painter)

There are worse cases of profit taking (vivian maier, did not even try to make art - the actual artist is the relative curating 1 million snapshits to try and get them to resemble a purposeful body of work so they can receive her overdue money - relative who can't be named without inciting a libel suit)
>>

kek you have nothing to offer the so you bitterly bash those who do. the light is harsh isn't it? keep squirming lel!

You must be pretty worked up if you're typing gibberish broseph, go make yourself a cup of earl gray.

he definitely has a few good ones, but who wouldn't? i feel sorry for the people who idolized him directly rather than looking for who and what inspired him.
