Anybody see any value in this, or is it the photography equivalent of a TikTok dance craze?[EXIF data available. Click here to show/hide.]Camera-Specific Properties:Image-Specific Properties:Horizontal Resolution300Vertical Resolution300
>>4389287The value is not spending money on lenses, not carrying a camera bag, not swapping shit around, etc, just being the total opposite of the people who swear they can not take a picture of a bug without their special bug lens or a field without his special meadows and rivers lens or a person without their special portrait lens. it’s more of a lifestyle choice about not engaging in autistic completionism, just learning to do a good job with what you have and simply enjoying yourself. you’re also meant to get more time to live life and engage in useful pursuits since you shop less, research products less, and dont have gear to fiddle with and tote around. the great irony is a natural born redditor will spiral into perfectionism shopping instead and upgrade his "BIFL" at least once a year. one camera one lens really only makes sense as a functional decision instead of pretentious soi nonsense if you do not upgrade your camera or lens unless they break or it’s been ages and even a cheap middle of the line and out of date camera would be a massive upgrade
>>4389287If I have to look like that guy I'm out.Seriously though, there' some merit to it. It's basically the fundemental concept of anti-gearfagging. Chosing a standard zoom would be plain easy-mode though in terms of difficulty, but would still get the message across. If you went with a prime it would be more difficult, and might make some shots less "perfect" than if you had an appropriate FL, but you would end up being a better photograhper by the end of it. You'd be forced to think about compositions and positioning yourself, otherwise your shit would be shit.I own five lenses and I'm fairly confident if I only rolled around with my 35mm prime, I'd be set for anything that isn't a birb or a paid-grade portrait. The other lenses I have are for convenience for the most part, so the idea in theory is sound to my understanding.[EXIF data available. Who you are or what you use doesn't matter, only what you produce. There's something about this that still feels like it falls into the category of navel staring imo but if it helps you focus on the product rather than yourself/your gear then that's good I suppose.
Cope for virtue signaling poor people.
>>4389287Warning: two cents about to be givenThe way i see it there is some value to this as you'll learn your gear and can potentially get better at photography or grow as a person to really understand where you want to take your hobby. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with the idea.I also think its a disposable fad just like everything else is on tiktok and a lot of people will either give up or not learn anything from their experience which is bad because they could have been enjoying themselves instead.
One year is too long, a month is more than enough to know your lensesIt's not like you're going to discover some secret setting of the lens where it becomes fasterYou shouldn't be changing bodies unless it dies anyway
I spent most of this year with a 25mm manual focus lens. I found a tremendously educational.
I can already imagine some deranged gearfags accepting this challenge limiting themselves to just their A9IV + 18-300mm F2.
>18-300mmez pz
>>4389368That would completely miss the point and yet I totally see someone doing that thinking they're god's gift to photogs.Challenge mode is to shoot exclusively street with 16mm and not get your nose bashed in
>>4389301Camera gear is not a status symbol. Its just a waste. Like smoking pot. Are you rich for paying $100/8th? No you’re a retarded pothead. So too is the gearfag retarded.>>4389368If the camera matches their class, that works fine. Less time shopping, probably doesnt even know what an elmar is. If it doesnt they’re an aspirational tryhard making themselves poor to try and impress other men because they are closet gay. Yea, ALL tryhard gearfags are closet gay. >>4389370Challenge mode would be only shooting fashion with a 50mm and never touching str**t "photography".

>>4389287I did that involuntarily for the past year with a 50mm on crop (~75mm). For my part I realized that I wasn't missing anything but greater depth of field without having to work for it so much. It's surprising how versatile focal lengths are unless you walk the extreme ends. The most important lesson it taught me, now that I've been shooting other focal lengths again, is that outside of the coloration they imbue on a photo based on their unique compression characteristics focal lengths hardly make a difference for my personal photography and neither do lenses and cameras in a more general sense. What I see when I look at my photos is my personal vision expressed across any sort of gear.
>>4389391Almost this but phone shits, old sony colors, and scamrom zooms with flat rendering stick out and I wish i could just delete those photos without feeling a loss. Cant tell modern canon/ff nikon/modern sony/panasonic apart without finding photos that work as AA filter direction tests. In use of course some of these cameras take more shutter clacks or double checks to get an in focus photo than the others
I wish I had a k-mount 50mm.
>>4389398I have at least two lol1.7 smc-a is really good and fairly priced
can't be that hard
>>4389418>only one on 50mmBased Ansel, shame about the trite coffee shop decor phtography

>>4389535These equivalents are diagonal FOVs but the look isnt anywhere near the same because he shot 4:5 technical cameras. 50mm so called equivalent is more like using a 40mm lens in the vertical FOV.

>>4389287I used the same camera and lens for 10 years: a D90 with a 35mm, later I bought an 85mm but 95% of the time I went out with just the 35.BTW the camera died a month ago; still mourning. And Nikon wants 250€ to bring it back, and considering the prizes of modern cameras I may even pay those jews.
>>4391163The guy who owns the best camera shop in my city never bothered to upgrade from his D90.
>>4389287I used a 35mm almost exclusively for about 3 years, I really liked it.
I think it's a good idea for people who are more experienced with photography. I happen to have had this same idea independently. I've decided for my next photography project, I'm going to strictly use 85mm. In part because I think it will reinforce the ideas behind the project, but also I've discovered that as I do more photography, I've really down my favorite focal length to somewhere between 60mm-120mm, so I want to begin to explore these focal lengths more deeply. I think spending a year with it is probably too long, but it all depends on how often you get out.
>>4391284Go a solid half-dozen outings doing that at least I reckon. 85mm sounds like a good FL to use for isolating subjects or compressing backgrounds just a little, without going all uncanny on the subject distance. Not gonna have the ability to do environmental inclusions with your subjects, but that means you'll think more about the subject itself, right? That would be the point after all.As some anons have pointed out 35mm being another common FL to use for this, that would force them to think about environments and subject's position relative to that. Using a fisheye would force you to be artistic and look at the bigger picture so-to-speak. etc. etc.
>>4391312For this project 85mm is about being claustrophobic, while still being a 'human' focal length. It's mean to convey disorientation and agitation, only being able to see parts of the whole, never getting a clear picture of what's happening. But while still looking somewhat natural to human vision.
>>4391150What's wrong with shooting portraits on a 50mm? F1.4 should give you enough bokeh normalfags like
>>439131950mm is alright for group portraits where the extra FoV is needed but you're still about the same subject distance away. Solo portraits lol no go fuck yourself. 50mm is a cope SLR focal length for when boomers wanted a single lens to take their vacation snapshits. You either go longer or wider for any sort of interesting FL. "Bokeh ain't everything
>>4391326as if most tele portraits aren't just subject-bokeh that might as well have been taken in front of a green screen
>>4391150That's neat! Can we see some of your shots from?
>>4391312Haha one of those is my post.
>>4389287Doing it with one lens is a fun challenge for a month at most. For longer-term, 3 primes or 1 zoom and 2 primes is all that you "need". Placing constraints on your creativity is beneficial up to a point, beyond which you're denying yourself opportunities to experiment
>>4389287There's already a thread about to be bumped off the board by jannies useless engagement posts where the anon actually used one lens to take all his photos >>4385989
