The lead-in artificially inflates not only the average ratings of the program, but the show by virtue of just being on holds some of those lead-in viewers throughout the show, losing them as the show goes on. Meltzer coming up with all these reasons, but the truth is the higher a show starts at, the more artificial the show's ratings after quarter hour 1 is, not just the show's entire average.
