Well that was a disasterclass by the privateers. feelsbad
On the other hand, I can't complain about the race when we had nonstop action all around in both Hypercar and GT3, and on an excellent circuit to boot. Sure, it was TWL again but the #6 extended its championship lead and we were treated to some seriously good action so I'm happy coming away from this race
Glad to have watched six hours of kino with you lads, that was max comfy

It was comfy indeed.
What is the take away here? How do the privateer teams learn from this and do better next time out? Don't crash into other cars and the outside of turn 1 has low grip? I guess there were a lot of mistakes with caution procedures so that is something to learn from.
It sucks that the primary strategy is "hope Toyota screw up" which kind of worked with the number 7, but that car even came back to finish 4th.
How are they so good? I wonder if in 10 or 15 years we will find out, they found a loophole to exploit that no one else has figured out. I imagine they will probably do extremely well in Texas, too.
>>
>>142792037
Kubica was done by the faturbo actually, he had a solid run until then.
> It sucks that the primary strategy is "hope Toyota screw up"
Reminder that Penske Porsche still leads, the goodguys #7 toyota is still 3rd in the championship with nearly a racewin amount of point behind, the satanwagon #8 5th with 48points behind the leaders.
And only 3 races left in the season, toyota has only an outside chance at this point.
The TWL doomposting should be aimed towards the cheater penskes.
There is an official privateer championship btw in wec (FIA World Cup for Hypercar Teams) and Hertz Jota is leading it, just nobody knows about it because WEC does not communicating the standings of it or does not highlight privateers that much

>>
>>142796021
I make fun of most Canadian road courses looking like something out of southeast Asia but Mosport is one of the few things in motorsport Canada can really be proud of. There really aren't many experiences like watching cars drop through turn 2 or turn 4 from up close and it's really quite sad to have GTPs racing in fucking Detoilet or that glorified kart track at Indy and not at Mosport.

If you can imagine Mosport actually has 7m more total elevation change than Interlagos, I imagine the drop over the blind crest at 2 is similarly steep to the Senna S.
>>
>>142796433
I never had any idea of the elevation changes in Interlagos until I saw the Senna S during pit walk. It is a huge drop indeed. Unless you buy the most expensive tickets you can't really experience that like you can at Mosport. What I did experience was watching the cars tearing the main straight right at eye level under the grandstands and at sector A.

> The offending article was originally posted on the Dutch and Italian editions of Motorsport.com. In it, Leupen criticized the ACO and FIA for having a BoP process that he said “is not transparent” and called for more “honesty” from the rule makers going forward. “These statements call into question the impartiality of the FIA, cast suspicion on its integrity and cause moral harm,” read the relevant stewards’ bulletin.

> The punishment was a €10,000 ($10,900 USD) fine suspended for the remainder of the season, providing no similar remarks are made by anyone linked with Toyota. The stewards’ bulletin said some leniency was afforded to Leupen as it was the first time the rule forbidding open discussion of BoP has been enforced, but warned that future offenders may not be so fortunate

>How do the privateer teams learn from this and do better next time out?
Like what Hungarybro said, both the Proton and the #83 were on for a decent race until /FAT/ ruined the #83's race and in turn their own due to the ensuing penalty. Even as the biggest /FAT/bro around here, it was a stupid and clumsy move by Andlauer into a rapidly closing gap and they never quite had the pace afterwards to recover from this setback. Barring a spectacular one-off performance at Spa, they struggled to make an impact in the other rounds, usually puttering around outside the top 10 in both qualifying and the races. I remember reading somewhere according to Neel Jani that Proton has seemingly done much less testing, if any at all, compared to the Penske and JOTA crews due to their lack of money. I think this is definitely a cause for their lacklustre performance in both WEC and IMSA, seeing as they never seem to be happy with their setups.
In contrast to Proton, JOTA's managed to wrangle quite a bit of performance out of their 963s and was able to fight for the podium in Qatar and even nick a lucky win in Spa. The #38's been a tad disappointing earlier on in the season, especially Button, but we've seen an uptick in performance in Le Mans and especially Brazil where they could've finished P4/P5 if not for the FCY penalty. Ilott's been rapid in the #12 all season IF he doesn't crack like he did in Imola, Le Mans and now Brazil. I'm still seething at how he's choked away an easy P5 to P8 finish at Brazil, bloody fucking hell. Overall a tidy operation and I can see why Caddy would choose them as their factory outfit for next year.
The #83 Ferrari can't really be counted as a pure privateer but their lineup is admittedly a tier below the #50 and #51. Even then, as Kubica had admitted, they should've been fighting up front with their sister cars all season if not for sheer bad luck and erratic driving (Kubica in Le Mans, Ye in Brazil)

>Proton has seemingly done much less testing... due to their lack of money.
That's unfortunate, I guess they wanted to stay in the WEC prototype devision, but it seems kind of short sighted. Like they took on a challenge they knew they weren't really able to handle.
And shitters for the other teams? I guess, but the Toyotas and factory Ferrari teams have seen some serious shitting both from the drivers and the race engineers. Maybe they just have the money to make up for it a little.
JOTA really has done a pretty good job and they are a solid team, but IDK if they are really on the same level as Ganassi or Andretti, especially from a resources standpoint. Maybe running as a works team will help elevate them to the next level, but I also suspect the car still has some fundamental issues they aren't wanting to go public with.
One thing is for sure, Penske is one serious outfit and they always play to win, so it really isn't surprising to see them doing well. Upon checking I'm surprised to see they are only 4 points ahead of Toyota. It is really annoying that the WEC website and Wikipedia don't list the car number, just the manufacturer and county.

I remember it fondly too and the gear box thing was cool, hell the cars were super cool, but, not to be a leaf about it, I think it's a clear case of rose tinted glasses. I also remember basically being bored with LMP1 because it was Audi wins, lol. It's not like they even had constant competition. They were mostly beating up on small privateer teams during most of that time. I releshed every Panoz win and it was pretty fun watching the Penske RS Spyder Porsches take their lunch money in ALMS for a minute, but even that didn't last.
>their drivers and team members were super likeable
Honestly, I think this has a lot to do with it. Plus it's just one of those things that's more interesting to look back on and say, "Wow, those guys were really good," than it is to see the same guys win week in and week out in real time. Hell, one day people will likely say the same thing about Max and Toyota and the Porsche 919. I guess it's better to remember the good stuff and let go of the bad, but I've always had mixed feelings about Audi. I also always respected them.

When I started watching around 2007 I had respect for Audi, but was not really cheering them, they were the ones to beat everybody seemed to be the underdogs against them.
I was cheering for Poojo then later when Toyota entered I supported the jap (okay I was a toyota supporter already in F1 due to their great looking cars and the ts040 was also really cool, maybe one of my fav WEC lmp1 livery ever)

I was a toyota fan till they switched to the black livery, I really miss the blue-white one

It was only in very specific time windows it was that bad. The races in 2000 the R8 was there and not the R8R were pretty soul crushing to the point every time I see that crocodile R8 it bothers me. 2001 kind of should be as bad but the Champion R8 was sort of in there and Panoz somehow won a couple times, by 2002 I was just annoyed Cadillac wasn't doing all of the races. In 2003 the factory status went away and Joest and Champion were beating on each other and the MG Lola finally fucking worked so you didn't really see domination from there forward.

Not a golden age by any fucking stretch and Le Mans was less competitive than anything I described although the year of privateer R8s that Goh won was kind of neat.

I was just wondering about that a little while back actually. There was a point when the likes of Jaguar, the Toyota TS010 and even some privateer 962s were running them (wheel spats) but they've mostly disappeared by 1993 along with the turbofans for some reason

https://www.roadandtrack.com/motorsports/a30608990/jaguar-xjr-9-wheel-covers/
>The rear-wheel covers "yielded up to 10 percent more downforce, which is dramatic," he said.
>"If you took those off, the driver could feel the difference. So they weren't there for the ride, or a pretty picture."
>"I had discovered that one of the worst areas for leakage was around the rear wheel, so I decided to cover the rear wheel and add a horizontal skirt to the lower edge" Southgate said. Reducing that leakage contributed that extra 10 percent of downforce.

https://www.goodwood.com/grr/road/news/axons-automotive-anorak-having-a-spat/
>Firstly, they were used to reduce the amount of unwanted water and spray entering the wheel arches and disturbing the driven wheels from their operation, along with allowing the track monsters to reach upwards of 200mph on the banking at Daytona and the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans through drag reduction.
>At the same time, the spats maximised the Venturi Effect of the air entering and leaving the wheel arch
>A small but deliberate air inlet allowed the rear tyres and brakes to stay cool and within their operating temperature ranges, but with an outlet to reduce the build-up of unwanted high pressure that would cause inevitable tyre blowouts in long endurance races.

https://youtu.be/sPgDDdwxs9s?feature=shared&t=401
>>
even IndyCar had them fitted in the CART days.

Ed Carpenter is right and perfect tires or more hp won't fix the ovals, only a new chassis will, and of course that would take the entire new TV deal to wait for. >>
>>142813576
Yeah it's a shame that Indycar doesn't seem to have the resources to invest in a new chassis. The teams couldn't afford it.

The irony that Indycar needed cockpit protection more than F1 but were the last to get it because they don't have the same level of investment like F1. This shoehorned in hybrid mid-season "post Indy500" looks amateurish no other series would do a major technical change mid-season like this, the priority should always have been a new chassis with the introduction of the aeroscreen. Not an updated revision to the DW12. American open-wheel racing still hasn't recovered from the split it's all Tony George's fault.
>>
>>142808729
$15 Cadillac hat?
Yes, please.
>>
>>142815260
Even if you scream at them "new chassis" until they do it, you need to realize it won't really solve anything because that "new chassis" will just be a ship of Theseus tub rework that saves maybe 10 or 15lbs and/or makes room for hybrid batteries and not an actual new car anyways. They are absolutely convinced this "our TV ratings are up 0.01% year on year we're going to make it by just doing the same thing" strategy is the future of the sport. They hang their hat on "but the racing is good" when even the slightest thing off in the circumstances of an event kills the racing completely and they put on several snoozefests or caution fiestas every year.
>>

>>142815260
Penske waited too long for the mythical 3rd manufacturer to make the new chassis cheaper and the hybrid more palatable. I think there is a chance that someone at Honda will see that this isn't helping them and make a major change, probably by leaving altogether, but whatever it is I hope it is sooner rather than later

holy shit what a retard post, oh my fuckin god
you are a bit too high on 90s and early öös false memories
wake up anon, the brands you are talking about wont ever go rallying properly again
- Mitsu is pretty much only cares about fuckhuge suvs currently. The lancer died this year, the lancer evo died 10 years ago. If anywhere they go it will be offroad, but they don't actually have money
- Lancia: Just recently been announced they will be an electric only brand, they only do superminis which is only ideal for the lower steps of the rally pyramid
- Subaru: they don't have money, their ARA program is apparently mostly ran by the usa importer, also it's a group n tier car, and again: they have no money

back then they were small brands and even less people care about them.
Realistically Stellantis and VAG or the chinese are the option who will come additionally
>>
>>142813919
They actually do you just stuck your head in your ass lamenting on muh evo memories
They have way more performance models than sub and mitsu together (and no the new eclipse is a fuckhuge suv, not a performance model)

Im still glad I saw it, but the only thing I really miss about the old LMP1 category is the technological development and the raw speed, neither of which make up for the small fields and lack of genuine competition in so many races.
While they try to pretend it's all equal, the new Hypercar category is pretty clearly split like LMP1 and LMP2 with the formula obviously favoring the hybrid, AWD LMH cars. It is closer, but you you have to be an insane powerhouse like the Porsche Penske team to be seriously competitive and they are only doing as well as they are because Ferrari and Toyota keep taking turns spaghettiing or yakisobaing respectively. It will be interesting to see how a proper works team with a 2WD, ICE only configuration does when Aston Martin arrives.

No globohomo hybrid system guarantees it, I'm afraid. It's basically the 936 chassis, so I wouldn't be surprised if they fag out and put one in after a season or 2 of getting BTFO. Still won't help much without the AWD cheater system.

I mean, with enough time and money, they could do it, but the chassis is already designed for the RWD system of the tier 2 cars. It might do OK in IMSA, but Penske is even more potent relatively in IMSA. IDK, maybe they will do well. Heart of Racing is a dam good team and maybe they can tap some Aston Martin F1 tallent for strategy and data analysis and stuff.
Lord knows I want them to kick ass. It will automatically be my second favorite car after the Cadillac, maybe even first. I mean pure V12 kino with no turbo or hybrid stuff, what's not to love.

Yeah, the Cadillacs have always sounded amazing. I got to see the DPi in 2022 and the GTP in 2023, but I wish I got to hear them side by side. Just as a comparison. Sadly, they have a lot of germlins and the way they qualify well and fall off in the race makes me think they have some kind of issues running too close to full power during the entire race. My guess is heat in the drive train. Then there are the fires it's happened, like, what, three or four times now? I hope whoever they go to next year can help fix these issues.
