the average skater could train with a football club and be indistinguishable in a few months, the average footballer could never be a skate pro
>>
>>142937783
I watched it out of curiosity and it seemed like dumb luck to determine the winner, or I guess rather than luck whoever did basic moves they could land consistently rather than trying flashy moves that they got 1/10 times would win
>>
Stonerplank is not a sport and the olympics are 20+ years late to adopt it. They should have done it in the late 90s/early 2000s with peak Tony Hawk, if ever.
>>
>>142937864
Yeah if you don't land it you don't get points
>>142937869
It's a sport which shouldn't be at the Olympics, neither should golf and a bunch of other shit but here we are
>>

That is what I don't understand, either. Skateboard was at peak in 90s and 2000, and they ignored it. And when the sport and the culture around was completely forgotten, now they add it? The whole skateboard in Olympic sound like a 70 years old out of touch boomer trying to sound hip.
>>

It used to be cool in the early 2000. I liked it.
>>

same but it was less about skating more about hanging out with friends who you could drink and smoke with while the pussies were doing real sports or studying at home

this is why it's bollocks as a sport, it makes everyone too worried of not landing things to try anything cool. they should give each skater an 8 hour period to go and pull the best tricks they can manage, and they submit the best stuff they landed that day. edit together a short highlights reel and a worst slams reel and you have a sport i would watch.

I thoroughly enjoyed female skateboard last olympics. Some girls landed 0 tricks. Most managed to land one or two and just slap their shit vs the concrete most of the time. The few who could pull anything were 12 years old japanese girls who default won by just not falling. It was the lowest level olympic competition I have ever seen.

Problem? If this is the age range of peak women's skateboarding then that is how it is. You may look at this group here and think no, certainly that cannot be the world elite of women's skateboarding. Surely no. But they are. These are the best female park skateboarders available.

For now this going through but girls skateboarding may eventually have the same interference that girls gymnastics had. In girls gymnastics, some of the most skilled available were/are too young to compete by IOC rules.

That was Crème de la crème of skateboarding in 1987, before the industry crashed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF3Uf482G7E
This is 5 years later. Notice how much higher the guys are flying. They did it for almost no money because the industry was holding by threads. There was no corporate sponsorship, so no high paying contests, skateboarding wasn't popular anymore (it had been deemed an 80s fad by then) so boards don't sell as much. shoe deals are sparse.
https://youtu.be/mLl3HwACK3o?si=BnUB19n6VPuyiain&t=149
Another 5 years, 1997. More tech, even higher. The X-Games debuting on ESPN in 1995 gave an enormous boost just as the industry was back on the rails.

Honestly every women's sport needs to have one televised exhibition event per year where the best women in the world play against some high schoolers or low-level amateurs just to keep things in perspective.

Like, Imagine if once a year season for the past decade the USWNT got btfo publicly by a bunch of high school juniors and the WNBA champs lost to a JV team and Serena Williams lost in straight sets to like the 356th ranked dude in the world and the women's heavyweight MMA champ got knocked out in the first round by a lightweight man. It would have pre-empted so many stupid conversations
>Is Serna the best athlete of all time?
>no remember how she got her ass kicked every year by some literally who
>oh right
>Could Ronda Rousey beat a male MMA fighter
>no remember she tried and tapped out two minutes in

An infographic with scale references would be funny.
Women's high jump world record is 2.10m. That's very impressive! The men's high jump world record is 2.45. Neat! Also, uh, the men, they uh, they actually start their competition above the women's world record. Meaning the worst guys don't even bother to remove their track pants for anything less than 2.15. That's the warm up jump.

Crazy how mainstream skateboarding is now. I grew up in a beach town where skate boarding was big, most of the kids at school wore skater shoes, even if they didn't skate or own a board. Looking at the skater shoes, now you have all the mainstream companies making them (Nike, NB, Adidas, etc)

There was none of that back then, just indy skate shoe brands

Unless things have changed in recent years that is not my experience with skate shoes. Skate shoes used to have minimum sole thickness for better feel and control. It's the functional reason why skateboarders did not like to use running shoes (durability being the other reason).

Adult female physique, as in gymnastics, is not optimal for skateboarding. Some of the older girls like Roos sweatyslut and Pamela Rosa are still active and still competing. They have not improved. Why? I don't know. They should have. Skateboarding is different than gymnastics, it doesn't necessarily follow that the unique combination of strength and flexibility required for gymnastics, that tends to peak around age 14-15 for girls, also applies directly to skateboarding.
I thought this was more of a generation shift with previous older woman skateboarders having lazy training routines and risk aversion getting blown out by fearless little girls. However, the median competition age has not increased in the last few years. It's still 12-16, 17 tipping over in to geriatric territory.
