Plus most schedules are made years in advance so these schools have no clue if these power conference teams will even be good. Take Memphis for example. They announced in 2021 they would play Florida State. They were probably celebrating this season because they got lucky and managed to have a top 10 program on their schedule. A real opportunity to build a resume. What about now? It’s a lose-lose for them. If they win they beat a shit Florida State and it’s not impressive. If they lose they lost to a shit Florida State and probably miss the playoffs. They did everything right but even if they win out people will say “but they didn’t play anyone good.” If you aren’t going to let these teams into your conference and you aren’t going schedule them the best that they can possibly do is go undefeated.
