But they probably consider the Olympics more prestigious overall, even though they mostly rely on niche sports (water diving comes to mind) to win there. They are probably aware that it is much easier to win 30 gold medals in niche sports than dominate the by far biggest and most competitive global sport (football) and/or arguably the second-biggest (basketball). No idea how much money they pour into their Olympic program, but I doubt shifting all of that to football would work. Team sports are also harder to figure out than individual sports anyway. They’re not the first overall sports power to fail at conquering football, the GDR is another example and even the Soviets underachieved compared to their overall standing in sports. The Chinese are probably wise to accept their overall low status in football, although nothing should stop them from at least being a regular at the World Cup. Basketball might be more theirs in many ways: it is less globally contested and can be broken down into physical aspects more easily. But it’s very height-reliant. However, Chinese people aren’t THAT tiny on average, and their huge population should even things out a bit anyway. It is true that they are kind of inexplicably bad at basketball if this is their supposedly favorite sport
