It's the Champion's League. If you are going to exclude national champions of weak leagues like Croatia you'll put off a lot of potential viewers from that country and thereby lose tons of advertising money.The new format is better. It gives them a chance to compete on a stage that people actually watch (nobody watches CL qualification games). This is going to bring them a lot of money they can use to buy better players and coaches. In the end everyone profits, even the audience that is able to watch kino games that end 9-2.
