I did a quick google and the only "big" teams (teams that have a big fanbase but squad quality is inconstant) that missed the knockout stage in recent years are juventus, manchester united, barcelona and atl madrid (being generous on the big fanbase with this one). i would bet these teams can easily place between 9th-24th and then lose to poopenfarten FC in a hilarious 0-0 0-1 slurper, which makes it worth it for me
