never mind the greatest baseball player of all time, is he the greatest athlete of all time?

What's impressive is not that he's just a really good pitcher and hitter, it's that he's done it in an era where the sport has become the most physically taxing it has ever been.

Uh, that was Babe Ruth, who once led the league in ERA, something Ohtani has not done.

You do realize pitchers are getting elbow surgeries more than ever? Ohtani himself has had 2 separate elbow surgeries, they're literally pushing the human body as far they can before it breaks and it's sad to see a lot of young pitchers going through Tommy John before they even get to MLB

In 1919, Ruth had a 217 OPS+ in 544 plate appearances and a 102 ERA+ over 133.1 innings pitched. So he was 25% more valuable as a hitter than Ohtani is this year while also throwing 130 league average innings as a pitcher (Ohtani hasn't even played the field this year). Ruth didn't have peaks in both at the same time, but his 1916 and 17 seasons are better than anything Ohtani has shown pitching when volume is taken into consideration and he has twelve seasons that were more valuable from the plate than Ohtanis current peak.
Ohtanis a freak for managing to be almost Ruth's peaks in both areas at the same time in the era of hyperspecialization but don't diminish Ruth and say he never pitched and hit. He had a 122 OPS+ in 1916, the year he had a league leading 158 ERA+ over 323 innings.
>>
>>144546847
He actually isn't that fast even for baseball. DESU I would enjoy him more if he played the field and pitched as a reliever. But then I guess warming up would be an issue.

>>

he was never "full time" at both at once. it was a different era, 133 innings wasn't a full time pitcher then. and in 1916 he was rarely in the lineup when he wasn't pitching.
I do hope Ohtani can at least match Ruth's career IP though, not even halfway there though so I doubt it.
>>
>>144546847
It still doesn't feel real to me that Ohtani is performing so well in MLB.
If my memory serves me correctly, during his time in NPB, he wasn't mediocre, but he was, at best, an above-average player.

he was a very good hitter, especially his last couple seasons, but never full time. he was more of a pitcher

That's why it's important for Japanese players to give a shot at MLB even if they're mediocre. You never know who's a "good fit" for the big league environment.

Imanaga was just an average player in Japan, he's doing way above the expectations in MLB.

And then we have players like Iwamura and Fukudome who were beasts in Japan that absolutely flopped in MLB.

Be honest anons, if he crushes it in October do you have the strength of character to admit you were wrong, apologize, and naked dogeza for all anons to see?

Only cowards avoid the question. If he does GREAT, not good, not fine, not average, but some serious MVP shit, will you bend the knee or insist on hating?

>As an adult, Ruth admitted that as a youth he ran the streets, rarely attended school, and drank beer when his father was not looking
>Ruth entered St. Mary's on June 13, 1902. He was recorded as "incorrigible" and spent much of the next 12 years there.

In 1918, he threw 166 innings at a 122 era+ and had a 192 ops+ over nearly 400 pas. Only 23 pitchers in the AL had more innings thrown than him that year. This year, which isn't even complete yet so this number might increase, there are 22 pitchers who have thrown more than 166 innings. No, he wasn't the 300 innings workhorse starter you imagine when you think of the 20s, but there were only two of three guys in each league actually doing that each year. The volume of starters post 1900 is overblown by a handful of amazing pitchers having career years and ignoring that the average starter still only got to like 220 in a healthy season. Sure, he wasn't quite full time in either aspect, but, then again, neither is Ohtani, who has never had more than 166 innings pitched in a season and this is only the third season in his career breaking 400 pas in 7 seasons — with zero innings pitched this year. And again, Ruth threw 166 above average innings with a *higher* ops+ than Ohtani has this year.
I'm not trying to slag Ohtani but saying Ruth never did both full time like Ohtani has managed five years of 180 IP and 600 PAs instead of reasonably comparable inconsistent volume isn't exactly honest, either. He's been fucking great at both at much tougher time to be even good at just hitting home runs and running, let alone elite at both of those and a good pitcher, too.

>>
>>144566048
he had 19 starts that year. a full time starter in the era has around 40 starts
by modern standards that's a full season but back then that's barely over half. In April he only hit when he pitched, and then he "switched" to hitting as he made just two starts between May 15 and July 6. then his season ended early and he didn't play in September. he was probably hurt or tired because being a full time two way player is really fucking hard

>>
>>144566449
also Im not knocking Ruth either. he was a great pitcher and then probably the best hitter of all time. just he hardly actually did both full time by the standards of his era. goat world series pitcher too until Bumgarner probably surpassed him.

>meme ruth
>>
>>144566449
My issue is that using one sided, incomplete seasons as a knock against Ruth but not using it against an Ohtani who has qualified for the ERA title once in seven years doesn't make sense. Neither of them have been truly "full time" at both at the same time. Is Ohtani closer? Undeniably, but neither of them have any sustained period of full-time two-way play.
>>
>>144566607
Fuck off redditor
>>
>>144568034
yeah I guess. he had extra rest between starts on 2021 and the first half of 22 then he was full time for a year and change until he got injured in August 23. I hope he can pitch at least one 200 inning season before his arm inevitably breaks again and he goes to play probably elite outfield

The fact that Trout hasn't played a full season since 2016 is a bigger reason. Hell, he won the 2019 MVP with only 134 games played.
