how did vuelta manage to make such boring stages, they copy pasted 4 stages with flats for 140km and then 1-2 "hard" climbs at the end.
>>
>>150509580
The only explanaition is they had hoped both Dopacar and Vingegaard would be on the start and didn't want the La Vuelta ciclista to be over after stage 5
>>
>>150509614
these are exactly the type of stages that would help pogi tho, he would put 2-3 minutes on everyone in these stages

Add to that the total loss in identity, particularly the fact it's a british team with so few british riders. There is no justification to keep funding this team as a british sponsor, at all. I had said it will not exist, or at least as a british licence, by 2030. That's looking far more likely every season. A monumental cock up in a long line of them for cycling in britain.

Well we have completed the first week of a MIDDLING Grand Tour and that means it is time to catch up on our SENSATIONAL series of /WORLD TOUR WINE/ !!

I have been out of the /wtw/ office for the last week so a few bottles today to catch up. Rest assured, these bottles were actually drank the day of the appropriate stage, so hold your complaints to the board of directors. Stage 5 of the Vuelta FINALLY involves some Spanish soil, but we have a bit of a cheeky wine here to celebrate the prolonged Grand Depart. The ITT is around the city of Figueres, the capital of Alt Emporda, and we have a wine from Alt Emporda to enjoy.

RIM Vins de Jordi Esteve "Contraban" 2021 ($36)

So this is a blend of Grenacha and Muscat d'Alexandria made in petillant naturel-style (please refer to former editions of /wtw/) with very natural vinification - unfined, unfiltered, unsulfured. Almost of the fruit is grown in Emporda proper, but there is a little bit of fruit from a friend's vineyard in Roussillon, hence the name 'Contraban' (it was previously illegal to trade across border during reign of Franco).

Pours a light red/ruby with some cloudiness and effervescence. The nose is initially super wild and barnyard but blew off pretty quickly. Nose has ripe red fruit of rhubarb and strawberry with some funky herbaceousness, super interesting. Palate is light and sparkly with lightly drying tannins around the crunchy fruit core. There's some rough edges here with the brett and funk, but it is pleasant. Perfect for sitting around a fire in the late summer, went well with BBQ chicken. I apologize for the out-of-focus picture, I believe I was quite drunk by this point.

Some (un)expected news has ROCKED the World Tour peloton! The only way we can wrap our heads around this VERY shocking news is with another sensational /WORLD TOUR WINE/ !!

This bottle marks the ninth stage of the Vuelta, which snakes along the valley between the Ebro River and the Sierra de Cebollera in the Northern Iberian Mountains. This is Rioja, one of Spain's greatest wine regions. It is famous for its complex, age-worthy red wines made chiefly of Tempranillo, heavily barrel-aged (usually in American oak). We have previously enjoyed a very nice bottle of Rioja Tinto in the Itzulia Basque Country but today are trying something a bit different.

Cuentavinas Arriscado 2023 ($115)

This is a blend of Garnacha Blanca, Tempranillo, and Viura old vines on mostly limestone soil in San Vicente de la Sonsieera. This is apparently biodynamic. It pours a pale yellow. The nose is extremely clean, really no oak to discern. There is light pineapple fruit and wet stone. The palate is medium, rounded but with a nice acidity that just cuts through the fat. The wine is profoundly mineral, with echoing stone.

For the price, this is really too simple. It is finely built and the minerality is beautiful but there is very little interesting about this. Apparently prices shot up massively after a good review from the Wine Advocate for the 2022 vintage, but this is a bit of a disappointment.

I never really pour it out unless it's flawed or something truly horrible (someone "gifted" me a bottle of bourbon barrel-aged wine once). This isn't bad by any means but it's just definitely not worth >$50.

Oftentimes, these underwhelming wines I will actually drink way more slowly to see how it changes over hours to days, to see whether it opens up with time and air.

of course I wished Almeida to have a full team backing him up, but it was already a huge task to even deplete visma domestiques, not even mentioning one of the domestiques was last year's winner
Impossible task imo, but it's been nice to see that at the very least Almeida is not wasting the chance that the managers gave him , even if realistically he only has 2 or 3 guys that can really help him. wish somebody would smack gim about positioning tho
