Every team will eventually bottom out to some extent but there's a vast difference in the organizational effect of it happening as part of the natural build / rebuild cycle vs. just tearing shit down on purpose and sabotaging your own team while everyone knows that's what's happening. If coaches or players try their best and it's just not enough they don't like it but they don't feel betrayed or manipulated. But if they're told to lay down or feel like the team just gave up and sent them out there to die it creates this atmosphere of bitterness and mistrust. Your whole organiztion gets this stink over it and it doesn't come off easily. No one looked at the Niners sideways and said "man, I'm never going to San Fran because they had one down year" but they look at the Browns or Jaguars and think "what the fuck are you crackheads smoking?"
