Arne Slot on Hugo Ekitike:

Liverpool weren't the ones to walk away from the Guehi deal. That was Palace. Agree though, Liverslip are looking soft defender wise. Early but I'd bet that Leoni won't ever get fit again, or for very long before another injury. Height can easily come with weak joints, ligaments tendons etc. Players that are 6'4+, athletic and can take a tumble are 1 in a million. Asking for skills and football nouse on top of that and you're in once in a generation talent territory. Better to get proven, slightly older, more expensive defenders for that reason.

They're generally safer, lower centre of gravity and less strain on joints, but can still produce lemons. Thiago was another liverpool signing that just couldn't stop falling apart, and was only 5'8/9. They even knew full well since he had a track record of injuries. Chiesa too, one to see how long he lasts, especially at his rate of play.

Van Dijk is the 1 in a million. Barely ever injured, but also, barely ever goes down either. Leoni has one game and is now fucked for months. That's either extremely bad luck or more likely, the lad is simply not durable enough. Again, having height is one thing, having the musculature to play at full pelt and not snap yourself is a whole other thing. Sometimes you get both, sometimes you don't, but it would be foolish to think that just because Virgil is a man mountain that every tall player will have the same constitution. If that were true, football would be like the NBA stacking 7'4 freakazoids at the back all day long.

>A non-league defender played a vital cameo in securing three away points for his team on Tuesday night. But in playing the last two minutes of Spalding’s backs-to-the-wall away win at Bury St Edmunds, Lewis White was carrying a guilty secret: he had gone to the wrong Bury first.

>The 24-year-old had travelled for the Southern Football League Premier central fixture against Bury Town under his own steam and driven from his home in Leicestershire. Instead of heading east to Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, however, he drove north to Bury in Greater Manchester, and added 200 miles to his journey in the process.

>First reported by LincsOnline, White appears to have driven all the way to Bury FC’s Gigg Lane before realising his error. After schlepping back down the A14, he arrived at Getaway Cars Stadium, home of Bury Town, in time to help close out victory for the Tulips, with Spalding winning 2-1 despite playing with 10 men.

>Their manager, Jimmy Dean, said: “I asked the people at Bury if it had ever happened before and they said it hadn’t,. He must have been in a world of his own, but he’s come and helped see the game out for us and it’s always a fantastic feeling to win a midweek match.”

Don't know why you'd think that considering he was barely even playing for Napoli last season

Hate to see a player injured, personally. But on a sporting level, this injury is a pretty big deal for Liverpool. With all the PL, CL and Carabao cup games coming up between now and Christmas, thats gonna be a lot of minutes in VVD and Konates legs. They better hope they hold. Because with their attacking heavy team and tactical setup, weak CBs could cause the whole thing to fall down.

>Wow Liverpool losing leoni to acl could actually be quite bad. They’re one injury away from Robertson getting mins at center half
>The dominoes have started.
>They are one injury to konate or VVD from the season falling apart.
>Gomez can't play 3 games a week.
>Brings back memories of their last title defense.
Arsenal fans really believe Liverpool losing an 18 year old who had never played a single minute for the team is the same as when they were forced to play a legless Fabinho and Henderson at CB lol

They're virtually guaranteed to buy another CB during the Christmas window. Gone are the days of skinflint, penny pinching Liverpool playing a dead team to keep the lights on.

Interestingly both Doku and Frimpong are Twi speaking Akan tribe members from Ghana. Strong Christian identity among this group. You can tell they have a similar look to them, much darker than the typical Igbo look (Eze, Madueke), and a lower cranial diameter, which likely enhances their footballing ability. They also both have the same name, Jeremy, although spelt differently. This must be a popular name among the Akan.
>>
>>150974719
are they protestant christians?
I could be wrong but jeremy doesnt exactly have a greek origin, but hebrew. Would lead me to believe theyre not catholic
>>
>>150974741
They've got to be protestant because I'm pretty sure most of the original evangelical missionaries to Africa were protestant, though it's also the case that African Christianity is a little syncretic at times and can encompass weird animist shit and ancestor worship too.
>>
If Doku didn't play for Belgian and played for Ghana instead, then Ghana would have Doku LW and Kudus RW, that's a crazy forward line.
>>
>>150974659
Harry plays in the middle. Branthwaite will be to replace Poop Shaw on the left CB position.
>>
>>150974783
>on the left CB position
ffs. I wish Amorim would adapt a little and have less than 5 defenders on the pitch
>>
>>150974566
Guehi is free in the summer. If Konate or VVD get injured, they'll just play Endo or Gravenberch at CB temporarily.
>>
The fact that the main narrative in English football today is about Arteta and his pretty mundane press conference, and not Slot calling one of his players stupid (even if they were) says it all.

We get clicks, rival fans hate us because of how good we are, and every time you lot rise to it. Ignore it.

>>150974867
Yeah but Slot has done it before where he's dropped Gravenberch into CB and basically let him play as a classic libero and just had Robertson stay deeper for cover alongside the other CB. Worked really well too because of Gravenberch's passing range. Don't get me wrong, it would obviously be far from ideal for him to end up back there, but it's just to show that losing an 18 year old who'd never played for the club before last night isn't the end of their season like Arsenal fans think it is.

>>
>>150976047

>>
>>150976066
Arteta is the opposite of that. Didn't lose against the top 6 in however many games, until this season, but still never won the league.
>>
>>150976066
Okay. The league title is the definitive best overall award. How many league titles has Arteta won?
>>
>>150976114
Because Arsenal (who I don't support btw) weren't the best on the days where it mattered most.

>>150976116
It doesn't work like that. Arsenal have had some really bad luck over the last few seasons that stopped Arteta from winning titles.
>>
>>150976140
But doesn't that mean other clubs were better when it mattered most and thus are better overall?
>>
>>150976140
Yeah it does. Every team gets bad luck. Part of managing is responding to unforeseen circumstances. So Arteta isn't the best on the day, and is outperformed overall and hasn't won any major accolades in 6 years then he categorically cannot be described as the best.

>>
>>150975606
Arteta is too much of a mentalist to be considered a great manager

Pep is a mentalist but he got results (Arguably his collapses happen when he leans too hard into it like the CL final against Chelsea)
Arteta's got very little in the way of results because his mentality is awful (See: celebrating drawing to 2025 Man City like they just won the league)

Also anyone who thinks that buying a team dog called Win should be automatically considered a fraud
>>
>>150976224
Doesn't really matter what time frame you mean, anon. Arteta (and thus Arsenal) have dropped the ball more than other clubs around them. So you can't say they've been the best overall when demonstrably others have been better.
Like, yeah, they've been unlucky with injuries but a lot of their dropped points is because of Arteta's backwards tactics.

When they bought Ron Yeats and Ian St. John back in 1961 - the moment Shankly said changed Liverpool FC forever, they'd just finished 3rd in the Second Division.

This would be the equivalent of Luton Town buying Erling Haaland and Virgil van Dijk last summer but having LOST the play-off final and still being in the Championship. Just let that sink in.

>>
>>150980660
I remember Ian St John getting the biggest weekly wage in Britain, despite Liverpool being in the 2nd division.
Very strange place to earn such a wage, as at that time, their history hadnt been bought yet.
>>
>>150980660
>Shankly
They enticed him from First Division Huddersfield (who wouldn’t spend the money Shankley said he wanted) with the lure of money. They allowed him to get rid of 24 players (retaining only two) and buying a complete new squad that still didn’t get promotion until a year later after they signed a few more players including Ian St John, with the second highest transfer fee in Europe as a Second Division Club, to get promotion by finishing second.
>>
>>150981091
Shankly went to Liverpool in 1959 because he was promised by Tom Williams that he would have money to spend which Huddersfield (who Shankly was manager of at the time) didn't and had no further ambition as a club to be anywhere higher than they were.

After finishing third in Second Division Shankly released 24 of the 26 players on Liverpool's books and bought 22 new players. They finished 3rd again the next season. John Moores encouraged Williams and Shankly to spend his money on making Liverpool a top flight club for the first time since 1954. They signed Ian St John for the second highest transfer fee in Europe (as a Second Division club!) as well as other players and finished second and went up. Then they signed Yates, Thompson and Lawrence for big fees as well as others and won the league in 1964.

They won their first ever FA Cup after that but didn't follow it with further success so they bought Hughes and Clemence for big fees then broke their club transfer record for Hateley and the record fee for a teenager in Evans...Lindsay, Lloyd and Heighway were all bought then they broke their club record again when signing Toshack and also signed Keegan then broke their transfer record again on Cormack. This was all during six years without winning anything leading to further spending which saw the success they are famous for.

Without dodgy money Liverpool would just have been another trophyless Second Division club, for, who knows how long?...!

I watched a full 90 minute Serie A game from the 1990s many such cases on YouTube if you're interested) and it made me sad.
Watching football today I can barely keep my attention on it because there's so much sideways/backwards passing and players all play similarly and just walk around in their Designated Cuck Zone. It's like everyone is scared to attack or pass fucking forwards. Trying a through ball gets your teammates and manager shouting at you, whereas you used to get shouted at for passing sideways or backwards lol.
This match was pretty much all out end-to-end attacking/counter-attacking and it was Seria A which was considered the most defensive of the big leagues at the time.

Also the crowd isn't completely dead, which is a big help.

are Ipswich the Liverpool of the EFL?
>>
>>150985221
Do they typically play the full match when restarting a match? Cause that sucks for Rovers.
>>
>>150985418
no they'll do the last 10 minutes or however long and use the original players
idk how it works if one of the original players is injured, i guess they allow a swap
but the whole thing is stupid anyway, you can't recreate the same conditions, like what are they gonna do make the players run on a treadmill for 80 minutes beforehand to match the level of tiredness they had during the match?
>>
>>150985540
>what are they gonna do make the players run on a treadmill for 80 minutes beforehand to match the level of tiredness they had during the match?
I dunno I've seen Isak put on a bra and run sprints at halftime so anything is possible
>>
>>150985540
>you can't recreate the same conditions
Yeah, I imagine that's why they have to play the whole 90 mins again. The pitch was probably in a relatively better state when Rovers scored and got worse as the game went on and so it was a doubly uphill battle for Ipswich and so on.
>>
>>150985418
>>150985614
oh nevermind btw just saw an article on BBC they're replaying it in full
how dumb
baseball has a rule that if you complete i think it's at least 5 innings then the game is complete if weather stops the rest
feel like they should do that, maybe like anything past 75 minutes or whatever. or better yet, don't start the game when there's that much rain
>>
>>150985647
I don't know much about baseball whatsoever but it's tough to do that in football because an equaliser can very likely come from extra time or the last 10 minutes of a game. Hell, Liverpool have done it like 6 times this season I'm pretty sure. So that kind of ruling just simply does not work in football I don't think.
>don't start the game when there's that much rain
Hindsight's 20/20 innit. I don't know about the details of that day but I imagine the rain got worse as the match went on and they were just hoping for it to let up.
>>
>>150985676
yeah you're right regarding my baseball comment. idk just seems kind of strange that there isn't some rule about it, you'd think it's happened enough times before someone would think to figure out a permanent solution. but oh well.
>>
>>150985698
I suppose replaying the full match is their permanent solution lol. I used to think they replayed from the minute they stopped the game as well though. Maybe it depends on why the game was stopped. Like, maybe for a pitch invasion or whatever, they'll restart from when they stopped.
>>

you conceded your point way too early, you don't think a team down 3-2 in baseball could just as easily come back in the next three innings?
>>
>>150985837
yeah they could. i was more in my head agreeing it's a dumb comparison because baseball isn't played in "real time" like football so it's easier to stop

pound for pound and relative to era shankly might have been the biggest chequebook manager in all of history. its why all the pundits in britain have this bizarre reverence for liverpool - they were buying all the best players and paying by far the biggest wages with the dodgy gambling money they got from littlewoods. even their origins were plastic, the then equivalent of fc united or mkdons buying a few titles under a tory landlord.

the only comparison i can think of would be mou's first year at chelsea where they just replaced the whole team. but you could argue chelsea were a fairly stable if unremarkable top flight club before roman. liverpool had no history before shankly (had never even won a domestic cup) and his chequebook and were languishing in the second division, it was literally like if boro went and bought haaland and gvardiol after finishing 3rd in the championship

They were founded so that Houlding (a brewer) could still sell loads of beer on Saturdays to punters after Everton told him to do one and left.

'The People's Game' was hijacked big time on Merseyside when arch Tory and rapacious landlord John Houlding tried to stitch up Everton who told him to fuck off and walked out of Klanfield leaving him with a ground but no team. He then founded Liverpool, gave them a free stadium, bought shed loads of players on high wages and poached multiple title winning Sunderland manager Tom Watson with the offer of the highest wage for a football club manager.

If ever there was an artificial plastic club it's the dippers. Yet the deluded cult members like to think they're a socialist club.

I meant where the concrete wall was for it to be an obstacle in a match but I guess some stadiums use just regular old wall walls. That sucks.

iirc the first player to die during a match hit a concrete wall. Those non league stadiums tend to have a cinder block wall around them too.

>idk just seems kind of strange that there isn't some rule about it, you'd think it's happened enough times before someone would think to figure out a permanent solution
wanting a hard and fast rule for something like an abandoned game is like the difference between common law (england) and civil law (germany, france and other continentals)
the autistic continental wants a rule that can be pointed at, this is how it is there is no confusion because its written
where as the englishman wants to look at precedent and make arguments based on the specific circumstances
for example there was an abandoned game in 2015 between blackpool and huddersfield which was abandoned at 48 minutes with a 0-0 score, because it was the final game of the season and didnt make any difference to promotions/relegations etc. they just decided to keep it 0-0 instead of replaying it
there is also the infamous game in 2002 between west brom and sheffield where lack of players (injuries and cards) forced the game to be abandoned but this was found to be deliberate with injuries faked
most abandoned games however do tends just be replayed for 90 minutes at 0-0
the sensible english common law mind is happy to look at these and other examples to come to a decision as the circumstances see fit, a few days of uncertainty is worth it for the better decision, where as the continental savage needs simplicity and to be told how to think and what is right
>>
>>150988213
>the first player to die during a match hit a concrete wall
I wonder why clubs never got around to changing them for "softer" walls. Probably because it's expensive and not really worth it because these are freak incidents but still.

Match to be replayed
