I really enjoyed watching figure skating tonight, it was my first time ever experiencing it and I was amazed, I liked all the performances, unfortunately in the very last one I got severe motion sickness from all the spinning and that made me even more impressed by how they do it without having any nausea, like, wow! I loved the koreans and the Japanese performances but these two completely won my heart.

i feel like these new scoring systems (i haven't watched olympics in a long time, but i know figure skating and gymnastics are diff) has kinda ruined the beauty of the sports. now it's worth it to run a "more difficult" program and have lower execution than a less difficult program and nail everything.

it's essentially how the little nigger goblin gymnast was able to win everything, her base score was already so much higher than any other girls, even if she had bobbles and a shitty landing she still won almost by default.

i mean generally those sports should reward both athleticism and execution right? the balance is hard to get right though. malinin and his team mentioned that based on the current score values, there's a lot less incentive to do quint jumps because the difference in base value from a quad to a quint is so low for the risk compared to a triple to quad.

figure skating shouldn't be about who can jump the highest and spin the most. it should be about who looks the best on the ice. it's literally that simple.

One of the required elements for the women's SP is a triple jump, she planned a triple loop and only executed a double, so she gets 0 points for it. The base value of 3Lo is 4.90 and it was in the second half of her program, so there is a 1.1x bonus. So she lost out on 5.39 points plus any GOE for that downgrade. (If a double were allowed, 2Lo would only be 1.70x1.1 = 1.87)
Ami Nakai had the highest scored 3Lo at 6.65. So if you give Amber 6 points suddenly she's in 5th, 6.5 and she's in 4th.

i get it but the reason i think rewarding jumps and spins is important is because it dramatically reduces the amount of fuckery that can occur in scoring. ice dance is already plagued by that. has been for decades. singles and pairs skating are better insulated against judge fuckery because of the solid objective differences in technical elements. but like i said there needs to be a good balance between athleticism and execution.
