Okay so I’m relatively new to hockey and I want to understand what’s wrong beyond individual players making stupid mistakes. Obviously the defensive core is weak as a whole, but it really feels like they’re working from a shitty playbook. Watching this and the Oilers game, it looks like when the other team brings the puck into the sharks zone everyone just spreads out and doesn’t even really try to stop the play, they just wait for an easy turnover chance or a lucky rebound. And then in the other team’s zone, it feels like the second they lose a puck battle everyone immediately gives up and retreats to try to defend the rush (which they often also fuck up).Am I reading that right? Is this because the coaching staff is telling them to use a system of super dedicated man to man coverage or something, and so they’re really hesitant to clump up on a play?
