He was limping a bit as he got down off the dohyo, maybe he was just lashing out in pain. Idk. Yamanobe's so smol, how could you hate him?

What the anon above me said, also like any sport it's easy to have misconceptions without knowing anything about it. I've had a pretty typical american upbringing, I've been exposed to many sports, yet the only two that got me hooked are Sumo and Hurling. But Sumo is the only one I know of that can claim to be as much a Shinto ceremony as it is a sport, and yet the competition is incredibly fierce and the competitors are serious athletes, it's unique.
>>
really hope shishi gets to 7-0 today bros
>>
What happened to rikishi 100 years ago when they tore their ACL or whatever, did they ever recover or were they just fucked forever
>>
>>156882717
it’s not really a fat people sport, bowling and bass fishing are fat people sports.
Sumo is a sport for strong lower body people and the fat is just a mass amplifier that they add to increase their inertia.
For most sumo the fat seems to be temporary and after they retire they usually lose the excess weight*.
*This does not apply to Konishiki who retired to become a cartoonishly fat man with a cartoonishly small ukulele. Kind of like a Tiny Tim Deluxe.
>>
>>156884806
Great question, I want to know too
>>
>>156884806
I’m gonna talk out of my ass here but I think sumo 100 years ago may have been less heavy in general and may have had stronger leg joints due to Japanese at that time being shorter, thus having less leverage applied to the ligaments, and Japanese at that time having been accustomed to squatting and crouching all their lives.
>>
>>156884806
Their career would definitely be fucked. You can learn how to walk again without surgery, but you won't be able to put athlete-levels of stress on your knee for the rest of your life.
>>
>>156884806
>>156884869
ACL surgery that's actually useful wasn't really a thing until recent years. A hundred years ago, it would be recognized as a sprain and treated accordingly, with a tendency for the Rikishi's knee to suddenly give out with significant pain, and limping in later years. Not surprisingly, such injuries were anywhere from rank obliterating to career ending.

First time watching this, so far I'm having fun. Surprised (pleasantly) that it's not just fatsos pushing each other, some of the throws I've seen are very judo-like even. I wonder if that one sumo guy that tried MMA in the 2000s performed so badly just because he was a stylist (a fighter that sticks to a single martial art), but sumo is looking like one of those martial arts that could be very good in a complementary way, kind of like the way taekwondo is a meme on its own but very strong if paired with karate, muay thai or kickboxing.

That sumo guy only made it to the 3rd division and wasn't exactly the best representative. Still, sumo is specialized and held back in MMA because there's no ringouts. In a format where ringouts are a viable way to win, sumo becomes more relevant.

It's not unusual for Sumo wrestlers to have some background in judo or other types of wrestling, and if they're Mongolian they're almost guaranteed to have experience in Bokh. Aonishiki's style of wrestling does a clear show of his early days in freestyle & judo. The cool thing with Sumo is that despite all of the rituals involved it's quite a pure contest of strength and control, and not really a martial art in the normal sense because everything about it is pragmatic. Even the signature shiko foot stomp is quite practical, it trains the lower body in both strength and balance, and helps a lot with hip mobility. I'd recommend adding it to your workout routine, especially if you have desk job.

Remember, that rikishi at high enough levels do not get to retreat to lower levels. They retire. The fundamental fate of all fighters is to age, and have their bodies fail. This is no different.
>>
>>156888879
We really don't need another yokozuna who can't win consistently. Hoshoryu was never yokozuna level to begin with and Onosato went perma injured and/or mindbroken almost immediately after promotion. Adding a third one would be a set up for even more dissapointment. They have two to do the ceremonial bits, they should raise the standards back up.

>>
>>156888859

>>
>>156889063
>They should raise the standards back up
The problem with this is that Hosh is still active. While it really seems unlikely, there is still a chance that Hosh will turn it around simply because he's still fighting and still in his prime; we don't know for sure what'll happen in the future. And while it's not a great comparison, look at Kakuryu: he had a similar begining to his Zuna stint as Hosh and he managed to end his career with 6 yusho. You can only definitively conclude that Hosh was a failure of a Yokozuna (and thus decide to raise the standard) during the twilight of his career. It's because of this that the lower standard for Zuna promotion that Hosh set will continue to be used until his career is over. So if Kiri wins this basho, he has a stronger case for Zuna then Hosh had and thus there's no reason to not promote him. Right now is probably the easiest time to become a Zuna because of Hosh.
>>
hosh is a better yokozuna than onosato despite the lack of zuna yushos
>>
I rate each of their careers but for different reasons.
>>
>>156889406
>if Kiri wins this basho, he has a stronger case for Zuna then Hosh had
No, he doesn't. A 12-3 is not a yusho equivalent. It would be lowering the standards further.

>Kakuryu
The difference is, Kakuryu had other well-performing high rankers to contend with. This current crop of upper sanyaku can't beat maegashira. We literally had more maegashira won tournaments in the last 5 years than in the previous 20. It has to stop at some point or half the makuuchi banzuke will be yokozunas.
>>
>>156889434
correct, it's simply because of this >>156888738
>>
Kirishima doesn't have a consistent career record win rate to make 12-3 look good.

Yes, it does.

There's a site called SumoCuts that has the basho up from Makushita via Natto and NHK vids. The problem is that all of the vids are hosted on obscure Russian video hosting platforms to avoid copyright and some of them may be prone to technical issues, but it is what it is. The order is completely random, it seems, as you can also watch bashos from 2012, 1991 and 1967.

Double front or deep double mawashi hold can beat double hooks or clamps unless you are huge and giga strong like Terunofuji and can either break their grip or left them off the ground by their arms alone.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmuDHqOOpDM
Match starts about 5 minutes in, I thought I had a better quality webm of this but I can't find it. Teru has a couple clamp lift/walk outs like this one.

>>156895486
He has lost to Fujinokawa twice in 2026, the only times they have fought. I'd say the nodowa was effective. Onosato has only been in Makuuchi for just over 2 years, and the nodowa has continued to be effective when applied.
Even then your original claim about nodowa being ineffective for shorter lighter rikishi is also laughable.
You can always post less instead of posting whatever you have decided to convince yourself.

The ref should just say "go" to start a bout. Then there would be no ambiguity.

No that's gay. The point of the whole pre-bout ritual is both wrestlers mutually consenting to a clean scrap. Having the ref decide when it starts is too sporty.

I agree but it is a bit weird they spend their whole life competing with a "go" from the ref until they reach pros.
Also I feel like them gaming the early start like Fujinokawa and Yoshi do should be more frowned upon by the elders. They take some things like making the proper kenshō arm movement, stepping out of the dohyo on the exact step, etc. super rigorously but not that.

That's a problem with amateur sumo, not pro sumo. High school and university sumo should align itself with the pro standard. This wasn't an issue when the norm was 16 year olds joining a stable and learning everything from scratch instead of high school and university forcing a bunch of bad habits.

He's M14 and is this tournament's designated "bottom tier guy goes on a run against other bottom tier guys" guy.
He started last September 6-2 before finishing 10-5, and went 6-9 in November against slightly tougher competition. It happens.
>>

It seems he got his shoulder fixed with surgery. What Onosato should have done 1 year ago.
>>
>>156906718
It's funny to think that even with how uncoordinated his sumo has looked he's still made it to the top division and managed to stick around. Supposedly he had an injury fixed up so that might be a big help, it also looks like he might have had a bit more technique instilled in him.

Maybe funny isn't the right word, it's scary, scary to think how good he can be.

Ura always does poorly when he rockets up to the high maegashira ranks. He's good enough to shit on mid-to-low rank maegashira but his carnival tricks don't work on wrestlers who are actually good.

It's interesting seeing how over the course of a year Mita and Takahara went from looking like fit athletes and turned into fat blobs. I understand that in reality the weight helps with sumo, but in no other sport do the amateurs look more fit than the pros

Before the injury, Onosato was able to use morote-zuki, get a right-hand inside grip (migi-zashi), and use his left arm to force his opponent out (ottsuke). But since injuring his left shoulder, he can't do morote-zuki anymore. He can only charge with his right shoulder, and if his opponent gets a left-hand inside grip, he's completely helpless. It must hurt just to move his left shoulder. It's only natural that he can't play his brand of sumo when he's trying to avoid further injury.
>>
If two yokozunas were from the same stable would they have them fight routinely or still not schedule them against each other
>>
>>156927663
Anyone from the same stable, or brothers if they're not part of the same stable, do not fight each other in regular bouts, and can only fight each other in playoffs, or non-honbasho like the Fuji TV tournament. This includes if both are yokozuna.

Before you ask, a yokozuna-vs-yokozuna playoff where both were part of the same stable has only happened once in sumo history: Chiyonofuji beating Hokutoumi on July of 1989. The Hana brothers did face each other in a playoff once, but Wakanohana was an ozeki at the time.
