Given that anime and anime inspired cartoon styles have become pretty much the norm or at least incredibly common in most other forms of indie entertainment (TTRPGs, videogames, comics, animation, even miniature wargames). How comes it remains a relatively rare style to find in board games, an industry that operates almost entirely in the form of independent creators and small studios? How comes it still carries associations of being an art-style of games "for kids"?

It was so strange when pic related came out seeing people "warning" others that even tho "it looks like a game for kids, it's actually quite difficult and heavy".

What is wrong with you? Also, you're most likely a pretentious faggot who only pretends not to like normie slop. Here's a test for a connoisseur, depressive plot in an abstract wrapper, unfortunately the ending is shit because fucking Gainax can't make a normal ending even if their lives depend on it. Well, at least the episodic stories are good and complete.

I don't mind that desu but I'm not cutting cords on my models
>>
>>97828969
>character growth
M8, the loss of khala reduced the protoss and removed one of their most unique cultural elements. The protoss by the end of Legacy of the Void are basically just reskinned terrans in terms of the society they are running with the loss of both tribal distinctions, castes and the khala. Plus the cut nervecords look like shit.
>>
>>97828825
I still don't understand how it makes any sense, considering that newborn protoss WILL have their nerve cords at full length, there are still protoss with full length nerve cords (Tal'Darim, for instance), and the Khala was essentially just a spiritual connection hub for them. The ones that had to cut their connection just feel isolated since they can't share their thoughts and emotions with others, but they just go back to their pre-khala days / aeon of strife times. They can just re-establish the Khala now that the amon abortion story is wrapped up.
>>
>>97829032
The entire story of Legacy of the Void as well as Starcraft 2 as a whole is extremely poorly though out. Everything about Amon is so hacky and retarded for example. Muh void, the xel naga reproduction cycle not to mention the way Kerrigan ascends, it's all so fucking stupid. Storywise I'd happily throw everything past Broodwar into the trash. It is all garbage after all.
>>
>>97829044
Personally think the story was fine till end of heart of the swarm, there were still some asspulls like primal zerg and I think kerrigan reinfested should have looked different from before cleanse but otherwise it was fine. Its just the last part of starcraft 2 which had the lore go in free fall... though it did add my man alarak.

My main take though with the whole xelnaga lore is what does that make terrans? Each cycle only had 2 major races, so does that make terrans an abnormality? Are they what caused amon to go all in on bring an asshole?

3rd edition Codexes are basically compatible with 4th edition rules.
4th edition rules are generally seen as an improvement over 3rd, or at least cleaned up and clarified.
mid-to-late 4th editon codexes have less options and customization so many prefer the 3rd ed ones and its not a big deal.
Not sure what other cases there would be.
>>
>>97820675
Ah, if we're talking about that then there's a couple other examples:
>3rd ed fantasy is mostly compatible with Rogue Trader, particularly via the Realm of Chaos and Siege books.
>4th ed fantasy is compatible with 5th ed, though it might be necessary to convert some magic and wargear, particularly if backporting (Cards from both editions are also compatible with Warhammer Renaissance, for the three people that play it)
>6th ed fantasy army books are mostly compatible with 7th edition, again, with some minor jank
Generally speaking, most editions are somewhat compatible with army books from the previous edition, often needing some sort of errata, as this allowed you to play you army while waiting for the new codex to drop.
Of course, 3rd edition and prior don't really have this feature as individual army books weren't a thing back then.

Ps. God, this new captcha is utter shit, I've guessed correctly a bunch and somehow haven't been able to pass it.

I feel like even though there is a bit of a surge in popularity for the medium, the actual art of rules writing might be slipping away. We haven't lost it yet, but there may have been some stagnation.

What exactly makes a wargame/TTRPG's rules good?

And what is the most "retard proof" method of slowly or even hastily (if possible) to learn to be a good writer of wargame/ttrpg rules?

While not the most critical aspect of game design, I think it is important to create something which appeals to yourself rather than emulating the current style.
For example, Skirmish games with relatively few units have taken massive precedence over large-scale wargames as of late, but this does not mean that you are required to create a skirmish game yourself.
>>
>>97820580
>What exactly makes a wargame/TTRPG's rules good?
Playtesting.
>>
>>97820642
>Stuff like that. Figure out what you want the system to do, then design mechanics around that.
Any more general rules of thumb when writing game rules?

I was under the impression that it was going out of style like arcade machines.
Seems I've been badly wrong here and I am okay with that.
>>
>>97824410
If you're going to have a common mechanic, reference the page number it can be found on when it comes up. This helps with people understanding that mechanic.

Be concise; if you can use fewer words to clearly convey meaning, do so.

Don't feel the need to be flowery or use more intricate words because you can (ironic I know given how I'm writing this). Nothing wrong with it, but again it improves readability for the layman.

If you can simplify a mechanic without losing its purpose, do so. There's no point other than being pretentious in having bloated mechanics with additional steps that serve no practical purpose. This isn't to say you need to dumb down everything, but that any mechanic you do add should have meaning in every part of it that actively contributes to some part of the system.

Don't be afraid to take inspiration from existing systems you enjoy and put your own spin on things. Maybe there's a mechanic you think is good but flawed, and you take that and make it better which in turn makes it your own. Mechanics cannot be copyrighted, only names.

Know the tone of the system; if it's going to be a lighthearted adventure game, don't be afraid to be a bit casual or cheeky in how you write things to endear the system to the players (so long as it doesn't obfuscate the intended message or mechanics). If it's a darker tone, then be sure to impart that through the text and mechanics. How a book is written says a lot about it.

Also, TTRPGs are all over the place. There's probably thousands if not millions of free ones available in google drives here or there in a document format, there's ones you can find on various sites like DriveThruRPG, occasionally a new one gets dropped on something like kickstarter and actually gets produced. The market has shifted from major publishers to indie games, and quite frankly indie RPGs tend to have better mechanics than anything put out by a major corporation.
>>
>>97820743
This, 100%
Also, you can't just limit your playtesters to friends and people you know. That's decent for starters, but you need to get opinions from people completely outside of your circle, with different experiences and tastes and who won't hestitate to give you criticism.
Also a very crucial crash test for checking how well written your rules really are is getting people who have 0 prior experience with your game and 0 personal rule explanation from you to play some games by themselves based only on the written rules you've provided.

Often you can be genuinely surprised how unclear some rules that seemed obvious to you can be when somebody completely different looks at them. Or what sorts of weird loops and exploits people can notice in them.

>>97824410
>I was under the impression that it was going out of style like arcade machines.
Seems I've been badly wrong here and I am okay with that.
It's a bit of a weird situation really. Writing new games isn't dying out in the slightest, there's a shittonne of new stuff being written all the time to the point when the market is in fact a bit oversaturated and it's hard to get your system noticed unless it's very original/has great art/has good marketing (preferably all 3).
The situation is worse with wargames than with TTRPGS, since in their case there's also the issue of producing the physical components and getting people to buy them, but still, there are new ones coming out.

But at the same time, the market is still very much massively dominated by a very small number of "big name" games, mostly D&D and 40k, arguably more than ever, which makes any smaller game incredibly niche and might may it seem like they dont' exist at all, if you're not specifically interested in them

I really love hex tile games so I made one where cities are dice (to represent the size) and you draw tiles from a random bag like Carcassonne and place them according to rules (like you have to contribute to existing forests or mountain ranges on the edge until they're a certain size, before you can start a new one).

The game was very visually and tactilely satisfying to me, which is important since it's being played in the physical realm. But the girls, as you can see, are a bit small. So I bought new ones.

I haven't painted them yet but I am hoping to add some numbers to them, almost like Catan has.

So therein lies my question (and I know I'm leaving a lot of details out, this game is very different from Catan, but it's basically a 4x tabletop hex tile game). My question being:

Do people actually like rolling dice in Catan? I think in Catan it's a very elegant way of adding depth to the game.

Currently in my game, you roll 1d6 per population of a city, and for each 5 you roll you can get a resource of the tile your city's on, and for each 6 you can get that or an adjacent resource. But that leads to a lot of dice rolling. By the end game you might be rolling 10 pools of dice each with 6 dice, and making decisions along the way.

So obviously I want to simplify it.

But the question is, do people even like the dice rolling in Catan? Or would they rather the randomness be removed from it?

>Best hex tile game I've played in ages is called Cascadia, very clever, might not hurt to check it out.
Just took a look at it, trying to find a rulebook or something I can read through, but from pictures of the game it looks like a lot of tiles that are two different biomes. This could be good if I took the time to paint them like that, although I never was a huge fan of how "small" those biomes look, and how oddly shaped. Would allow you to "pick" what resource you get when the number on that tile comes up, assuming I go with that.

Any particular mechanics you really like?

Basically there are 5 different biomes and 5 different animal types. You place tiles and animals.
Scoring is based on animal behavioural patterns, so salmon runs in waterways are worth more points the longer you can make the water way, etc.
Its quite simple but has a lot of clever placement. There's also points for the most linked same biome type, etc.
More advanced play has different behavioural patterns for variety. Its a really clever game that links placement and theme quite well.

Java's an older eurogame but also good. Its a 3d hex stacking game with area control and height, basically trying to throw the biggest and tallest party.

That looks cool. Any mechanic highlights? I'm into games that don't involve dice, but I do also like that element of randomness to throw some chaos into the works. I think choice should go into resource collection, possibly with multiple resource types per hex, but not more than three.

I might have to see if my FLGS game library has it and take a look, they have a lot of free games people can just play, to encourage people to go there. I already play there and buy drinks / snacks so I wouldn't feel bad looking at their sample copy. Kind of sounds like Carcassone, but with more meeples.

Java's randomization is from tile draw. Its been at leas t2 decades since I've played it so the standout mechanics are not going to be there.
Check out Cascadia for sure if you see a copy, its a solid game.

You say that like it's a good thing.

And you're also a lying faget: generals are cancer, only mildly less cancerous than the anons who post in them.

Absolutely not. The worst thing in the world is a happy man, because it means they aren't doing enough work. We need to get rid of everything that makes men happy. If they deserved to be happy they would have been born a better gender.

Speaking as an old fuck, a lot of young people don't realize that artists didn't always have websites even in the 90's. What probably happened was Angry Anon saw the 98 copywrite date, didn't clock that it was in Comic Sans and not hand drawn like the rest of the image, and just assumed that was when the image was drawn instead of when it got put on the internet.

I get the urge to be mad at them because it seems like they are trolling, but it's more likely they're still practically (or maybe even literally) a child.

Recently I found some Humanity Fuck Yeah YouTube videos that use AI voice narration on my feed. After using them as background noise while cleaning my apartment I found that that most of them are more or less the same. Humans are the only ones who know how to fight/love sex/survive/etc. How can we save the genre or reinvent it so it isn't so stale?

Oh yeah, I wasn't saying that the reception was actually bad, just that most people I interacted with considered a fantastic spectacle for the eyes with a mostly forgettable plot about nature good

The main character choose to become permanently a 9ft tall blue furry and fuck catgirl pussy instead of remaining a cripple office worker with generational dept so he's clearly a race traitor.

As a human, I absolutely would not let my mate die. They would be hydrated, moisturized, in thier lane and flourishing.

>planet wide super-intelligence
Isn't this blown up by the following movies? It's not planet wide it's tribal.
>>
>>97828976
I mean, even if it's "just" an amazon forest sized superintelligence it's still you know, capable of taking direct control over all animal and plant life in a massive region
losing to that with just a bunch of corporate mercs and the worst supply lines known to mankind isn't surprising
